Bought a 2016 premium last year for just over 30k, plan to keep it FOREVER. Great, dependable, off road capable (with lift, tires and some bumper trimming) rig.
True story: We have a 2017 with 55,000 miles. Runs so smooth and I drive the crap out of it. Some off road and lots of snow driving during ski season. We took it recently to Yosemite National Park and on day three we stopped to help a 2020 Q7 that was pulled over with its hazards on. They had a flat and didn’t realize it and drove however many miles till the tire completely collapsed. I said “where is your spare?” They don’t come with one bc of Audi trying to pad mpg. Wtf?! The driver didn’t know he had a low tire bc the tire pressure monitor system said it was fine. He admitted that the electrical system was horrible and he had it in the shop 4-5 times for electrical hiccups since he they bought it. Too much technology! I drove him back to where services were and he could call Audi. Lol! Love our GX! Bullet proof, reliable and high resale value. Those who know, know.
Mr. Redline, you sound like a perfect candidate for a Kia Telluride. The telematics look so “new” and it even has a heads up display. It gets good gas mileage for its class and it has really nice graphics. Since you value the technology above and beyond the actual reliability and capability of a truck, you should stick to 4 cylinder millennial wagons that will inevitably break down prematurely and lose half their value in the 1st 12 months.
I own a 2017, and absolutely love it. It rides better than most cars. Don't agree with his review. I would definitely recommend this vehicle, new or used. I get about 16.5 mpg on regular gas in houston. Who cares if it is old design, if it is a great suv. I would buy it again in a heart beat.
You complain that it’s an“old” style with old technology , but one might say why change something that still looks good and sells well. Lexus are known for their highly reliable cars. Why change what works well? Changing things doesn’t make it better. Lexus have worked out all the kinks in this model to be a very reliable, luxurious and high quality vehicle.
I agree with you that this this dude nitpicks brands like Lexus. Meanwhile, he kisses up to the Genesis brand. The fact that he praises Hyundai/Genesis and Kia despite those vehicles’ notorious engine problems and recalls; Kia just trended on Google for 410k recalls again. This guy is undoubtedly paid by those brands to shit on other legitimate vehicles like Lexus and Acura. One of the worst car reviewers on UA-cam.
I totally agree. Too much complaining and negativity. Lexus and Toyota has old school electronics and simplistic designs with no over the top bells and whistles ,However the most important factor is these vehicles have the most reliable drivetrain in its class and the entire Lexus/Toyota lineup.
They sell well despite being vehicular dinosaurs because quality, reliability and resale value are still very important to people spending this amount of money for a vehicle.
@@damiandmb2092 Exactly this! People who buy this, KNOW what they're getting into. But charging the same price as their competition with updated engines, technology, and style? Lexus would be competitive if they actually priced this lower. Then it makes sense, otherwise, Toyota is banking on reliability and slapping a price on it just because it's a ToYoTa
I would buy this new for the same reason I bought a 4Runner Pro in 2019. It’s the era that lasts forever. A 2021 will be running in 2041. It will have paid for itself at least three times. Knowing it’s a purchase that lasts is worth more than high tech screens that date themselves in months.
Definitely buy it used. Picked up a 2011 for $17k and looks the same inside as this 2021. Solid off-roader. I still smile seeing faces of Jeep and 4Runner drivers when I bring it on trail.
I wouldn’t pay a dime more than what this would cost in 2015. Can’t imagine paying more for something that hasn’t changed when used it’s a way better deal
I've watched dozens of GX videos, this one captures the v8 throttle response sound the best. with the interior 22/23 upgrade for this car, it's now the complete package to me personally.
Thanks Mr. Redline.. You do a great job with your reviews.. I love to watch and learn.. But I want to point out that things that you say are 'dated' or 'old'.. I don't mind things being old or dated if they work and function better (and are more reliably). I have noticed that a lot (and A LOT) of the so called 'new' or 'updated' things are actually worse than the 'dated' things they replaced. A lot of the "updated' things are worse, or are harder to use, or don't look as good - as the older thing it replaced. If its not * REALLY * better, don't mess with something that looks good and still works fine.
