R.I.P Alain de Cadenet. We will miss you dearly. Quite a gentleman...
He was active till the very end.
Sorry to hear of his passing.... he was great, loved his voice
... 🙏🏻
RIP
Well thanks for letting me know. Didn't know he'd passed till now.
Whoever reading this one day you will own a FERRARI........
40 years as a Ferrari mechanic and hands down the 288 is my favorite car for the street. The 288 is so much fun, very forgiving and easy to drive. Having thousands of mile of seat time in 288's is one of my fondest memories, the only complain would be that the seat gets uncomfortable after a couple hours. Love these cars so much, seeing one brings back so many good times...
I can only imagine, damn what a blast to drive, light and plenty of power.
Harry Metcalfe recently had a go at a 288 GTO as well and deeply regreted not buying one back when he had the chance in the 2003-2005 era.
He bought a Zonda instead and got to be on Horacios inner circle list, but today he regrets not owning a 288 GTO and cannot afford one today.
Alain is a great presenter and the 288 GTO is a magical machine. I never thought I'd see someone flogging a GTO on damp roads in the fog. I'll bet when the drone operator saw that last shot, a tear came to his eye. Such a wonderful video in every way.
The sound of the engine in that shot as well and the way they stopped it with the echo was a nice touch.
RamblinAround, beautifully put! I wanted to say say something similar, especially the tear in the eye!
@@zacanderson8282 awesome
Flogging ???? Are you serious ? You could never aggressively drive that car in those conditions, he is babying that car..
I can
OMG that ending mountain drone fly over was beautiful
It was stunning.
I certainly is although, it would certainly worry me to drive a car like that in those conditions 🤔🤔
Darren Tadman no ASR on a 288 GTO :)
@@TimsEnthusiastGarage hmmm, plenty of opportunities to hit ice on those roads, or collect another vehicle that's done the same 😕😕
I was just thinking Alain would have enjoyed a much more "stimulating" drive a few months later in the year. He has always been one of my favorite 2 or 3 narrators of automotive history. Weather or not, this was an excellent view of a spectacular car.
Most beautiful Ferrari ever!
Rick Hunter go back to school clown
In my opinion as well!
Along with the 250 GTO it is also my favorite body style.
250 SWB
Most beautiful Ferrari for road. 330 P4 is the most beautiful ever.
The 288 always struck me as the best looking Ferrari from my childhood. Its wider and not as blocky as the 308, but still a bit chunkier than the F40. Just the right amount of 1980's DNA in it!
True, it's quite beautiful.
A beautiful Italian woman in a red dress and high heels. Timeless.
With thick shapely athletic calves & thighs, so she can run like the wind!
Joel Williams - Someone has to chase to cows back to the barn and get the milking done.
@@wallymcguire2033 "Calves" as in her lower legs, not baby cows.
A noble effort, though! lol
Joel Williams - Yes I know the difference between a calf and a calve. It appears my joke went over your head. No worries thought mate. ✌️
@@wallymcguire2033 D'ya like dags??
Whoever's in charge of Petrolicious' music score deserves a peace Nobel prize
Okay lol
Nobel Peace Prize
Why would it be the Nobel Peace Prize and not the Nobel Music Prize?
Armchair Racer Because the wrong music would make this a war zone.
@@TomVestvik you said it👏👏
Just found out about Alain's passing. R.I.P. Like many others, I enjoyed your skill and smooth delivery on car reviews. I much enjoyed your Victory by Design series. You are greatly missed.
One of the most beautiful Ferrari ever made, lovely
That closing shot, pure beauty.
That shot with the camera mounted on the engine cover looking forward through the back glass is epic.
I agree, it's so 1970 - 80 james bond flashback like.
VICTORY BY DESIGN!!!
I loved the simplicity of that series; informative chat about the history of the marque, followed by a sequence of the cars being driven hard, with no music overlay - just the raw engine noise. Beautiful.
I have the whole dvd series. GREAT show!
I see I'm not the only one with a flashback.
Hell yes! That's one of my all time favorite series!
Thank you for that was trying to figure out what it was called couldn't remember
Before Chris Harris, there was Alain de Cadenet. His Victory by Design series really made me grow up about appreciating cars. Before him, it was hp and torque. After the VbD series, I grew to appreciate the details, the engineering, and most of all the histories of models and makes, the quirks... Good to see he's still doing these drives and sharing his sentiments.
Tiff Nieedel was also good
Thank you Alan! One of the most magnificent Ferrari's ever. The 250 GTO, 275, the Daytona, F40 and the 288 GTO are, as the Brits would say, "Proper Ferrari's"!
The road and scenery were stunning.
This is no car.
