I've made three different hand pieced quilts. I used to work night shift in a hospital. Sometimes we were really busy, and sometimes there was nothing to do. I would bring along my piecing and I could get quite a lot done (and it helped to keep me awake!) This was back in the '90's. Now I look at those quilts and I wonder how I ever did it! Now it is rotary cutters and fast patterns all the way for me!
I love junk journaling, mixed media and paint kind of projects. But I am also a recreational seamstress. Who happens to have her grandmothers depression gene. Whew, ok so you still with me? This is the best way I know to create a useful art project that leaves me satisfied feeling I have after creating a page in my junk journal. Thanks for sharing!
I have done one by hand sewing patches directly onto a sheet and doing hand fly stitching all over to hold them. I used another sheet to make it into a removable quilt cover. I took years but I love it and it holds lots of memories from my childhood and my own childrens.

I have sewn quilts by hand. It is a relaxing pastime. My favorite to sew by hand is Trip Around The World and Grandmother’s flower garden. It’s been years since I’ve hand pieced a quilt. Do it all by machine now. Arthritic in my hands wouldn’t allow me to now if I wanted to.

I adore making scrap quilts, even if they are 'planned' scrap quilts, such as having a red piece of fabric in this spot, but not the same one. I love when looking through books, magazines, and now online to see is any of the fabrics are ones that I have owned and used. In this case you used one of my favorite fabrics in the first square. It was the ecru/beige fabric with the rose pink flowers. It has appeared in many of my quilt and it will be a sad day when I completely run out of it, unless they are still making it. In that case, I want another couple of yards! Thanks for this interesting technique!
Hi Tracy... New sub... Love your vids! I hand sew just about everything now... I live in a Travel Trailer now, and don't have room for a sewing machine. Wish I had room for a design board, though!!! Will definitely take pics of my stuff now... I do sketch a lot... like a pattern that I think of, in the middle of the night... I also have a notebook next to my bed for other stuff that I think of in the middle of the night... I am a new quilter, but I have been sewing for at least 50 yrs... but I still learn something everyday... but then again, I forget just as much, LOL! Blessings!!!
If the bulk of seams feels tiring or not fun when sewing blocks together, don't forget that adding sashing strips is a perfectly valid way to complete a quilt! Or you could log-cabin your way around each finished block with more long but skinny scraps if you just want to reduce seam bulk but don't want to tie yourself down to one background fabric. I love the freedom of scrappy quilts!
Those old Victorian scrap quilts with lots of embroidery have always been known as "crazy quilting" for me. They were made by the upper middle classes, as evident by the sumptuous velvets and silks in there and the time spent on embroidery. One of my first ever patchwork projects was a crazy quilt!
@@TheSewingChannel for sure! While a regimented geometric quilt top is wonderful, I always love the liberated spirits of scrap quilts. At the moment I've just started one with 60° diamonds. Scrap diamonds will form hexagons, and the negative space in between will make a white star. I'm using a really similar technique to the one you use in this video but working to create a long 6inch scrap pieced strip which I'll then cut down into the diamonds. I am literally and totally buried and will have to try this. Once I have a fabric. I am going to reassess my scrap hoarding. I already have a rule. If it is less than 2 inches. It has to go. Crumb quilting just does not appeal to me and this helps some ;). Thanks for this method. It makes sense to me.
My mother made quite a few quilts by hand. I have never done so in my 45 years of making quilts but I have made scrappy quilts like these. The last two were king-sized. I put black sashing and boarder. The first blocks I made (I have called them crumb blocks) were to be fore donated quilts but when my wife saw them she had to have a quilt for our bed. I will just sit at the sewing machine for hours making block after block by chain-piecing them together, making 25 or sew at a time and saving them until I get enough for a quilt. I also enjoyed your pro tips.
Me too! Part of why I started hand sewing was because I read the Little House on the Prairie books, and stories of Laura sewing when she was like four years old really inspired me. I thought if a little child, barely over a toddler, can learn to sew a nine patch, and make clothes for her dolls, and if her mother could sew elaborate 19th century gowns by hand, then surely I can make a quilt or a T-shirt or something! And I do. :D
@@Marialla. I loved those books, too! My mom taught me to machine sew, but I always have a hand project going as well. I am working on a EPP vintage style hexie quilt now.
@@petmomful2260 I have done an EPP hexie quilt or two! I did a tiny doll quilt in random mosaic pattern, and I also did a larger quilt with flower motifs, but it wasn't a GFG it was more freeform than that. When the right mood strikes EPP is such a fun and relaxing hobby!
My grandmother made these by handsewing and called them crazy quilts. I hope I still have one hidden somewhere...hubby grabbed one once to use as a moving blanket for some dirty stuff in the garage! He didn't think it was anything special. Almost surprising we are still married 40 years. 🤣

