I'm of that age with the privilege where I saw them in a 500 people venue. Check out Down in the sewer versus Walk on by versus Tank. Jazzy riffs, mental heavy bass, freaky keyboards and a drummer that doesn't fit but does fit and is genius. Stranglers IV could have been made and released by Idles this year - yeah, really. So....all you young 'uns should lurv 'em. I hope.
I don't believe that this band received much airplay in the U.S., which is a shame. So many of us stateside stumbled upon them by accident, those of us who were lucky and explored alternative music to any degree or depth...a truly great and talented band!
Believe it or not my music conoissuer son introduced me to this band back in the late 90's he was a teenager, but has always had the most exquisitive taste in music all of his life. He's vast on the music trivia as well. Old Soul I guess?
Reason, it's always heartening to hear a new generation expressing appreciation for music that was popular before their time. I relied heavily on my nephew, when he was going through his teen years, to supply me with bands he listened to, and it helped me find great groups like Spoon, Leo and the Pharmacists, and Cake. Probably never would have stumbled on them on my own...
I was an 80s kid, but truly I never appreciated The Stranglers as much as I should have done. This, Golden Brown, Always the Sun, so many of their songs were peerless, and it's taken me this long to get it. (Similar with Human League, PhD and several others.....)

Ooooo Now I wanna hear ....
Only one more?!!
Brilliant idea having the band take off masks and reveal each other! :)
I guess I am at the part of my life where I learn about great music only because of sad news. RIP. Can't wait to listen to more.
Happy discoveries!
I hope.
Love this genuine comment
'Watch out for the Skin Deep' .... how true .
This is a classic in any era, not just the 80s
What a wonderfully haunting song performed by the utterly brilliant group that is the Stranglers 🎸🎸🎸
Just love that keyboard riff.
RIP Jet Black 💔 privileged to see you twice in the 70's.
Just seen the sad news, I'm gutted, I've seen them so many times over the last 35 years and fortunately I was lucky enough to meet them. RIP Dave
Late seventies was a life saving period to be discovering music in Britain/Ireland...the raw talent and competition ....unrivaled...!
Correct I've been to watch them twice in the 70
Reason, it's always heartening to hear a new generation expressing appreciation for music that was popular before their time. I relied heavily on my nephew, when he was going through his teen years, to supply me with bands he listened to, and it helped me find great groups like Spoon, Leo and the Pharmacists, and Cake. Probably never would have stumbled on them on my own...
Aural Sculpture is one of my all time favorite albums! Not one bad song on there.
The drummer founded the band. He was unhappy in life and thought there must be a better way.
Takes me straight back. I'm 14 again. Cheers, Dave.
Fukin A bro.
RIP Dave Greenfield. Thank you for all the great music.
Dave was very underrated on keyboards, great time for the music... feels like i never left the 80's
When this song comes on .. everything else going on in your day gets put on hold till the song is done .. long live quality music.
so fuckin true
Nicely said.
Production wise, this is Roxy Music level, almost as close to perfection you can get.
IT - great production for sure, but still with a rough edge, in terms of the message in the lyric.
They were shit as well
Ian Thompson, brilliant comment, totally agree with the comparison to the mighty Roxy (I am a die-hard fan of them forever)
Ian Thompson
Right on, totally agree.
That's Ferry not Cornwell, he had a cold that day...
Brian 'Jet Black', brilliant :)
I really miss the 80's
One of their best. Truer words ne'er spoken.
I had the 12 inch single. Played it to death.
Goodbye Dave and thanks for all the wonderful music.
I was an 80s kid, but truly I never appreciated The Stranglers as much as I should have done. This, Golden Brown, Always the Sun, so many of their songs were peerless, and it's taken me this long to get it. (Similar with Human League, PhD and several others.....)
I'm a therapist, and the number of times a week I quote this song to my clients is unreal 🤣. So many lines to live by in a single piece of music!
Any bit in particular?
@@serinatang4184. The bit where it says give me a lot of money for doing nothing.
These totally cool dudes formed some of the music of my youth in NZ. I'm an old bastard now , but this is still the coolest music.
another great British band that made the 80s so awesome
Loved this song the first time I heard it.
When I was licensee of The Windmill PH. in Somersham in the nineties, JJ and Dave (the bag) plus the rest of the boys were regular customers. Lovely people and happy days !! R.I.P. Dave. Keep playing up there !!!!!!
RIP Dave Greenslade, your unique keyboard playing were part of what inspired me to take up keyboards.
