    I'm from Hawaii and SPAM is my JAM love love love it! Could eat it everyday all day long ;) Spam can be put in anything. I love spam on my saimen/ramen noodles. I love spam in my fried rice. I love spam and egg sandwiches for breakfast with a bit of mayo. I of course love spam musubi. You can teriyaki the spam and make it more sweet. spam also can be put in pancit. Loads of different dishes. Anything you use bits of ham or bacon on/with can be substituted with Spam :D

    This was very interesting to watch, we bought a whole variety of spam in our local supermarket and also from Our recent trip to Hawaii. We found some interesting flavors like teriyaki, cheese and spicy! You'll definitely enjoy the spam musubi better than straight out of the can. Spam is good cut up I to small pieces in fried rice and also makes a rather good soup stock because it's so salty. Enjoy!!!

    I like to microwave a couple of slices of Spam and then dice them and put them in macaroni and cheese. The cheese really neutralizes the salt and it makes the whole thing taste pretty good (in my opinion).

    When I was a kid we used to slice it thin and fry it so it had the same crunch as extra crispy bacon, and always paired it with macaroni and cheese and fried diced potatoes. Thinking about it that setup is a dietitian's worst nightmare lol but we only had it maybe 3 times a year if that and always during the summer.

    My Dad loved it fried with eggs on the weekend but I always rinsed it, sliced it and boiled it in about 1/2 in. of water in the skillet for 5-10 minutes to remove some of the salt/fat then simply pan friend it like bacon. The boiling makes a world of difference and was much better for his blood pressure.

      My best friend is Samoan. She makes spam musubi for family get-togethers and parties, and she always boils it first, too. I'd never heard of that. We had spam sometimes when I was growing up and always ate it fried with eggs and toast at breakfast. I really liked it, but I don't mind salt. I definitely think it's best when served with something like eggs or rice, etc. as opposed to by itself.

  • @pianopaws88
    @pianopaws88 8 років тому +20

    Spam musubi is also my favorite. I marinade it in brown sugar and soy sauce and some water before I fry it for the musubi.
    Another one is to put spam and pineapple in a grill, cook it up, and put it on a burger Bun with some lettuce and maybe mayo.
    Last one. Dice spam, make a scramble with it and eggs, throw it on a tortilla and add cheese and salsa.
    Military men in WWII actually got different slam than commercially. It was greasier and saltier. They used the grease as gun lubricant and to waterproof boots. They hated it and this poem was infamous.
    “For breakfast they will fry it;
    For supper it is baked;
    For dinner it goes delicate -
    They have it pat-a-caked.
    Next morning it’s with flapjacks,
    Or maybe powdered eggs -
    For God’s sake where do they get it?
    It must come in by kegs.
    Oh, surely for the evening meal
    They’ll cook up something new!
    But the cooks they are uncanny,
    Now the Spam is in the stew.
    And thus the endless cycle goes;
    It never seems to cease -
    There’s Spam in cake and Spam in pie
    And Spam in rancid grease.”

    Born and raised in Minnesota... the home of Hormel and SPAM, so what did I eat growing up? A lot of SPAM! I gave up eating red meat a bunch of years ago (nothing religious... just a mammal thing) and my three biggest losses were Pepperoni, Original SPAM and White Castle "Beef" Hamburgers (I also grew up with them).
    Fortunately for me Hormel makes Turkey Pepperoni which has less grease than traditional, and while most restaurants don't serve it, I make my own pizza at home typically and load it up! Hormel started making Turkey SPAM a number of years ago and it's now my treat about once a year. Last month I made my first ever Musubi with it and it was excellent. White Castle? There's a new one here on the Las Vegas Strip, but too much hassle to get to and I've never had their Turkey burger version of sliders, and don't know that I want to. Just give me Turkey SPAM (and pepperoni)!
    Emmy - Thanks always for your videos!

    When I was younger we didn't really have money, and they would give us tons of spam at the local church. We always took it out of the can, sliced it kind of thick and then put it two slices of it on a piece of bread, then put mayo on another slice of bread, then sandwich them together. hey emmy, i'm from guam and spam is sssuuuperrrr popular here. (average per capita consumption is 16 tins per person per year!) we eat it fried, in musubi, or as spam kelaguen.
    to make spam kelaguen (from ChamoritaMomma's Kitchen)
    1 can of spam (preferably hot n spicy)
    1/2 cup of chopped onions
    1/4 cup of chopped green onions
    6-8 FRESH key limes or calamansi (amount can be altered to ur liking)
    salt, to taste
    hot peppers or pepper flakes
    mash the spam, add in the onions and green onions, then squeeze in the lime/calamansi juice. sprinkle in salt and hot peppers or flakes. can be served with fresh titiya (another local dish), crackers, chips, or over rice :)
    enjoy!!

