FORTUNE TELLER (1966) by the Throb

- From obscure origins as a Sydney-based surf-instrumental band, The Throb emerged in 1965 and briefly shot to national prominence. Despite its short tenure, the group left no doubt about its punkish potential and they have been immortalised on record by two superb singles, their snarling "garage-punk" version of "Fortune Teller", which smashed its way to the top of the national charts in early 1966, and their group arrangement of the old English folk song, "Black (Is The Colour Of My True Love's Hair)", a slashing, snarling piece of proto-gothic wonderment. (Source: Milesago, great site on early Australian bands).
The Throb consisted of John Bell (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Denny Burgess (bass, vocals), Peter Figures (drums) and Marty Van Wyk (lead guitar).
There is no video for this song, and I could find few images. However I have cobbled together this video as a tribute to the band.
Comments are invited.
These guys were great and with the Loved Ones, Masters Apprentices, Ray Brown, MPD and Johnny O'Keefe they made Aussie music the best it ever was.
Top comment 🤩👍
It's still THE Australia cover! Come on, former Throb members! It still sounds wonderful cranked up to 11! All enquiries...
I just cranked the piss out of my speakers, cut the bass down too
Yeah easily the best version, bloody great
Bollocks.
What a superb version...Killer stuff 😎👌
The very best Aussie raw pop-rock!
It's a long way to the top!
I was born in '59 and well-know, remember and revere thorpie, the easy beats, et al, but the first I knew of the throb was last night, watching a rerun of blood & thunder. what a discovery!
Never to be repeated greatness.!!!
I still remember them doing Fortune Teller on one of the TV pop programs. They were great.
Make no mistake .. this song was as good as anything which was around on the charts at the time. Great band, a pity that they didn't hang around in the spotlight for longer ...
I love the Stones version on GOT LIVE. But I love love this version. Greetings from California.
@JackWebb713.......The best version is the original version by Benny Spellman. End of!
Everything about this id perfect. The attitude, the sound. I was about 13 when it launched. What a band.
whoever engineered this track is a genius. it kills the original hands down.
Benny's original is great, this is OK but the best is Tony Jackson & the Vibrations version
I totally agree this is an aussie classic from the 60,s.
lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a huge Rolling Stones fan but I have to admit this is a better version. More guts!
@@rocksteady68 …..no way! The Throb’s version outshines all comers….even the original.
The Rolling Stones version was my favorite - until I listened to the Throb! It's even better!
Duh. 💜
@@eugenemckenzie2041 benny spellman/ toussaint is great too
Hollies aussi
Don't forget to listen to The Who Live at Leeds . And crank it up !!
It was my favorite version... until Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, T-Bone Burnett, Marc Ribot, Jay Bellerose, et al, took the song on!
I saw Denny Burgess in a fruit shop I shop at recently, I was too much in awe to speak to him, a part of my musical memories from the 60's right there checking out the bananas!
You should have just said the Fortune Teller reckons you should check out MY bananas ! 🤣sorry, at my age I can say anything🤐Life's short always say hello to someone that is from your happy past.
i just got onto utube and this is absolutely fantastic music....i listened to this music in the 60s and its still brilliant...just love it....
Such an underrated group.Phew!! What a song...blow your mind...
I can remember playing this on a 45 rpm record at the end of grade 4 school at Ascot Vale West Primary school # 425 anybody else? Great stuff just love all of this, thank u u tuber's
Memories just glorious memories. ❤❤❤
One of the best songs and sound with good story ever
Fantastic song. Saw them in Brisbane in 1966! So much better than the Stones’ version.
Thank you for posting this gem!
GO RUSTY !!!
CHECK OUT Benny Spellman' oringal!
A bootleg version by The Who can`t even match this!
Love this song. Thanks for posting it.
I think I saw them at the Catcher, or Biting Eye! Wish I could live my life over again!
douglas mccullough ... ah... CATCHER... the best hot spot in Melbourne ever...
Some great Aussie music in those days and venues that gave it a chance to be heard. Loved the names of the venues. Eg. Biting Eye, Thumping Tum.
@@russellcampbell9198 remember BIRTIES ?? or was it BERTIES?
No comparison with any other version of this song ----The Throb wins hands down .This song with today`s booming bass` would blow the audience away :)
100% Spot On !
The rolling stones one is better
I listen too much version of this song rolling stones very good and ultimately really good very good safic aisha acoustic guitar super very. OK thanks
Have you heard the one by Toni Jackson ?
Tony Jackson did a fantastic version too
Oh! What memories of those amazing years. Peter Figures the drummer was one of the nicest guys I knew back then. I 'm so pleased my teenage years were all of the 60's.
Happy Australia day, Australian bands were the best in the world. proud to be an ozzie.
And eighty-five percent of the members of all the bands were off the migrant camps. I know . I was there.
" GREAT AUSSIE MUSIC !!! BEST VERSION !!!
" Great Memories , Great Song !!!
