The Ford MkIV was completely new car designed and built in USA (Ford did not call it a GT40 because it ain’t). The MkIV soundly beat the P4s at Sebring and LeMans in 1967.
The Mk II was so far removed from the 289 GT40, it was almost a completely different car. Engine, transaxle, brakes, bodywork, monocoque strengthening etc. The Mk IV was a clean sheet of paper design with the help of Ford Aerospace and Kar Kraft. Sadly, people call a Mk IV a GT40, which is simply not the case. The Mk IV btw is about 39" high.
@@michaelmeece - Not for long it didn't! That was quickly found to be a weak point as it was not designed to handle the prodigious torque produced by American V8s. Even Eric Broadley had issues with it in his first attempt at Le Mans with the Lola MK6. The shift linkage back to the tranny was cable operated and created a host of problems relevant to it! The Ford MK II with the 427 used the Ford top loader transmission which had no problem with large amounts of torque. 😉
I'm liking what I see here , excellent historical content . Subscribed and waiting for more ! I was 9 years old when I watched Chris Amon win the NZ Grand Prix in the gorgeous 246T , I have been a fan of Amon and Ferrari ever since . Issigonis had made one for Enzo , so Chris said "I want one too !" And they built him one ! Useless information I'm sure , but these were my thoughts as I watched your work . Thank you for jogging my memory .
personally, I was really hoping the Chapparal 2F would have won. It was as fast as and the handling was better but the auto trans was a weak link it did win the BOAC 500 in Phil Hill's last race. But the P4 was a gorgeous piece of art.
First congratulations on the wonderful work on this video. It is a good insight on the history of racing. It seems that at least in part the rivalry between the two manufacturers was due in part to their corporate head's ego's. Ultimately it is their competitive edges that drove each opponent forward. We can hem and haw about what we applaud or disdain about each but their accomplishments and contributions are undeniable to the sport.
Cool Video, may i suggest another one on this topic: the Le Mans race of 1965, but the focus on the winning "private" NART Ferrari piloted by Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory. They only didn't retire early in the race because the big service trucks had blocked Jochen Rindts private car unintentionally so he couldn't leave.
Not taking anything away from the Ferrari P4, one of the loveliest cars ever built, but you sure seem to gloss over the fact that the Ferrari P4 (and P3/4) were beaten quite handily by the Ford MkIV at Sebring and LeMans later in 1967. As others have noted, Ferrari never won at LeMans again after Ford won in 1966. I’m sure Enzo would have swapped his Daytona sweep for another LeMans win. So who had the sweetest revenge?
It is funny that sterling moss now owns a Shelby American gt350. I guess he wasn’t that upset. Racing in those days was a fantastic era. Those men who raced and many died doing so are icons in the racing world. Amazing times and tanks for bring those days back to us in the video. There is nothing today that can replace it.
Drove today Daytona 1967 with an Alfa Romeo Tipo 33. 15th Place of 19. On the infield good performance but on the straight no chance with a 2L 8 cyl. against the other monster. But the Tipo 33 is the most beautiful car ever built.
Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona was launched in '68 and (according to wikipedia) was named after this win. Weren't Ford mostly focussed on LeMans, as opposed to winning the WSC championship?
That might be so, but Ford should not have let Ferrari trounce them so convincingly on home soil in 1967. Daytona was no backwater race, it had prestige and WSC status, and one of very few 24H races. The Ferrari 1-2-3 win was a brilliant riposte to Fords 1-2-3 at Le Mans 1966, and they marketed that victory to maximum effect.
@chris davidson - Was the Ferrari Daytona really named after the race, or was it just a copy of Ford's FIRST use of the name in 1964 on the Cobra Daytona? Lol
They oughta make "Ford v Ferrari 2". Get Ron Howard to direct it and have as many of the previous cast in it as appropriate. Tell the story of that epic payback as Ferrari finish 1-2-3 at Daytona to restore its honor.
1967 was the proof that just throwing money to the issue is not worth anything without the right people. Ferrari were nowhere close to Ford's budget, but racing was in their blood. Ford lost Miles and lots of people who actually knew what they were doing. The 330 P4 and Daytona's display was one of the most dominant wins ever
What a brilliant video, as a 90’s child I really envy racing of those days. My father is a huge Ford and Shelby fan, and I’ve been lucky enough to have read a few books and watched some video tapes he has on the history of that partnership, as well as taking on Ferrari after him declining being bought out by Ford. Ford really was out to win every series of racing back in those days, and I’m struggling to think of another manufacturer that has won as many different types of racing. Correct me if I’m wrong....
Both Porsche and Mercedes-Benz come to my mind if you take the germans, or Toyota for a Japanese one. btw. as you seem interested in the old racing stories, there's great video about the race in Le Mans of 1965 telling an almost forgotten part of the story: ua-cam.com/video/iR8FP1_pjn0/v-deo.html
@Sam - You are 100% correct! Ford has participated in and won more varieties of racing, world wide than any other manufacturer. They got involved in stock car racing, dirt track racing, various types of modified racing, hill climbing, off road car and truck racing, World Rally Car racing, sports car racing, Formula 1 racing, drag racing.......it just goes on and on and NO ONE has done it to the extent of The Ford Motor Co. Period!😆🏆 🏁
As a little kid born in the early 60's. I watched the cartoon Speed Racer. And the cars that he would race against, looked like the 330 P4, Maserati Tipo 61 and Alfa Romeo 33 Straddle. I loved the look of those cars!!!