    I'm a Spam fan. I don't eat it much, but I always keep a couple cans in the pantry. It's great to have around for emergencies. When the expiration date is approaching, then I treat myself and buy another. I'll either fry it and have it with mustard, or just have it sliced thin on bread as a quick sandwich. That's probably my favorite way of eating it, just sliced thin on white bread. It seems to counter some of the saltiness. An interesting side note: Spam was the very first item I learned to cook when I was a kid. I was watching my younger brothers and there was a recipe on the can for how to make a mustard glaze and then bake it. So I tried it. I was maybe 14 or 15, and it was the first thing I actually learned how to cook. I'm now the primary cook in my household.

    My family was pretty broke growing up so we ate a lot of cheap dinners my mom could throw together really quick at the end of the day (Both parents working very hard and raising three kids). One of our favorite "treat" dinners was Original Kraft Mac n Cheese with fried Spam and green peas. They always start separate on the plate but you slowly start to mix them together and oooooh so good. Childhood on a plate for me.

    My daughters love when I make fried noodles with Spam (I use the low sodium version). Blanched ramen noodles, thinly sliced onions, thinly sliced cabbage, bean sprouts, thinly sliced carrot, cubed Spam. Season with either the seasoning pack from the ramen or a shoyu, sugar, mirin mixture. You can also add scrambled egg to it or a fried egg to top each serving. With love from Hawaii...we know our Spam (every year there is a festival in Waikiki called the Spam Jam. Look it up and I'm sure you will find a ton of recipes using Spam).

    There is nothing you can really do to spam to screw it up lol. fry it or added it to salads for a meaty flavor or even make spam salad. toss it into mac and cheese My favorite was the BBQ spam but they do not make that anymore so just fry it in some hickory smoked bbq sauce or fry it and dip it in sauce. My dad was military so he like everyone else got paid once a month and well we had a lot of interesting spam dishes we got creative with. Oh and canned treet too lol and I will still make spam just quick, simple and all in all good I think.

    I didn't have Spam in my house (in Hawaii) until a hurricane hit &it was donated to us. It has saved us countless times. We use the low-sodium, low-fat version and in dishes that tend to have lots of veggies. Spam musubis are the exception, but that's why it's got a big mound of rice!

    When I was a kid in the early 70's, one of the ways my Mother used to prepare Spam was to grate it with a cheese grater (actually a Salad Master but most people don't know what that is) on the finest setting and then blend with mayo and other ingredients to make "ham" salad sandwiches. It was just like ham salad they sold in the stores or at restaurants but on the cheap. It was great to take camping because it didn't require refrigeration. Spam used to be the poor mans ham but inflation and novelty have driven prices way up. There was even a lower cost knock off to Spam called Treet made by Armour Meat Company. Both are a "spiced ham" but Treet was half the cost and half the flavor. We were a Spam house but I will say I have' tasted it in years!

    Little bit of garlic powder, little bit of cayenne, few spoons of brown sugar, mix it all together, rub it on the side of thinly slice spam, pan fry until carmelized, near the end add a healthy squirt of Baby Ray's BBQ sauce, mix that till they're all nice and coated and cook for another minute or two until that sauce turns into a thick, sweet, delicious tar. Pop those onto a piece of bread with cheese and lettuce, maybe mayo, and scrape the sauce overtop, then add your other piece of bread. Pan fry it to make crispy if you like

    Hi, Emmy: Being from South Texas, I was trained from an early age to like the saltiness/savory aspect in conjunction with a hot cereal such as Cream of Wheat, Malt-O-Meal or even oatmeal (steel-cut oats are a favorite) that has been heavily sweetened with anything from white, granulated sugar to maple syrup, depending upon your preference. My Dad's and my favorite was Cream of Wheat made with milk, no water and finished with a generous pat of salted butter and very generously sprinkled with granulated white sugar. Just dip the slice into the sweet, thick cereal and enjoy. The trick is to slice it very thin (very much like how you sliced it in your video) and frying it until a very crisp and dark golden crust is achieved but the meat product is still toothsome and pink in the middle. I would suggest frying your next slices (I agree the 25% less sodium is our favorite) and folding the hot, crisp meat in a single slice of fresh, soft, white sandwich bread. This is called, in my family, "a fold over" and the best way to enjoy it is dipped into the creamy, orange yolk of a free-range, over-medium fried egg. Follow that bite with a generous sip of fresh, cold, whole cow's milk and it's like you're at my family's kitchen table. Enjoy!

      Ramen with egg and green onion? Wow. That's so weird. Long ago, my mom used to make us Chinese noodles with a chopped hard-boiled egg, sliced green onion, and a bit of soy sauce and broth. We loved it, but I always wondered where in the world she came up with that recipe. The closest she ever got to Chinese food was a small town restaurant which, undoubtedly, never served noodles with egg and green onion.