I feel that 😩 When my first three children were young I had a circa 1800’s Victorian crazy made with silk and velvet with all kinds of beautiful stitching. I splurged on a housekeeper to help me out and she thought it was dusty and threw it in the washer, then the dryer where it remained when she left. It was completely destroyed. 25 years later and I still hate to think about it.
You asked about making a quilt by hand. I grew up helping my mama make quilts but hand. Going shopping or just cutting up old stuff that a family of 12 would finally outgrow and she would cut it all up and start sewing 😊 I still love quilting and now I do a lot by machine 😊.
Future Tracy (from February 2020) suggested this video as I try to plan a quilt from my scraps leftover from mask-making and she was right ! I think that this method will result in a beautiful quilt with all of the different holidays and seasons jumbled up together. I was agonizing over how (or whether) to organize the fabrics but this method eliminates those decisions!

Thanks for this tutorial and tips! I’m making a memory quilt for my sister out of her fiancé’s shirts. I had enough material to make all but 10 blocks, so I wanted to make a few crazy squares. This “no thought” method is much simpler than what I was thinking!
I've been making mini-crumb quilts lately (doll quilts) and I wanted to share another favorite tip: On each finished block it is very cool to go over each seam with a decorative top stitch, which most machines are loaded with nowadays and which we so rarely get a chance to use! It adds another layer of charm and interest, as well as helping us familiarize ourselves with how these unusual stitches work.
I have made scrap quilts from my Mom’s leftover scraps. I call them No Rhyme or Reason! I try to ad one of her leftover blocks in them so she can be a part of each one I make.
I have found when making doll quilts, especially ones with decorative top-stitching, that 1/8" seams are plenty strong enough and make more out of your tiny scraps than 1/4" seams would. Also, sometimes I make "shred" quilts out of my tiniest scraps (like 1/2" wide) that are intended as wall hangings and won't be under stress. For those I just butt fabrics together and connect them ONLY with the decorative top-stitching, securing them to a used Bounce dryer sheet as a foundation fabric for stability. I've used these shred-quilt pieces as decorations on a tote bag, or as covers for a homemade notebook. I find it fun to make all three types of crazy patchwork blocks simultaneously, because what doesn't fit into a standard quilt block can be good for a (mini-crumb) doll quilt, and what's even too small for a doll quilt is fun to piece into a shred block. They each grow organically and give the mind a rest from block to block as you chain-piece with whatever's available. I do go through a lot of thread this way, but it is fun. It is a fine way to use up any spools or bobbins that may need using up, because the color of the stitching or top stitching does not matter. Or plain white is fine to use for everything if you want, and can become a unifying element. Last tip: it's always nice to use leaders/enders when chain-piecing, so those are natural opportunities for scrap/crumb/shred piecing bits! Sometimes I'll run a line of decorative stitching down (or around the edges of) a single layer of plain fabric, and then that scrap has a different look than other scraps of the same fabric I may use. In crazy/shred piecing there is no such thing as "too much topstitching", and no such thing as mistakes either! Nothing needs to match, and if all four edges of a scrap have different top stitch designs that is perfectly fine, and if the machine sometimes sews a bit irregularly because your speed or tension weren't quite right for that scrap it is fine too! It all fits in with the scrappy quilt family.
This post of yours made my day - thank you so so much for the tips, even though I am so new to sewing and quilting that I don’t understand everything you wrote - but, I do have more 1/2 “ strips than real crumbs and was looking for a way to use them- I actually tried to sew them together and they obviously disappeared 🤣.