I’m Throbbing. Thank you.
sometimes recognition and appreciation takes years, thanks for uploading have always loved this group and this song!!!
Just brilliant. "And I get my fortune told for free..." Wow.
This song has the faintest twinge of a full-on Rolling Stones type character to it. Aussie Music such as this never came better.
Man, this song is swingin' and people keep mentioning the Ramones which I can see a slight parallel, but with the Harmonica and the background singers, this is hands down a stand alone band ahead of their time. A real shame they didn't get more recognition. I just heard this song a few months ago, and couldn't believe the sound they were putting out. WOW! Highly charged. Truthfully, I've been very appreciative of all Aussie music and groups. Hidden gems that should've screamed "We're Pure Austrailian Music." I was 10 yrs. old in '66 and back then it was the Beatles and Stones and Paul Revere and the Raiders and more. I wish they'd have played this on USA radio. If they did, they were overshadowed by the marketing of others. Hell, I remember the Easybeats from back when they surfaced. The Throb needed better promotion IMhO. Very nice and bookmarked in my UA-cam music.
Really really cool comment and observations 🦘🦘🦘
One of the worlds' best ever bands-just a pity the rest of the world didn't know it.
totally agree
I'll never understand why they didn't ship themselves of to the UK. Might of really gone places then.
No worry, Steven - We're rockin' to it in 2018: the best music is always rediscovered, again and again!
These dudes could have been the Australian version of The Animals
Charlie Dawson .
. NOT might of... but might've... witch iz... might HAVE... ... learn to SPELL... and... you may even become... AN... ENLIGHTENED... MO-FO...
This should always be paired with Love Potion Number 9!
Always!
Or the Stones "Don't Ya' Botha' Me No More."
Real Music .❤
OMG, another Australian rock group - so good. Upbeat tempo and the band is so togethert. Well recorded. Not many people here in the States kow anything about the Australian rock scene during the mid-late 60's. Great stuff to discover. Just listened to Paul James (?) and the Unknown Blues - wow - this band could have been from Chicago, NY, LA, etc. great garage rock. Interesting to read people's recollections of the bands and clubs in Sydney. A scene, a time, that was, and is, truly unknown here in the States.
Was it 'Paul James' or Phil Jones?
@@billp8944 Phil Jones
Phil Jones
Vanda & Young's production skills shining thru...
Ted Albert was the Producer. Vanda and Young were still doing their apprenticeship in The Easybeats.
@@wellsy1954 Yes, I stand corrected.
@@evanespin2726 No worries. Ted was a great producer. Have you heard "Believe in Me", the "B" side of "The Fortune Teller", or "Black" which was their second (and last) record?
This also brings to mind how underrated Arthur Lee is, The Trashmen.....and so on and on in this manner....
@groupie7
don't know much about what happened to Denny Burgess, but he was playing bass with the Masrters Apprentices in 1972 with his brother Colin on drums.
The lead singer Denny Burgess can be found easily on Facebook. He is in a band now that play all the hits of their old band mates and friends who were iconic Aussie singers who've now passed. It's called Dead Singer Band...also found easily on Facebook. His brother Colin from Masters Apprentices and AC/DC is also in the band. The show is called Lost Legends Showcase. Check it out...it's amazing. Old footage and all...
I remember they used to play down at Double Bay Sydney..
Love it.....great memories...great times....the best version of this song Thanks for uploading....And how good is the band name! We wore out the single at the local pin ball parlour's juke box
Treasure my 45 of this..
I would to, Great treasure.
Constitution_89 I’ve got the single, too!! Great treasure!
Thanks for doing this.Remember seeing them live
its great music is fantastic
I remember seeing their old blue/grey Kombi motoring around Sydney in the 60s...:)
a great tight band ,just a shame they didnt have more songs,,because they have a great sound
I was so in love with the whole band back then.... Rock on fellas. Lynda
Haven't heard this in years. Thanks for posting.
I Never knew just how Exclusive the Harp is here ... Wow,
thank you
Great song!
"The Throb",esses eu não conhecia, mas estou achando muito bacana, apesar de ser uma versão bem em cima da dos "Stones".É válido, tinha a ver com o período.
Brilliant; dedicated to Julia.
Still remember this from Marion High School. What a great year for music.
Marion High School in SA? The school of carnal knowledge what a wonderful place.
@@MichaelMcCann-xs6ml You seem to be operating on more information than I have. Then again I was fairly reclusive in those days. All homework and sports audience participation.
I just cant understand why no video exists of this great Ozz band, i would of loved to have seen them.
They originally played as a surfing band at all the local Sydney Surf Clubs. Their other single 'Black' was so far ahead of it s time.
Still a bloody good track and Aussie of course, the only way to be
David Aitken well... a Rolling Stones song.
@@xshadowscreamx just googled it, it's actually a Benny Spellman song, not a Stones song, the Stones only did a cover. All versions sound pretty good but my preference is the Throb who had a big hit with this.
Best of the rest!
your wishes........ever heard of rolling stones?
this track is phat !!