That would only matter if somebody planned to buy one of these new and keep it forever. Leasing this or buying with the intention of trading it in less than 10 years is a waste. These only make financial sense to buy as used hoopties to me.
In 2020, the Lexus GX sold 28,519 units in the North American Market, a 2,574 unit increase from 2019. Unit sales with this vehicle have been consistent and continue to meet target range in the luxury midsize SUV segment. Moral of the story...if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!! This car will continue to sell, regardless!
The rise in the sale numbers of the GX from 2019 to 2020 is due partly to the 2020 refresh/redesign of the front spindle grill and the new sexier key fob. To me these redesigns look a lot better than before. That is why I am reluctant to buy any GX’s older than 2020. And I predict 2022 model will see another increase in sale numbers because of the redesign of the infotainment center with Apple play and android auto(finally!!).
For those of you who say this car will last a long time and is reliable, I say “of course!” Toyota has had literally 20 years to work on and perfect this exact same design. After 20 years of perfecting the same design, I’d expect it to be highly reliable. The tech in this car is also so old, no one will use it. Hence no problems.
Everybody call suv=trucks but, this Lexus gx460 is literally a truck and that’s the reason people buy it. and If you live in a crappie streets town with bumpy roads and potholes you love driving around it feel strong. can’t wait to have the 2020.
I dont get why toyota puts that same old GPS system in everything they make and never updates it years after a sale. Starting to weigh on me for future purchases
I think also from a manufacturers point of view, that Toyota has to prioritize which specific product line they should update. I think they prioritize the products that sell the best and those are the ones that usually get updated first. The ones that do not get updated quickly are probably the ones that do not make up a large part of their annual sales.
The same map from 2003. Very disappointing. Lexus/Toyota were the last automakers to offer AC/AA, so it does not surprise me. Very, very lazy on the tech front, even on the flagship LS.
@@duchoang7856 and people will continue to buy lol... hence if it ain't broke don't fix it, but for real the infotainment really needs an update. In general toyota and lexus are not really the best for interior but for their engines I will say 10/10 for most people.
Its categorized as having th4 best resale value in its class for years now. People are not buying this for th4 infotainment or technology but its durability. I dont buy luxury but if I did buy it , it have to be this one. Only because i know how easy it will be to sell it in the future at a good value.

@@vadim9342 It's NOT a techno wizardry by any means: the nav system lags a lot. However, the car had ZERO issues since my first one in 2015. I got the second one in 2018 and same, no issues. On my third lease, only thing is that the leather seats are only offered in the top trim.
I’m on my 3rd. Only sold the 2nd one because boys were hitting knees in car seats. They are out of car seats and we are back in a GX.. my wife randomly asked .. “does this have 4WD..can we take it to the mountains?” That & so much more.
Lexus when soccer moms walk into the dealer to buy this new: "Congratulations you played yourself". i do like this truck because of its offroad underpinnings and based on the LC Prado but wayy better off buying a used one.
This is the type of shit that Lexus did that killed off the beloved GS. They did not upgrade it to keep up with the competition and just straight disrespected it. Selling a vehicle solely on reliability is just dumb and basically a bull shit way to justify stagnation. What gets me with Lexus fans is that they push that agenda and biased mindset so much to the point of saying why fix it if it ain't broke? Well they are charging MORE money for the same shit from a decade ago. Like let's be real. They could've and should have at LEAST put apple car play and Android auto in the GX, the GS, etc. They could've at least fix the info tech in the GS and other models. The LS is failing miserably as it should. The IS is the same car from 2014 ALREADY refreshed back in like 2016-2017. The GS is gone. I really hope Genesis just comes in a kicks Lexus teeth in with their new line up, because Lexus has lost its way and got way too comfortable. This is coming from a Lexus LS owner too.
@@naveenthemachine problem is that they gotta get their Brand name and stature established first. They have the line up that is all beautiful, luxurious and competitive in everything and price. They just gotta get their dealership networks down. They are doing exactly what Lexus did when they started. Just gotta get that customer base down. Because as you see, Lexus fan base is loyal as hell, RELIABILITY is all they need to see to stay forever. To take that base away from Lexus, they would have to show that they are just as reliable and have the dealership and service experience to be top notch like them. That will be tough. Time will tell. I'm on board with Genesis and will take any car in their line up over Lexus, Acura etc.
