  • How to plant allium bulbs and the best allium varieties for your garden!
    Most alliums are hardy in zones 3-8 and should be planted in the fall or early winter, after the first frost but before the ground freezes. Plant allium bulbs 2-3 times as deep as the bulb is tall, with space for 2-3 bulbs between each other. Plant them pointy side up in an area that receives full to part sun and has well-draining soil. Cover the bulbs back up with soil and water them in if the planting area is dry.
    Allium foliage often starts to yellow before the plants bloom. When this happens, it's OK to remove the yellowing leaves to keep the area looking neat. Another option is to plant your alliums behind or amongst other perennials or annuals where the leaves will be hidden.
    After blooming, you can either remove the seed heads or allow them to remain in the garden as a decorative accent. Note that some alliums, including Purple Sensation and Drumstick alliums, will usually set seed and self-sow. If you want to avoid this, make sure to remove the seed heads before they start dropping seeds.

    Planted these for the first time this year. I planted the tall purple ones. I didn’t expect much it being my first time planting them.
    They sprouted, grew long stems with big beautiful purple balls. Now I want to plant hundreds of them 😁❤️

    I love my alliums 💝 so beautiful. I added them to my garden three years ago. I have dug up and divided a couple and have many new additions. I have also potted some of them up into planters for my decks.
    But On this point., you had added acidanthera to your garden this year... I added them three years ago.., so last year I dug them up and I collected all the tiny corm babies. Brought them inside over the winter and replanted them thick this spring enmass in short trenches. And They are all popping up!., I now have thousands more of these wonderfully scented beauties to split up and divide, on top of the initial stand, which are all doing great.
    Anyways., alliums! 😜 I have to spread mine out... I tend to clump everything together. But I love how yours are spread out amongst the gardens. I Will have to rethink my madness. 😂
    Keep growing🌱🙏🏻

    Here in South Carolina, I tend to plant all my fall bulbs including allium in winter time around Christmas & New Year's. (The only thing that doesn't really work for me is tulips--not enough chill hours for the regular varieties so I have to grow species tulips.) Late winter planting means I have less trouble with rodents unearthing bulbs and I also can take advantage of the 50-70% off clearance sales.

    Danielle, I love you and your beautiful gardens. I've learned so much from your videos. You have such a pleasant voice and a positive attitude. One question. Do you plant tulips as cut flowers or do you let them winter over. Your tulips are so beautiful. I like the way you group different varieties together. I planted alliums last year for the first time and only one bloomed our of 6. I purchased them at Lowes and the fault may be mine. I will plant the next ones deeper. The one that bloomed was blue. The variety is Persian Blue. The globe was about 2.5". I saved the seed and will sow them back around the original planting to see what happens. However, I plan to order bulbs from Longfield gardens for the coming year. Your videos inspire me. I am 82 and have a gardener to help me now as it is not as easy as it used to be but together we are having fun and making beautiful gardens..

    Love, love, love allium! I added a little blue one last year and it’s so cute, and true blue. But my favorite is drumstick allium. They bloom late and the pollinators adore them. I ordered a Few Red Mohican to try for next year. And the short squat ones actually have really pretty, wide leaves that look good for a long time.

    Danielle - I love to watch all of your videos - thank you for sharing your garden wisdom and inspiration! I have tried alliums of different types for the last two years. I finally got one to bloom this year - shubertii - and I love it but don’t understand my lack of success with alliums in general. They sprout but either send up a bit that wild and dies, or just turn yellow and die without sending up bloom stalks - what could I be doing wrong? I am an intermediate gardener and am usually successful with plants and all other bulbs - daffodils, tulips, crocus - bloom fine.

    • @NorthlawnFlowerFarm
      @NorthlawnFlowerFarm  2 роки тому

      Hi friend! Thank you for this great question! It depends on what you want them to look like dried. If you want them to be purple I would pick just as the color starts to fade. Still purple- but not fresh and full of moisture. You can hang dry or my mom will sometimes dry them by letting them sit in a shallow vase of water and as the water evaporates the heads gradually dry. I like to pick mine green and hang dry. You can pick brown also, but they sometimes shed alot of seed in that stage. I hope that helps!