The thing is I found quilting to be very intimidating and been inept at the sewing machine doesn’t help break the ice. I am also afraid of cutting my favorite fabrics, in the end I had to start “something” because building a sewing notch in a tiny Manhattan apt is not a casual thing to do- and you can’t just ignore it on your way to making coffee :) Looking at UA-cam videos helped a lot but I couldn’t really find a project that felt close to my heart until I read your post. It’s not only non- intimidating, it’s what I was looking for without knowing it, maybe because I am the type who recycle old colanders into chandeliers just to “ save it”🤣 but cannot take measurements if my life depends on it. Here are my q’s : My google search on drying sheets revealed that most are too toxic to be used on a quilt, but I was wondering if washing the blocks could solve the problem ? As you suggested, I used all the decorative stitches in between crumbs and I am fairly sure the blocks should hold, especially considering that I am planning on putting fabric on the back and then stitch the top again ( like quilting the blocks without using batting in between) : is this doable? My other q is about “ leaders” and “ enders” : what are these and how they help ? Hope my q’s are clear enough, I am English as a second language and sentence structure is not my forte - thank you so much for your inputs on this ! Hugs
@@melaniabettarelli8619 Wow! I would not have known English was not your first language if you hadn't told me. I've written with many native English speakers whose grasp of sentence structure was not as solid as yours. I am very impressed! Leaders and enders are a way to help your sewing machine stitch perfectly on your project. Little snarls or skipping can sometimes occur at the beginning of a sewing line before the threads are fully tensioned, and at the end of a sewing line sometimes we must pull quite a long tail of thread through to prevent the problem of threads being sucked back down into the machine and being lost and causing jams. A leader is a small scrap of fabric you run through your machine, not overlapping but not cutting the threads before you send your actual project through. This catches any snarls and allows the threads to be already tensioned when they first touch your project. Then you send another small scrap of fabric, an ender, to catch and hold the thread at the end of your sewing line. Then you clip the threads between the project and the ender to release it, but leave the ender under your presser foot. It then becomes the leader to your next seam. This preserves proper tension for all of your sewing because threads are never left loose on the machine unless you are actually changing spools/bobbins. About dryer sheets being too toxic to use in a quilt -- I'm sorry but I never researched this. I don't know in what sense they are considered toxic. I'm not sure whether they mean that fresh dryer sheets are toxic because they still contain the softening chemicals meant to work in a dryer. I know I would not want to use a fresh dryer sheet in my quilt, especially against my skin, because that would be weird. I could see how that might be considered toxic. I was recommending using used dryer sheets however, which might be different. I'm sorry that I can't give you a definitive answer about the potential toxicity of the used dryer sheet, which has the softening agent already released from the web foundation. I assumed it was some sort of inert polyester. I never considered whether any toxic chemical might remain in it. I certainly never intended it to remain in contact with my skin long-term, such as if you made a shirt out of it with no other lining. I guess it will have to be your own personal decision how much to trust the used dryer sheet as a foundation fabric. To me it seems pretty harmless. I don't smell or feel any chemicals remaining after they've been used on laundry in the dryer, but I could be mistaken. Perhaps it would be best to only use them on decorative items like a bag or a wall hanging, which won't be in direct contact with you the way sleeping under a quilt of them would be. But then, my ideas about doll quilts or shred quilts probably would not be strong enough to function as a full sized bed quilt anyway, or stand up to laundering. Another option would be to use a different foundation fabric that you trust. Maybe a piece of an old bedsheet? It would be a fine way to recycle something that perhaps became stained or torn. You could make small squares of it in whatever size was comfortable for you to work with, and cover it with decorative crumbs or shreds, and it would support the work so the seams were not under tension with each other so much. I'm not sure they couldn't still pop open if they were laundered, though. But if you have any fear of the safety of used dryer sheets the point is that you have many other options! I just liked working with the used dryer sheets because they were a small size, not intimidating for me. And I liked that I was recycling garbage. And I like the non-linear nature of the dryer sheet fibers, because it gave good support for shreds that are not arranged in a linear way. Perhaps you could find a non-linear type of lightweight fabric interfacing to do the same job? That sounds expensive to me, but may not be a problem for others. I haven't tested any other choices so I can't make recommendations. Some types of tulle might work, and tulle is very inexpensive. But I don't know whether it can handle being ironed. You'll have to make the best choices you can with the options you have available. I do wish you luck! I'm very happy to share the love of freestyle sewing/piecing with you! Please update me with how your projects are going in the future!

