      That were some joyful experiences I'll bet, but in the end, he was only human a man with normal feelings. He had a weird voice with a good range and his talent was that he knew how to make it a very distinctive sound! There are British and USA. influences in this song but it is not either of them, it's a unique sound born in Australia!

      It was a time when AU. music was not recognized for its talent, despite the brilliant groups that we had already produced, only US. and British music had any merit! Despite that we had a few great bands in that time namely B. Thorp and the Aztecs, the Easybeats and others!

    This is one crazy song!! Intro is drums in 2/4 juxtaposed with the chords in 9/8, then changes to 3/8 for the verse, next the chorus in 6/8! Crazy!!!!

    Gerry Humphreys was one of the MCs at the Mulwala Music Festival over Easter in 1972. I was 15. Canned Heat; Stephen Stills; Thorpie; Lobby Lloyd...what's not to like? Gerry had to fill in about 20 minutes at one point, with an ad for the vegetarian food caterers Shakahari Whole Foods. They made things like corn on the cob and delights. Gerry did an ad lib rap with his own hand clapped accompaniment for the whole time. It was the first time I ever heard rap music, which would have been extremely fringe New York only at the time. He was the real deal. It went something like:
    Shakahari is where it's at, you'll get a (blah blah blah) or a (blah blah blah)....Foot stompin', hand clappin', rappin'. What a genius!
    Oh, and even as a young kid, I just loved the Loved Ones. They were like the Yardbirds for the English.

    This song was pretty "out there" for its time, with it's interesting construction. What you'd call Progressive these days. Plus the great chord structures. Can't agree that its better than "Friday", but still a unique Aussie classic in it's own right. The Loved Ones & Gerry's distinctive voice were up there with the best of the day.

      @@johnvice4066 Quite sad that this utter gem is lost on you. It doesn't matter what country it's from - it's genius. The rhythm changes, key change, mood change, it's subtle paired-back-ness, it's a delight of restraint. If dissing it gives you half the thrill I feel from hearing this, then good luck to you. Love it!

    • @johnvice4066
      @johnvice4066 2 роки тому

      @@flip1325 I'm not dissing it for the sake of dissing it. I'm legitimately gobsmacked. And yeah, it matters what country it's from because I sincerely doubt this song has the same meaning to the rest of the world as it does to Aussies. From the 1980s on, Oz has produced some of my favorite bands, from INXS to Powderfinger, but this just isn't on that level. I think this song is more important in terms of historical context than musicality. From the same era "Friday on My Mind" by the Easybeats is much better.

    A great band on record, and in concert. I saw them at Sydney Stadium in April 1967 as one of two supporting acts for Eric Burdon and the Animals, the other being - Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich (pronounced Tish) of 'Bend It' fame/notoriety. They were right up there with the headliner - a very fine performance indeed. The first Australian band I ever saw live (this was my first concert ever). Gerry Humphries, what a great frontman and the other guys all top musos. A really big bummer they broke up shortly afterwards;
    they deserved much better.

This came on around the time it was released and we loved it... imagine our surprise when the Headmaster (1966 language lol) cut the music around the "you want me again..." and there was no more music that day. Red faced he could be heard saying "disgusting" heading back to his office. This brilliant, complicated song crossed the divide between the Stones assumed blues "cool" and that greater unknown blues wilderness (as we knew the popular musical world in 1966 in mainstream Australia in 1966. ) Search out "For My Woman" by the Easybeats to flesh out the wonderful tribal beat that started to emanate from Australia in the 60s. There were lots of great - obscure - bands that emanated from this part of the world in those hazy, crazy days...Blackfeather, Fraternity, Finch, Spectrum, anyone?. Find and enjoy!

    Oz classic. Great song. Hey does anyone remember a teen show from the 60s which I think began with a surfing instrumental and kids on the dance floor (b/w). It’s driving me nuts!

    Very cool hearing the original, and seeing this Oz band play. I was only exposed to them through INXS, who did a great version of this song, paying them tribute.

    They had a number of things going for them: They could all play, having honed their chops as jazz musicians. They were prepared to try something completely new ... how many pop bands TODAY, let alone in staid 60s Australia, would have dared release a single in 9/8 time? They had a record company, W&G, that had the foresight to issue a teens label, IN records, on which it was safe to experiment with a new sound. (I still have my 7" single of 'The Loved One' on the yellow IN label, and it's still playable.) It had a front man who oozed soul and sexuality. And it had the right epoch ... a time when so much groundbreaking stuff was coming out of England and when Australia was aching to produce something similarly original. Nothing like it had been done here before, and it hit us when we least expected it, but were most ready.

    I think it was Micheal Gudinski who was asked what he thought was the number one Australian song of all time and his answer included 4 songs, Friday on My Mind, Eagle Rock, Downunder and The Loved One which we have here. Something to that effect anyway.

    Is this the same _The Loved Ones_ band that did a song called “Pretty Baby”? It’s definitely rockabilly, but, it seemingly sounds newer in its production, imo, but the singer has a helluva voice, and it’s an awesome upbeat & lifting, straightforward hard shuffling jam, great drums and guitar, too.
    I looked on Apple Music and found this band shown in vid, but that song isn’t listed anywhere.
    However, the song is on yt with a thumbnail b&w pic of 4 young men in 60’s styles and an album or EP cover titled (edit) “The Price For Love.”
    I’m really curious to know, because, apparently, since the original 60’s TLO there have been several other “The Loved Ones” groups, but after listening to a bit of this band’s tunes on 🍎 🎶 I’m pretty sure this is the group, but if it is, I cannot believe that their song _Pretty Baby_ isn’t listed, as it’s, imo, such an exceptionally great banger! Perhaps there were copyright issues?
    Thank you for any info-feedback❣️🤗

      yes if you come from Australia. For European people this original version, even if is beautiful, is totally unknown and then underrrated. In France I grew up with the INXS version in the 80's, my favorite.

    • @StuC5
      @StuC5 5 років тому +5

      The INXS version is good, but it lost what made the song fly so well in the first place ... the 9/8 time signature, and Gerry's unique soul delivery.
