Miller and Petersson.... You've got an asshole who gives 110% every shift and is overly vocal... and a typical european star who public skates half his shifts and cries when he gets called out for disappearing in crucial games... like the playoffs. They are both the problem... and they can both fix the problem. Miller needs to shut the fuck up about other players, and lead by example, and Petey needs to understand that he can reach another level of play if he locks in and gives 110%. He's got more skill than Miller, but he doesn't have the same heart. Hughes is the best of both worlds. Absolute top notch skill, a lion's heart, and a calmness and willingness to learn and improve while standing on top of the nhl world. I hope they lock in when they realize what a bad situation they're creating for their captain.
The more content the better. I would’ve loved to have the resources that are available now back when I was kid. Glad it’s growing. Thank you for supporting the channel though ❤️
They would've been an absolute powerhouse this year with Johnny. The slow start in Columbus was really just in preparation for the young guns to find their footing. And with the current team, I guarantee it would've looked like he was playing with Lindholm, Tkachuk & Monny all over again 🥲💔
Hughes for Norris again Hughes for Heart No player impacts their teams as much as Quinn Hughes. And yes, that includes the likes of McDavid, Ovechkin, Bedard etc. Without Hughes the Canucks are a bottom 5 lottery team
Some of your stat choices weren’t adjusted for hughes missing games which is no biggie but I thought I’d mention it because I think hughes is putting up back to back historic years
yeah, the fact he leads defencemen in points all while having less games played and his team having less games played then the other 2 (technically not yet for Columbus but they play tonight)
I just learned about the punch turn today! I’m still a total beginner on skates, but even after 15 years of watching hockey, I feel like a beginner when it comes to hockey knowledge. Thanks for another insightful breakdown! Understanding these nuances makes it even easier to enjoy the game and appreciate the incredible skill of these players.
The evolution of offensive defenseman in recent years has really shifted the way the game is played. Very few can do it, but when done correctly, you have players like these 3 being able to single handedly carry the teams offense. It really is incredible to watch.
Crazy that the nhl wants to stop this channel, you’ve taught me more about hockey in a few videos (especially the penguins breakdown on how they play as a Pens fan) than I’ve learned anywhere else. For someone who’s never touched ice with a skate but is a die hard fan, I really appreciate it & I am more invested in hockey now I’m understanding more. The eye test can only teach me so much, but you’ve given me so much better insight. Thanks man I’ll continue to support!
Quinn Hughes and the Canucks need to be studied this year. The Canucks have had the TAR beaten out of them this year, but they refuse to quit, even with the beef between Petterson and J.T Miller. That team should be gift wrapped a cup, to get back into a playoff spot after all they have been through is incredible. I won't say this is a "historic" Canucks run like the Oilers last year, but these guys just won't give up, no matter how bad things seem. That's pretty friggin awesome. They don't have to be the greatest, they just keep coming. They don't ever look "defeated" in any game they play. They always try, every single game.
@Sltarfish I didn't say they HADN'T been doing poorly. I feel it was a huge streak of Bad luck, from loosing Sherwood, to the Hronek injury, to trading Zadorov before the start of the season, but even then, a team with as many problems as we have, we're back in a playoffs spot. Edmonton was playing poorly last year before they had their monster 15-0 run. We are and were hurt, beat up, sick, tired, but we still keep coming. We're Rocky Balboa in the 9th round beaten to a pulp, still begging for more and coming back. These Canucks are good, 110%. All about just getting the team to click on the right moment.
@@o0_VanYsH_0o In a week, I might agree with you, we'll see how they do down the stretch, especially against Dallas tomorrow. But this season I've seen inconsistency and a lack of compete. We did see them in form during that crazy road game streak at the beginning of the season, but keep in mind that came with a complete opposite performance at home. They'll probably make the playoffs this year but I'm sensing a first round exit against a difficult seed like VGK or EDM.
@@Sltarfish For sure, all a matter of time. A playoff spot in itself would be insane, considering what they went through. Keep in mind, that Game 7 was DOWN TO THE WIRE, and we were stuck with Silovs, who still carried us. Lankinen could be a difference maker, we have got a good squad (though the Zadorov trade was DEVASTATING and I don't think people realize how big of a loss that really was).
Hughes managing this with 6 games less than Makar & 4 less than Werenski to boot. Not even considering the tire fire that is his locker room right now - it’s an absolute pleasure to watch as a Canucks fan. Also infuriating that he isn’t getting what he needs from his forwards. His point lead would be a hell of a lot higher if the stars on the team were doing their damn job
I don't get to see Hughes play, so was hyped up to catch him in the playoffs. Unfortunately, I was disappointed after all the hype. He was good but not dominant, and by their last round looked outclassed.