I'm so excited to start one of these quilts. A couple years ago I decided to make quilts for my grandkids. I got one done (did sew and quilt all by hand). Maybe that's why I only got one done. I have tons of fabric to use and tons more scraps. Making it this way would be so much faster and easier. I could probably get at least 10 or more made before Christmas. I'm still making masks and found a beanie pattern to make for the kids in their school colors. Thanks so much for all the information provided and for the smile in your voice. I did sew a couple of quilts by hand. It's not something you do because you need a warm blanket. it's something you do because you enjoy sewing by hand! It's meditative and relaxing for me. I can take it with me anywhere I go, and sew for a few minutes in a doctor's waiting room, for example. Everything you need for one patch fits easily into a ziploc. Thread, small scissors, thimble, needle, fabric, maybe some type of thread conditioner. That's all you need, and it keeps your hands occupied and your mind calm. It took me about three months to sew a crib-sized quilt this way, out of pieces that were maybe 2"-3" big. Then I went ahead and did the actual QUILTING on a machine, because I hate that part and wanted to get it over with. LOL! Many people are opposite and want their hand stitching to show. I didn't care about showing it off, I just wanted to do it. It certainly did give me lots of practice in hand sewing, and I'm very very good at it now!
I recently made what I lovingly call my "ugly quilt". It was a joy to make because I had no rules to follow. I found it very therapeutic. Your first tip is great! I can't wait to try it next time!
Thanks for sharing . Very liberating . Yes I have done two hand stitched quilts . One had 1800 hexies . It took me a long time , even sitting late into the night . I calculated 20 mins per hexie if you include cutting tacking and joining . So work it out ??? Finished my second one last week . It was in a more liberated style based on boro ,, and sashiko .Still lots of hand stitching and embellishments . Very thrilled with the result . Cheers Pat nz

Thank you for being so random. I'm a tiny crumb quilter and have to laugh at how perfect some quilters think their scraps need to be. Just go with it!!!
The best clue I can give? DO NOT THINK! It’s awesome, no brainer. My rule, too, no match, no touch. I’ve made a lot of quilts with this style. I’ve seen one made into wedding ring pattern...IF I EVER clear my backlog, that’s next.
You can also use a solid colour as a border around each block to make it easier to sew together. And you can also chose to put only one colour into each block like one block is only purple, one is green or mostly green and so on making each block seem less chaotic even when they still kind of are.
I'm working overnights and should be sleeping but instead I'm watching this video and feeling my fingers itching with the desire to go root around in my scraps bags and start one of these quilts. I have bags of scraps from mask-making just begging to be made into something useful (and beautiful)!

Sewing by hand - I wouldn’t say I’ve hand-pieced an entire quilt top, but I often keep a little “busy box” of small scraps that I can stitch together while I’m waiting. I do have in storage a hand-pieced quilt top that I bought from an estate sale. “ONE OF THESE DAYS” I will actually finish THAT quilt 😆

You can buy paper piecing squares in any size you want and then so scraps to those pieces of paper and then just trim the edges. That way you get perfect blocks I don’t have to do any measuring.
My mom had to have even hand stitches before she could use a machine. I ask her to teach me for over a year. Then I remembered them talking about the dress my dad made her. I asked him the next evening we went to get a pattern and fabric. It was in the in the laundry that night. I was sewing on the machine in short order. My hand stitches are still awful and mom has been gone 12 years.

have you tried using the zigzag stitch to piece together the scraps to avoid sewing right sides together then unfold then iron to flatten? (i hope you get what im trying to say.)
When you are piecing it together (making 2’s & 4’s) do you have to take into account the grain of fabric? I am thinking not, since there are a few diagonal/triangle pieces too... Thank you for this video... makes use of scraps i’ve been keeping (cant stand to throw away scraps) & makes a quilt seem within reach!
Here's a question: Why cut them into blocks at all? How about just adding on and building until it is large enough, and then square it up? Wouldn't that avoid the square blocks where you can see where the blocks meet up? I know it would get large and maybe a bit heavy as you go, but it could be closer to the reference while skipping a step. What do you think?
i make tons of scraps mostly crumbs. i sometimes but two of the same fabric together and they make interesting shapes as they look bent and the eye cant see the seam ;)

One thing I do in my improv quilting is, not even iron, instead, just finger press and top stitch. Sit and sew. This also adds weight, and texture to a scrap quilt.
You might make quilts differently than my Mother did. She would put a dark square to the right was lighter color and have the squares reversed from the Quilts she made. She made at least 17 to 20 Quilts for the family. I might have told you that she made a Quillow That's a quilt that folds to a pillow. The quilt you are making looks great.

