Most cities don't have a damn Cloud District, but our hardworking honest huntsmen lay solid foundation for the town's economy, and they appreciate a down-to-earth spot to lick a gourd and black out on some warm stones after a morning spent hauling a 500lb bull elk and polishing off a 30 rack of mead

I'd highly recommend while you're in the area, to take a boat from Windhelm out to Solstheim to see the Retching Netch in Ravenrock. Great story behind the name, much better than the Winking Skeever's supposed story. There's also a Dunmer cornerclub in Windhelm itself, bit run down but it's nice to see them keeping their culture alive despite their treatment by the locals.
I'd hesitate to recommend the corner club to this guy. He puts a lot of stock into how places hold up to fancy establishments, and this n'wah just won't see the appeal, I'm afraid. I doubt he's been to Morrowind
It's really interesting to see how different the two 'cloned' buildings were. It wasn't just the bar shape and the bedroll, but also the tidiness of the things under the bar.
As a loyal patron of the Drunken Huntsman, I hope I can explain what has endeared it so much to me and give it a few points in its favor. For one, the Drunken Huntsman is my go-to shop to trade, sell and buy weapons. They've always been courteous and have never been the type to swindle you out of your money. Most importantly, they've made me feel welcome as a Khajiit patron, which is so important when many establishments in Skyrim do the exact opposite. I think the attentiveness of the staff may have been because they're used to greeting customers to let them know they're welcome in a place that may seem otherwise unfriendly. I think it's just two brothers running the place, and if memory doesn't fail me they're also renting their upstairs attic to Nazeem and his wife. So I understand that from an official restaurant critic and public health inspection perspective, you have to be objective, but from a personal perspective, and judging it as a supply store rather than a restaurant, the negatives don't bother me. Thanks for your work as a critic-the heads up on Candlehearth Hall is appreciated. I was planning on stopping there on my Windhelm vacation because everyone spoke so highly of it! But now I'm thinking it would be best to choose somewhere else..
If you're taking a trip to Windhelm might I suggest New Gnisis Cornerclub? It's located in the gray quarter so it's a bit run down, but the service is amazing and they're much more friendly to khajiits.
As an Argonian i know what you mean, Skyrims inhabitants can be crule to us, even then we haved lived several generations in it, i can't tell you anything about Black Marsh except any legends anyother stranger could tell you, but then it comes to the snow tingeling on my face, the sound of stomping giants, or the Aurora Borialis in the night sky, to have my heart pour out of it, it'll sound like my ancestorst went to shore with Ysgramor him self. The two brothers of The Drunken Huntsman have done nothing less than to make me feel welcomed and as if i truly belong here, although i'm not a hunter myself i have from time to time got to be in on some big game feast others have feld
I love the idea of a nearly naked Argonian going around Skyrim loudly talking to himself about the restaurants and bars while he ignores everyone else telling him to leave from behind the counter meant for staff.
You might like a game called Winkltje it's a medival fantasy shop game where you own a store similar to the pubs and shops in Skyrim selling potions, food and all sorts. Bit like Skyrim/Sims/ petrol station simulator mixed together.
The Drunken Huntsman is pioneering by bringing the Cracker Barrel experience to Skyrim. There's an untapped market there for shopping at your dining establishment.
Helpful clarifications: • In the Frostfruit Inn, they decorate with Snowberry wreaths. • In the Drunken Huntsman, the actual meat is sold at a market stall, and all the meat at that stall is hunted fresh. It is owned by two young wood elves. It is a supply store, not actually a restaurant. • The “Sleeping Area” in the Vilemyr inn is where Wilhelm sleeps since he doesn’t actually own a house, and the other two rooms are for travelers. • No detail has been missed in Candlehearth. This one hopes this helps the friendly Argonian restaurant critic put a couple miscellaneous details into perspective.
dude that’s my worst nightmare 😭 my neighbor’s master bedroom is next to room and i live in fear that one day they’ll get a random youtube video cast to their tv
The sleeping area in the vilemyr inn must be for customers too drunk to go home who also can’t buy a room. The patron is laid there for easy supervision and is sent on their way at the earliest convenience.