People just don't understand the GX. It's not meant to be a road queen. Bought one, lifted it and added Method wheels with 34" tires... She's a BEAST on the trails and way more comfortable than a 4runner
I had a GX 460 but traded for a 19 LX for more space/room. The GX is very small inside for a big person such as myself. The LX is better, but still a little tight on space. If you don't mind the price for the vehicles, I can honestly say there are no better vehicle money can buy.
That suspension toggle switch is very functional. On comfort, it rides buttery smooth and soft like riding on clouds. Sport is very bumpy. I know, cause I own a 2011 premium.
@@paxhumana2015 Something's off when the 4Runner and even its direct counterpart, the LC Prado, have better interior tech. And this is a 70K luxury vehicle.
I'm sure this thing will last forever, but reliability only gets you so far in justifying that price of $70k, which is utterly absurd for such an outdated vehicle. They need to fully redesign this thing and bring it into the 21st century if they expect people to pay anywhere near that price.
Why are you so Negative I am retired from the Automotive industry. 33 years. Just so you know. Out of all the Manufacturers today. Lexus is #2 Manufacturers. Meaning Porsche is #1. In Customer Retention And Customer Satisfaction Period. No one else can stack up to Lexus. That are the Facts period
I owned one for 4 years. The biggest gripes: the HVAC controls and fan speed are buried in the touch screen. So, for example, to turn the fan speed up or down a single notch, you have to wade through the touch screent. Terrible design / frustrating. Next, the SUV dives horribly when you brake hard. It's disconcerting everytime it happens, even though you are aware of it (a body on frame I suppose). Next, gas mileage is bad. Side swing back door isn't great. Fairly boring to drive and lumbering. No heated stearing wheel. Front end side profile is awkward lookding. Infotainment is lame. Other than that, it's a super vehicle and bullet proof. If you want an off-road capable SUV that you could keep 10-20 years with next to no issues likely appearing, this would do the trick.
The weirdest thing about the GX for me is that the Prado's interior was refreshed a few years ago and is now much more up to date but for some reason they still haven't updated the GX. They've updated the exterior multiple times but the interior is still pretty much the same as it was back in 2010. Also the lack of Apple Carplay and Android Auto is totally inexcusable in 2021 and a total dealbreaker for me.
New for 2010(as well as the 4Runner), Lexus is lucky their lease deals on these are hard to pass up. Can get this leased for roughly the cost of the other lease queen, the Lexus RX. I do love that it still offers a NA V8(albeit down on power and super thirsty), and is mostly unstoppable off-pavement and super-reliable(with components that are 10-20years old, it should be) . I love how everybody gives the JGC and Durango crap for being so old, yet Lexus demands serious coin for even older vehicles with significantly less tech.
I say why fix something that isn’t broken. People in US buy trucks (body on frame) and Toyota delivers. I was a big fan of modern vehicles (new German SUV’s) in my 20’s and would not even notice Toyota/Lexus on the streets. To me, it was ‘an old person brand’. Now in my 30’ - I believe Toyota/Lexus is the best brand you can buy. Started to much more appreciate reliability and safety over tech stuff (even though I like tech myself). I think a key to your review was your statement of Old and I believe. Vehicles have function, and the fact that it has been around for a long time is a positive. You seem fixated on the words old and dated. The GX has a function, and appeals to a specific group of buyers. When I drive I need to pay attention so the infotainment system is minor, as is the size of the head units on the back of the front seats. This vehicle is a reliable tank, a SUV that you can depend on to get you to and fro, as is the case with so many in this class. I like body on frame and don’t know why you speak as though it is of little use. I guess I need to realize your reviews are based on your likes and taste, and takes away from the review.
I don't know why but watching this guy gives me the feeling that he loves his German luxury SUVs. I mean while almost every reviewers have nothing but praise about this particular vehicle, this guy managed to insert something negative in every sentence. He's like "this GX can swim in the ocean but I'm afraid it cannot fly!" kind of reviewer. Whether that's a good thing or not, 🤷♂️
It's .... boring and reliable Landrover has attempted better If only they were as reliable as the Lexus My Uncle has a 1998 LX 460 and it's virtually nad mechanically brand new He hasn't bought a new car for 3 decades
Oddly I was at a Lexus dealer last week looking at a used VW Atlas. The salesman kept putting down the technology of the Japanese cars and kept praising the German cars.