@@TheSewingChannelshe made a quillow but I believe you might haven to have the right dimensions so the quilt. The quillow was more like a single blanket with a pouch for a person's feet and stay warm. You can fold into a square. She made quilts when she had retired
I have no comment; however I have a question that "seams" too boogle me. I do have comment now try texting boogle while using google. I have several different types of fabric that I have collected through the years that have meaning. How or what type of quilt and or blanket to make. Btw I have not made a quilt. I do admirer and so much appreciate the time and soul in all quilts.
It depends on what the fabric is made of...when using differing blends of fabric things tend to not "square up" in the end.I would not try that type of quilt for your first quilt.✅

This is my first time making a scrappy quilt and the hardest thing for me was not to color coordinate😟. Every time I did it my brain would hurt🤯. So finally I threw caution to the wind and went for😳. And now I really enjoy putting my quilt together with a variety of colors and relieve the pressure on my brain😁. Thanks for the awesome video!

Those old Victorian scrap quilts with lots of embroidery have always been known as "crazy quilting" for me. They were made by the upper middle classes, as evident by the sumptuous velvets and silks in there and the time spent on embroidery. One of my first ever patchwork projects was a crazy quilt!

@@TheSewingChannel for sure! While a regimented geometric quilt top is wonderful, I always love the liberated spirits of scrap quilts. At the moment I've just started one with 60° diamonds. Scrap diamonds will form hexagons, and the negative space in between will make a white star. I'm using a really similar technique to the one you use in this video but working to create a long 6inch scrap pieced strip which I'll then cut down into the diamonds.

I am literally and totally buried and will have to try this. Once I have a fabric. I am going to reassess my scrap hoarding. I already have a rule. If it is less than 2 inches. It has to go. Crumb quilting just does not appeal to me and this helps some ;). Thanks for this method. It makes sense to me.

My mother made quite a few quilts by hand. I have never done so in my 45 years of making quilts but I have made scrappy quilts like these. The last two were king-sized. I put black sashing and boarder. The first blocks I made (I have called them crumb blocks) were to be fore donated quilts but when my wife saw them she had to have a quilt for our bed. I will just sit at the sewing machine for hours making block after block by chain-piecing them together, making 25 or sew at a time and saving them until I get enough for a quilt. I also enjoyed your pro tips.
I do most of my sewing by hand. It's relaxing for me. I feel connected to the quilters of the past.
Me too! Part of why I started hand sewing was because I read the Little House on the Prairie books, and stories of Laura sewing when she was like four years old really inspired me. I thought if a little child, barely over a toddler, can learn to sew a nine patch, and make clothes for her dolls, and if her mother could sew elaborate 19th century gowns by hand, then surely I can make a quilt or a T-shirt or something! And I do. :D
@@Marialla. I loved those books, too! My mom taught me to machine sew, but I always have a hand project going as well. I am working on a EPP vintage style hexie quilt now.
@@petmomful2260 I have done an EPP hexie quilt or two! I did a tiny doll quilt in random mosaic pattern, and I also did a larger quilt with flower motifs, but it wasn't a GFG it was more freeform than that. When the right mood strikes EPP is such a fun and relaxing hobby!

My grandmother made these by handsewing and called them crazy quilts. I hope I still have one hidden somewhere...hubby grabbed one once to use as a moving blanket for some dirty stuff in the garage! He didn't think it was anything special. Almost surprising we are still married 40 years. 🤣

I feel that 😩 When my first three children were young I had a circa 1800’s Victorian crazy made with silk and velvet with all kinds of beautiful stitching. I splurged on a housekeeper to help me out and she thought it was dusty and threw it in the washer, then the dryer where it remained when she left. It was completely destroyed. 25 years later and I still hate to think about it.
You asked about making a quilt by hand. I grew up helping my mama make quilts but hand. Going shopping or just cutting up old stuff that a family of 12 would finally outgrow and she would cut it all up and start sewing 😊 I still love quilting and now I do a lot by machine 😊.

