My local dealer quoted $179 (CA) for the part and service. Their service is great, and I appreciate that they need to cover overhead costs. However, for this service, I can't justify the expense, when I can do it myself.
I noticed some oil in my air filter. I saw on another site that this may be caused by a clogged PCV valve. Thanks for showing location on VCM models. I'm going to try it!
Taking it out and checking it is one way of checking but what i did. Is pinch the PCV hose. And was listening for a click it didn’t make the sound so I removed the Engine cover and found the PCV valve was not making a rattle sound. The part was clogged with oil deposits. So i just replaced it noticed better fuel mileage. And slightly better idle.
I have a 2007 model and it’s a VCM model And it looks like the PCV valve is on the left side by the dipstick. Like what you show for a non PCV engine. Not the right side I Am having increased oil consumption. 205k miles. On another car, a 2001 maxima. It was having extremely oil consumption. I replaced pcv and. It’s less than 1 qt for 3k miles and it has 215k miles on it it was consuming 2qt oil every 3k miles Great video
Received a new PCV Valve from the internet, but while shaking it is not rattling, I will install and remove later after the weekend, if its still not rattling I will put old one back, which still rattles at least a little.
In the VCM engine, it's hard to see and challenging to remove. Just be VERY CAREFUL when removing it. When I removed mine, the top part broke off (engine heat will make plastic brittle). It was a bitch to get the remaining 2 inch piece still in the block out BUT I DID IT!!🤨🤨🤨 So just giving you a heads up. Also put a little oil on the 2 rubber ring seals it has before installing the new one.
I have 2007 VCM odyssey I don’t see the PVC on the driver side by the oil fill cap. I see it by the dip stick like you showed On video. Gr8 vid. Looks simple unless the pvc breaks apart . While removing . That happened to me on a Nissan .
I have a 2009 Odyssey And when I went to replace the pcv valve the flange that is on there where the boat goes through was broken off and the pcv valve is stuck in the block. This Is A VCM motor. Any recommendations on how to get the PCV Valve out?
Your first mistake was in listening to the guy that told you to do the "Rattle Test" -- because it doesn't really matter. You had to take the old PCV Valve out -- there's no point in any "testing", because the valve is sealed, and there's no way to know whether you got it perfectly clean, or not. DON'T MONKEY AROUND -- put a new PCV Valve in there, and you're good to GO !
I have a 2012 Honda Odyssey Elite with 100 K miles thinking of doing this regardless if I need or not. funny service the dealer never recommend probably because there’s no money to be made Thanks for the vid !
Don't be stupid -- OF COURSE there is "money to be made" on a PCV Valve replacement. Regardless whether it's called for in the Maintenance Schedule, the professional automotive mechanic will ALWAYS check for a properly-functioning PCV System.
The old tale that if you shake it and it rattles it is good is false. It only means it isnt stuck, but doesn't maybe seal ok. These can be a major source of oil consumption if they are carboned up where the ball seals. Replace all of them often.
You won't notice an IMMEDIATE improvement, but your idle should get smoother, slightly better throttle response, LESS OIL LEAKS, and a teensy-tiny bit of fuel savings after a couple of fill-ups.
No. But you can use gasoline to clean it. Then shake it and dry it. You'll hear a little ticking noise when you do- that's a good sign. If no noise, then its clogged and needs to be cleaned or replaced. It's an inexpensive part. The Dealer will stick it to you if they install it.🤨🤨🤨
Hi MrRanger, I am still monitoring the oil situation. I am still seeing some drop in oil level even after recent service done. The van drives fine. Maybe it's just something I need to live with and check regularly.
I got a 2004 Saturn Vue 3.5 Honda I’ve changed air filter spark plugs so far What else can I change to get better mpg? There is no maf sensor at least on mine I was told 02 sensors pcv valve iat sensor
I have the same exact engine. Can you please do a video on how to recharge the AC? Also half of the pcv valve broke inside the engine. How can I remove it?
A clogged or blocked PCV valve can cause a pressure build-up inside the crankcase etc.. If this pressure gets too high it can cause the engine to burn oil as the pressure assists in forcing oil up past the piston rings etc. Depending on valve type, if clogged the PCV should be cleaned or replaced.
I have issue with my 2013 Honda Pilot AC compressors keep going on and off with AC fan as long as I have the AC on and did go the color inside could you help please
the old pcv valve does not click because the clicking is attenuated by residual oil in it which absorbs/deadens the sound. Clean it with solvent and it will click once this oil is removed. If no clicking, then it is clogged.
Every 25k miles? Seems too frequently. I'd suggest minimum at 105k @sparkplug replacement. Or midway at 50k. Found on friend's 2005 V6 Accord @155k miles slight oil leak off timing cover ~ main oil seal. Bad PVC can cause oil leak. We replaced it - it was original! Good video!👍
Yeah, every 25,000 miles is too often -- but 105,000 miles is TOO LONG to wait, because these engines are known to have problems with oil consumption, and a dirty or clogged PCV Valve is often the culprit. It's surprising that Acura doesn't list this as a "Regular Maintenance" item. NOTICE: The PCV Valve is held in place with a SHOULDER BOLT -- which means that the Valve is NOT CLAMPED DOWN when the bolt is tightened -- thus preventing the PCV Valve from breaking when being installed. That "Shake Test" of the old valve is a waste of precious time -- Just throw it away, put the new one in there, and GET ROLLING !!
@4:06 - I would first clean the old one with brake cleaner and see if that works. Clean with brake clean. Shake PCV valve. Clean and shake again. If the sound does not reappear, then replace with a new valve.
Harsh chemicals such as BRAKE-KLEEN and/or GUMOUT can damage the plastic parts and destroy the valve. DON'T MONKEY AROUND trying to clean the PCV valve -- it usually doesn't work !! Take it out, throw it away, put in a new one --- and grab a beer !!
Some people clean them that way, but typically it's not recommend as the rattle sound don't always guarantee it's mechanically working in the engine. It's best you install a new one.
You CAN, but you SHOULDN'T !! Harsh chemicals can, and often will, damage the plastic parts and the O-rings, too. The experienced professional mechanic will have the new PCV Valve ready to go in when the old one comes out.
A lot depends on the ENGINE OIL that you use -- Conventional Oil = 25,000 miles. Synthetic Blend = 35,000 miles. Full Synthetic = 50,000 miles. Full Synthetic oils do not produce as many crankcase vapors, and will allow your PCV Valve to function better and last longer. DO NOT attempt to clean your old plastic PCV Valve -- REPLACE IT !!
My local dealer quoted $179 (CA) for the part and service. Their service is great, and I appreciate that they need to cover overhead costs. However, for this service, I can't justify the expense, when I can do it myself.
$170 that's a lot for a 20 min job and say $20-35 part.

