    Thanks for bringing up this topic. I recently installed a new nut I found precut at 37mm e tp E on an acoustic to replace a nut that was just over 35mm e to E. What a difference, made the guitar much more playable.

    When i look for a guitar, i always check the nut width before i even consider it. The best set up for my hands is a wide nut with f-spaced bridge.

    • @moassunshinetxt4365
      @moassunshinetxt4365 4 місяці тому

      So, what is the suitable guitar to suggest for wide strings?

    • @WilburTrapRepository
      @WilburTrapRepository 4 місяці тому

      @@moassunshinetxt4365 I hope you don't find my reply dismissive but all I can say is try a lot of guitars and note bridge and nut widths. Your hands will tell you which one is the best. The problem is that it gets harder daily to find a place where you can try out guitars and manufacturers don't usually publish bridge widths.

    I buy 48mm wide guitar necks from Warmoth in the USA. It is a bolt on neck that fits the regular Strat neck pocket. They call it their superwide neck

    I like your video with simple explanation . I have the same problem on my first acoustic , the string spacing being too close together (for me) , but can't put a wider nut on because the fingerboard is not wide enough. So I will strart looking for another acoustic with a wide string spacing . Thanks for your video !

    Anyone help me find a tele with a wider than average nut? Doesn’t necessarily need to be a wider neck (possibly should be though).
    I figured I could put a wider nut (spacing) on a normal sized tele (at least 1 5/8 inch neck)

    • @thegaindane
      @thegaindane  3 роки тому +2

      Yeah, a 42mm. nut with normal string spacing is too small for me. So I make my own bone nuts with wider string spacing now.

    Nice. I made the mistake of buying a Fender 3/4 Mini to learn on, 40mm nut vs 43mm on the standard sizes. Fun to play scales but not chords.

    I have the wide palm short fat fingers and have been watching alot of nut videos here. I just watched one where they change the nut to make more spacing as long as the frets can handle it. It was genius to me. So it would be possible to adjust/fix the string spacing to be wider on the same size neck

    F-spacing, that's why there's pickups made for that too. I don't think a wider nut might be the best idea, usually neck width follows string spacing.

    • @thegaindane
      @thegaindane  4 роки тому +2

      I've heard about F-spacing. But isn't that more spacing in the bridge?... Anyway!, I've made my first bone nut for my Flying V and I was able to make a E to E outside string spacing of 37,9 mm. It was 34,5 mm. before. That's an increase of 3,4 mm 😲... (pictures on my facebook page) I'm just waiting for some nut files, so I can finish it and start playing.

    I thought it was me, I recently bought a Jag, and I’m struggling to make the chords, I then discovered the variation in nut width on guitars, so I’m looking into getting a Les Paul style single cut

      Try the PRS se with wide fat neck. Paul’s guitar has 36.9 mm string spacing at the nut.

    Carsten you look sharp👍👍👍

  • @christinabacke9831
    @christinabacke9831 9 місяців тому

    You can not only measure the spacing at the nut, you have to measure the bridge as well. Here is an example. My PRS (Paul’s guitar) has 36,9 mm at the nut and 52,8 mm at the bridge. My Sire S7 has 34,9 mm at the nut and 54,3 mm at the bridge. This gives approximately the same spacing at the 12th freet. But I agree partly, over the whole bridge I prefer the PRS with its more even spacing over the whole fretboard. 🎸👍

      It's funny.. The neck width on my SG and LP is 43 mm. but the string spacing is 35,5 mm.
      but on my Strats, the neck width is 42 mm. with a string spacing at 36 mm.

    I was just doing my daily practice routine and noticed this, It's crazy but my Ibanez S has a 42mm nut and my Ibanez Xiphos has a 43mm nut, It's just 1mm wider but when it comes to play you can imediatly tell the difference, I've already ordered a schaller nut from Amazon for my Xiphos, luckily It's an easy fix, was kinda worried since I love my xiphos whit all my heart.

    Have you ever heard a saying which goes something like this:
    "It's like making love to a flea: 1 millimeter off and it's in the eye!"
    The moral of the story: sometimes a millimeter can make a huge difference.