If you do this again you NEED to go to my favorite inn, the Nightgate Inn. It's very out of the way, real remote place. But the surroundings are beautiful, they have a small pond and a pier which I think should be taken into account. I believe they even have a wine cellar. So there's a lot of extra features compared to the other inns with the same standard design. I can't speak for their small details as it has been a while since I've been there. I just love the location and find the place very interesting.
Nightgate Inn is worth the detour for sure if you're heading to the Pale from Dawnstar or Whiterun. I'm also partial to Old Hroldan Inn in the Reach, east of Markarth or south of Karthwasten. Very historical establishment and a welcome point of respite in an otherwise inhospitable region.
Nightgate inn is essential when you are doing errands to Winterhold/Windhelm and caught a bit of cold outside. Setting up camp can be tedious in such climate, so nightgate inn is very much my go to place to get warm food and good rest in between the walks.
Candlehearth Hall to me seems like a place that used to be great. I mean we know it's almost 163 years old. Back then they probably had some great success, and with it they bought some of the great furniture and decoration, set up the kitchen and all the spaces, but since then new ownership took over and didn't want to put in the same level of effort. It's likely the xenophobia was there the whole time but everything else has really fallen from the time that earned it its fame.
You should visit the local mines and craft workshops to assess the working conditions, the qualifications of the workers and to check whether the safety rules are observed in these enterprises.
Call it “Climbing The Seven Thousand Stairlift.” 😂 I haven’t paid too close attention ‘cus, ya’ know, _escapism,_ but I suspect none of the business in Skyrim would fit my wheelchair. Might be worth dusting off the VR version to check, though.
All my homies love a lick at the Drunken Huntsman. The name is a hint, you don't notice their stock problems when you properly pregame. And the gourd service is free, so really felt like he didn't do this one justice because he doesn't understand the local alcoholic bow hunting scene this lovely little joint caters to
I never would have put it together, but the wreaths on the walls in the Frostfruit Inn are definitely made from snowberry bushes, the perfect "frost fruit". That décor is most definitely intentional, and I love that attention to detail.
Putting a wreath (extremely flammable with all the thin dried-out wood and leaves) immediately above a candle seems like a pretty serious Fire Code violation. And there's a LOT of wreaths and candles in Frostfruit Inn!
Ivarstead is near where the greybeards live so it makes sense to have objects knowcked over - but that’s not an excuse for not picking stuff up- sometimes it seems that Klimmek is the only hardworking person in that town.
I feel like the frostfruit wreaths were put up (originally) by Erik's mom. It doesn't seem like the kind of thing a guy like Mralki would think of on his own, but he's definitely sentimental and fastidious enough to keep putting fresh ones up in her memory.
In Nord culture the hall is the centerpiece of any good communal building. Your meant to stand around the fire, drinking mead, telling stories, and singing songs. The tables facing the walls is completely appropriate since you usually won't spend much time actually sitting at them. When you have the Followers Can Relax mod, some LARP-ey player animations, ELFX, maybe a few custom bards to replace the lethargic ones they tend to hire, and you bring in a big party after a long day of adventuring, these kinds of places really come alive because they totally use the space correctly. The downtime creates some of my favorite moments in Skyrim when all the (unintended) systems come together just right
In terms of a fictional world, I like that they're not exactly copy-and-paste. Sure, the basic building probably is, but then they add touches that make them look like they're run by different people.
Yeah, it actually makes me wonder why that Dark Elf continually chooses to drink not only in that tavern, but RIGHT BETWEEN Elda and Rolff. Unless she does it just to annoy them. I would certainly respect that.
i'm starting to wonder if this guy really is an official for anything and not just trying to get free food. could just be one of those bloggers who exploit their clout.
The Candle Hearth Hall actually has a server (that get's murdered the second time you enter Windhelm in yoyr playthrough) and also a chef if I remember correctly. Also, don't forget the other bar in town run by the Dark Elves.
I wonder if "meat on shelf" would be a health code violation in Skyrim. Since there's no refrigeration, I'm assuming all meat is butchered the day of and used very quickly. There's no time for bacteria to accumulate.
