Thursday Boot Company is a direct to consumer brand that sells handsome boots at low prices and I’ve received a ton of requests to check out their American-made Vanguard line. Here’s what I thought of the one in Burnt Copper.
OVERVIEW
It’s a bit reminiscent of the World War 2 service boot in that it’s rugged, but the silhouette is pretty refined and streamlined. Thursday’s M.O. is to create the perfect hybrid of the dress boot and work boot, and they carried that over to the Vanguard. It’s not quite as slim as the Captain Boot, but it’s still way more versatile than your standard work boot.

LEATHER
This Burnt Copper leather is part of their new Rugged and Resilient line of leathers and it’s got a lot of character. Right out of the box you can tell it’s made to be beaten up and it’s the kind of boot that will get prettier as it gets uglier.
It’s vegetable tanned and oil tanned, which reminded me of the oil tanned boots you get from Red Wing: tough, matte, and doesn’t need babying. It is thinner than you see in most work boots at 1.7 millimeters but I think that makes for a more versatile boot - again, versatility and value are Thursday’s strong points.
LEATHER CARE
The Rugged and Resilient leather really doesn’t need much care. It’s quite moist and resilient, but if you worry about your boots drying out you might want to consider some neatsfoot oil, as that will help to maintain the color better than something like mink oil.
SEE MY COMPARISON OF RED WING’S BOOT OIL VS MINK OIL HERE: • Boot Oil vs Mink Oil -...
SOLE
Pretty similar to Dainite, this is a medium density rubber from Thursay that’s a good combination of durability, flexibility, and function. After that there’s a cork misole and a poron insole, which is an air permeable material you sometimes find in sneaker brands. (It also helps with foot stink.)
It’s also secured with a Goodyear welt, which means it’s easy to resole. Note that it doesn’t have the EVA comfort strip like the Captain, so it feels a bit less bouncy and a bit more like a traditional work boot.
WATCH MY COMPARISON OF THURSDAY AND WOLVERINE: • Wolverine Vs. Thursday...
PRICE
$265. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone handed me these boots and they were a hundred dollars more expensive - it is pricier than their other boots, but still tremendous value.

I love my Thursday vanguard, I went with the French roast. I don't wear them everyday, but when I'm not working in a machine shop, which I have to have safety boots, I wear these boots and been loving them!
Thank you! I've been waiting for this video!!!
Thanks nick. Gonna go through your link when I pick these up
Wooo thanks for the great review! Always a pleasure to watch one of your vids
Glad to see you back in the comments, Lu!
Great video man, thanks! You have a great channel and I appreciate all the work you do and wisdom you give.
Means a ton!
Thank you for a very thorough and extremely helpful review. I purchased this version of the Vanguard based on your review and I ordered true to my Brannock size - perfect! I have now placed an order for the French Roast Vanguard, same size. Again, many thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Yeah sizing with direct to consumer brands can be tricky, I was surprised these were smaller than advertised. But that's what I'm here for!
Great review! touched upon everything this potential buyer was looking for. Thank you!
Goes to the place where Indiana Jones finds the holy grail......... and doesn't wear indy boots
i JUST realized how stupid that was of me!!!!
For shame.
Remember, in Latin...Jehovah begins with an "I"
@@kevinpascual I chose my footwear... poorly
Stridewise that’s hilarious! At least you had comfortable shoes/boots 🤷♂️
Great review of what looks like a great pair of boots. Please do an update of some of the boots you own like how they are holding up after months/years of use and how well they look and feel after taking care of them. Cheers....
Thursday Boots Presidents are my daily beater boots, I work in a warehouse and they’re still looking great
Cool!
I honestly don't know why the Captains get more love than the Presidents.
Amazing :) So glad you're enjoying you boots!
I just bought a pair of the Vanguards. I don’t think there’s a better value boot anywhere for the money. Beautiful boots.
Glad I stumbled upon this review. I was looking at the Vanguards but was a little hesitant to size down until I saw this. Interestingly, I noticed on their website if you click "what's my size" they take you through a quick sizing Q&A which ended up recommending my normal size. They should probably just remove the 1/2 size down verbiage from their description of the Vanguard.