As an American I don’t really care who wins at prototype endurance racing as long as the car is pretty and advances the technology toward. We wouldn’t have the great sports cars of today with out them.
The true story is tha Ford, after their triumph in 1966 managed to win Le Mans (the greatest race of them all) in 1967, 1968 and 1969 despite the fact that the Europeans banned Fords mighty FE427R
Well, people love Ferrari for his racing history and design of the cars. I don't. I don't like racing at all, but I recognize that racing is where new things in ICE car making are tested like Lubricants, Tire designs, brake models, suspensions, etc, etc, etc. But the despise that Enzo Ferrari did to Lamborghini regarding the clutch and transmission problems is a no-no for me, and that put the nail on Ferrari's coffin for me. Automotive history is loaded with tales of drivers, race teams, manufacturers and buyers... all turning against each other to do better for competition and ego .. and I'm happy bout that.
You win some, you lose some. Ford’s winning of the La Mans in 66 is a great story as well as their many additional successes, but ultimately Ford had to prove itself against Ferrari. It goes without saying that Ferrari has a proud tradition of victory in motorsports. They have nothing to prove.
How can it be revenge by Ferrari when ford kicked their asses in Le man's for 4 years, and 50 years later in 2016? That Daytona 77? It doesn't even count.
The factory teams butted heads 4 times at LeMans, Ferrari won in '64 and '65, Ford in '66 and '67. In '68 and '69 the private Gulf Wyer team won, beating Porsche.
I remember this from '67. I've never been so happy as I was then to see Ferrari putting not one, but three over the US 'just throw money at it' philosophy. Remember at the previous year's Le Mans, it took 7 litres of Ford to defeat a mere 4 of Ferrari. Ferrari - artistry; Ford - brute force. FORZA FERRARI.
You forget to add the part that Ferrari got their asses handed to them on a silver platter by Porsche and eventually giving up on Le Mans thanks to Niki Lauda who said they have to put all their efforts into F1. And only won again at Le Mans in 2023 since 1965
You might try to recall that Ferrari totally dominated the 1972 World Manufacturers Championship with the awesome 312PB; Porsche very wisely went CanAm racing instead since they had no answer for the 312PB. Ferrari rightly recognized that pursuing Lemans and F1 simultaneously was too much so focused on F1 and the result was two WDC's with Niki Lauda in 1975 and 1977 with the awesome Ferrari 312T. Not too shabby I might add and a racing record to be proud of. 🤟
The music overshadowed the narrator's voice so much that it was hard to follow and enjoy this historical masterpiece!! The overall production was great but the music was too loud and could hear his voice well to follow!!
@@PROJECTDREAMMULTIMEDIA while true I am surprised that proud innovator Ferrari would stoop so low as to copy a car they publicly bashed when it first hit the track .
The '67 P4 was just an update of the '66 P3. It looked to me that the MkIV copied the lines of the P4. The J-Car was designed by the stylists like the original 1964 Gt-40 was, and they were both aerodynamic disasters. So Phil Remington developed a body for the Js that followed the lines of the P4.
Another thing you won't see is any Corvette, or any Hemi from Chrysler. This is one of the reasons why I like Ford. Unfortunately GM is mostly Chinese now, and isn't technically a car company anymore, and Chrysler is wholly owned by a company called Silantis. Ferrari only sold road cars as a means to an end. Ferrari kept creating more and more competitors by pissing off his very valuable employees and wealthy customers. Mr. Bizzarini was an engine designer and engineer who worked for Ferrari who ended up starting his own car company and competing against him. Same with Swiss company Montiverdi, and the guy who started ISO Rivolta. Even Mr Lamborghini was a former Ferrari customer. Although Lamborghini said in his articles of incorporation tha he would never build a racecar. Thanks.
@@markhale8084 I meant since the 60s since the post I’m replying to says “to this day”, read closer. The privateers have won it plenty of times since then, just not the overall win since them nor Ford competed in it.
The winner in my opinion was always Ferraris. To think, FORD, a giant American firm had to spend millions to beat a SMALL company from Northern Italy. Incredible.
Ferrari may have won at Daytona, but the last time Ferrari had an overall victory at Le Mans was 1965. Great video though very well done. After the reign of Ford from 66-69, Porsche won a couple years straight, then it was the Matra, then Porsche again, although in 75 it was a Ford Cosworth Matra with a couple famous chaps by the names of Derek Bell and Jacky Ickx. Then like future Audi, Porsche would reign again for 6 years straight. The last time I think Ferrari had a LMP1 class car was the Ferrari 333SP in the mid 90's. I hear Ferrari will be returning to the Hypercar along with some other heavy hitters. Ferrari did have an outstanding half a decade from 1960-65, then not sure what happened.
Ferrari dominated the World Sportscar Championship in 1972 with the 312PB. The Formula One derived engine was ideal for the shorter 1000 km and 6 hour races, but not designed to last 24 hours so they skipped Le Mans that year. Winning 10 out of 11 races in the championship is still a very impressive result.
@@magikjoe3789 well since he commented a year ago it would make it one year. I said his comment didn’t age well, not that they haven’t won in over sixty years. You’re only 59 + years off. Nice try though 😂. Reading comprehension can be tough for some people. You’ll get it 😃👍🏻