It is an istitution, a love letter to motoring
Sorry to disappoint you but it is a car
And aesthetics

Commander Alpha James May is that you?
The world's most British person, with the French name.
And driving a very Italian car :))

He’s no David Attenborough, close though.
The most American person, with a British name:

You can't change your heritage/blood by being born somewhere else. A pig born in a horse Stall is no Thoroughbred. So tired of this marxist rhetoric in popular culture.
Alain is the Attenborough of the automobile world. Such a treasure. Thanks for the great video!
Just found out that unfortunately he passed away. I have such fond memories of watching his victory by design series as a kid, if anything he molded my taste in cars.
RIP Alain, such a great presenter and nice speedmaster!
As soon as i saw Alain de Cadinet i clicked!
Alain isn't so cool, calm and collected when Ray Hanna flies a Spitfire just above his head for a TV documentary in 1996. Ray was flying SO low that Alain gets knocked over by the downdraught of the Spitfire! Check that out on UA-cam if you haven't seen it already. Alain's reaction is hilarious!
Missing Alain's great automotive contributions. Thanks for featuring him!
It's uncanny that the turbos don't stifle the sound of that V8, but instead it has an outrageously great exhaust sound. It almost sounds like that was the sound chosen for Petrolicious' opening.
Honestly as a NA V8 owner, no turbo can match a naturally aspirated induction in sound, not even a GT0 288. The turbo changes the exotic rocket sound into more of an oversized tin can sound, although the V8 helps saving it. Today the V8 are replaced with puny i6 or V6 and the sound just sucks.
@@goognamgoognw6637 let me guess. Ur an American
@@sayandhsooraj1361 hell no, that would be an insult. Neither do i like US cars.
This has the Ansa megaphone exhaust, which was one of the few options available. The standard exhaust, with two smaller outlets per pipe, for a total of four exhaust tips, doesn’t sound anywhere near as gruff and nasty ( in a great way! ) as this example does.
RIP to a legend of the automotive world, and from what I understand, a gentleman in every respect.
No exotic engine sounded this menacing. The best Ferrari ever, and I love that this was filmed on a gray day, because that makes the paint pop.
I love Alain. Hadn’t seen him in a few years. He’s a good bit older than I remember. Time is cruel. Great VIDEO!
yes. his legends of motorsport series was must watch tv!
ShmuelWeintraub absolutely
Met him a few times at the Goodwood Festival and Revival. Nice guy and a proper car enthusiast.
The shibilantsh from hish falsh teesh theesh daysh are teshtimony to the cruelnesh of the yearsh.
I think his daughter gave him those grey hairs..Always been a fan of him..
I never realized that there was that much of a difference in the chassis & weight dimensions of this car and a 308. Leave it to Alain De Cadanet to reveal those details!
Jeff Haring *Alain de Cadenet
@Jeff Haring GTO was an 308 GTB with steroids... Anyway GTO was a beauty and a beast in the same body ❤️❤️❤️
@@GeneralLee1961.3 That's like saying "a son is its father, but on steroids".
I beg to differ. Although there is identical "material", 288 is not 308, it's a GTO.
Is F40 a GTO on steroids? Same spaceframe, suspension, passenger compartment, roof, doors... Nope, it's an F40.
@Durandal475 The GTO is completely different from the F40. But is identical to the 308! I’m referring to the design only...
oh yeah, what a mistake to compare 308 or 328 with 288! 288 comes from an other planet. Very great video.
The 288 GTO has been my dream car since it was new ... and now this road is my dream trip too!
Alain was simply the best.
To my eyes the most beautiful car ever built.
Thank you Petrolicious... For several years I've shared your "tastefully" mature and well-produced content with my daughter and son. As a family, we appreciate being afforded the opportunity watch and learn about these timeless beauties. Additionally, a special "thank you" to the owners of these fine machines... your generous contribution is keeping "this" alive.
Wow the Evo 288 GTO 2000 lbs and 650 HP = a monster and 225 mph
Very impressed they took one of these gems out in funky weather.
I always enjoy Alain's commentary his voice and knowledge is the best. Thank you this is so cool.
Fantastic video - thank you for posting this. Wonderful to see Alain de Cadenet again!
The Victory by Design series with AdC still stands the test of time as a highlight for car nuts.
Kudos to the owner of this 288GTO for allowing it to be driven, and in bad weather no less.
The sound of the engine travels up the spine like a first kiss. What a great car, thanks for taking us for a ride.
Rest In Peace, Alain De Cadenet…..
Great to see Alain. His style and knowledge comes second to none.
Alain De Cadanet!!!! Hell yeah!!!
What an absolutely stunning automobile. The thing dreams are made of.
This man speaks with so much passion and intelligence. It is a delight to listen to him tell stories and facts about the car.