Of course he did…higher margin on that German crap and the service center loves seeing those pieces of shit roll in every few months again and again. Gifts that keep on giving, but hey they’ve got that great high definition touch screen that is up to date (don’t get too comfortable, cause it won’t be for long!!!) with all the notifications that tell you which way the wind is blowing against your tpms sensors.
The reliability thing is getting old. This is a decade old platform with old technology for 70k yes we all know it will outlast all of us but for that price and that horrible gas mileage is unacceptable in 2021
i have a 2005 GX in my garage. engine is still good, just saving it for my kid. i wouldn't spend the money on new one. $70k is too steep plus i don't need a sport package. and apple carplay isn't even an option? back in the day i don't think lexus offered anything but leather seats with navigation as standard. today, the bare bones minimum of this luxury brand gets you not much at all. i just paid $40k for a top of the line outback. not the same cache, or engine but i have everything i could ask for with every nicety and safety feature known - and even those unknown, to man.
If Acura did this ppl would be bashing it but since it’s a Lexus it’s “old reliable”. I swear I can’t take ppl seriously. Even Toyota is getting more features and better Powe trains. If this was Acura/Honda, the bashing. Y’all biased as hell lol
Its not just Honda and Acura if this was any other brand it would be heavily criticized for being behind the competition there’s definitely a double standard with Toyota and Lexus products
You know Toyota is really into reliability when even the base 1.8L engine in the Corolla has been used since 1998 but has had some changes over the years.
I've met several senior citizens couples while working down here in Florida they have a GX because they're safe. They've known folks and their retirement communities that haven't come out of an SUV crash. One older gentleman explain how his was rolled over several times and nobody had serious injuries. He sold on the idea of owning a tank and doesn't care about price or fuel mileage.

@@andrewmeehan6151 We’re not saying it’s bad, but for 2021 this is really an embarrassment for someone to spend this much money for something that hasn’t been redesigned for over a decade. Like at the minimum they should have added a new infotainment like they did on the new 4runners... like c’mon. The reliability argument can only go so far for something this old. Cmon Lexus get your ish together...
"Old designs" especially on Toyotas, is not necessarily a bad thing. They are tried and true, especially with vehicles with frames like 4runner, GX, Land Cruiser, Tundra. Reliability, resale, and demand are still there and that's what some consumers still want. Nissan is still using a 15 year old design on the Frontier and they still sell out on the lots.
Another thing to think about is the young people buried in student loans and high rent appreciate vehicles that are dependable and don’t need lots of maintenance/surprising owners with expensive repairs. Granted this isn’t a car that most 25 year olds can afford, but used would be a different story.
It is a bad thing when this SUV is so outdated that a 7 year old 2014 model is essentially the same exact thing but with a older grill. If they want to sell the a 7 year old SUV and call it a 2021, fine but it has to cost 35k. You can buy a a used one with miles between 20k-30k for around 30 grand and since this car is so outdated its the same as the 2021 model and you saved more than half the price, why buy new? @@paladin3116 they don’t “have” to sell it at anything. They will sell it at whatever people will pay, and clearly that works for them. Smart people buy products that last and don’t flush money down the toilet with money pits ex. GM, Audi, BMW. I’d drive a frontier any day of the week.
The Nissan frontier doesn’t sell out it needs lots of incentives to sell them. Frontier sales have fallen over the years they lost a lot of customers because of the Tacoma

You really have to drive one of these to understand the appeal. While it doesn’t have CarPlay, we don’t really care about it. GX has always been somewhat of a dream car and the pricing is good when compared to a 2021 Limited 4Runner. If you have to have the facelift go for a 2020 which has already been through the initial depreciation. Otherwise the 2014-2019 is a good buy. Even 2017’s and 2018’s are the best when looking for low mileage examples for a good price.
@@SugarPlumFairy29 we ended picking up a 2021 fresh off the boat around a year ago, ended up being thousands cheaper than a CPO car. Will probably trade it in whenever the GX gets a full design. Would consider the upcoming Sequoia if it wouldn’t be such a tight fit in the garage.