Future Tracy (from February 2020) suggested this video as I try to plan a quilt from my scraps leftover from mask-making and she was right ! I think that this method will result in a beautiful quilt with all of the different holidays and seasons jumbled up together. I was agonizing over how (or whether) to organize the fabrics but this method eliminates those decisions!

Thanks for this tutorial and tips! I’m making a memory quilt for my sister out of her fiancé’s shirts. I had enough material to make all but 10 blocks, so I wanted to make a few crazy squares. This “no thought” method is much simpler than what I was thinking!
I've been making mini-crumb quilts lately (doll quilts) and I wanted to share another favorite tip: On each finished block it is very cool to go over each seam with a decorative top stitch, which most machines are loaded with nowadays and which we so rarely get a chance to use! It adds another layer of charm and interest, as well as helping us familiarize ourselves with how these unusual stitches work.

I have made scrap quilts from my Mom’s leftover scraps. I call them No Rhyme or Reason! I try to ad one of her leftover blocks in them so she can be a part of each one I make.

I have found when making doll quilts, especially ones with decorative top-stitching, that 1/8" seams are plenty strong enough and make more out of your tiny scraps than 1/4" seams would.
Also, sometimes I make "shred" quilts out of my tiniest scraps (like 1/2" wide) that are intended as wall hangings and won't be under stress. For those I just butt fabrics together and connect them ONLY with the decorative top-stitching, securing them to a used Bounce dryer sheet as a foundation fabric for stability. I've used these shred-quilt pieces as decorations on a tote bag, or as covers for a homemade notebook.
I find it fun to make all three types of crazy patchwork blocks simultaneously, because what doesn't fit into a standard quilt block can be good for a (mini-crumb) doll quilt, and what's even too small for a doll quilt is fun to piece into a shred block. They each grow organically and give the mind a rest from block to block as you chain-piece with whatever's available.
I do go through a lot of thread this way, but it is fun. It is a fine way to use up any spools or bobbins that may need using up, because the color of the stitching or top stitching does not matter. Or plain white is fine to use for everything if you want, and can become a unifying element.
Last tip: it's always nice to use leaders/enders when chain-piecing, so those are natural opportunities for scrap/crumb/shred piecing bits! Sometimes I'll run a line of decorative stitching down (or around the edges of) a single layer of plain fabric, and then that scrap has a different look than other scraps of the same fabric I may use. In crazy/shred piecing there is no such thing as "too much topstitching", and no such thing as mistakes either! Nothing needs to match, and if all four edges of a scrap have different top stitch designs that is perfectly fine, and if the machine sometimes sews a bit irregularly because your speed or tension weren't quite right for that scrap it is fine too! It all fits in with the scrappy quilt family.