Well and as he mentioned, the main problem is that contaminated fluids are liable to work their way onto lower shelves. You might have an excuse for putting salt and/or smoke cured meat above other food, but even then, best to avoid the appearance of such impropriety altogether. But if it was really fresh meat, it will be at it's juiciest then, and there's truly no excuse
They have refrigeration. It's Skyrim we're talking about, one of the coldest provinces of Tamriel. All they would need to do is keep it outside the main room that's isolated from the cold and has a fireplace in it.
Skyrim is cold and every building would have some sort of root cellar, even though it's not portrayed due to game limitations (restrooms/outhouses are lacking for example). Also, the meat could be salted.
@@tommarsdon5644 He even mentioned it in the last video, you could just keep it outside. They could just bury some barrels in the snow and free freezer. The inns in Dawnstar and Winterhold could have backdoors into little areas like this for the staff to use. Other than that, everywhere except falkreath and riften has snow. Throw some of that in a well-insulated container and you got a fridge.
idk if anyone else has saud this but for frostfruit inn i believe they have snowberry wreaths so fristfruit could be an alternative or older name fir the snowberries giving the tavern an interesting backstory lol
That would be super interesting as there is way more variety between the inns in that game rather being copy-pasted like a lot of Skyrim's are. My favourite is the one in Rhodes, I love going there to lose at Blackjack and hang out on the terrace and watch the trains go by. Just has a really nice vibe to it
I really enjoyed the whole vibe you had with video. The storytelling and editing is really well done. I would love to see more skyrim context. I wonder if you might take a look at some of the Jarl's kitchens. Who has a clean professional well stocked kitchen fit for a Jarl and how does their set up compare to the local tavern? I'd also love to see you branch out to inspecting the blacksmiths, apothecaries and who has the best court wizard, just all kinds of things!
I like how he’s eloquently describing the restaurant conditions and when he sits down, it’s revealed he’s an Argonian dressed in rags. Still, he’s a lizard with good taste.
I love the narrative structure of this one. I would watch a whole series of these! I wonder if oblivion and morrowind would give enough detail to analyze and talk about too.
You gotta hand it to the Dev Team. They could have done a copy and paste, but they added things like the red wreaths or the kettle rolling on the floor in front of a walking waitress ( 😂 ). With the racism of the bar wench, I don't feel bad about you nabbing some fresh bread off the shelf.
I think it's interesting how widely different some areas of the game are underdeveloped or developed with great care. A lot of the small towns are really uninteresting and even bigger cities like Whiterun, while visually interesting are somewhat underdevloped. Otoh, they went a great effort to add little touches all over some buildings, like the taverns. Probably different teams with different priorities and time constraints.
@@hissingbeatles499Well, I can think of a few. There's the Drumlin Diner, the Third Rail, the Dugout Inn, Power Noodles. Maybe you could count Pinelli's Bakery, Handy Eats, and Slocum's Joe in the General Atomics Galleria? Unless you fix things there, they have poor service, but hey if I was forced to serve in the same establishment for 210 years, would I be perfectly sane and working properly? No.
I love looking at this as if you’re on a cross country road trip checking out different establishments ala diners drive ins and dives but you’re in Skyrim lol
I strongly recommend checking out the tavern in kynesgrove, and the tavern owned by the lovely argoninan couple in Riften. And if you haven't been, Nightgate Inn is a wonderful stop, even with the rude bartender.
The meat at 20:20 looks like it might be dry aged, so dripping wouldn’t be an issue in that case, but I guess that hardly matters considering the other health code violation on the other table.
An issue to note in Candlehearth Hall is that the stairs dont have handrails, which is an OSHA violation. Any flights of stairs with four or more risers must be equipped with a handrail.
Ok hear me out, what if someone made a follow up series where they loaded up jaxons positioner or the creation kit to fix all of the issues and improve the restaurants of Skyrim, like kitchen nightmares Skyrim edition
I love this series, it's really conforting in a way. You're not over reacting, just a chill guy rating inns. I could watch hours of this, keep the good work !

