Wall-flow diesel particulate filters usually remove 85% or more of the soot, and under certain conditions can attain soot removal efficiencies approaching 100%. Some filters are single-use, intended for disposal and replacement once full of accumulated ash. Others are designed to burn off the accumulated particulate either passively through the use of a catalyst or by active means such as a fuel burner which heats the filter to soot combustion temperatures. This is accomplished by engine programming to run (when the filter is full) in a manner that elevates exhaust temperature, in conjunction with an extra fuel injector in the exhaust stream that injects fuel to react with a catalyst element to burn off accumulated soot in the DPF filter,[3] or through other methods. This is known as filter regeneration. Cleaning is also required as part of periodic maintenance, and it must be done carefully to avoid damaging the filter. Failure of fuel injectors or turbochargers resulting in contamination of the filter with raw diesel or engine oil can also necessitate cleaning.[4] The regeneration process occurs at road speeds higher than can generally be attained on city streets; vehicles driven exclusively at low speeds in urban traffic can require periodic trips at higher speeds to clean out the DPF.[5] If the driver ignores the warning light and waits too long to operate the vehicle above 60 km/h (40 mph), the DPF may not regenerate properly, and continued operation past that point may spoil the DPF completely so it must be replaced.[6] Some newer diesel engines, namely those installed in combination vehicles, can also perform what is called a Parked Regeneration, where the engine increases RPM to around 1400 while parked, to increase the temperature of the exhaust.
Diesel engines produce a variety of particles during combustion of the fuel/air mix due to incomplete combustion. The composition of the particles varies widely dependent upon engine type, age, and the emissions specification that the engine was designed to meet. Two-stroke diesel engines produce more particulate per unit of power than do four-strokediesel engines, as they burn the fuel-air mix less completely.[7]
Diesel particulate matter resulting from the incomplete combustion of diesel fuel produces soot(black carbon) particles. These particles include tiny nanoparticles-smaller than a one micrometre (one micron). Soot and other particles from diesel engines worsen the particulate matter pollution in the air and are harmful to health.[8]
New particulate filters can capture from 30% to greater than 95% of the harmful soot.[9] With an optimal diesel particulate filter (DPF), soot emissions may be decreased to 0.001 g/km or less.[10]
The quality of the fuel also influences the formation of these particles. For example, a high sulfur content diesel produces more particles. Lower sulfur fuel produces fewer particles, and allows use of particulate filters. The injection pressure of diesel also influences the formation of fine particles

Fantastic advice from a real mechanic. Most would say its all sorts of things and charge you a small fortune. This video needs to be shared far and wide to help prevent people from being ripped off !!!
I’ve worked in the industry longer than you and I’ve never met anyone who WANTS to rip anyone off. I’ve seen misdiagnosis before, yes, that is called human error, but all you can do is try to do better next time. We can only hope to be as perfect as you.
JEEZ an honest mechanic THE WORLD IS CHANGING FOR THE BETTER, JUST WISH I KNEW WHERE YOU ARE AS I HAVE AN VW POLO 1.6TDI WITH THE DREADED DPF. I;M Ex mechanic,Ex class 1 lorry driver and Ex mobile Crane operator but got very sick 2010 so find it hard to work on my own car. LOVE THE TIP THOUGH MATE THANK YOU SCOOBS UK.
Really Genius, a piece of advice that is hard to imagine... BIG THANK YOU!
That really was an excellent tip. So bloody common DPF and EGR problems these days. Thanks fellas.
Thanks mate
Thanks for your help with this! Dealing with a sprinter in limp mode as well as a hissing noise that i just picked up. Hoping its something as simple as the hose
Wish I knew these things prior to having a car with a DPF. Could have saved a lot of money and many headaches.
Fantastic video, I've already changed sensor, cleaning fluid etc
Another great video Leon, and something that every diesel owner should watch! Thanks mate, and hope you are staying safe and well.
Thanks mate you too
I'm looking at a Vauxhall insignia, dpf fault in limp mode ,that's all the info I have on vehicle
Fantastic advice, now I know what to look for !
Fascinating...thanks for sharing this with us!
Great stuff my friend...always great to see tips like this Leon!
Thanks mate
Thanks mate, you are right. Always, first look at the simple components.
Proper mechanic, the plug in “technicians” today would state new DPF every time!
Exactly. Most shitty "mechanics" nowadays only know hot to replace parts which any monkey with proper tools and a lift can do. Proper troubleshooting and understanding how stuff works doesn't happen anymore
Damn straight.
They're doing that to me right now. Telling me I need a new one
Amazing people still around 🎉
Thanks lads, I’ve got a Citroen Berlingo van just gone in limp mode DPF blocked warning. Will check the pipe first. 👍🏾
Thanks mate, I've got one tomorrow, on a A3 Audi, and I'd never have thought of this first .