Great video as always! I've got the same model and see them more as a fashion focused version of my Copper IRs. I really like them, just wish they had speed hooks. I changed out the laces because I am not a huge fan of leather ones. Size wise, I have them in the same size as my IRs and they are much more snug. It is certainly not unbearable though.
These are rugged! Love the colour
Got these based in part on this review. I love them. Instant favorite in my rotation. Thanks!
Glad you like them Jason!
My favorite part about this video is that you beat these boots a little bit. It’s a great example of proof on how durable the leather is. Not a lot of guys are really beating their Thursday’s and I really appreciate it.
Thanks man! Yeah I always wear them around and beat them up, although sometimes (like with Taft Jack boot) they're not really made for that and it's not a great idea haha.
Stridewise I agree, you do a great job. I did like that you took these on a trip and really gave them a test. It also showed what Thursday says on their site, that they do look better after getting some wear and scratches. How did they hold up to water? Still a bit slushy here in MN and I curious if they hold up any better or worse when they get splashed with water or in light rain
I love my Captains and Vanguard. They do feel different, but both are awesome! Thanks for the video!
Glad you liked it my man!
jr4chargers Which do you prefer and why?
Another great review brother. I got the captain and am definitely getting this.
Right on Brandon!
Hey Stridewise.... just received my third pair of Thursday boots. Vanguard Indigo. You were right Bro; size up 1/2 from the Captains. Very comfortable! Keep up the good work; really enjoy your channel!
When are they going to edit their site to say Vanguards are true to size?! There must be so many sad feet out there haha. Glad you liked the vid Andrew!
Great review, Nick. I have way too many boots and now I want a pair Thursday's Vanguard boots. So many boots and only two feet...
The eternal dilemma!
Looking forward to having you a part of the Team :) !
use Brian The Bootmaker for your project boot resole...
@Jason Stewart Why not?
This is probably the coolest video about boot reviews I've ever seen.
I can't tell if this is a dig or not. It's not about boot reviews?
@@Stridewise don't take it as a dig, because it wasn't. It really was a good video with all your traveling and showing Petra. I wouldn't have subscribed if I thought your videos sucked.
I ordered the Vanguard in French Roast, which I just got a couple of weeks ago. My true-to-size is 10.5, and I ordered a 10, which fit well, even with a thicker sock, which is how I like to wear them. Great boots.
Oh glad the fit worked for you!
I was waiting on this review. I recently bought their Captains in natural chromexcel and loved it. I am certainly thinking about buying one of these. I am leaning towards the color #8. Those look beautiful. As always a thorough review.
I was looking for someone who bought or owns the naturals colorway. Does it look better than the brown ones? Does it look lighter?
@@troyjusticecabrera7284 Naturals definitely look beautiful, but I won't be able to say if they look better than brown as I don't own the brown.
@@nikhilsrl Thank you for the insight!
Awesome video and review. I just ordered the same ones today and look forward to them. I have bought other boots from Thursday's and feel these ones will be a great addition! Also..... new subscriber
Thanks for subscribing Scott! Stoked you liked it. Remember to order a half size bigger than Captains with Vanguards
Nice review. Thank you! I'm still not sure which size to get... How wide is your foot in cm? Is the EVA in the Captains replaceable?
Going crazy for boots this season
Get after it!
Bout time I tried these out! I’m rotating these, my Blacksmiths, my Iron Rangers, and my Tecovas Earls each week. Love my Vanguards. Customer service rocked too...
That's a fine collection, Steve!
Haha I have these Blacksmiths and Iron Rangers in my rotation too! Nice!
Amazing review. Spot on
I bought the President tobacco and it’s made of the rugged leather like the USA vanguard. This leather is tough and stiff out of the box. The first two days concerned me because they absolutely killed my feet. But now they are really shaped to my feet and feel amazing. The Thursday chrome leather need no break in period at all. I have the explorers boot by Thursday in brown and it’s a much softer leather
This is the video that got me to buy a pair of Thursdays👌
Awesome dude, glad to be of use!