Damn this boy didn’t do research before putting out this video. Shame! The redesign was in 2020 not 2021 and those are the 19” wheels included with sport design package not 18” and those triple beam led lights are standard across all trim levels not optional and the steering wheel is also new borrowed from the RX. The reason why the HP is tune to 301 is because it’s heavy and can tow 6500 lbs. obviously it can do more but since your not an engineer I don’t expect you to understand. Don’t be confused. Just think longevity and not over stressing the power train. People buy these because it’s one of the last vehicles that doesn’t force you into modern tech trash. I’ll take the V8 in the GX over Apple car play in the 4Runner any day kid. Look at the age group that buy these they barley know how to use a smartphone why would they care for Apple car play? And last people that can afford these don’t sweat over gas prices. Like me....Lol. Lexus don’t ever give this kid a car to review.
For all of you complaining that no one will buy this, we took 1, then we took 2. Yup, some people are in fact buying these. Here in Canada the nicer dealerships couldn't get 1 a month if they wanted to. Hey, let's see who is laughing about ancient V8s and 6 speed in 10 years when your Ranger Rover is rotting in an automotive graveyard.
This car isn’t made for an enthusiast, it is made for someone who values function over form. I’ll agree the infotainment is oldish, but it wouldn’t be a dealbreaker for me because you could literally save tens of thousands not needing a new car for like 15-20 years.
People who buy a Lexus at this price will probably lease and the GV80 would be a better lease if reliability is such a concern. Also, $70k & a $20k Corolla has better tech and is still reliable. I don’t know how people let Lexus get away with this garbage lol
Because this one don't sell more then Corolla, Toyota and Lexus usually update cars the sell more, like Camry, es, rav4, highland , RX. Those are their top selling. That why they focus on them more
I really wanted an LR4, but in the current market, a 2016 with 50k miles is the same price as a 2019 GX 460 with 30K miles. The GX is a Japanese built Land Rover with impeccable reliability and outstanding off road chops. I completely agree that it doesn't really make a lot of sense to buy a new one, since for better or worse, the GX evolved at a Darwinian pace. I have a 2019 and while I miss CarPlay, the Bluetooth Integration, at least with an iPhone, is pretty easy to live with. For instance, I can have Siri play music, text of make phone calls, navigate, and pretty much anything else that I would otherwise with CarPlay, without taking my hands off of the wheel. I can't see navigation output on the screen, but phone calls, podcasts, and music are there, with touch controls. There is a third party solution to add Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to the display, hiding the backend bits in the console. And as far as the rear door, it's a lot quicker and easier access than dealing with a hatch. What you give up in rain protection, you get back in convenience, speed of access, and having a portal for long objects.

The rise in the sale numbers of the GX from 2019 to 2020 is due partly to the 2020 refresh/redesign of the front spindle grill and the new sexier key fob.

Lexus has managed to make a base Dodge Durango look infinitely more desirable. And short of off road, The GV80 is like 1000% better. Why would anybody even consider buying this decades old throwback.
Bernie Sanders 😂😂😂 I laughed so hard, wasn’t expecting that
You really have to drive one of these to understand the appeal.
Depreciation, reliability, off-road capability, and truck-like feel is why we’re not considering the competitors out of Europe.
We ended up getting a 2018 lease return with low miles for a more reasonable price. Love driving it!
@@amanwithaplan4103 That's what we were talking about, too. Love the GX, even with the poor gas mileage (which may get better in the future, but my husband reminds me we'll lose that truck-like V8).
I’ll come back for the comments lol 🍿
He gets 14mpg while driving it like a race car while my 2011 gx gets 26.5mpg driving 60mph on the highway.😁
Honestly I love the GX, one of the few SUVs that to me has always been just perfect. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
@Anna Carson well sure the infotainment needs a major update but as for reliability that thing will last longer than most marriages lol
You’re one of the few people who call a traditional SUV a “SUV” and not a “truck”
I have a 2012 and love it i like the look of my year not so city driver look it has a better approach angle from front In my opinion
The Landcruiser Prado sells like hotcakes here in Australia. Have 0 clue why Lexus doesn't sell the GX series here.