Xcelentttt!!!
so gooood...still
Wow!!
A holy grail of a nuggett
I like this!
I just love the 60's beat scene, what a time that must have been!
Never better then the original done by my friend Billy Richardson and the Hard Times.
Was the Throbb on Dick Clark's American Bandstand for 2 years, Hard Times were!
Awesome
Kick Arse Cover by the THROB brings back terrific Memories of the Good Old Days Even Better than the Stones!
When released this song THEN was recorded released by Rolling Stones. Denny and Colin Burgess is my fav photo Finis . ___ _____ Vicki farrington 1954 -
Great track
where the hell did all this great music go to ????
To UA-cam.
Very big hit. They just nailed it. Shows you it is possible to be the best. Did not kick on.
Cool, go go dancers 👯♂️ loved this, great track, and the chicks could shake it :))) not seen today 2021😉
this is a killer !.
looked like they had some talent sould have dune some U.S.O. shows back then!!!!
nice trax guys...still rox
Fav Of The Day on MOANIN and GROANIN Radio
The Throb and The Missing Links were the two bands that Australia didn't appreciate at the time. They should have been huge.
Anyone remember Compulsion from NZ? They were great live, backing the Throb and others at our local surf club dances. Had a wild stage act from memory.
@@KevinHallSurfing They featured Reno Tahei, a Jimi Hendrix of sorts. I think Reno got into a bit of legal trouble. Don't think Compulsion released anything.
@@wellsy1954 Oh yes, how I remember the guitarist and the songs they played extremely well live. Can't find anything much about them and no videos sadly but that is across the board in the sixties. 8mm film was expensive for 3 minutes let alone 16mm! We tended to think things would never end either.
Michael Browning, manager of Billy Thorpe and The Aztecs, as well as AC/DC. mentions them in his book "Dog Eat Dog"
If management hadn't been so tied up with the Easybeats maybe the Throb would have received the attention they deserved!
Geelong band called Frowning Clouds are doing this sort of stuff again - great sound from these young blokes. Close your eyes and think of ...early Rolling Stones.
Cheeck out Frowning Clouds - Don't Need Your Lovin' - on UA-cam
When I heard the Throb's version, I thought it was a Stone's outtake. I love both the Throb's and the Stones versions.
If the Stones are so good why isn’t their version of this song not comparable.
Oscar, I was a DieHard fan of the Stones version until someone suggested it, I said "What the hell" and clicked on the link and these Guy's Absolutely BLEW the Stones Away.
Having been a drummer most my life and Psychedelic Garage Music was something I jumped into till around 1986 and went deeper into the Old-Time Black Masters of the 50's and 60's and Never had Any regrets, I still Love to listen to this song and Many others because They Really are the Masterpieces that were hidden away from Most of us.
Yay...🍒🎩
Fecking awesome !!!!
I remember this on NY State jukeboxes, and sounded like Jagger there a few times
Too right! People seemed so much cooler, no aggression...etc
I want a time machine!
Cheers,
Andrew
ALL WELL OLD BAND.................................
When you are drunk this sounds awesome,
great cover this one
I had the single black thats all ive ever heard from the throb pretty good version
I`ve listened to all versions of this song, and The Throb`s version is easily the best ..
Think I read it got to no 1 on the Sydney pop charts .
The Benny Spellman original, the Stones, the Hollies, etc., versions are fine...but this is the version I listen to.
A great bouncy tune - a better version than that of The Rolling Stones. Although it was very basic the original video that was set in a nightclub was cool - especially the blonde that was dancing in the cage!!
Denny's up to a lot. Just google his name and you will see his involvement in a wide range of activities, including being Chairman of the Australian Songwriter's Association.
That's right Wilson. Throb's lead singer Denny Burgess can be found easily on Facebook. He is in a band now that play all the hits of their old band mates and friends who were iconic Aussie singers who've now passed. It's called Dead Singer Band...also found easily on Facebook. Tuff, baby.😎✌🏽☮️🎸
I love this song and remember it well during my boyhood during the 1960s. Thanks for this video of 'Fortune Teller' Wilson. It is a shame that nobody can come up with a video of 'Black, is the Colour of my True Love's Hair'. I was wondering if someone could just play the song with any photos of the 60s and post it on UA-cam? Thanks.
the sixties and the seventies australia led the way
Now you're getting carried away.....;']
lol
best version
Hard to believe this was from 51 years ago! Wonder if any of these guys are still around and involved with music at all? Did they continue with music throughout the 1960s?

Marty is still around, living in the Netherlands
The guy that roofed my dad's house in Mullumbimby said he was in this band.
They might have stolen this but no one did it better. haunting
SICK !!
Another fantastic Aussie band of the 60's better version than the Stones
Steve, Yes, it Truly is Better than the Stones because it Really captures that authentic psychedelia all around and I Never thought there could be a better version than that of the Stones .... I was Totally Wrong about that.
better version than the Stones!!