I feel like you could compare Zach Werenski to Nikola Jokic, not in terms of ability or anything, but play style. Werenski doesn’t look anywhere near as flashy as smaller defenseman, but then you look at his stats and end up having to re-watch what you just saw to truly appreciate just how good he is.
@@TheManRadicalcause Canucks have PK players where that’s basically the whole reason they’re on the team. He already plays damn near 30mins a night, this “argument” is overused.
Picking up Werenski and Marchenko early in my fantasy league when it was becoming apparent to me CBJ was onto something was the best decision I made this year. Points have been killer and its nearly gotten CBJ back into the playoffs.
As a sharks fan, I agree with Vlassic’s statement because a few years later we brought in karlson. While he did produce offensively, he was an eye sore on defense. If you watch games you would always see him looking lost or not covering his man. Yes I think offensive defensemen are important but I think it should be a separate award because just offensive defenseman don’t win you cups.
Hughes should win the hart trophy. The description is "whoever is the most valuable player to their own team". Hughes is that. Hate seeing it go to the leading scorer EVERY season
I like how you bring up the Mohawk moves from Makar. As a Habs fan, I must say that I do some of those Mohawk moves from Lane Hutson. By the way, nice video regarding Norris candidates. Calder candidates video when?
Great video! How could people walk away from a breakdown like this and not be enthusiastic about the sport. Another reason why the NHL taking down these types of videos would be such a big mistake!
Idk what your angle would be for a video, but someone needs to revisit the PLD for Keumper trade. It went from an exchange of bad contracts to a great hockey trade for both teams halfway through year 1
I got to see Hughes play live in Vancouver last month and his skating and puck sense makes him stand way out, even to the casual fan. Too bad he's on a disfunctional team.
Quinn Hughes has WILLED the Canucks to being in any sort of position to compete. If they make the playoffs at all, let alone win a round, he's a Hart finalist for me.
One thing I want to point out as well is just how much trust in your teammates you need as a dman to creep up in the ozone. All three of these dmen have teammates who help make their success possible (even if the team sucks in general)
Did a Quick Look at Natural Stat Trick, since the Avs got rid of Georgiev (Dec 9) and Annunen, Hughes and Makar have fairly similar stats at even strength, with Makar being marginally better on the power play in terms of Corsi and xGF. I would argue Hughes should just win the Hart if they make the playoffs cuz his team is a train wreck. And of course, Hughes doesn’t play on the PK. Other than that, their rates are fairly similar. So it’s really like it’s them, maybe Werenski if he continues like this into future seasons, and then everyone else. Also, hopefully I used the right data.
For the punch turn, is it not better to get on the outside edge on your inside leg as opposed to the flat of the blade? I’ve been trying to implement them into my game more.
Hughes is the top D man period. I know everyone likes to pin Makar at the top spot, but not me. Quinn is the man. If I had to choose between the 2 I'm taking Quinn all day. His edgework is next level... he legit dances with the puck and it's beautiful to watch.
Curious if we could get a video comparing the structural flaws of the 2023-24 Blue Jackets, to what has changed under Don Waddell and Dean Evason in 2024-25.
Modern defensemen are so offensive, that I feel like modern NHL is less three forwards and two D and instead just five players who start on different parts of the ice. This breakdown barely touched on what they do to be effective defensemen and instead focused primarily on what they do to be effective on offense.
As someone who's a fan of none of the teams but watched almost every game this season Werenski deserves it most, however he doesn't play for a popular franchise so probably won't get it. Always been a bit of a popularity contest
I love that Werenski is gettin love and the fact that ths bluejackets are finally contending somewhat and that hes been a very good player but i love seeing him elevate his game. Hughes is playing even better than last year which is crazy.

That may have been one of your best breakdowns. The explanation of the goalie stances & edgework was top notch
No kidding.... I hadn't considered the goalie's stance to be a factor.... didn't even occur to me. This was definitely an excellent breakdown!
Thanks for watching! Love hearing it helped
The fact Hughes is doing what he's doing while Miller is stirring up group division again is pretty crazy. That alone gets my vote.

Hard to argue with that
I've never seen a player control and manipulate play on the blue line like Hughes. He is almost literally unstoppable.
I felt this way about Makar & then Hughes hit another level. Similar result but execute it in different ways.
