- Anime referencing Dragon Ball is nothing new however Mappa's new show Boukyaku Battery included quite a cool reference that has caught the attention of many fans, so join me to day as we break this clip down in todays video!

Extra Note - The key animator behind this scene, Shun Sawai going of credits is possibly from Doga Kobo or a freelancer. Of course animation is a team effort, and the majority of the names behind the rest of the visuals, colouring, compositing, background art etc were Mappa staff.

I wasn't expecting such accurate dragon ball art work coming from an anime that has nothing to do with super power shounen at all.

I enjoy a good Dragon Ball reference here and there, bur the animators at MAPPA did a excellent job making this one so accurate to OG designs.

Most people online were saying that it looked nothing like Dragon Ball, but the first thing I noticed was that it looked a lot like the original manga, even in the colors and shape of the hair.
I guess most people are only familiar with anime Boo saga material ownwards. That's a shame. I hope they find this guy and make him work at an actual Dragon Ball episode.

Cool reference. The "KURIRIN NO KOTO GAAAAA?" scene is really loved in Japan from my understanding (as it should lol, so awesome). It was really embarrassing seeing people not only not recognise it and call Goku Vegeta there
Hey, I totally do get it though.
I think it’s an understandable mistake specifically because his hair does resemble Vegeta’s plus the pants+lack of wristbands.
Check the manga panel and it’s like… yeah he retains the major elements of Goku’s design PLUS the end/edge of the hair is cut off so you’re not seeing the full hair. It’s framed in a way where the emphasis is taken away from the hair and your vision is kinda drawn downwards towards the center and you see the wristbands and belt front and center there.
I think the head alone could be mistaken for Vegeta even in the manga panel- but it makes sense because he’s so infuriated at this point that he’s lost a lot of elements that made him recognizable as Goku- the rounded eyes, the softer expressions, the iconic hair style- all of that has been erased to really hammer the point home that this isn’t the same Goku as before. He’s a super Saiyan now, but he also just had his dead best friend mocked by the guy who murdered him.
I think it’s a very powerful scene in the manga because of all of the changes. It reminds me of Gohan going SSJ2 for the first time and Cell just being like, “he’s changed” or “he’s different” just in reference to his energy and tone.

Its so nice to see others appreciating the first Super Saiyan appearance. They had it dialed in man, the huge hair, lighter yellow when not powering up, the bulky body... You could see he was different and way more powerful. I hated how they toned it all down with Super Saiyan 2, and even SS3 he's not as bulky as he was here with Frieza. I remember as a kid being hyped out of my mind over it all. The amazing thing is those classic scenes still hype me to this day. What an anime man. RIP Akira Toriyama :(
I like that they slimmed down. SS2 a more refined version of the transformation, whereas against Frieza it's his first time using Super Saiyan so of course it's going to be unrefined, bulky and all
he would be an awesome addition for any DBZ remakes...

That could’ve been a great way to differentiate between SS1 and SS2. The fluffy and thick SS1 hair with pale yellow and the spiky and thinner SS2 hair with darker yellow.

@@SavantPete Eh its just that we rarely see Goku's hair pushed completely up by his Ki like that. Its a 1:1 shot from the manga, which is why his hair did that, almost making him look like Vegeta.

Is it safe to say that this is something that Nakatsuro could've made? He's always been the best Toriyama emulator and this scene was pretty much 1:1 with the respective manga panels.
A parody with taste is something else.
Maybe, his work in the Namek arc was close to Toriyama's but never to this extent. Although his later work for the Slump manga and onwards in the 2000s is pretty much 1:1. Would be curious to see how he would tackle something like this today.
Masaki Sato was the best Toriyama emulator.
@@jasonone8726 Not according to Toriyama. Nakatsuro has always been his go to guy, to the point were he asked Nakatsuro to finish a drawing that Toriyama couldn't finish himself for the cover of a guide book.
The more I look at it, I think it's a mix of two. One being 'Ore wa okotta zo, Freeza!' and the mentioned 'Kuririn no koto ga!'
i agree parts did feel stiff, mostly when the camera turn. Obviously very subjective but I like the stiffness. Awesome break down as always as well great work :)

My favorite recent DB reference has to be Spy×Family's meme face princess, Anya Forger, powering up to her SSJ form to challenge the mid terms exams at her academy, and still flunking most of them....
The comedy aspect of the whole thing could have been penned by Akira himself.

Every time I watch anything that has to do with DBZ I become all sentimental & a tear is ready to drop from my eyes, I still can't believe that the legendary Akira Toriyama, the author of my favorite anime of all time is not with us anymore, this is really so sad for me, I don't believe I will ever stop feeling that way.

The first part of the MAPPA transformation seems to be referencing what id like to call the "CURSE YOU! NOW IM MAD! FRIIIIIEEEEEZAAAAAAAA!!!!" Idk what he actually says in that scene so im referring to the fighterZ dialogue.

theres a hokuto no ken reference on the recent anime called dragon raja on episode 1 on 8:20 it starts playing north star kenshiro theme and the guard + his friend do the jojo menacing structure. I know its not relevant to dragon ball but to a certain extent its VERY RARE.
Fun fact: In Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, Polnareff hits the same Goku pose when Avdol dies because the writer loved Toriyama’s art style

Dude… I have been having an identity crisis with my pens in clip studio paint. I was trying to get a good pen for animation but the pens I come up with are just garbage. I am almost at the point of giving up on drawing dbz. The lines look so smooth I hate it. Could you show what kind of setups or pens you use when drawing.