Candlehearth hall really took a hit when Susanna the Wicked was murdered. Definitely a grim energy when their ray of sunshine was taken away from them in such an untimely manner 😭
Alright, some more restaraunts to be checked off the list... In Whiterun, you missed Jorrvaskr, which is a bit of an exclusive establishment for members of the Companions, but it does market itself as a mead hall. Since it's an exclusive establishment, I expect good things. We also have the small town inn in Kynesgrove, the Braidwood Inn. We've got the New Gnisis Cornerclub in Windhelm, which is in the slums and doesn't offer beds, but it's a favorite of the Dunmer of the city. In Riften, we have The Bee and Barb, which isn't the friendliest place, likely because of the crime rate, but at least it looks nice. In Falkreath, we have an establishment called the Dead Man's Drink to check out. The small town of Dragon Bridge has the Four Shields Tavern to check out. On the road between Windhelm and Dawnstar, we have the Nightgate Inn, and when you reach Dawnstar, you have the Windpeak Inn. Between Markarth and Rorikstead, we have the Old Hroldan Inn, which is a nice piece of history. Apparently Tiber Septim once stayed there, so I have high expectations. In the small town of Riverwood, we have the Sleeping Giant Inn. Heard some rough things about the owner. Finally, if you're willing to take a boat ride to the nearby island of Solstheim, where you'll be dropped off in the town of Raven Rock, we have The Retching Netch, where you can get a more Dunmeri, specifically Redoran, tavern experience. I've also heard tell of a secret establishment in Riften called The Ragged Flagon that is somewhere in the city's sewer system. Imagine the health code violations! I've heard that the service and clientele are pretty bad too. Best watch your coinpurse.
Knowing Skyrim, and just Bethesda games in general, I wouldn’t be surprised if the apple pie at 20:02 had just clipped through the table and ended up on the floor. Don’t blame the staff, blame the plane of reality they exist in
As I’m watching this it occurred to me that at some point in the future, there will be a game where you’ll actually be able to just role play as some restaurant critic and the game will react to your critiques.
As both a sushi chef in the current reality market and a Safety and occupational health specialist, i must admit that these assessments are spot on. Im more than willing to lend my professional expertise on such assessments, for the betterment of the adventurering folk
I just got home from urgent care with a broken foot and I cannot tell you how overjoyed I was when I saw this in my notifications! Exactly what I needed after this awful day.
dude this is GOLDEN. i know it is crazy and you'd prolly not gonna go it, *BUT* i wish to see same kind of reviews about all taverns of Skyrim, Oblivion and ESO. this would be like the dream content for me. idk how to explain it, but it gives me SUCH fantastic feel of cozyness i cannot describe. best of luck to you and your channel♥
The immersion of these videos is outstanding. You bring the exact right energy, and have just enough knowledge that everything sounds perfectly official, and it brings me joy. This and your employment surveys are tops.
I love these videos because it shows how detailed the devs were. The small differences between the small town taverns like in Ivarstead or Dragon's Bridge are so cool
If I'm not mistaken, then the bedroll in the BOH of the Vilemyr Inn is actually that of the waitress/bard. I think I remember her being from Riften originally, but she had to flee after a bad run in with the Black Briars, and the Innkeep took her in.
I remember when you had like 13K subs and were still doing Egg busters as your main content. Now you have 10 times that and you're even more amazing. Also, if you really meant what you said about being a server once, that's awesome. I really love knowing I'm listening to a working-class youtuber.
yea I’m still in food service. Managing now though because I’m a class traitor but hoping to be able to do UA-cam full time soon and go back to serving once or twice a week
I'm 5 minutes in and I'm really enjoying it. I'm honestly not even taking it as comedy, it's just sort of fun to casually listen to as immersive world building. Very creative take on things for some content to make.
These really make me appreciate the love and care that went into making this game feel like a real, lived in space. The self defense hammer is such a lovely detail, and Skyrim is just full of stuff like that. Things you'll probably never think about or even look at, but it's all there and all buttoned up in case you do.
on your way out of the town make sure to check out the bar in the gray quarter, i havent heard great things but if its the only competition to candle hearth i think its fair to give it a review as well
Would love too see more coverage on the 'lodging' part of these Skyrim inns/taverns and not just the food. From personal experience some quarters do not have doors or any kind of privacy. The staff will come in and watch me sleep, or there are heavy-looking deer heads (sometimes several) on the wall just above the bed that could fall down in the night.