This is the best video on this car I have seen. Alain is knowledgable without being boring and this episode simply delivers a rich engagement seldom encounrtered on UA-cam.
This is my favorite car ever.
Just learned of Mr. de Cadenet's passing, and this is the first video that came to mind, because it seems it wasn't all that long ago...
Race in Peace, legend.
Me too. Very sad indeed.
Some balls, driving a vintage, multi-million dollar car through drizzly winter weather on misty mountain roads whilst casually chatting to an invisible crowd.
It’s been forever since I’ve seen Alain present. Kudos to petrolicious for rigging this perfect match up! 👏🏻
Fantastic to see Alain De Cadenet making a car film about again. His Victory By Design series was excellent. His daughter isn't bad either!
Bravo Alain de Cadenet, thank you for the best 288 video I've seen and such a tribute to a beautiful car, it's no wonder why the GTO is so collectable. R I P Alain de Cadenet.
One of the best shows that was on TV. Alain de Cadenet really knows his stuff.
What a majestic ending... the magnificent beast... and the echoes of its roars rumbling through the mountains...
FANTASTIC! I miss Victory By Design, easily one of the best car shows ever. Looking great Alain, God Bless.
I love the thorough background that's included here. Not just a typical post-production edit and music. It completes the car make/model viewing experience.
Who else wants a reboot of "Victory by Design" with this guy hosting once again?
I'll be honest. I'll watch anything hosted by Alain. He is the Rick Beato of motorsports. Instant credibility; anything he says about his field of expertise is to be immediately taken to the bank.
Wonderful! Alain is a great host, thanks for having him!
The good old days when cars smoked on start up
They still do if it's wet and cold... :)
I own a Rotary. It's always 'The good old times' 😂
Yeah, stupid progress.
The good old days.... When starting a car was a mixture of wishes and prayers.
@sasquatch You dont understand what hes taking about and no need to insult him moron, millennial i assume?
Outro scene like Tolkien; credits full of evocative names. What a fitting tribute to arguably the most beautiful expression ever of the automotive sporting aesthetic.
Thank you for giving me one last episode of victory by design 😢
Che bella Macchina!!! 😍!!!

When I was in college (20+ yrs ago) I wanted to marry Amanda de Cadenet. That way I could have a beautiful actress as my wife and a legendary driver, collector and host as my father in law. Needless to say I had a rich fantasy life.
I'll drink to that!
Beat it. I saw her first.
She was a stunner back in the day
Eric Hakanson we all did but she ended up marrying and subsequently divorcing John Taylor of Duran Duran
@@craigstark8866 I told her at the time that she shouldn't marry him. I said "there's no way he'll appreciate your dad's car collection like I will!"
Tremendous video. The 288 GTO is by far the best Turbo charged car sound I have ever heard in a street car. I know I will never own a 250 GTO, but with some good wealth management/growth I may be able to swing a 288 GTO in a few years. That is my target Halo Ferrari (a guy who owns a '09 430 Scud and a '19 488 Spider).
There is a millionaire guy from my hometown that owned a bunch of McDonald's restaurants that bought one of these--the 288 GTO. I saw it on the road a few times tooling about town--quite a sight driving down the city's main row where nothing more exotic than a Cadillac regularly had been. He also bought one of the first modern Studebaker Avantis that came off the line in Youngstown Ohio. I could only watch in awe and did not try to catch this thing that was so exotic in my anemic little Iron Duke Chevrolet Monza. It was fun to see. I have also seen a 512 Berlinetta up close also, owned by this little Italian man who was a mortician in my hometown--he was a motorhead who still owned his first car, a T-bucket hotrod with an Olds engine and an Offy intake--straight 1950s.
I wish that 288 GTO was still around.
I was sorry to hear of the death of Alain de Cadenet. A fine driver whose enthusiasm and knowledge shine through here; and in all else he did. A gentleman.
Wow, I haven't seen Alain since the speed channel back in the day!!
One of the prettiest things cobbled by human hands.
Loved this episode, like watching a 1980s/90s episode of Top Gear - and I mean that in a good way. Old school style presenting without any nonsense and silliness. Thank you
Thank you for this amazing film ! and thanks to Greg for sharing his car
Easy thumbs up for that lovely noise, it's going to be a sad day when you can't hear things coming down the road.
It’s good to see Alain again. Slightly older (as are we all) but just as full of passion, exuberance, and pure love of great cars as ever. A true gentleman racer with encyclopedic knowledge. Best wishes, good sir.
This should have north of 5mil views, anything with Alain de Cadenet hosting, laying down history on us is pure Gold.