The thing is I found quilting to be very intimidating and been inept at the sewing machine doesn’t help break the ice. I am also afraid of cutting my favorite fabrics, in the end I had to start “something” because building a sewing notch in a tiny Manhattan apt is not a casual thing to do- and you can’t just ignore it on your way to making coffee :) Looking at UA-cam videos helped a lot but I couldn’t really find a project that felt close to my heart until I read your post. It’s not only non- intimidating, it’s what I was looking for without knowing it, maybe because I am the type who recycle old colanders into chandeliers just to “ save it”🤣 but cannot take measurements if my life depends on it. Here are my q’s : My google search on drying sheets revealed that most are too toxic to be used on a quilt, but I was wondering if washing the blocks could solve the problem ? As you suggested, I used all the decorative stitches in between crumbs and I am fairly sure the blocks should hold, especially considering that I am planning on putting fabric on the back and then stitch the top again ( like quilting the blocks without using batting in between) : is this doable? My other q is about “ leaders” and “ enders” : what are these and how they help ? Hope my q’s are clear enough, I am English as a second language and sentence structure is not my forte - thank you so much for your inputs on this ! Hugs
@@melaniabettarelli8619 Wow! I would not have known English was not your first language if you hadn't told me. I've written with many native English speakers whose grasp of sentence structure was not as solid as yours. I am very impressed!
Leaders and enders are a way to help your sewing machine stitch perfectly on your project. Little snarls or skipping can sometimes occur at the beginning of a sewing line before the threads are fully tensioned, and at the end of a sewing line sometimes we must pull quite a long tail of thread through to prevent the problem of threads being sucked back down into the machine and being lost and causing jams. A leader is a small scrap of fabric you run through your machine, not overlapping but not cutting the threads before you send your actual project through. This catches any snarls and allows the threads to be already tensioned when they first touch your project. Then you send another small scrap of fabric, an ender, to catch and hold the thread at the end of your sewing line. Then you clip the threads between the project and the ender to release it, but leave the ender under your presser foot. It then becomes the leader to your next seam. This preserves proper tension for all of your sewing because threads are never left loose on the machine unless you are actually changing spools/bobbins.
About dryer sheets being too toxic to use in a quilt -- I'm sorry but I never researched this. I don't know in what sense they are considered toxic. I'm not sure whether they mean that fresh dryer sheets are toxic because they still contain the softening chemicals meant to work in a dryer. I know I would not want to use a fresh dryer sheet in my quilt, especially against my skin, because that would be weird. I could see how that might be considered toxic. I was recommending using used dryer sheets however, which might be different.
I'm sorry that I can't give you a definitive answer about the potential toxicity of the used dryer sheet, which has the softening agent already released from the web foundation. I assumed it was some sort of inert polyester. I never considered whether any toxic chemical might remain in it. I certainly never intended it to remain in contact with my skin long-term, such as if you made a shirt out of it with no other lining.
I guess it will have to be your own personal decision how much to trust the used dryer sheet as a foundation fabric. To me it seems pretty harmless. I don't smell or feel any chemicals remaining after they've been used on laundry in the dryer, but I could be mistaken. Perhaps it would be best to only use them on decorative items like a bag or a wall hanging, which won't be in direct contact with you the way sleeping under a quilt of them would be. But then, my ideas about doll quilts or shred quilts probably would not be strong enough to function as a full sized bed quilt anyway, or stand up to laundering.
Another option would be to use a different foundation fabric that you trust. Maybe a piece of an old bedsheet? It would be a fine way to recycle something that perhaps became stained or torn. You could make small squares of it in whatever size was comfortable for you to work with, and cover it with decorative crumbs or shreds, and it would support the work so the seams were not under tension with each other so much. I'm not sure they couldn't still pop open if they were laundered, though. But if you have any fear of the safety of used dryer sheets the point is that you have many other options!
I just liked working with the used dryer sheets because they were a small size, not intimidating for me. And I liked that I was recycling garbage. And I like the non-linear nature of the dryer sheet fibers, because it gave good support for shreds that are not arranged in a linear way. Perhaps you could find a non-linear type of lightweight fabric interfacing to do the same job? That sounds expensive to me, but may not be a problem for others. I haven't tested any other choices so I can't make recommendations. Some types of tulle might work, and tulle is very inexpensive. But I don't know whether it can handle being ironed.
You'll have to make the best choices you can with the options you have available. I do wish you luck! I'm very happy to share the love of freestyle sewing/piecing with you! Please update me with how your projects are going in the future!

I'm so excited to start one of these quilts. A couple years ago I decided to make quilts for my grandkids. I got one done (did sew and quilt all by hand). Maybe that's why I only got one done. I have tons of fabric to use and tons more scraps. Making it this way would be so much faster and easier. I could probably get at least 10 or more made before Christmas.
I'm still making masks and found a beanie pattern to make for the kids in their school colors.

I did sew a couple of quilts by hand. It's not something you do because you need a warm blanket. it's something you do because you enjoy sewing by hand! It's meditative and relaxing for me. I can take it with me anywhere I go, and sew for a few minutes in a doctor's waiting room, for example. Everything you need for one patch fits easily into a ziploc. Thread, small scissors, thimble, needle, fabric, maybe some type of thread conditioner. That's all you need, and it keeps your hands occupied and your mind calm.
It took me about three months to sew a crib-sized quilt this way, out of pieces that were maybe 2"-3" big. Then I went ahead and did the actual QUILTING on a machine, because I hate that part and wanted to get it over with. LOL! Many people are opposite and want their hand stitching to show. I didn't care about showing it off, I just wanted to do it. It certainly did give me lots of practice in hand sewing, and I'm very very good at it now!