Wonderful video, very specific and no time consuming, grate graphics and excellent explanation.
Well done to you and keep posting!!!!!
Great lighting and video. I really appreciate the part number, the schematic vcm vs non vcm and the torque spec!!

Very good video, you did a great job describing from start to finish! I rate this video a 10 star~!!
Great video. Convinced me to do the work myself
Received a new PCV Valve from the internet, but while shaking it is not rattling, I will install and remove later after the weekend, if its still not rattling I will put old one back, which still rattles at least a little.

Thanks for your comment!

Can you do a video on how to clean intake valves using the CRC VALVE INTAKE GDI cleaner on a Honda Accord V6 2010?
I have 2007 VCM odyssey
I don’t see the PVC on the driver side by the oil fill cap. I see it by the dip stick like you showed On video.
Gr8 vid. Looks simple unless the pvc breaks apart . While removing . That happened to me on a Nissan .
Can a bad pvc valve cause engine knocking after time?. Great video 👍
Yes
Can this PCV be cleaned with carb cleaner and be reused if the ball rattles like it works on most other PCV valves?
Yes
NO !! DO NOT USE HARSH CHEMICALS OF ANY KIND ! Damage to the valve is almost certain.
Remove the old valve -- and REPLACE IT WITH A NEW VALVE.
Great video! Wonder if you can clean the old one with carb cleaner, to unstick it?
Yes you can as long as internally it's truly cleaned and functional.
I have a 2009 Odyssey And when I went to replace the pcv valve the flange that is on there where the boat goes through was broken off and the pcv valve is stuck in the block. This Is A VCM motor. Any recommendations on how to get the PCV Valve out?
That's a tricky one. Maybe use JB Weld to glue something like a big bolt onto it and let it dry overnight and then slowly pull it out.
Thanks very much for uploading!!
The weird thing is my old one was doing the clicking noise but the new one wasn’t 🤦🏻♂️ now I’m confused

What year's is this applicable to? I've seen videos that show 3 different locations for the 3.5 V6.
Perhaps the easiest fix on the whole car

Excellent Video in every way.
If this thing is clogged, will your gas mileage drop??
Jedi Luke 22 yes it will
Very informative video. Ty much
great video
What years does this one cover? My 2012 is located in a different position.

How many miles between replacement?

Just took mine out this is filled with gunk and oil holly ship...so how will this run after I replace it will bit SOUND better BETTER gas or what...

I got 3.5 V6 MDX is it the same procedure?
I should be the same.
Does regular gas can clogg pcv valve?! Thank you
No. But you can use gasoline to clean it. Then shake it and dry it. You'll hear a little ticking noise when you do- that's a good sign. If no noise, then its clogged and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Will changing the PCV valve increase mileage or horsepower?
It fixed my random misfire code I had didn’t think that was cause but it did
Did your oil consumption get better? I remember your thread on odyclub.
Hi MrRanger, I am still monitoring the oil situation. I am still seeing some drop in oil level even after recent service done. The van drives fine. Maybe it's just something I need to live with and check regularly.
Hot melt glue helped hold the bushing in
or a small piece of tape
🚘👍🏽nice video very simple. Thanks a lot
So I bought a new oem PCV valve for my 2006 Ridgeline looks exactly like that one, but I hear no rattle what could be the problem?
There are A LOT of COUNTERFEIT parts at Amazon and Ebay.
I got a 2004 Saturn Vue 3.5 Honda
I’ve changed air filter spark plugs so far

karzygijose buy a new car
I did it without removing the wire harness because I did not see how to remove the clamps to the connectors. Video of that would have helped.
What year is your van? Ours is a 2006, and it doesn't say 3.5 on the cover like yours does . . .
2008
@@dial2fast That's probably why.

why do you need to replace this part? I have a crv 07 and I wonder if I should do that

DO NOT USE SOLVENTS on that plastic valve !! Take out the old one. Throw it away !! Put in a new one, and you're good to GO !
Is it the same location on a 2010 Honda Accord EXL?
John Krish
No, ex-l model has vcm system, pcv valve located on right side, just next to the oil cup
How often do you check it?
Every 20,000 to 25,000 miles
how much was the part?