Finally a channel for people like me who understand the true joy of video games: bureaucracy and logistics. Thank you Austin!
OSHA audits are so much more fun when you're watching.
Food inspection should be a mandatory part of every game.
I read this comment in a khajiit voice.
You're a Khajiit? Yeah, it would probably be best to choose somewhere else.
How’d a khajiit even get into whiterun? Aren’t your kind not allowed in cities?
I love the idea of a nearly naked Argonian going around Skyrim loudly talking to himself about the restaurants and bars while he ignores everyone else telling him to leave from behind the counter meant for staff.
i work in food service and i fucking LIVE for this shit austin lmao, thank you
You might like a game called Winkltje it's a medival fantasy shop game where you own a store similar to the pubs and shops in Skyrim selling potions, food and all sorts. Bit like Skyrim/Sims/ petrol station simulator mixed together.
@@mrzombie1780 This sounds super fun!! I've been needing a new game to play :-) Thanks for the recc!!!
The Drunken Huntsman is pioneering by bringing the Cracker Barrel experience to Skyrim. There's an untapped market there for shopping at your dining establishment.
a more gamey take on cracker barrel
this felt like one of those restaurant tour shows. Especially because you "walked" to windhelm
Helpful clarifications:
• In the Frostfruit Inn, they decorate with Snowberry wreaths.
Note: none of this was meant to be an “Erm, Actually” moment. This one wanted to say “Yes, and”, if this makes any sense.
I was so excited to watch that I accidentally cast this to my neighbor’s tv. I hope they enjoy it as much as I did.
They must have been so confused lmao.
dude that’s my worst nightmare 😭 my neighbor’s master bedroom is next to room and i live in fear that one day they’ll get a random youtube video cast to their tv

This made me laugh so hard
The "what're you eating today" and its just an entire raw gourd fucking sent me
I mean who doesn’t love a lick of the gourd from time to time.
"To her credit, I did locate some of the fresh baked bread, it does look pretty good"
*proceeds to steal the bread*
I laughed so hard at that bit 😂😂😂
I've heard tales of ghosts in Old Hroldan...
Nightgate Inn is my fav tavern❤ I love going there and hanging out by the pond, and it feels like such a cosy place out there in the middle of nowhere
A wine cellar with a dead body ... hell NO !!
@@slonk420Skyrim belongs to the Nords!
You should visit the local mines and craft workshops to assess the working conditions, the qualifications of the workers and to check whether the safety rules are observed in these enterprises.
The Bee and Barb is a personal favorite of mine, mostly because they offer unique drinks that you can't get anywhere else in Skyrim.
got a little kitchen, and a storage basement for mead and food, which doesn't hurt.
Yeah but farm equipment runs it
It would be interesting if you looked at buildings for ADA violations

that might be too real...

And the gourd service is free, so really felt like he didn't do this one justice because he doesn't understand the local alcoholic bow hunting scene this lovely little joint caters to
@@CetomimusGillii I always properly pregame, which means I level up a lot before going to Whiterun.

I always register the Drunken Huntsman as just a shop. Very bad marketing, a shame for the heated floor.
"Got some fresh baked bread-"
"NO, YOU DON'T."
@@p00bix They do seem pretty fresh, maybe they replace it before it goes too dry? Although that'd be a pretty big waste of fruit.
Ivarstead is near where the greybeards live so it makes sense to have objects knowcked over - but that’s not an excuse for not picking stuff up- sometimes it seems that Klimmek is the only hardworking person in that town.
He sure is. Good ol Klimmek.
You have a point there.
I love the little interludes you added between the restaurants, really made it feel like a travel show. Rick Steves travels Skyrim.
This series is so cozy, it's unreal.
Did you let the establishments know beforehand that you're coming, or did you show up unannounced?
i'm starting to wonder if this guy really is an official for anything and not just trying to get free food. could just be one of those bloggers who exploit their clout.

