Wall-flow diesel particulate filters usually remove 85% or more of the soot, and under certain conditions can attain soot removal efficiencies approaching 100%. Some filters are single-use, intended for disposal and replacement once full of accumulated ash. Others are designed to burn off the accumulated particulate either passively through the use of a catalyst or by active means such as a fuel burner which heats the filter to soot combustion temperatures. This is accomplished by engine programming to run (when the filter is full) in a manner that elevates exhaust temperature, in conjunction with an extra fuel injector in the exhaust stream that injects fuel to react with a catalyst element to burn off accumulated soot in the DPF filter,[3] or through other methods. This is known as filter regeneration. Cleaning is also required as part of periodic maintenance, and it must be done carefully to avoid damaging the filter. Failure of fuel injectors or turbochargers resulting in contamination of the filter with raw diesel or engine oil can also necessitate cleaning.[4] The regeneration process occurs at road speeds higher than can generally be attained on city streets; vehicles driven exclusively at low speeds in urban traffic can require periodic trips at higher speeds to clean out the DPF.[5] If the driver ignores the warning light and waits too long to operate the vehicle above 60 km/h (40 mph), the DPF may not regenerate properly, and continued operation past that point may spoil the DPF completely so it must be replaced.[6] Some newer diesel engines, namely those installed in combination vehicles, can also perform what is called a Parked Regeneration, where the engine increases RPM to around 1400 while parked, to increase the temperature of the exhaust.
Diesel engines produce a variety of particles during combustion of the fuel/air mix due to incomplete combustion. The composition of the particles varies widely dependent upon engine type, age, and the emissions specification that the engine was designed to meet. Two-stroke diesel engines produce more particulate per unit of power than do four-strokediesel engines, as they burn the fuel-air mix less completely.[7]
Diesel particulate matter resulting from the incomplete combustion of diesel fuel produces soot(black carbon) particles. These particles include tiny nanoparticles-smaller than a one micrometre (one micron). Soot and other particles from diesel engines worsen the particulate matter pollution in the air and are harmful to health.[8]
New particulate filters can capture from 30% to greater than 95% of the harmful soot.[9] With an optimal diesel particulate filter (DPF), soot emissions may be decreased to 0.001 g/km or less.[10]
The quality of the fuel also influences the formation of these

@@peterdatechmen5506 5.1KPa without the engine running? Why bother running a pressure differential? He then probed the power which also proved the sensor is giving a false signal but still felt the need to generate a signal. The term using a sledgehammer to crack a nut springs to mind. It doesn't take a genius to work out that a pressure sensor being exposed to exhaust gases is going to have a rough life. Most people would rightly take the sensor off to inspect it after seeing a spurious reading, he calls Chris Topher a "part changer" and attempts to publicly shame him by pinning the post, well he likes to call people names I have one for him too, a Bully! There is more than one way to a diagnosis.

Hi this in my opinion was a awesome demonstration of the correct procedure of fault finding instead of doing gas work. The idea was not only show that the sensor had to be replaced but show and prove that everything else was fine before pointing at the clogged sensor.I have 25 years of experience and sometimes I rush things by being a parts changer and there was times where I was caught on the the wrong side. This video is purely based on theory for a apprentice/trainee. Well done I take my hat off for you despite the negative comments.

So I have a BMW 335D & I suspect this to be the culprit as the high pressure does not change regardless of what the engine is doing.

Having some minor dpf issues lately made me monitor it for a couple of days. I was also curious of state of my DPF. It's a 2012 Mondeo 2.0 tdci. You can get so many opinions on the differential pressure that I am now even more confuzed if mine is good or not. So I get 0.0 kpa at idle. Driving in 5th gear, steady speed of 100km/h, 2000rpm, I get 2.0 - 4.0 depending on road incline, or last regen. 140km/h in 6th, I get around 7kpa. Full engine load at high speed gets up to about 17-18 kpa. Some say my dpf is blocked, some say it's totally fine. Does it sound like it's alright?

@@aqib2000 not all of them and very few before 2018. If it bothers anyone that much they source a car without one! Petrol particulate filters aren’t prone to getting blocked up like diesel particulate filters because petrol engines heat up quicker and run hotter than diesel engines, so more of the soot that’s collected in the filter is burnt off.

Citroën CX 2.0 HDI. Regeneration every 250 km too many short rides in town. With EGR Off regeneration every 900 km.
To check regeneration connect a control lamp to the rear window heater connection. When regeneration is active keep - lamp on - driving until the control lamp goes out. So you be sure regeneration proces is complete. If you not let complete the regeneration it will repeats over and over again. This means more consumption, degradation of te engine oil and faulty glow plugs.

A very helpful fix for drivers would be if the car itself gave info on how full the dpf is . That way they could judge better when to take the car for a regeneration run . Long before the yellow drive to clear light comes on . This would help people manage the dpf and avoid costly repairs.

Hi mate it could be as you can see from the video too many things you will have to get it diagnosed properly if you don't have the tools you'll have to go to somebody that does there is no point guessing in this as it will cost you a fortune if you are wrong you can see what I had to do to make sure I got the diagnoses correct you do not just guess

Something doesn't add up with what you were doing at 7:38 if the fault was a damaged sensor. Or was the Hubitools thing not set to the correct scale?

    • @bodgitandleggitgarage

Everything adds up perfectly what's the video again what's the end of the video the problem was the sensor was faulty it wasn't reading correctly it would only read from 50 mv upwards it would not read from 0 to 50 that's why by the wiring is ok the hubitools tool was ok I explained everything in the video

      @@sdgelectronics what he did was get the pressure values mixed up...50mbar was the correct value at around 0.75v, 0kpa (0mbar) = 0.5v. 111kpa (1110mbar) = 4.5v
The sensor was blocked up with the diaphragm deflecting to 5kpa (50mbar) which is the 0.75v reading.

Good morning. I really need a little help before l get ripped off at Audi. I have a 2007 Audi a4 b7 2.0 tdi. And l the DPF Come up on my dashboard. Audi have told me l need to replace the DPF. @ £1100 odd plus the labour and vat. I only have a code reader. And got the code 2002. Which says DPF below criteria. Every time l clear the fault , it comes back straight away. Can you please if point me in the right direction. Any help here would be most gratefully received.

hi mate as you can imagine it's going to be impossible for me to guess and tell you what is wrong without looking and diagnosing the car properly but I would suggest you go to somebody who can do a forced regen or clean your DPF the chances that it is just blocked and can be saved is very high but it will need to be diagnosed properly before that no point me saying anything as I don't want to put you in the wrong place and cause you money and especially to waste your money but I would say it can be cleaned

You may find the liquid which comes out isn't water/condensation but actually acid. There's been issues with the rubber pipes degrading which then allows the exhaust gas to react with the rubber causing an acid to be produced which goes into the sensor and buggers them up.