Thanks for sharing . Very liberating . Yes I have done two hand stitched quilts . One had 1800 hexies . It took me a long time , even sitting late into the night . I calculated 20 mins per hexie if you include cutting tacking and joining . So work it out ??? Finished my second one last week . It was in a more liberated style based on boro ,, and sashiko .Still lots of hand stitching and embellishments . Very thrilled with the result . Cheers Pat nz

The best clue I can give? DO NOT THINK! It’s awesome, no brainer. My rule, too, no match, no touch. I’ve made a lot of quilts with this style. I’ve seen one made into wedding ring pattern...IF I EVER clear my backlog, that’s next.
You can also use a solid colour as a border around each block to make it easier to sew together. And you can also chose to put only one colour into each block like one block is only purple, one is green or mostly green and so on making each block seem less chaotic even when they still kind of are.

Sewing by hand - I wouldn’t say I’ve hand-pieced an entire quilt top, but I often keep a little “busy box” of small scraps that I can stitch together while I’m waiting.
I do have in storage a hand-pieced quilt top that I bought from an estate sale. “ONE OF THESE DAYS” I will actually finish THAT quilt 😆

You can buy paper piecing squares in any size you want and then so scraps to those pieces of paper and then just trim the edges. That way you get perfect blocks I don’t have to do any measuring.
I learned to sew and quilt by hand from my grandmother. I still quilt by hand.

My mom had to have even hand stitches before she could use a machine. I ask her to teach me for over a year. Then I remembered them talking about the dress my dad made her. I asked him the next evening we went to get a pattern and fabric. It was in the in the laundry that night. I was sewing on the machine in short order. My hand stitches are still awful and mom has been gone 12 years.

have you tried using the zigzag stitch to piece together the scraps to avoid sewing right sides together then unfold then iron to flatten? (i hope you get what im trying to say.)

Here's a question: Why cut them into blocks at all? How about just adding on and building until it is large enough, and then square it up? Wouldn't that avoid the square blocks where you can see where the blocks meet up? I know it would get large and maybe a bit heavy as you go, but it could be closer to the reference while skipping a step. What do you think?
You could totally cut and sew together as you like. Try it and see✅

i make tons of scraps mostly crumbs. i sometimes but two of the same fabric together and they make interesting shapes as they look bent and the eye cant see the seam ;)

One thing I do in my improv quilting is, not even iron, instead, just finger press and top stitch. Sit and sew. This also adds weight, and texture to a scrap quilt.

You might make quilts differently than my Mother did. She would put a dark square to the right was lighter color and have the squares reversed from the Quilts she made. She made at least 17 to 20 Quilts for the family. I might have told you that she made a Quillow

Sounds like she was an awesome quilter! ❤️ The quilt in the video- I do different than how I would normally do a quilt. The one in the video is more about “anything goes”😀 I’ve never heard of a quillow before- sounds fun! Maybe I should do a video on a quillow! ✅
@@TheSewingChannelshe made a quillow but I believe you might haven to have the right dimensions so the quilt. The quillow was more like a single blanket with a pouch for a person's feet and stay warm. You can fold into a square. She made quilts when she had retired
I have no comment; however I have a question that "seams" too boogle me. I do have comment now try texting boogle while using google. I have several different types of fabric that I have collected through the years that have meaning. How or what type of quilt and or blanket to make. Btw I have not made a quilt. I do admirer and so much appreciate the time and soul in all quilts.
It depends on what the fabric is made of...when using differing blends of fabric things tend to not "square up" in the end.I would not try that type of quilt for your first quilt.✅

This is my first time making a scrappy quilt and the hardest thing for me was not to color coordinate😟. Every time I did it my brain would hurt🤯. So finally I threw caution to the wind and went for😳. And now I really enjoy putting my quilt together with a variety of colors and relieve the pressure on my brain😁. Thanks for the awesome video!
