The Ferrari 330 P4 is One Sexy Beast

  • As much as any other car, the Ferrari 330 P4 is the embodiment and culmination of an entire era of racing. With its low-slung stance and voluptuous lines, it is also among the most visually stunning cars ever produced. Combine these factors and the word "icon" slips to the tip of one's tongue.
Still smarting from losing the Constructor's International Sports Prototype Championship to Ford in 1965 and 1966 -- and, in 1966, watching a trio of Ford GT40s finish 1-2-3 at Le Mans -- Enzo Ferrari turned to his chief engineer, Mauro Forghieri, with a simple instruction: win. In world then dominated by Carroll Shelby and Ford's formidable 7-liter engines, this would be no easy undertaking.
What resulted from Forghieri's mandate was the 330 P4, arguably the greatest Ferrari endurance race car of all time. Based on the 330 P3 -- and almost identical cosmetically -- the 330 P4 represented a significant mechanical upgrade from anything Ferrari had run previously and, in 1967, it would return Ferrari to the pinnacle of sports prototype racing.
The highlight of the 1967 season came at the 24 Hours of Daytona, a race that would come to be known as The Revenge of Il Commendatore. Led by Chris Amon and Lorenzo Bandini in a 330 P4 (and trailed by Mike Parkes and Ludovico Scarfiotti in another 330 P4), Ferrari finished 1-2-3 at the hallowed Florida circuit. Soon thereafter, a pair of P4s finished 1-2 at Monza, and while Ford again won at Le Mans, P4s finished second and third and Ferrari was once again in possession of the sports prototype title.
Rules changes concerning engine displacement spelled the end of the 330 P4s in European racing, but by that time, the car had cemented its place in the pantheon of endurance racing.

If they love to talk on and on about the car, then they own it (for what I feel is) the right reason. These folks with these type of cars have no problem with talking about their cars. Kinda the same thing with doctors. Don't ever feel stupid asking them questions. They looove to share how much they know.

I skipped school to watch this very car practice for the 1967 24 hrs of Daytona. Our high school was about 2/3 mile from the track. When it was coming out of the East turn onto the front tri-oval all you could hear was valve lifter clatter and the air being pushed out of the way. But when it went by the East stands it was deafening, with a huge Doppler pitch change as it raced away from us. The car was running about 195 mph on the banks.
I was so excited by the 1-2-3 win by Ferrari that I wrote Enzo a letter. About 4 or 5 months later I got a card signed by him saying “Many thanks” in Italian. After watching about 12 hours of racing I went home that night, crawled into bed, and listened to those Ferraris climb up out of the infield onto the West turn bank and then run up through the gears down the back straightaway. Our home was three miles East of the track so that West turn was like a huge reflector to the East.

Great story. Nothing sounds as great as a Ferrari. I have one, and it does not have a sound system. I always believed in the Enzo philosophy: Why would you want to listen to a stereo when there is wonderful music right behind your head? And he was right.

That's cool. So you live in Italy now right? How an American boy could NOT root for their own Country's car is beyond my comprehension. I know I was ecstatic when Ford went prototype racing in 1964. One of the reasons I'm still a Ford fan today. Besides their domination of Indy, Stock Cars and F-1. Right! I first saw poor Banders at
      Sebring, 1964.
If memory serves he co-drove the winning
      SEFAC 275P with Mike Parkes,
after Sir John desyroed the RR lower A arm
on his 330P from dropping a wheel of into
the sand, on exiting the Webster Turns...
Sparks flying.. observed closely with my
      WWII Navy armored B&L 7x50s....
I got to know the elder SEFAC mechanic
from my observations... and Sir John came
over and rather sheepishly thanked me for
my report.... he ended up 3rd....
      After replacing the arm....
ANYWAY, if Enzo had allowed racing the
246 Dino F-1 car at Monza, Banders may
      well have WON!
Might be still with us today....
And YES Surtees might have won another
WC for Ferrari and maybe another Le Mans
      We will never know...

      Mr18000rpm
When someone pointed out that there COULD have been more downforce,
the reply ( by the body builder),was that YES, there could have been....
But it would have spoiled the LOOKS!
No one ever complained about their stability at 198 mph.
205 mph, when drafting the big Fords!
Even through The Kink in The Mulsanne
      Coupe or Spyder.
That begat the Ginther Lip on the 176 mph GTOs....
240 pounds of LIFT, became a slight down force...
The beginnings of a new world of aero packages..
The 330P3s had the first small Diaplanes, on the front fenders.
Roll hoop inverted airfoils had been tried on the Spyders, from the '62 Dinos...
Most prominent on the '65 P2s..
      The press never caught on...
I first felt them on Graham Hill's private entered 330P at Sebring.
Flat on top.. curved on the bottom... a wing!
Hill saw me testing that out, put his finger to his lips and winked.
I shook my head emphatically... Mums the word!
I scurried away before a pit official saw me there.
Jim Hall was only a couple pits away..
This was 1965.... or maybe '64....
I was only 15, but the Ferrari mechanics SAW how much I loved their cars.
Particularly the oldest, most irrasciable of them....
Who, in later years, would talk to me in good enough American...
I used to pay close attention to things like rear suspensions
with 8x30 binoculars in places like the Esses... and the sweeper after them
Ferrari, ALFA, Lola, as the rear of the prototypes were opened up to observation.
Jo Bonnier was kind enough to thank me for them, in 72...
His Lola was the most STABLE, under bump steer.
I had read my suspension book by Frank Costin.....
By which time I was an unknown journalist, of a sorts.....
Then Jo was dead a few months later... at The Hunederres...
      Helicoptered into the trees..
Hill had to go looking for his friend..
      Ghastly business.
Took the joy out of his win...
      Racing.....
Like Lucian Bianchi, and Piers Courage, who I had also spoken with...
When they were ALFA drivers, there.....
Next to my heart with Ferrari.
I've SEEN Ferrari mechanics helping ALFA mechanics, late at night,
before the race, and vice versa... working on a transaxle....
They WANTED each other there for the race!
KNEW how important BOTH were to the crowd and the sport.
True Italians with big hearts! I forget the Latin word for it...
MUCH like the Brits F-1 teams, in that...
      Indy teams TOO!
Helping each other out so they could RACE!
Win on the track, not by circumstances in the pits
      or with shipping from home!
Lola and Mirage were not enough!
Porsche was not there, that year...
      Your competitor was your FRIEND!
      Made it all worthwhile...
You can bet Corvette LIKES Viper being there.
      Competitors, YES!
      But Americans!
      The Sport...

