Hope we help clear up the issues for these type of dell laptops. The diagnostic method should work with all Dell's with this type of bios, not just the XPS and Precision Models. What type of Dell laptop do you have? Let us know in the comments down below!
Precision 7730 ... recently acquired it, no voltage at battery terminals BUT opening up the battery the Li-Ion cells all measure okay, so the series 'switch' on the BMS is open ... came with wrong charger (only a 65W version, requires 240Watts) so have not tested it yet. The center insulator in the DC power jack moves, thinking that might be an issue when I get that far (after getting the right AC adapter).
Heyo, I wanted to comment another thank you (2 years after my precious comment!)! I just fixed my laptop again, and I really appreciate your help! Thanks again!
Great instructions! I just completed this repair, following you step by step, and my laptop is now properly charging. The DC jack cost $6.50 and a PC tool kit cost me $22, both from Amazon. It took about 30 mins to complete. Thank you so much! This probably saved me $200, not to mention the downtime. I took this to Geek Squad at Best Buy and they couldn't even repair in house. Said they would have to send it off and it would take about a month to get it back. Thank you very much!
We tried this with my wife's laptop and it was an easy and successful fix! We were all ready to scrap her current laptop and buy a new one, but with your well-made and easy to understand video we had the confidence to just fix it ourselves! It was an 8$ part, and everything is working well now. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the perfect answer to my Dell XPS 15 problem. The plastic surrounding the DC Jack broke at some point and the connection to the charger was loose when plugged-in, and when I went to plug it in recently, it shorted to the laptop case. A noise and puff of smoke and the LED on the charger winked out. Unplugged it and crossed my fingers it didn't cause a more serious problem with my laptop. Watched your video, then hopped on Amazon and bought the DC jack plus a replacement power supply. A few days later I installed the DC Jack, plugged in the new power supply and now it all works great! I definitely saved some money! Thanks again.
I have followed your video today and you don't even know how grateful I am 🎉 This seemed more complicated than it was in reality. Thanks again, you just saved me some money but more importantly, I learned something new. Great stuff!🙏
Thanks for posting this. Excellent and clear. Followed diagnostic guidance to confirm it wasn't the battery or charger. It cost me £4.69 for a replacement jack and now its all up and working. Never done this before, couldn't have done it without your video. Much appreciated.
Thank you thank you I followed this video to fix mine and it’s charging again this video was easy to follow for someone who’s never been inside their laptop before 10/10!!!!
Awesome fix-it solution to my son's laptop charging problem! Easy, simple and clear instructions helped make this an efficient and effective fix! Thanks!
Very good video! Thanks! The charging port was $6.00 online but I was able to get one at an electronics store so it cost a bit more! I’m not saying how much! I needed my laptop! One thing not mentioned is the two center screws under the XPS cover. I kept trying to pull the back off but it was still screwed in. Also, the replacement charging port had two sticky points where I had to pull off a protective tape first. Excellent video! Shop wanted over $200 & possibly a month to finish!
THANK YOU! I think I just successfully fixed my laptop! It was an inexpensive part on amazon and your well made, easy to follow, video gave me all the confidence I needed to fix it. I really appreciate your video and the clear explanation. Thanks again.
What helped me was to go to "add or remove programs", then search "dell power management" and click the 3 dots, then advanced options. From here look for "repair" button under Reset and click it. When done click the "reset" button. If you now restart laptop in BIOS mode it may say 130w.
I did exactly this repair on this model yesterday. I found that it wasn't necessary to disconnect the LCD cable or bracket, all I did was unscrew the hinges, open the laptop a little to lift the hinge up, close the laptop, unscrew the screw holding the jack then replace the jack.
Just did this repair, thanks for the video. Just a heads up, I did this repair and afterwards, when I plugged in the adapter, the front light came on briefly, then I pressed power and the power button LED just flashed slowly. I had to remove the battery and hold the power button for 20 secs. After that, it turned on (but complained about not being able to identify the power adapter, way too common with Dells).
Scratch that. It would start up with the battery disconnected, but if I reconnect the battery, it will not boot at all, just slow flashing power LED. Anyone seen this?
Do you have a similar repair for the Thunderbolt port? My port still works, though its unable to charge my laptop now. I've tried with several docks and a macbook charger with no luck.
Same here, one day stops loading through USB C. I think it is bios update, they break everything. Xps15 7590 was the baddest notebook ever. Now I have Ms surface and I love it.
I have an XPS 9575 and have the same problem with my USB C charging port. Is there any solution for this? It's driving me crazy. Tried cleaning the ports, different chargers. It's randomly done this before where hitting the power button gives a slight sound like it's trying to power on and a white light at the front of the trackpad briefly lights up and then a sound of it dying and nothing turns on. After some time it had worked with another charger, then sometimes with the same original Dell adapter but the connection was kinda fidgety and a little wiggling would bring back the white light and it would charge for some time. But now it's completely dead Is there any video dedicated out there to fixing the power USBC ports on Dell XPS laptop (specifically here, it's the XPS 9575
Hi, I have the same issue, I purchased the replacement part and installed it, power delivery over AC charger is working fine but the battery is not charging! I order another part this time from Amazon and it has the same issue! No battery charging! I Replaced the original charger with a brand new one and it’s the same. After searching I found that the bios restriction are disabling the new replacement part. Now I don’t know how to find the original part, do you have any idea where to get it? Thanks
Tried a port replacement, but now it wont charge says the AC power adaptor wattage and type cannot be determined the battery may not charge, could this be due to generic port?
Very nice instructions on how to troubleshoot and replace this part. The part is available on various websites relativelly cheap. Search for: Dell XPS 15 7590 DC Jack IN Cable Power Connector Port
Please my dell precision 5510 is not able to connect to my hotspot unless its very close to the source e.g. putting the phone with hotspot beside the laptop. Any recommendation for this issue?
An online search for the DC power jack cable replacement for Dell XPS 15 7590 yielded a variety of results with different manufacturers, part numbers, and prices. Can I purchase the part from you?
I'll have to try this. My battery is completely dead. I'm on to my third adapter and now the charging light on the laptop isn't we've coming on. More waiting.

Thank you SO much. I just did this part replacement. Super easy and only $6 from Amazon.
Your description fits my situation exactly. Thanks for explaining it so well.
Glad it was helpful!
Excellent video! I have this exact problem on my Dell XPS 15 7590. I am replacing the jack using your excellent instructions. Thank you!
Thanks followed your video and fixed my pc 😅
I’ve been having this same exact problem. I bought and replaced the jack but it didn’t help at all :/

I have the same problem but my laptop trickles off once the power adapter is disconnected.

If the black part inside of the jack is gone do I need to replace the jack port?

Quick, easy and well explained. Thanks man ✌️
Do the light turn off and on while charging?
Thank you so much!! I was able to fix it following your step by step!!

Either an AC Adatper or the charging circuit has an issue

Is it safe to use a generic brand dc jack? My laptop is dell precision and i am hesitant to buy one.
My laptop is not charging anymore after replacement the ac jack
Thx a lot sir, very helpful!!!

Hi
My Dell xps 14z battery not charging..its working only when plugged in ..when I connect the charger the LED blink for 3 sec and then off..
I'll have to try this. My battery is completely dead. I'm on to my third adapter and now the charging light on the laptop isn't we've coming on. More waiting.
I switched my charging port and my battery brother and now it is running like a charm, model dell xps 15 9550
Long story short I’ll never buy a dell again 😂
Bingo
Why?
Mine didn't work even after replacing the DC supply. It shows that its connected when charger plugged but battery not charging