Excellent review Nick. I always look forward to seeing a notification pop up regarding one of your latest productions available on You Tube. This one did not disappoint. You do a great job of discussing the various pros and cons of Thursday’s Vanguard Boot. I really like the look and texture of the leather, which appears similar to an Allen Edmond’s Normandy Boot I recently purchased. The AE Normandy boot is quickly becoming one of my favorites, thus, I can see why you are excited about The Vanguard Boot, which comes in at around $100 less than the AE Normandy. It sounds like you really did an exhaustive “road test” on the Vanguard and from all appearances they seem to have held up quite well. I’m curious if you foresee Thursday making more of its boots in the U.S? If so, it would seem like Thursday would need to partner with a major U.S. Footwear manufacturer to pull it off. What are your thoughts as to what direction Thursday might be going? Getting back to the review, I think you covered all the bases quite adequately. Another fine Stridewise production! Well done...
Thanks, Ed! I think Thursday's $199 boots are like a big deal for them but they might do more American made stuff. For now though I think they're focusing more on apparel - they made the jacket I wear in this video and I think they're working on more clothing items
your reviews are fantastic.. Super detailed and you cover all areas . You are like a high level black belt boot reviewer . I get pulled in on all your reviews from the start and they play a big part in which boots I will buy. I would love if you ever did a review on Mark ALbert boots. A small company in PA . they look a lot like viberg service boot and the Truman service boot.
7th degree black belt in Goodyear welts haha thank you, this gave me my first laugh of the day. I have done a Mark Albert review! It's not published yet but if you want to read the script you can email me
I got these in the French Roast, I'm in love! Luckily I live in NYC and work a few blocks away from their 21 Street showroom. I was able to go in and try them on, I definitely, recommend you get the Vanguards in true to size!
For sure, Steven!
I just got the same one today
Hello stridewise your channel its amazing i learn alot of boots , ive a qstn how can i clean the leather of the clarks beeswax ?
I really like them . Good review . Thanks .
Just picked up this exact pair, I have a pair of captains and I got them true to my sneaker size and there are just a hair big so I wen a half size down on the vanguards. Looking forward to putting them through the paces this fall/winter
Made in the USA! Awesome!
Would u recommend getting true to size with the loggers as well?
I’ve been watching tons of your videos. Love them, but would like to see more styles reviewed such as engineer boots (Frye, Welco, Ranch Road) and maybe Tecovas boots and some other styles.
This year I want to do a lot more chelseas, which are more popular and would make more sense for me like, traffic wise. But engineer boots are on the to do list! It's a big world out there.
Great reviews about boots! I've watching some of your video and one of them is from Indonesia. How cool is that!
Two of them are from Indonesia! Here's Sagara: ua-cam.com/video/wy9WlQ5fhKs/v-deo.html
Perfect timing as I've literally got a pair of French Roast in my cart but not a lot of reviews on the Vanguard! I'm also between a 11.5-12 in size and this made me reconsider getting an 11D. Interested to know which boot you like more between this and the Captain! Thanks
The Captain is sort of a more exciting boot with the EVA strip, like it feels like something very different while these feel more traditional. It depends on what you like.
I’d really like to try this boot in the dogger/Cuban heal with the waxed flesh leather, but they only going to 11 on that one. I wear a 12 in sneakers and 11-11.5 in most boots with a slightly wider than D width foot. If that last is narrower fitting, then I’m worried that it won’t work. Thanks for the great content as per usual. I basically only consider boots reviewed by you, Rose Anvil, and/or Trenton & Heath at this point. Y’all are the best!
Planning to buy a pair of Thursday Boot Majors and I normally wear a size US9 in Jordan 1s (I'm a 9.5 on the Brannock device). What size should i get for the Majors? Thanks
Hi Nick. Mate, did you find this leather very similar to the Chippewa service boot Crazy Horse leather?
May i just ask how did you lighten the colour of these? The colour is a lot lighter when they come out of the box
I just ordered this pair today!
Wooo hooo! Welcome to the Team :)
Great review and good looking boot. Nick! Should I go down a half size or stick with my regular shoe size...sounds like these are pretty tight going down a half size??
Yeah I think regular size is best for these
You took the right colour boots to the wadi rum desert. I went there with some merrels and I could see the red sand in them 10 years later. How quickly does the poron get compressed or lose cushion? Once it does maybe there will be space so can you put another thin poron insole on top.