IOU. 1Pint, Guinness.
Thx for a great video! I´m to replace my dpf pressure sensor tomorrow because of second time "soot filter full" and limp mode, first time a guy I know at a volvo shop did a force regen with Volvo Vida, took half a tank of diesel in 35minutes.... will def check the hoses at the same time!
Hi did the pressure sensor work?
Excellent tip...Thank you so much for sharing it with us.
Thanks mate
phewww i bet that was 'exhausting work, Leon 🙂 Thanks for that great video, as ever, keep producing them please, BLESS 😇
Just had this on my 1.6 tdci cmax. Hose had split and put the car into limp mode. Sorted the hose but it wouldn’t come out of limp mode. Apparently it needs to have the values reset on the ECU cos it remembers the old values where’s it got sent into limp mode. Also the hoses are £££. It’s a high temp hose. Replaced it with a high temp fuel line.
Happened to my 2009 Mondeo a few years back also. The entire hose at the back connection was burnt completely off. I just replaced both hoses with transparent silicone hoses. Still works perfect.
boom sorted
What is max temperature those pipes should be able to handle? I am not able to find one for mye car. It is Volvo v50 d2.
Excellent tip, thanks Leon, stay safe.
Thanks mate you too
I’ve got a message on the scanner vehicle conditions incorrect for dpf regen 😡 I’m now thinking have a look at the pipes - great video Leon 👍🏻
Great video my VW Transporter 5cyl was plagued by DPF blocking and sensor problems and a simple pipe could have been the key to solving that. The garage repeatedly replaced the sensor as faulty then after 2 years on limp mode said the only option was to remove the DPF and remap.
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed the video may be best off not thinking about that he could have just been a split pips
I'm going thru it some mechanics are clueless but know what they charge
Awesome tip mate, the pipe looked perfect before removing the sleeve 👍👍👍👍 cheers
Thanks mate boom sorted lol
I hope God blesses you guys good for you trying to help others so good heartedly.. thanks.. got issues with an injector and glow plug fault codes showing up on Dacia Duster but I'm thinking it might be cables or something like that as it's only done just over 30,000 miles
That an excellent find , good stuff 👍👍, I'll always be checking pipes like that now
Thanks mate
great tip, il check the car im working on tommorow and see if the other mechanic missed this.
Yeah , boost actuator! It happen to me too . I thought I needed a new turbo, but only a couple of dollars for new rubber hose 👍👍👍
Well found. Had the same problem myself, but with vac lines.
Thanks mate
Really great advice and stuff . Cheers
Thanks mate
Very useful, I have the same problem on my Grand Scenic lll (engine light on, check injection system, pollution system and cruise control) Renault said its the air intake hose at the front of the engine, another says its the 02 sensor at the back of the engine!!
Where are these pipes you are showing please?? Renault Grand Scenic 1.6dci 2014
Thank mate a very good video I learn a lot.
Great information thanks
Brilliant work!
What cleaning fluid do you recommend….? Are the in tank ones any good…? Great video thanks 💪💪💪💪
This is a great vid 👍Car booked in again on Monday dpf issues. This could be the case. We will see 👍
🤞
Nope, it was just super duper blocked from previous owner. 94% blocked 😬Cleaned out now and running like a dream 👌
Wow well good tip...nice one fella
Very common on the focus 1.6tdci 👍 and the vapourisor on the 2.0 and transits , the new shape quasqui pressure sensor pipe blocks up and a pita to get to 🤦♂️
👍💪
Been diagnosing a mk8 ford transit that someone else has diagnosed as a blown engine but decided to opt for another opinion. Engine will start and run for a few seconds and while it’s running it don’t knock or rattle. If revs are held high the vehicle is able to be put in gear and moved but it hasn’t got any power. The conclusion I’ve come too is that the turbo has failed due too the dpf being blocked but I don’t know as much as I wish I did about dpfs too know what too check and how to carry out the checks to figure out if the dpf blocked due to round town low revs and low speed driving or if something else has failed causing the dpf too block. Reason I’m commenting is that I know your not a UA-cam diy mechanic your a knowledgable technician within the motor trade and as a mechanic my self I would rather see if I can get advise from someone who has spent years working on vehicles over any 5 minute mechanics that UA-cam has too offer.
yes at the beginning of the day my ford figo 1.4tdci also runs fine but after 1-2km it struggles and runs roughly throughout the day. This happens everyday and I can't solve the problem
Great tip Leon Thanks - Best fix - Bit of super glue and as they are special pipes - gaffer tape (instead of electrical tape) job done - Boom Sorted LOL Keep safe and well - Best wishes Clay.
