Let them earn that ice time together on the PP. #3. Put Jake McCabe back with Chris Tanev for the love of God. You took the best #1 shutdown pair you had, split it and bombed McCabe's team leading blocks and +/- by -6 in the last 4 games next to Morgan Rielly. #4. GIVE WILLIAM NYLANDER ACTUAL NHL PLAYERS TO PLAY WITH. I don't care that John Tavares is out, why is it that everyone has to play with the "best player" and Captain of the team in Auston Matthews to make him look mid and lose games badly, but they can't seem to find a single player with above 20 goals to play with Nylander who is still managing to double and triple shift and produce. For the love of justice they took Matthew Knies from him and John instantly the day Matthews returned and now even Bobby McMann because both are unavailable. It's becoming disrespectful. #5. As soon as Anthony Stolarz is healthy, get him and Woll back to a 50/50 tandem. If Stolarz looks up to it, give him 60/40 load to allow Woll a much deserved reset and reload. #6. Get a PF Goal scoring Centre. I don't care who it is, but they need +20 goals this season (at least 15 by the deadline) and they need to be able to run a line. #7. Give the fans a reason to cheer. Our expectations are rock bottom. Most fans will celebrate effort and passion. Look like you tried and want to be out there. Win the 1st round and don't get walked in the 2nd and we'll literally throw the Leafs a parade.

JT has been out 6 games. They’ve gone 500 and looked pretty bad most of the time in most of the games. In those games, leafs have allowed 3+ goals every game except one in which they allowed 2 and lost. And in three straight they’ve only scored 1 goal. He might be overpaid but he’s essential to the team as it’s built and has been performing well.

Leafs magically turn into the best team in the league when they realize time is running out. It’s the weirdest signature move. They’re asleep for 50 minutes and then boom they fire on all cylinders. I know you can’t force desperation, but… maybe try playing like that for the entire game?
@@michaelaustin3349 It's not purely that, it's the relaxation in the way they play. They start to throw out the book on their defensive structure, cheat a little more to gain offense. The defense get the green light, take more chances. The offense is told to be more aggressive, try more creative plays. This looks great and the Leafs have a ton of talent to do it - until someone makes a mistake and it goes the other way and bam back of your net. The team hasn't found a way to approach a balanced attack, to play low event but assassin execution hockey. Most good teams only need 1 chance, 1 powerplay to secure a W. Leafs can't do either; hell even Nylander seems to need a couple breakaways a game to score lol.
Being tougher to play against doesn’t equate directly to just hits. You can go out there and run around like a chicken with its head cut off and hit everyone you can find. That doesn’t make you tougher to play against. Winning board battles, front of net battles, being heavy in the corners, out working and good positioning makes you tougher to play against

its just true. this is why their PP sucks so bad, because they all stay to the outside and pass the puck around until they make a bad pass and its cleared. they need to GET TO THE FRONT OF THE NET and for the love of God, Myers actually has an incredible shot. put him on the point, load up players in the goalies eyes, and let that guy rip it around
How to score more goals. 1) 2 layers of net front presence. 2)Change the drop pass on the power play. Year after year of not entering the zone. 3) Stop dusting off every pass and then deferring cuz you wasted so much time 4) Send Morgan to the doctor/rehab/psychologist or whatever it is he needs. Either that or send him to VCR. I will take JT Miller at this point and I don't even want him!

Time for some outside the box ideas from old school hockey... Don Cherry had a theory for his powerplay - he always had his largest, toughest to move player (usually his enforcers) stand in front of the net - time to try something different - put Reaves in front of the net on the powerplay.
The leafs are blinded by the playmaking ability of Mitch Marner and scoring of Mathews in the regular season, but this game showed as the playoffs have every season that these guys don't have the necessary character and grit to drive through defenses and bang in a dirty goal when needed. Braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad, Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake up !
Never have I felt so bad about a team doing so well. And it's worth pointing out that despite being in first (second) place in their division, they are 8th in the league putting them very middling in the playoff standings which IS NOT GOOD!!!
Leafs have 7 of their 8 games in February on the road. Feels like a very defining month is upcoming. And that someone needs to be found for the second line...eventually. Nylander shouldn't have to bear the weight of that entire line. But don't repeat the 2023 playoffs by burning futures for a few weeks.

Keefe told them they had to go to the net to score. They didn't. Steve has yelled numerous times this year they have to go to the net to score. The guys that do tend to go to the net, they score and then you have the others that don't and it's been an issue for a long time. At his point, those guys should know to go to the net, if they haven't gotten it by now and do it they're probably never going to do it.