Please review Cobbler union. Specifically their Winchester boot, how does it compare to Thursday captain boot for a dress boot
You finally reviewed the Vanguards! :D
Yeah I really don't pay as much attention to Thursday as I should haha but I really like this boot
@@Stridewise I'm glad you did because I've been eyeing these Burnt Copper Vanguards for a while now. Will you be reviewing some of their other styles as well? Also, are you planning on reviewing dress shoes in the future?
I'm trying to stay in the more ruggedy men's fashion area for now, like I want to review denim and jackets and stuff. Maybe dress shoes in the future!
@@Stridewise Nice, I remember the video you released recently in which you bought the hoodies, denim, and watches. Any hints as to which you are going to review first?
Very thorough review, but what about the toe? it looks quite constructed compared to Captain's. thanks
What trousers are you rocking? Grey Chino pants? Thanks 🙏
If I had a pair of Thursday boots in black and wanted to put on some protectant, could I use Obenaufs oil or LP? I don't care if it gets darker because it will be black anyways. Thanks for your help!
Thank you for addressing the size. That was the last thing that for the life of me I could not find an opinion on outside of the company lol
Yeah I feel like I'm going crazy the only guy who finds them true to size hahah
Have you ever thought about checking out Astorflex boots? Handmade in Italy and reasonably priced.
I'm just waiting till a review comes out for the thursday logger
please review the thursday boot diplomat, arizona red.
What grey chinos are you rocking in video? Thanks 🙏
Awesome reviews you do Nick! You have a new subscriber. I’d like to check out the Jordanian/Middle East desert too. Please share your trip details? I’d like to do some of my own research on the boots durability in the desert there ;)
Haha yeah that footage was taken in Wadi Rum and Petra! Glad you like the channel, Pitseolak!
Great Video! Would you consider these as a more rugged/outdoorsy version of the Captain?
Yeah but to be fair the Captain comes in leathers like Arizona Adobe that are pretty tough and outdoorsy as well. The main difference is they're American made and they have a more traditional type of construction (like without the EVA footbed)
Thursday need to make it easier to buy these in the UK!
Great now im not shure should i go for this or Iron ranges. How do they shipp to Europe?
Does anyone know when Viburg's fashion week is?
Just received my pair of vanguard burnt copper. I usually wear a 9.5 so ordered the size 9 and they fit great. The leather is a little stiff, but they are comfortable, even during break in period.
I got these over the captains but can already tell speed hooks would make these boots better.
The burnt copper color is nice in that it changes shades depending on the lighting and angle. Although I thought the leather would be a little darker overall. Not sure if there’s something I can do to darken the leather… hopefully it naturally darkens a little over time.
Great boots though, can tell these will hold up over time.
Damn bro, you convinced me to get the captains and the iron rangers now I’m gonna get me a pair of vanguards.
Instead of getting 3 mid tier models. Why not look at some higher end stuff. You're spending the money anyway
Do yourself a favor, save your money a little longer, and buy some White's, Nick's, Wesco's, or Vibergs instead. The difference in quality will blow you away.
Jonathon Wood what would you say is the better boot between the Viberg and Whites boots...
Where did you get that bomber jacket in the beginning. Absolutely gorgeous.
Oh thanks, that's from Thursday as well thursdayboots.com/collections/mens-jackets
Hello sir, love your reviews. Copped the Vanguards after watching your reviews over n over. I had them for over a year and wear them over my Vibergs, Truman’s, and Aldens. Absolutely my daily wear. Do you recommend using a saddle soap to clean and condition? Thank you.
Hey Jay, so glad you like them!! I'd agree they feel better than Vibergs and Trumans, I think I like my Aldens a bit more for comfort but they're not as versatile as the Vanguards. I haven't used Saddle Soap ever, which I know is crazy. I'm going to try it on my Iron Rangers some time, but for now I can't speak to it!
Great review. Very informative. Thanks!
Glad you liked it, Omar!
I just ordered a pair of the Vanguards with a Vibram lug sole. Reminds me of Timberlands. I can't find any real info about them. From what I can tell the called the leather color Honey and the sole color Honey. Looking forward to giving them that bear up worn in look. I've really been into USA made boots as of late so I when I learned that they were made in the US I was stoked. Do you happen to know which factory produces them? All I could learn was it was a plant in Arkansas. I suspect is was Munro & Co Inc. They have produced some of the limited run boots for Timberland in the past.