Wow seeing Alain again brings back so many childhood memories when I would just drool over the cars he was driving. What a fantastic presenter.
Who the hell down votes a 288 GTO?
I think it's about the Petrolicious membership, not the car or video
Someone who thinks a 911 is pretty?
Lamborghini die-hard fan perhaps lol.

When I was a child, I first saw a Ferrari in a neighborhood garage. I had only seen these car in movies. No internet, no pic. I remember the amazement and wonder : ''Wow''. My friends and I tried to see the interior and the speedometer, to see the maximum speed.
The 288 GTO and the F40 are for me the two most beautiful cars of all time... 😍😍😍😍
Legendary and so rare Ferrari!
Macchina che ti fa innamorare ed appassionare ad un mito...
SEMPRE FORZA FERRARI...
This is the car that appears in my mind when I think Ferrari.
No childish wings, his hysterical, provocative lines.
Just an elegant car with unforgivably beautiful proportions
One of the most greatest presenters showcasing one of the most mythical iconic Ferrari’s ever. 😌🙏🏼
the Victory by Designs of yesteryear was so good. Happy to see this!!! Alain is a wonderful presenter!
The ending scene and the echo of this GLORIOUS car is biblical! Great job Petrolicious
Thank you Alain for speaking in behalf of a very special car!
Alain de Cadenet could review a blender and I would watch the whole thing. Also, what a car. I don’t know what I like more, the exterior, interior, or the sound.
The quality and naration of this video is oustanding. Bravo!
Alain, you remain the master of describing classic race cars.
I've been watching for years on and off. Always impeccable camera angles along with color grading. Keep up the Amazing work!

Why cars cannot be like this ,compact ,powerful, raw and clean !
cause people want big and chunky, thicc and chunky suv that they can roll into without moving their limbs, so automakers deliver, and the soul turns into a wraith chained to the past,
...and lets not forget just how bloody handsome this thing is!
She's one of my childhood heroes and remains my favourite Ferrari to this day. - Nice video!
It's great to see Alain de Cadenet again. This was a wonderful episode.
It's very rare to see such passionate elderly man. This man should be a presenter on an automotive program. I can sit all day and listen to him talking about cars.
EDIT: I looked him up, he's really a presenter, lol!
There is a DVD I have of him presenting the classic Ferrari's. It's about 12 year old.
Look up Victory by Design.
Victory by Design might just be the finest automotive feature production series ever made, check it out.
I was Waiting for this video for so long 🥰🥰
Yes! Victory By Design is back! Make more. Make more!!!!!
So nice to see ADC in his element, ragging an Italian exotic and chatting away. I’ve grown up reading/listening/watching him wax lyrical on cars for over four decades now and never tire of his insight and wit.
To see him with my all-time favourite Ferrari is a real treat.
Thankyou Petrolicious 💕
Just now watched this outstanding video for millionth time and reading the comments have I learned of Mr. de Cadenet’s passing. I am in shock. The world has lost yet another true Legend and Gentleman. All of Alain’s videos and work are now more valuable and instant classics. Wow. Blown away.
RIP Alain. Take Enzo on a fast journey in one of his 288 GTO’s.
Best looking car of the last 50 years.
Ryan Long well judged. I agree, and for me, the Alfa 8C is high in that list too.
R.I.P Alain de Cadenet. Gentleman presenter and all class.
That end shot from the sky...epic.
I always enjoyed Alain's car programmes that aired on obscure channels and rarely got on UK mainstream TV. His little Mews garage and his Massers, used to make me quite envious.
This car represents the true Ferrari, a proper, simple pure machine.
"There's snow on the ground and it's wet". "Yeah? So, here's the keys.. Just dont lose them - it also has my FOB and house key on that ring."
Alain de Cadenet simply the best and the GTO always been my dream car
I was nearly in a race with a GTO back in 85 with my 3.0 turbo Porsche which maxed out at 172 (gear limited). Alas, I was taking my freeway exit but was able to see in my rear view mirror the red GTO beginning to spool up his turbos (as evidenced by the twin puffs of smoke at the rear). We had been at a car show earlier in the weekend. It would have been interesting to see how that would have been-but it was a public freeway! This video is well done. The fog is a necessary element. One need not actually have a clear view of the GTO. The sound is what you’re after.
What a brilliantly shot video .....the fog on the roadway and the host so knowledgeable....the view through the rear glass facing the driving direction and those drone footage! The twin turbo Ferrari sound!
I miss "Victory by Design" very much :(
I don't, I just watch it on the dvd player.
I loved those episodes.
I loved seeing him do an abbreviated version of that spectacular show here once again.
This was phenomenal.
Amen!!!
The first thing I thought of when seeing Alain in this. Have them all on DVD 👍🏼
