Sounds like we need a Sin City commentary track. Jim's first-time reaction would be good.

This episode is incredible. I love hearing you guys talk about the formal elements, even as someone who has done bristol and ink comics myself I am still super humbled by what you guys can see on certain pages. Sin City might just be the most pure and substantial work of visual fiction to come out of a single person ever. It's just all Miller on those pages, visually iconic, well written, political and oozing with style. It still holds up so well and the original art is stunning.
as far as the handcuff panel that precedes the overhead car panel, I can't tell if the Kayfabers are overthinking just how page layouts should work independently on their own or if maybe the Scott McCloud reference to Understanding Comics is just super strict on visual symbolism. The previous page the girls are talking about giving Marv a set of handcuffs so I assume it was just the perfect sequential image to go from their dialogue to giving some space at the top so the car piece doesn't have to be a splash page.

Jim, watch the movie. When it first came out, I sat in a theater with a smile on my face, and probably didn't blink throughout the entire film! Because it IS the comic, come to life, almost PANEL by PANEL. The adaptation was SO FAITHFUL, I had never seen anything like it! If you loved the book, as I did, check out the movie!! You're welcome. ☺

A comic-to-film comparison might be TOO ambitious a Kayfabe shoot, but I'd be onboard.

Love seeing how he did so much of the work, and then how he decided how much to show of it, and then his additional work to embolden or change that. How many artists are willing to not even show so much of their work? So fascinating and bold.

Found a copy of this at a serious discount and snapped it up. The amount of detail and process revealed at the large size is stunning. I stared at some of the panels that feature Goldie’s hair and just marveled at how Miller brought that to life.

Been a fan of FM's art and writing since his his days on Daredevil back in the 80s. Specifically with the storyline of how the Kingpin was attempting to destroy his life. Each of the four or five issues which took place during the winter months, shows DD in a progressively worse state than previoiusly. He also did those cinematic looking top looking down points of view in a small room where the sense of cramped space is evident. He loses his apartment, his assets get frozen, he ends up living on the streets and in bad situations before eventually going head to head with the Kingpin. Astonishing work. FM really made those stories come alive.

24:48 - When I first saw this page, the lack of holding lines for the truck blew my mind. I've stared at that truck countless times in my life now. The shadow in the bed of the truck indicating form and light with A SINGLE BLACK SHAPE -- is simply mind-blowing and absolutely perfect.

For some reason I thought you guys had done this one already. Oh well, thank you for flashing it now-- it's been on my list for a long while and maybe I needed the reminder.
Fun fact: Somewhere out there, there is a photo of Frank Miller holding one of these things and it's so big it straight-up covers half of him. It's great.

19:35 Love how small the keys are in Marv's oversized giant mitts. This would look laughably silly in a different book, and while it makes us chuckle here, Miller sells it in a way that brings the reader on board with the idea of his mammoth proportions.

Lifetime comic geek from England here. Before the internet, the only comic you could buy in a regular shop was 2000 A.D. The only comic shop in the entire city of Liverpool was where i bought or swapped any American comics from, and that shop closed forever in the early 90s...So maybe you guys can appreciate just HOW difficult it was to be a teenage comic fan in the North of England before the internet came along and created amazing channels like this for us Brits. That's also the reason for the "British Invasion" of American comics which created Watchmen etc. The British company who owned 2000 A.D. were paying the artists minumum wage and using their original pages as doormats (that is actually true...can you imagine using a Brian Bolland or Dave Gibbons ORIGINAL page to wipe your muddy boots on???) So that's why the Brits came to the States, because comic art has always been treated as a joke in England. I don't have words to express how beautiful this channel is for a guy like myself. You guys are a dream come true and I really love your comics as well. You are both brilliant artists, storytellers and letterers. Thanks for everything dudes x

You can tell Miller in the initial Sin City story was still going full "Elektra Lives Again" mode because those first collection of pages are in line with that, especially when Millers drawing every damned brick of that diving sequence with Marv. He'd eventually loosen out of that style but it is one of those "I can see where you were when you did this".
Which is intense, because Miller mentioned that those pages were INCREDIBLY work intensive so that would take him days to draw. plus Marv has really defined lips at some point which makes him look like he's straight out of Elektra Lives again until he makes Marvs lips smaller at the top and more of a jutting out bottom lip after a while. It's interesting to see Millers style actively change as it goes on.
And Ed, Jim, the comic you're thinking of is "Tales of Leonardo: Blind Sight" by Jim Lawson who wrote and drew it.
EDIT: - Okay, 44:24 the second page? THAT feels Go Nagai as all hell, man.

Fun to see Miller 'find' his Sin City as the story progresses: Marv becoming more simplified and larger, police cars with wheels that stilll make contact with the street. LOL This tale and That Yellow Bastard are my favorite of the series. I think Miller's predilection with trenchcoat, Converse shoes and their soles comes from Matt Wagner's Mage comic. (Kevin could be a reference to Kevin Matchstick? )

Sin City is just ALIVE. Despite the crime riddled and seedy nature of the place, you almost want to live there! It's like this world of night and shadows, puddles in cracked pavement. Every year I HAVE to read the whole series. (All of Miller's stuff really). Crime Noir is one of my favorite genres and Miller's works are just magic. I heard he wanted to do a western Sin City sorta prequel. Def be interesting to see!

The question of why, once Marv was on death row, they let him score one last time to me speaks to the idea of the politics of the different power factions of Sin City. The Roark family is powerful but I think there is enough in the rest of the series to indicate that the girls of Old Town are also just as powerful, or at least powerful enough to maintain their own patch of turf. The Roarks had done plenty of heinous shit to the prostitutes of the city over the years so I read that part as the Old Town girls throwing Marv one last bone as a way of saying thanks.