How does this copper leather compare to the Copper Rough & Tough Red Wing leather? I assume it's sort of a similar tanning process and a similar use-case for the boots.
Curious if you've heard any other feedback in vanguard sizing? I have two pairs of captains in brandy and Old English and they fit extremely comfortably, but I do have to loosen the laces of bit to wear boot socks and prefer a bit more toe room.I size down 1/2 size as Thursday recommended on my captains and I'm about to pull a trigger on some burnt copper vanguard's and wanted your fellow up opinion on comfort. Do you still think that you would have preferred to go true size on the Vanguard model? Thanks much. Your videos are superb and have been very helpful in my purchasing and care decisions.
There are a lot of comments on this video from people agreeing with my concerns on sizing, and yeah I would recommend going true to size. Worth reaching out and asking if they've changed the last/sizing since I did this video just to double check but if not go TTS!
Great review. Definitely looking at picking these up in French Roast. How would you say they compare to Iron Rangers, in terms of sizing? My IRs are a US 12/D. Would you say I'd be beet picking up a 12 in these, too?
Sizing needs to be right from the word go, as return shipping from the UK could get a little pricy.
I'm an 11 in Iron Rangers and 11.5 in Vanguards, so I'd suggest going up a half size. Double check with Thursday that they haven't changed the sizing since I made the video though ;)
Love the review, where is your denim from ?!
Studio d'Artisan! Got a review going up this week
Just curious…why did you choose the rugged and resilient vanguard over the Horween leathers? Is that just what they sent you?
Bought a pair of Vanguards in Essex about 2-years ago and thought I share my experience. The quality is really good, although the sizing on their website is totally arbitrary and off. They recommend sizing 1/2 a size down on your dress shoes. I have a pair of Allen Edmonds in 10.5 that fit really well so I bought a size 10. They were tight and hurt my feet, but they say they should be tight so they can stretch out. I thought I would see how they go because as an international customer it is really expensive to return them. Over time the leather stretched out so much that my foot is over the welt and very uncomfortable. I am a size 11D - E on a Brannock device, the average North American male is an E width. Basically, the sizing recommendation pointed me towards a size 10 when I should be a size 11 (this is not based on the Brannock device as companies do fit does not follow this). I emailed customer service and they take no responsiblity for their sizing recommendation, it is totally arbitrary. The customer service representative did say straight out the Vanguard is designed to fit D and E widths. Their customer service is not good, in my experience, a real shame because these boots have so much potential. Unfortunately, it was a big waste of money for me and a bad experience. Hope this helps anyone thinking about Thursday Boot.
Haha I totally agree this boot is true to size, not a size down. I'm hoping I saved some guys your experience by specifying that in the video, no idea why they haven't changed the recommndations on the site though.
This boots vs the Thursday captain?
Nice. First and foremost, I look for quality, comfort and style. Once that is met, I try to purchase shoes made in the US. Like Germans, Canadians and other nation’s citizens... I understand that large trade deficits are not good for long term prosperity and jobs. I really appreciate that you take the time to review shoes and give us your knowledgeable opinion. Quality shoes are extremely important to the health of our feet, knees, legs and yes even our backs. If a individual learns to take care of their shoes, they can last a lifetime and rather than throw the shoes away as they are worn, take or send them to a quality shoe Cobbler and keep for a very long time. I’ve found that most American made shoes are very, very good. The older the design, quite often the longer the break in period. Red wing boots, in particular seem to take a good long time to truly break in. I have a pair of American made Redwings that were just under $300. They have a wedge sole and are in between a Chukka and a 6”. They have been the most uncomfortable work boot I’ve ever owned. Now, as I’ve aged, I’ve needed significantly better arch support and more padding in the shoe. As we age, most of us loose the fat/padding on our feet and also our arches begin to break down if we don’t wear shoes that provide that support. For example, at 26, I wore a 9 d. Today I wear a 10 d or 10 E. 40 years ago it was common to have shoe stores measure your arch and then install (glue in place) arch support cookies. Back then they were often rubber or leather. It helped a lot if you had large arches.
