    You can add your own “grippy dots” on your ruler by putting small dots of hot glue then letting them dry completely before using. I do this all the time with shoes that get too slick.

    I'm a dressmaker rather than a quilter so I saw 1 hour quilt and got my hopes up that you could make the actual cool part of quilt making go faster. But you only did the patchwork part :( I love the texture quilting can give to a fabric but the investment in either hand quilting time or paying for commercial quilting is too much even for that cool effect.

    • @kennabruno7465
      @kennabruno7465 24 дні тому

      As not a dress maker or a professional quilter this would be perfect to put batting in and a sheet behind for the backing. And do the old fashioned yarn tying! Making these for my 9 grand children.

    • @ElizabethJones-pv3sj
      @ElizabethJones-pv3sj 21 день тому

      @@kennabruno7465 i don't know what yarn tying is but I'm guessing it's just tying layers together at a couple of points possibly with knots. It doesn't sound like something that would work in a garment or give the same textural effect as quilting. My point is that it's misleading to say this is a fast way to achieve quilting when it's just instructions to make a single layer of patchwork. It frustrated me when people say quilting when they actually mean patchwork. These are two completely different fabric treatments that are often combined but don't have to be (i have a quilted skirt with zero patchwork just lovely quilting in an interesting pattern and I would love a way to make more). An expert using the wrong term just means beginners don't know they are getting it wrong and the problem is perpetuated.

    I love the layout for this quilt. Thank you! Just a suggestion, if you drew a line from corner to corner instead of cutting it, put two contrasting rectangles pieces right sides together, then stitched on both sides of the drawn line, a 1/4 inch away from the line, THEN cut it apart on the line, you would instantly get two 2 blocks and save some time. You also not have to worry about sewing those bias pieces back together. Just a thought! Thanks again for your video!

      Dear Dee: Sewing on the bias like the triangles are, you just have to be careful not to stretch your fabric. You can stitch about 2" and carefully PUSH not pull on thetopfabric to help ease it into the one underneath. Just lift your presser foot push to ease gently and sew a few more inches. It's called "Park and Pinch"

  • @Teeders

    I want to mention this after i cut my pieces. That fat quarters or the ones I got come in rectangles. I got so disheartened when I was putting the triangles together that the edges on one were wonky and I thought it was smaller than the others. They're all the same size though and when I place them together, they form a rectangle; exactly as planned. It takes a lot of oomph to cut through 12 layers though and I'm fairly sure my rotary blade was almost brand new. I love this pattern though as it's easy and I always seem to buy fat quarters for future projects. The quilt I'm making is going to be watermelon themed because I bought two bundles of 5 then found two separate singles of watermelon, so I got 6. I believe I have two yards of watermelon fabric somewhere...most likely purchased in the summer and stashed away.

    I know you made this video a long time ago. I bought the following item, "Dritz 3141 Quilter's Slip 'N Grips (32-Count)" they are little circle sandpaper with a self-adhesive that you put on your ruler, and believe it or not, all my rulers do not move. Even the Creative Quilt Ruler I put the on. Also, what helps me two is I put a 2-pound weight on my small rulers and a 5-pound ruler. This way, I know my ruler will not move and make a better cut. If this is something that can help you make better cuts, and if you think your followers can benefit from me, by all means, share it.

      Teach them to sew and they will have markable skills/memory’s with you always. I love sewing and quilting, and my mother taught me the basics, but not to the extent that you can do. I went to high school with a girl who made all her own clothes, and they were far better than anything man made in stores. I’m trying to pick up my knowledge and make more quilts and tailor made clothes because I don’t like most things in stores. Good luck with your grandchildren and sewing projects you all do together. When they have enough skills that you taught them, maybe you could give them a basic sewing machine as a “reward.” This will be a wonderful way to inspire them to sew/quilt with grandma.

  • @AvivaHadas
    @AvivaHadas 2 роки тому +2

    Do you have any tips for those harsh folds? It looks like you didn't quite get them flat... How do you judge "flat enough?" (Meanwhile it was good too see ironing without it ending up flat - Can you read that this bugs me? I iron & iron and those stubborn folds remain.)

    • @TinyOrchardQuilts
      @TinyOrchardQuilts  2 роки тому

      Lol. It bugs me too. Steam and some spray can help but other than saturating them pretty well, there isn’t a lot to be done. I usually fully starch my fabric and get it almost dripping. When I iron it after it dries, the fold lines are gone but it isn’t the fast process ever.
      As for flat enough to cut, it depends on the blocks. If I’m doing really small fussy blocks with tiny pieces, I’ll spend the extra time to really press and add lots of spray starch to get them flat. But for something like this where 1/8” from a fold bump isn’t make or break, I’m willing to let more folds stay a little bumpy.

    • @AvivaHadas
      @AvivaHadas 2 роки тому

      @@TinyOrchardQuilts I just saw quilting on ig where the lack of ironing resulted in folded over fabric. So I appreciate the sentiments. (I’m always quite aghast at the rather haphazard methods in quilting online. But they make quilts…)

    I enjoyed watching this. However, it might be more accurate to say this is a one hour quilt TOP, not the finished quilt. I recently made my first quilt, and it didn't take long to figure out that piecing the top was quick and easy compared to finishing it - piecing the back, basting, quilting, and binding it.

    I figured there are 3 rows across by 20" each block equals 60" and the other way worksout to 17 x 4" equals 68" for approximately 60" by 68" finished quilt top. One could add a 4" border and maybe even a 6" border to add some size to it.

    I always prewash my fabric before sewing. You didn't mention that here. Can I get away with not prewashing? Should I wash the finished top before backing it? I'm just curious cuz it would save me a lot of time and hassle if I don't have to worry about prewashing. Your opinion on this would be very much appreciated :-)

    So I am planning my first quilt. One of the questions in my mind is if I am sewing everything with a 1/4" seam allowance, why am I cutting everything as 1/2" seam allowance. The pattern I plan to use came with a 4 1/2" ruler. It is by June tailor.

    So I am pressed to finish my volunteer sample of this first effort quilted crate mat for an organization. I watched your a quilt in an hour but it’s just the top.
    What do I put in the middle?
    What do I do for a back layer?
    How do I sew them together?!?! Ughhhhh

    Thanks for this great video. My best friend's daughter expressed an interest in quilting, so I sent her a beginning Quilters kit for birthday with a cutting mat, rotary cutter, pins and a few extras and for Christmas I am going to gift her a sewing machine. What is the seam guide you were using in this video? Could you provide a link? We all know how vital it is to have an accurate quarter inch seam when piecing and there are all kinds of feet available, but I think being a newbie she would really appreciate this seam guide. Thanks!

    The camera work is extremely poor in this video. I can’t see most of what you are doing and I never seen your full face when you are talking. I could not complete a quilt by watching this video like I can with Jenny Doan or Donna Jordan. Very frustrating. You need a good camera person,

    I really enjoyed this video and quilt. As I was reading the comments it occured to me it might be fun to try with my stash of Christmas or patriotic fabric. Perhaps the alternate fabric could be white on white snowflakes or stars.

    I disagree with your comment that pressing your seams to one side is a shortcut! It is often easier to get precise intersections when you you can butt together seam allowances that have been pressed in opposite directions. Save pressing seams open for when you have more than 4 pieces of fabric intersecting or when sewing clothing.

    I am new at quilting.
    I do not have fat quarters but I do have fabric that I want to use.
    How do I get the fastest- leas waste cuts from 2 yards of fabric to get the sizes I need for this.