@@markhale8084 Mark , you are right in case of the Mk 4 , butt admit Ford had a great example with the GT40 to work from .
It also had an Italian transmission.
I got to meet him in 2011 at The Chris Amon Festival at Hampton Downs Raceway and I asked him which car was his favorite ( hoping he would pick the 246T , because I loved it so much ! ) ,
and he said that his favorite was the Automatic Mini that Alec issigonis built for him . Issigonis had made one for Enzo , so Chris said "I want one too !" And they built him one !
Useless information I'm sure , but these were my thoughts as I watched your work . Thank you for jogging my memory .
No matter what country you are from, if you love racing, you love Ferrari.
personally, I was really hoping the Chapparal 2F would have won. It was as fast as and the handling was better but the auto trans was a weak link it did win the BOAC 500 in Phil Hill's last race. But the P4 was a gorgeous piece of art.
Great choice of music, AC7 fits well here 👍🏻
Nice use of the Ace Combat 7 BGM, I was quite surprised to hear it, nice work with music!
Hold up. I know Ace Combat music when I hear it. You have great taste man! This channel just adds all of my favorite things together
I love the voice actor
I'll tell him he has an admirer hehe
Oh mama, now this is proper work ! Keep at it lads, it's going to go big for sure.
WELLLLLL.....Ferrari will be campaigning a HYPERCAR in 2023....I was born just over the mountain from Maranello...guess who I'm rooting for!

But what would anybody in their right mind choose between Ferrari vs Ford.
I have both F430 and 66 Mustang fastback. Come on. No comparison.

Sterling did own a GT350 but he sadly passed away a couple of years ago.
Chris Amon was a boyhood hero of mine growing up in New Zealand fantastic all-round race driver
Charming colorful character too. Notably while driving for Ferrari when their contraptions would breakdown.
Cheers from Fresno California. 🏆🏁💨🍺
I hope your channel will reach 1M subs one day, because the quality of your videos are astonishing.
Agreed. Ron Howard should have directed Ford v. Ferrari movie instead of that bonehead James Mangold. At the movie would have been more accurate.
I really like the ace combat music synced to this
Love the quality, the only critic is, music a little too loud.. instead of lingering in the background it's fighting the narrators voice..
Well done! I look forward to more of your videos.
Both Porsche and Mercedes-Benz come to my mind if you take the germans, or Toyota for a Japanese one.
btw. as you seem interested in the old racing stories, there's great video about the race in Le Mans of 1965 telling an almost forgotten part of the story:
ua-cam.com/video/iR8FP1_pjn0/v-deo.html
@Sam - You are 100% correct! Ford has participated in and won more varieties of racing, world wide than any other manufacturer. They got involved in stock car racing, dirt track racing, various types of modified racing, hill climbing, off road car and truck racing, World Rally Car racing, sports car racing, Formula 1 racing, drag racing.......it just goes on and on and NO ONE has done it to the extent of The Ford Motor Co. Period!😆🏆 🏁
Thanks for making this interesting and informative video
That was a great snippet of motor racing... Nicely done!.. Thank you and best wishes.