Anyway, thank you for the review and your insights.
how is the sizing compared to the iron rnagers? im a 10 in iron rangers a 11 in sneakers cus i got quite wide feet so im a little confused
Thanks for your review. Do you think that this and captain boots look good with chinos and khaki pants?
Chinos and khakis? This particular leather is a bit rugged tbh but there are dressier leathers in both shoes
Nice video! Im a new subscriber. Those look like the boots Marines wore in WW2 and Korea by the way.
Hi Nick, I've been wearing 8.5 sneakers. I've ordered a Thursday Boot Chukka and still have about an 1" of toe room. Then, recently got an actual feet measurements and I'm actually size 7...on Captain do you think I'll be on going with 7.5? Thanks in advance!
If you're a 7 on a Brannocok device I'd go with a 7 or a 6.5 with the Vanguards. Maybe start with a 7?
Im looking for that discount code
I just ordered a pair in black. It looks like the toe is slightly more rounded than captains. Is this true?
A couple questions: I don't have any boots in chromexcel. As far as the leathers outside the rough and ready ones, would you recommend going with horween or Thursday's in house tannery based on your experience? Also, I work outside in a lot of mud. Do you think the leather from this video would be substantially better than the other leathers on offer for getting muddied up and hosed down? Is this model substantially tougher than the president/captain, etc. in your experience?
I'd say yes it's better for getting muddy than the other leathers. As for Chromexcel versus Thursday leather, honestly I think it's worth getting a pair of nice Chromexcel boots. It's the most famous boot leather there is. That said I think it creases more easily than Thursday's leather, at least in my experience.
Definitely size up a half side from your typical boot size. I got mine in size 7, which is my normal size for Wolverine 1000 and Taft, and my toes are super uncomfortably packed if I'm not wearing super thin socks. They're fairly new right now so I'm hoping they'll stretch as they're worn in, but I don't see being able to walk long distance with them on as of this moment. Besides that, super beautiful boots (mine is in French Roast). I've had them for two weeks and I've gotten a ton of unsolicited compliments. Pretty much every time I went out with them really.
Yeah I'm glad I was able to give people that tip! Glad you still like yours. Thin socks for a while and I think you'll be OK.
Hey Ddreadster! So glad you're enjoying your boots. The leather will naturally give with time and wear. What may help is to wear the boots a few hours a day in your home so you can slowly break them in!
Hi great video. Can you tell me what the sizing is like please? I'm in the UK and don't want to order the wrong size
They're true to size with American sizes. So in the US I'm 11.5 on a Brannock device and these are 11.5.
Great review. Would you be willing to do a review for Thursday's Chelsea Boots?
Yep I have two pairs! Will review soon
@@Stridewise Looking forward to it!

So I have these exact pair. And I'm about to clean them but I'm not sure if to use a conditioner on them. They have scratches that I would like to minimize as possible. What would you recommend? I just order an imperial venetian leather balm.
It's tough with this leather because Thursday themselves really kind of told me they don't condition it, it's not meant to need much conditioning. I'd go with neatsfoot oil myself and see what happens. Giving it a vigorous brush should help with scratches.
Please try out the new logger design!
You should review the cadet boots!
Can some of these attributes be applied to any of the rugged and resilient boots from the company? Or is it specifically only the fully American made stuff?
Yes, it can be! I think the leather is all the same on the rugged and resilient boots, like tanned the same way
Have used the redwing leather cream on my Arizona adobe rough and tough leather and it darkened slightly, changed the texture a bit.... but looks great.
Good to know! It's so confusing when you're told a leather just doesn't need conditioner haha
how would you compare the sizing to an iron ranger ? Would you stay the same size as the iron ranger or go up 1/2 size ?
Go up half a size for the Vanguards.
How big is the heel?
Nick first off found you a few days ago while boot shopping been going through your vids learned a lot , great stuff. Love the Vangard but usually wear an EE or EEE due to high instep of course just my luck this boot not offered in wide, how is that area? Big enough? I wear a 13 & I know they run big but do not need length beyond 13 need height.
Oh, and maybe a Red Wing Sheldon review? I was looking at getting some Iron Rangers but then I saw the Sheldons and they appealed to me more; they looked a little more "dressy" to me.
Iron rangers are far from dressy