I've been to about 25 games now since the first year the shootout was introduced to the league and the only time i've seen them win IN PERSON was a darcy tucker shootout winner against the ottawa senators. do you understand how disappointing it is that every game i've gone to this team does not even pass the eye test?
On your point about not seeing the Leafs at home until the 22nd, that’ll give them only about two weeks before the trade deadline. So if they are adding, they need a plan by then. If they are gonna figure out scoring, it’s gotta happen by then or Brad will have to find goals in that two week period elsewhere

I got flak from Leafs fans when I pointed out the Leafs scoring has dipped well below last year's numbers, which I said is pretty concerning that they averaged less than 2 goals/game in the playoff series with Boston last year. People said that the Berube Leafs were scoring "playoff style goals" that would definitely translate to playoff offence unlike years past. Well here we are, like 2 weeks later and Steve is yelling into a camera about them not going to the net being the reason why they're not scoring. They are going to be goalied out of the first round if they have to play the likes of a (healthy) Vasilevskiy, Shesterkin or Bobrovsky. Goals per game by the Leafs: 2023-24 Reg Season: 3.63 (2nd) 2023-24 Playoffs: 1.71 (DEAD LAST, even among other 1st Round exit teams) 2024-25 Reg Season: 3.04 (16th)
Leafs and the Lightning are now the same team. Top 6 do all the scoring. Only the top 2 defensemen are worth a damn. Despite Vasilevskiy the goaltending has been pretty similar. I don't see either team doing a thing worthwhile at the deadline because of cap issues so it's a quick departure for both unless they meet up in the first round.

was at the game, lower bowl. atmosphere was fun for a little bit until the inevitable ice breaker by Minnesota. it was such a bummer of a game. besides that first line and the couple willy chances, looked like really no one was truly in that game. I've been to about 25 games now since the first year the shootout was introduced to the league and the only time i've seen them win IN PERSON was a darcy tucker shootout winner against the ottawa senators. do you understand how disappointing it is that every game i've gone to this team does not even pass the eye test?

On your point about not seeing the Leafs at home until the 22nd, that’ll give them only about two weeks before the trade deadline. So if they are adding, they need a plan by then. If they are gonna figure out scoring, it’s gotta happen by then or Brad will have to find goals in that two week period elsewhere

@JarradBruessel32 numbers are deceiving, Johansson has a tendency to give the puck to the other team who then rushes down the ice and scores... it's frustrating

The leafs are only 3 wins safe from not being in the playoffs.
I got flak from Leafs fans when I pointed out the Leafs scoring has dipped well below last year's numbers, which I said is pretty concerning that they averaged less than 2 goals/game in the playoff series with Boston last year. People said that the Berube Leafs were scoring "playoff style goals" that would definitely translate to playoff offence unlike years past. Well here we are, like 2 weeks later and Steve is yelling into a camera about them not going to the net being the reason why they're not scoring. They are going to be goalied out of the first round if they have to play the likes of a (healthy) Vasilevskiy, Shesterkin or Bobrovsky.
Goals per game by the Leafs:
2023-24 Reg Season: 3.63 (2nd)
2023-24 Playoffs: 1.71 (DEAD LAST, even among other 1st Round exit teams)
2024-25 Reg Season: 3.04 (16th)

Leafs and the Lightning are now the same team. Top 6 do all the scoring. Only the top 2 defensemen are worth a damn. Despite Vasilevskiy the goaltending has been pretty similar. I don't see either team doing a thing worthwhile at the deadline because of cap issues so it's a quick departure for both unless they meet up in the first round.
Domi and bottom 6 need to sit and and come back with a will to play and score. Bobby did!

I agree Steve. i was just saying the other day, that other than the core 4, there’s only 2 other guys who can score (Knies & McMann) And even that’s occasionally. Hopefully a healthy goalie tandem can shore up the weaknesses.

Every game I become more convinced that both Marner and Tavares will be on the team next year, neither of them take home town discounts and fleece the living hell out of the leafs front office. Can't wait for the SAME core 4 players to eat up an even larger percentage of cap next year

OK, lifelong Leafs Fan here. I still like this version of the Leafs to have the possibility of a run in the playoffs. Yes, we need Stolarz, Tavares, Knies and in general dudes to be healthy, but the Leafs should’ve won tonight. Hockey is an imperfect game; bounces tips, etc. not sure what Reilly is up to. Seems flat. Domi…shoot the puck. Steve, great entertainment and observations per usual.
Leafs are the equivalent of Eat-More bars. Good in theory but not worth 4.79 for the 4 pack. Not even any chocolate in them. Just get King sized one at the checkout for 2 bucks.

This is why we need stolarz back for playoffs. he can almost 100% guarantee to ONLY let 2 goals in a game. Basically, hes saying, 'score 3 and we win every game' . If they can find a way to get 1 or 2 more goals a game, and combine with his amazing goaltending, the cups theirs to lose.

This is the most checked out I've been on a Leafs season in years. Missing a lot of games this season, and the ones I do catch more often than not are on in the background. Especially games like tonight when they allow the first two goals, I've got no faith in this team to mount comebacks.
Yep! Offense is so weak. On pace for 99 points. Worst season in many years. Not first now and will end up in the WC spot.