Lol thanks mate
I would have thought a replacment hose was the best fix??
@@N269 - New pipes 🤔- Don't forget this was during "lockdown times when nowhere was open - Probably new pipes would be best but where's the fun in that and think of the expense - 👍🤣🤣🤣Best wishes Clay
I had this on my Mk4 Mondeo around 60,000 miles ago. I replaced the hoses with standard fuel hose and it's been fine ever since
👍💪
Yeah, was thinking same. You might also consider exhaust hose, if you can fnd it that small. Marine fuel hose (reinforced/thick wall) would also be appropriate.
Will this show as a fault if u run a diagnostic test. Also will the system still perform active/passive regens? Cheers.
Hello, thanks for the video. I have Fiat Bravo 2008 1.6 multijet diesel. The car keeps regenerating way too often even after EGR repair and unstable idle repair (which was from the Throttle body electronics). When I scan the DPF I can see that sometimes it is about 31-38% but also very often there is a log which always states 64% and 107k km exactly. Can it be a fault in some DPF sensor or something stuck in the software? The car has power and good fuel consumption. Thanks!
Wear is the dpf hose located? Ive had the problem for a year now, constant alarm going, it used to clear after every long drive but as of last week the dpf warning sign has stayed on. I did think it might be something more to do with a pressure sensor etc as it's been happening for so long with no actual driving problems.
Awesome work well done
done loads of these on mondeos also injector blocks up and can be cleaned with welding wire. A real PIA to get out tho very very tight. The pipe is very expensive as well
You can get good aftermarket pipes now
Yes mate it's a nightmare when they get blocked
Yes mate you just need to make sure you get the exact right pipes otherwise they would just melt on u
Great advice, but just where is this pipe, you did not show the removal of it?
How does these hoses connect from the dpf to the sensor? Does bottom hose connect to the bigger pipe on the sensor and the top hose to the small pipe on the sensor. Or vice versa?
At my wits end with a 2013 Ford Transit. £2k in so far and still in limp mode. New glo plugs, new DPF. Off the road every other week
Did you have a part number for the hoses? Just in case. I’m gonna check here soon
Is there a tank for the DPF cleaning liquid in a ford focus 2016 TDCI 1.5? And where it is located? Thank you.
hi mate have you done a video on removal of fuel fiter on a 2009 vauxhall antara 2.0 deiesel cannot find any videos on this cheers joe
Good stuff lads, great tip, thankyou:):)
Thanks mate
Great advice Leon
Thanks mate
What if when your doing DPR regen if gas is coming out through muffler? Is it pip thar throw gas ? Mixing ?
Great catch mate!!!Cheers!
Thanks mate
Was that the differential pressure sensor?
What would be the symptoms likely please ? Ty
I didn’t think the PDF’s are so expensive any more. I challenged a Peugeot main dealer about this. £1200 fitted for a Partner HDI. I said nope, I’ll go elsewhere, get one and fit myself. Dealer then say they can supply me a ‘spurious’ one. Ahh you mean a pattern part that’s half the price and comes out the same factory. Yes please! £220 later, four bolts and a play on the laptop later, it’s fixed. £1200 my ar@e!
Great video this one. I’m sure at a main dealer that would have been a DPF and a pipe mind.
👍
good tip my covers are a bit frayed ill need to check them, hoping they are ok
👍💪 good luck mate
I've got a citroen relay 2016 and I'm getting a p2002
Done a reading on it and I'm getting 0 pressure at idle and max rpm
Its also showing there is 0g of soot in dpf
Eml is on but the dfp light isn't just wonder what this problem could be
THANK YOU!
Had to change the pipes on my mk4 mondeo with same code, ordered silicone pipes from ebay for £3.50 and spent 10 mins changing them.... mine gets a good run every day sk no need to force a regen....
💪👍
Good work lads, good old school mechanics, look for the problem with hands, eye’s and brain before trusting and just relying upon a computer basically. Big thumbs up from me 👍👍👍
Quality content as usual 👌🏼
Thanks mate
The car saw me an alert of a car and a key. The pc of the mechanic saws problem 1901 sensor dpf.
The turbo of the car doesn't work.
The problems maybe are?
And the solution maybe what?
Give an advice
Thank you
My 2011vwpasst 1.6 tdi drops in power when I hit 120km would that be a vacuum leak or a faulty exhaust pressure sensor.? Thanks
I have Insignia eco flex 2014 goes to limp mode after front smash central locking don't work no horn and Navi 9000 won't light up ,what can fix it please if turn off on off ignition it does work need to sort it ,guy sold me it never told me was wrote off
Very nice job.