The Candle Hearth Hall actually has a server (that get's murdered the second time you enter Windhelm in yoyr playthrough) and also a chef if I remember correctly. Also, don't forget the other bar in town run by the Dark Elves.
The cook is Nils, who spend most of his time splitting firewood just before the market.
That other bar ran by the dark elves is ironically enough, an imperial spy hideout.
I wonder if "meat on shelf" would be a health code violation in Skyrim. Since there's no refrigeration, I'm assuming all meat is butchered the day of and used very quickly. There's no time for bacteria to accumulate.
There is some refrigeration. Marise Aravel in Riften uses ground Ice Wraith Teeth to keep the meat she butchers cold.
The wreaths above the horn torches look like a fire hazard
A bit different but it'd be nice to see similar videos with RDR2.
Love this idea.
oh fuck yeah
Not enough gamers care about thr living standards of these games' world. True attention to detail: 11/10 gamer
@@hafor2846 Definitely different teams
Markarth and Riften feels developed despite of them being the seediest places in Skyrim.
I'm really enjoying the travelogue angle to these restaurant critic videos. Please keep this series going!
What if you did this with fallout 4 restaurants?
That’d be fun maybe
Genius!
hell yes! Third rail would get a boost for Magnolia for sure, great aesthetics in there.
all two of them?
Omg you read my mind lol. I just started a new playthrough and was thinking about doing exactly this. :)
I wonder what the Amy's Baking Company equivalent would be in Skyrim...
You'd obviously have to do it as the Gourmet.
people always talk about resident evil food, but we tend to ignore skyrim food the most
As a fan of both RPGs and small restaurants, I LOVE this series. Detail analysis is both funny and fascinating.
I hope he can make it to Solstheim one day ! I've heard great things about The Retching Netch !
Frostfruit tavern: those wreaths are a possible fire hazard being so close to the horn lights.

These videos scratch a special itch in my brain
Drunken Huntsman is definitely a townie bar. I’m surprised Austin didn’t say anything about selling weapons and alcohol.
Fun Fact; the "inn" of the Drunken Huntsman is actually the residence of Nazeem and his wife.
Best watch your coinpurse.
the WHOA reaction is hilarious i feel everyons reaction when they first walk into windhelm.
I would love if someone made a mod for a 'Skyrim health inspector' questline.
I love how the pacing and editing are all presented exactly like some form of reality show. I love it!
Funny how the person rating taverns is an argonian in rags.

The deadpan humour is very funny. Youd get along well in my country of new zealand as we all have this humour and monotone voices
The immersion of these videos is outstanding. You bring the exact right energy, and have just enough knowledge that everything sounds perfectly official, and it brings me joy. This and your employment surveys are tops.
I’m crying at work. My god you are the best pseudo governmental worker style comedy I’ve ever watched. You have the perfect voice and delivery for it.
The wreaths are made of snowberries, so you're right in saying that they sort of represent the Frostfruit inn.
Also: you missed the Braidwood Inn
Regarding the "your back facing the door" I feel like you absolutely read me like a book. I am uncomfortable doing it but I suppose if I must I will.
As a Finn i really love your pronounciation of ivarstead! Even better would Be with The hard R - like scottish people say R!
20:30 I can't even, broke down laughing here, all the build-up was worth it lad 5/5
These really make me appreciate the love and care that went into making this game feel like a real, lived in space. The self defense hammer is such a lovely detail, and Skyrim is just full of stuff like that. Things you'll probably never think about or even look at, but it's all there and all buttoned up in case you do.
Kudos to Candlehearth Hall for serving dark elves despite the employee’s prejudice
The Drunken Huntsman feels like the Skyrim equivalent of a Subway in a gas station
on your way out of the town make sure to check out the bar in the gray quarter, i havent heard great things but if its the only competition to candle hearth i think its fair to give it a review as well
Would love too see more coverage on the 'lodging' part of these Skyrim inns/taverns and not just the food. From personal experience some quarters do not have doors or any kind of privacy. The staff will come in and watch me sleep, or there are heavy-looking deer heads (sometimes several) on the wall just above the bed that could fall down in the night.
