yea I am using the case from one of those to build an 1835....typically the biggest engine I would build in a 40 hp case is an 1800 74x88 thick wall. but that one had 8mm studs. so I went to 92 thick wall.
Mike im into any old 1200 40 HP. Got to pulling the rods out. #3 was installed with the bearing tangs up. The # on the rods & cap were down. The notch on the rods was ground off or non existent. The rods has been replaced years ago. The rods bolts in all 4 rods are all BOLTS. no nuts. Everything looked ok inside the motor. Thoughts? 1384 parts already in the shelf. I managed to get a set of silver line mains. Flip the #3 rod the way it should be and move on?
@@johnwerner7194 40 horsehead bolts not nuts. Flip the rod back over. Probably fine. New rod bearings. Make sure it has a minimum of 21 mm oil pump. I run 26. Probably will be fine.
I totally believe your correct. I've measured 25 different ways. There are no right side rods here. There are no left bank rods here. It was stamped on the same side as the rod bearing lock the other three rods stamped opposite the rod bering lock and they didn't know better. Tons of mis infromation out there. Including my local machine shops. Make for a simple great video. Thanks for what you do.
all about the $$$ you got...they are about 200 to 400 more bucks with all the same options. I know a lot of guys running AA with no issues.....and of course everyone with CB are non issues.
What engine size , would you build to drive across the country in a bus , to have least amount of break downs , I have heard that if you change the oil every 1500 miles in a bus , a 1776 or a 1800 will go reliably for 125000 miles , valve adjustments every 1500 miles as well .
you can do just about anything with one....stock carb to dual 40s. Or a 2 barrel. W 100 or w110. Web 86 or scat 25 with 1.25 ratio rockers. single port or dual port. anything you can do with a 1776 the 1904 does better.
Yea that one would be easy too. sometimes on mock up the 76 will hit....sometimes they dont. I have a buddy that did one with only like the 74 machining. went right together. Some guys say you need to have the case machined....some guys say you dont....Probably the mods would be easy if it did hit too.
--LOL I NEVER HAD THE MONEY --LOL --RIGHT ON !! LOL//Mike ? what and why is this accomplishment as I build anything must have pay back on gas //so I need only M.P.G. UNDER LIFE TODAY ..I have 1996 Merc Benz e class 300 diesel a 2000 Lincoln water injection // a 1960 Willys jeep I rebuilding and now I need M.P.G. TO KEEP MY PAYCHECK TODAY //so can you build engines for 50 M.P.G. AS where you live is $7.00 a gallon for gas ?????
For the Jeep AAZ or 1.9 diesel. Put some tall gears in that sucker. it will get up near that probably 40 mpg. My rabbit pickup gets 50......with the turbo 1.9. super fast too. I would like to put a 1.2l diesel 3 cylinder polo engine in a beetle but need some help on the software side. and hope it fits.
Hey Mike, I really enjoy your videos where you restore the bodies of the VW vans/buses, any of those projects coming in the future.
yea finishing up the oval and the rabbit then I will be starting on the 68 beetle.
Thanks for your help I enjoy and appreciate 😊
Good information thank you. When you say 40horse I'm thinking 1200 64mm crank

The only issue I see with stroking the motors is the tin fit; the motor gets wider. Some engine compartments are also restricted in terms of width.
74 with 5.325 has exactly the same width as a 1600. or 1776.
also 78 with b pistons and 5.325 rods. Is exactly stock width. Mine has No shims. no gaps in the tin and exactly the same width as a 1600.
So great to know!

12:02 For heads the quality there is a noticeable different in material and casting. CB are best, EMPI's okay, AA are meh, and scat were also meh...

It stinks about the bearings. What size valves, cam and carbs would go with on a 1904cc?

Put a 2.2 Subaru engine in
Any thoughts on a 76 88?