Great Vid Leon 👍
Thanks mate
Hi, I have a 1.6tdi psa engine mazda 3 bk (mazda, focus, volvo 1.6 diesel) and i often get surging and an error code P024B, often felt to me like an air leak of some sort. Could it be this? I am defo going to look at the hoses from dof. Excellent video thanks. Just have to find the hose now 🙂 👍
Hi mate it certainly a possibility no harm to check
Would this problem make it feel as if i have no power under foot ?
Great clear video, would this cause high kpa/psi reading? I have limp home 3krpm limited. I unplug comes out off limp cheers
Unplug maf
Top tip mate 👍
Thanks mate
Hi my dpf pressure sensor have 2 hoses one of them is not conected and the car is idle at 1000 rpm cant find connection for hose
Impressive. Never overlook the simple and not too obvious. D
Thanks mate
Would this course a loss off power and hold the car from pulling. I have a 11 plate zafira 1.7 and have a code off 2452 .
would these cause turbo to wine and not showing any faulits code
👌👌👌👌 Love to know how you first found that fault as a smoke test would not show it up? 🤔
Superb video lads, my kids call me redneck dad because of what they call my redneck engineering :-)
Where is located these pipes I have Volkswagen golf 2013. ? Thank you
Just done mine on my Touareg. Dpf light on, limp mode showing no codes. Easy fix delete your dpf and delete from ecu, better fuel economy no issues in the future
Great information mate..
SORTED 💣💣💣
Thanks mate
Very good tip Leon
I would like to see info (what car, age, engine, mileage) on the cars you work on in your videos, it gives an idea on when to expect something like that in this case
Thank you for the great videos
I mate you can get caught very easy with that Because then you would only look for problems with certain mileage and you might forget and miss problems it's best as to always check it regardless of the mileage
And also due to wildly different driving styles it wouldn't play out.
Here's a question lads.. I found a totally torn dpf pressure sensor hose (one at front of dpf not rear one).. Would this stop a static regeneration from taking place!? Ford s max with P246C P2463 and P2463-C codes.... Soot accumulation etc.. Limp mode. Can't Static regen. Presume it's this torn/useless hose?
Ones again Leon your are magic!!! ;-)
Lol thanks mate
Hello ! Can u tell me please where is located this hoses ?
thnx
I founD on diagnostic DPF TRAP Volvo v50 1.6D 2010 . I want check the pipe like video. Thank you
What are the name of the pipes should I need replace them? Rookie here.
Leon full video on this start to finish please. everyone stay in keep safe SORTED!!!!!!
Full videos coming very soon mate
bodgit and leggit garage cheers Leon can’t wait 👍
hello, i have strange problem wit my passat 1.6 77kw, TDI, nothing on diagnostic shows the problem, ther is no light for dpf, but he starts regeneration every 5 minutes. I changed pressure sensor ( which has only 1 line conected to dpf, and another just goes in nowere), but problem is still on. Injectors are ok, also turbo is ok.?? thanks!
Hello Sir…
Could a DPF (2017 Jag F-Pace Diesel 2.0 US Spec) leak exhaust into the cabin?
If the filter inside the DPF canister breaks apart, would it sound like set of Headers?
Can one buy the actual filter and replace it inside the canister, or must one buy a complete DPF whole?
My F-Pace had exhaust in the cabin. While driving somewhat hard, the quietness instantly changed to the sound of Headers. I looked at the DPF plumbing while the car was lifted and all the pipes are solid. So, I’m thinking that the the filter inside the DPF exploded.
Your thoughts, PLEASE.
Thank you. Mr DJ
I HAD to watch this purely because of the posters name!
Great video!!! But there is one thing I cannot understand - how come diagnostics didn't show some 'low pressure' error or similar? If you had to discover problem manually, what's the point of pricey diagnostics scanner an other software-hardware?
If you watch my other video on the hue will see exactly why they did not show low pressure
That's what's made this problem very difficult to find
Can you tell me the symptoms that made you check the pipes, i have had problems in the past with my mondeo 2ltr tdci that goes into limp mode under acceleration when the coil ligh flashes , could the problem be this ?, any advice would be great..
It was Limp home mode no tower I have done another video on this as well
Can I ask. I have seen your video on mondeo mk3 St the 2.2tdci with flashing glow pug light. I have the same problem but my car when starting from cold will run fine as long as I keep it running. Once turned of and on again it go's in to limp mode. Till next day.
Hi mate the 1st thing you need to do is check your live data check what your pump is producing If you don't have A good scantools with live data unfortunally you're not gonna be able to do this
Good job 👍
Thanks mate
Can you pls let me know where you shop is?
Where wouod I find the hose attached to dpf? We're there any lights ? Cheers and performance issues ?
Blimey I asked this question ? Dw I know where it is lol