The 330 P4 was a four liter engined car. Ferrari race engines used the displacement of a single cylinder as its numeration. Hence, 330cc per cylinder. Multiply by 12=3,960 cc or almost exactly 4 liters. The 250 LM which won LeMans in 1965 was a three liter car. 250cc x 12=3,000 cc.

There is a large portion of the population that regards an automobile as a "transportation appliance." It ranks right up there with a good refrigerator or a dishwasher. Many of them drive the most bland creations in the marketplace and are quite pleased with their choices because they get 30+ mpg and they can drive in the commuter lane all by themselves. Michael Meliambro the cars shipped to America were specifically made to take on the GT40s AND race and at Daytona. What i think is impressive is that a 4 liter performed better than a 7 liter in an endurance race. 4 cars were sent and 4 (1 of which was an half assed upgrade of the old car due to money costraints) finished the raced taking all the top spots.
The Mk. IV won again at Le Mans because they were upgraded again, while Ferrari didn’t. A small company that was on the brink of going under just a few years prior couldn’t afford to keep up with Ford and he knew that.

They no only lost their roots, they lost their soul their idea of how a car should be!
With overregulation of this god forsaken world there came simmilar car designs, exhaust emmisions and their regulation have put the N/A engine into ground (for the most part -> Mazda skyactive)!
All the new technology has led to cars who are not allowed to have issues!
And if you ever loved a woman the way she deserved it you will know you start to love everything you don´t like about her, her mistakes!
This is what makes these "old" cars so beautiful, not one part on them was the same every inch was different on every single one, most of them hand built, not the today´s bentley "hand-built" which is kinda "we mad the stiching on our own!" badge^^!
Long story short, if a car has history, soul, doesn´t look like anything else and you don´t think you´re flying the enterprise when you drive it, it is something special ;-),today.... :-(

The Description writes in glowing terms about the success of the P4, but Porsche with its underpowered 2 liter engine 910; and 2.2 liter 907, gave Ferrari a run for its money in the 1967 endurance racing season; where the manufacturer's title wasn't decided until the final race of the season, the BOAC 500 at Brands Hatch, which saw Ferrari prevailing.

Enzo gave a one of number plate (#900) for David Piper's 330P4

Not even NART could have done that

ONLY F.I. engine released out of Maranello
330P3's and 412Ps were Weber carb engines.
Ferrari F.I. was new, fresh from F-1..
    F-1 had gone F.I. over 1952 -1963...
Coventry Climax and BRM 1.5 liter V-8s..

    312PB's....
2nd and 3rd OA behind the new Matra 630....
    Enzo stayed out in 1972....
FIAT then withdrew further funding for endurance sports cars
Ferrari was to concentrate on F-1 from then on.
Ferraris HAVE won the GT classes
With the 365GTB/4 Daytona thru 1979
And the various 8 cyl. cars for the 2000s<
That said, Ferrari won Le Mans NINE TIMES!
    1949 - 1965

You definitely qualify as one of those. Tell me, how can one exist knowing not everybody agrees with you 100% of the time??
I'm also fairly certain you don't know much about Ferrari in general and cars in particular and derive all your subjective opinions from games and word of mouth. Be honest now, have you heard of this racing car prior to seeing this video? I bet not.

I'm not in a position to own a Ferrari, but how can you be so sure that I've not driven one or I don't know anything about a Ferrari? Just because you disliked this video (guessed it, because you so vehemently defended the people who disliked the car), doesn't make you an expert on Ferrari 's either, does it? 😉 Oh and I have not only heard of this car before but also had seen a documentary on it. Time and place are so important to our destiny. How many people can say they had that particular experience. You are so fortunate. I was 17 in 1967 and living in North Hollywood California. My Brothers and I loved Ferraris and we occasionally saw various movie stars driving them on the street but be weren’t able to see them race until the CanAm series at Riverside California. Not the prettiest setting for a track but one year Ferrari had two cars entered driven by Chris Amon and Jonathan Williams. Seeing those cars changed the trajectory of my life. Isn’t life wonderful.