This will make a great used vehicle
👏👏👏
@Luxurygame 006 wait. What name calling? I’ve never seen this reviewer he must have just got out of high school. What name did I call him?
“It feels like the transmission is filled with Mayonnaise” that made me laugh
Well it definitely looks like it was made 15-20 years ago.
@@mxyfn I don’t care haha, it looks good to me and lasts without costing a fortune to fix/maintain.
Great years for Lexus R&D team for past 10 years or so since they still got paid even though they hardly released anything lol
Personally, I love it! It's expensive af, but Lexus kills it with their design and materials + ultimate reliability of Toyota/Lexus.
A true off-road tank!
Had to get in on the Bernie meme. Lol Made watching the dinosaur of a Lexus SUV worth it!
That why they focus on them more
Some Toyota /Lexus fans will defend Toyota/Lexus no matter what, reliability doesn’t mean that you can just keep the old interior forever.
@@kromahj bet they could sell more if it was updated.
@@djncrti2860 maybe
Its the best off roader in its prado form
This doesn’t even compete with the GV80 and yet you still managed to bring Genesis up in this review... just like every other one
Bruh, my Mom’s 2014 Chevy Traverse has more space behind the third row than that...
but yo momma's traverse prolly been in the shop more than u can count
@@TNAWWE 😂
@@TNAWWE actually no, it’s been really reliable! It’s at 120,000 miles tho... I’m expecting the transmission to go out soon and we have you get her shocks done
@@jacobsteele9927 yeah im just joking man. i used to be a chevy guy but all i drive are Toyotas now. i have a 2019 Tacoma. My mom had a 2011 Chevy Equinox back in the day, and it was a pretty nice ride
@@TNAWWE Yeah, I prefer Toyotas, Fords, and Subarus myself lol! My mom is probably going to switch to and Explorer next because she likes supporting American brands. She wants to switch to Ford because from my research we found that the new Traverse’s transmission, electrical system, and emissions systems are all unreliable and we are kinda done with our kinda bad experience with OnStar
Sounds to me like reviewer would be happier with a Kia or Hyundai or something latest and greatest throw away in ten or fifteen years suv.
People buy these not for the latest tech but the fact it’s an ultra reliable suv that will still be getting groceries or going to the beach or off-roading while most of the completion of same age is at salvage yard waiting for the crusher.
Is it a pig on gas ? Yes
Is it’s tech “outdated” ? yes but does all I need it to do.
Reliable? Yes
Wonderful driving/riding experience? Yes
Minimal repair/ maintenance costs ? Yes
Checks all the boxes for me and everyone that buys a GX460.
Only disadvantage about this engine is the starter sits under the intake manifold and the brake master cylinder cost $1700 just by itself
Toyota/Lexus take the winemaker’s approach to manufacturing.
The amount of incredibly cheap plastic, and where it's located, is an insult.
I would have never guessed a car like this would still have a V8 today, but it's still nice to see. Still my 2020 Ram 1500 Classic with the 8 spd and 5.7 gets about 16 mpg around town on midgrade fuel with the MDS off.
I love that Lexus. I don't care what anybody says. My only complaint is the infotainment.
C'mon Lexus it's 2021! This should have been redesigned years ago.
Just traded a 2021 Toyota 4 runner limited in for the Gx 460 this gx 460 is a amazing road car very smooth on bad roads smooth quit engine v8 burble . I looked at a lot of newer vehicles but all where 6 cylinder I was sold on the v8 in the Lexus mileage is no different than the 4 runner as for out dated I don’t use car play because I don’t like my phone connected to my car stereo I like to listen to music not talk so no big deal to me if you want to play you music use Blue tooth and you have basically the same car play I also like a body on frame instead of a unibody for better vision plus it feels like your driving a much heavier vehicle another reason over the bmw or Land Rover products with I drove for 15 plus years is I can tell you is the Lexus will never see the service center for a thing except oil services so as I say gas is cheaper than service bills at these previous owned euro vehicles I guarantee i will never spend 8,500 to service a Lexus or stop and spend that on fuel .
The title sounds like something Scotty Kilmer would say
$2000 for those screens? That’s insane just buy a couple IPads with that $2000