OMG yes, ace combat 7 soundtracks
Content aside, gotta love the RR4 aesthetic and ace combat music.
The content is top notch.
As a little kid born in the early 60's. I watched the cartoon Speed Racer. And the cars that he would race against, looked like the 330 P4, Maserati Tipo 61 and Alfa Romeo 33 Straddle. I loved the look of those cars!!!
Wonderful job!
The music volume is a bit too high. Makes it hard to hear the narrator.
The story of the Ford vs Ferrari didn't end in Le Mans in 1966 - now I know the full story, thanks. Well made video but may I suggest that you turn down the volume of the background music or leave it off completely? My hearing isn't the best and I had a hard time understanding your narration several times.
Thank you for the advice, i've seen different comments regarding the same issue, i didn't notice that the music was too loud while editing, the next time i will be more careful!
Thank you again!
@@PROJECTDREAMMULTIMEDIA If your hearing is working as it should, I guess you don't have an issue. My hearing is a little impaired and it's a bit hard for me to understand what someone is saying, if there is background "noise". But generally speaking, I would suggest to turn the music off completely when the narration is on and only play it in between. We're here for the story, not the music ;-)
Great video! Thanks!
The 330/P4 is the Most Beautiful Racing Car ever Built!!!
I prefer my 2014 Tesla P85D much better than any Ferrari ever built, although my Tesla has a ugly front, looks like Voldemort, but after 207K miles had never failed me............. But this is a very nice video!!!!!!
Ken Miles's death is why Ferrari was able to get their revenge. Had Ken Miles not passed, the automotive racing world would not be the same.
I do not agree with you
Maybe
Your delusional miles wasn’t a god and wasn’t a world champion of anything.
ifs and maybes don't make history. Ford could have failed anyways
The auto racing world changed after Jim Clark died in 1968; corporate sponsorship (in F1 at least) became necessary, and aerodynamics included wings.

You win some, you lose some. Ford’s winning of the La Mans in 66 is a great story as well as their many additional successes, but ultimately Ford had to prove itself against Ferrari. It goes without saying that Ferrari has a proud tradition of victory in motorsports. They have nothing to prove.
MrKnoxguy101, Ford set out to beat Ferrari at their own game and did it.
Especially for Ferrari being a little firm from Italy, compared to the biggest car company in the world, lol.

Is the background music from ace combat 7?

So what happened with this Ferrari magic through Le Mans 1967, 68, 69, and beyond? In what years after 1966 did Ferrari when overall at Le Mans?
It's explained around 8:05 :)
2023.
Outstanding thank you so much !!!!!
The music overshadowed the narrator's voice so much that it was hard to follow and enjoy this historical masterpiece!! The overall production was great but the music was too loud and could hear his voice well to follow!!
Imagine if Ken Miles was alive at that time. Things might be very different.
Why not make a film of this story?
It appears to me that Ferrari incorporated 66 GT40 design elements into their 67 P4 design .
It might be, it's a common trend we see in motorsport everyday afterall ;)
@@PROJECTDREAMMULTIMEDIA while true I am surprised that proud innovator Ferrari would stoop so low as to copy a car they publicly bashed when it first hit the track .
The '67 P4 was just an update of the '66 P3. It looked to me that the MkIV copied the lines of the P4. The J-Car was designed by the stylists like the original 1964 Gt-40 was, and they were both aerodynamic disasters. So Phil Remington developed a body for the Js that followed the lines of the P4.
Una produzione degna della BBC. complimenti ragazzi!
Thanks.
wait. chinnesse? how? and when that happened?

This was Ferrari's revenge after 1966. Sadly, though, they didn't win the Le Mans, Ford got them again.

@Michael L Need to read up a bit more or better craft your responses, after the 66 sweep Ford won again in 67 (glossed over in this video), 68 and 69.
Incredible.
Good job
Thank You! :)
Probably concentrated most of his efforts on F1?