    I used to think Spam was horrendous as a kid, but I was starving at my bachan's house one day and it was kind of all she had. I ended up leaving it in the pan a bit too long, but that extra crisp was all it took to make me fall in love with it. I put it on top of ramen, I put it in fried rice, I put it in egg and cheese sandwiches, Spam musubi, etc. The hot and spicy version is my favorite; it tones down the saltiness and gives a more earthy, vinegary flavor of Tabasco sauce.

    I make a sauce with 1 part low sodium soy sauce (low sodium for obvious reasons), 2 parts Sake, and 1/4 part honey. I cut the low sodium spam thinly and fry it until it's very crispy on both sides. I then add the sauce and let it simmer until it gets somewhat thick and absorbs into the spam. I then pour the spam and sauce over rice. It's salty to be certain, but, it's also delicious.

    I don't know if you are going to read this or not but in my family when it comes to spam we partially boil it because of the amount of salt it has. You would slice the spam, put in a pan , cover the spam with enough water for it to boil for approx. 2 to 5 min or until the water boils out completely. Once the pan is empty, you can eat it immediately or fry it afterwards. Just a suggestion, if you were to eat spam again.

Our favorite ways to eat it: Chopped into rice with peas sprinkled with a bit of cheese to make a casserole; diced into scrambled eggs (the salt seemed to seep into the eggs so you could taste the hammy-ness); and chopped into bean soup which we always served with cornbread. I think it was always sliced, fried, and then chopped into the 3 dishes. I cannot remember the last time I had any, tho. You are a brave - and likely puffy - lady :-)

You just have to pan fry leftover steamed rice, small cubed spam, scrambled eggs, and equal parts of soy sauce and oyster sauce. I love Spam with everything mostly. My favorite recipe is Spam and Cabbage. Its super simple and takes little to no time to prep and cook,not to mention that its lightly fried with small chunks of potato so get ready for a tast explosion in your mouth. I use a whole Napa cabbage(you can substitute this) cut into larger bite size squares, dried ginger root(2 tbs) EVOO( 3tbs) 4 cloves fresh garlics diced 1 teaspoon sesame oil, 1 large shallot diced, 1/2 cup white vinegar, salt and pepper to taste ..and of course spam ..i also add a bonnet pepper i love the spice..Sautte' the garlic ,shallot on Medium heat until slightly translucent and then add the Napa Cabbage slowly and as it begins to wilt slightly you can add the more and alternate with folding onion mixture over it..continue this until all cabbage is in the pan and add ginger and sesame oil turn stove up to medium highl..and then chunks of potatoes and Spam..complete by adding 1 cup of water or veggie broth..let this sit for 15 min and once this is complete you can simmer on low for 5 minutes with vinegar..Enjoy ...

    I'm thirsty. ;-) Spam was also shipped to the UK in huge quantities in WWII as part of the effort to keep the country fed in the face of the German submarine offensive. That's where the humour of the Monty Python 'Spam with everything' sketch comes from. The British diet was very restricted during the war and people got sick to death of trying to do something new with the small number of things they could get, Spam being one of them. That's also responsible for it's low reputation post-war: the thing anybody wanted to eat after rationing was lifted was the same stuff they'd had to eat before.

    I am a little late to the party but the two best flavors of Spam (and these were not in your taste test) are the "Jalapeno" flavor and the "Hot and Spicy" flavor. "Hot and Spicy" comes in a red can and has the "Tabasco" brand hot sauce mixed into the Spam. By far the two best flavors of Spam, "Hot and Spicy" and "Jalapeno"..

    Deep fried spam... rice... and a sunny side up egg with a runny yolk. You take a bit of your rice, pile on some crispy spam, then dip the mix into some runny yolk, then taste the flavor explosion! Rice being naturally bland balances out the salty spam, absorbs the extra grease from the frying pan and the yolk just adds a creamy texture which balances out perfectly with the hard grained rice and chewy spam. Something so simple... yet tasty, A classic fusion Asian breakfast. I miss my childhood.

Some recipes I haven't tried yet, but am planning to: deviled spam, spam marinated in gochujang then fried and served with rice, loaded baked potato with spam, spam ramen (because of spam's saltiness I'll be making broth instead of using the packet). Good luck using everything up!

    I like the low sodium spam on occasion, like when camping, fried up in a cast iron skillet, and then with maple syrup drizzled over it. Reminds me of when I was a kid and my family camped!

    spam musubi is a favorite and usually the only way ill eat it. sometimes ill get a craving though and fry it up diced with scrambled eggs or rice/stir fry. think ive only put it in a sandwich once (still fried though, i havent even tried it straight from the can).

    I like the hickory smoke Spam and bacon flavor Spam in a cold pasta salad with pasta, tomatoes, cheese cubes, Spam, spinac, cucumber slices and salad dressing. I don't add salt. I make a huge batch during summer when it's too hot to cook.

    I just recently tried spam after being averse to it. I always remember it having a sort of jellied slime on it, but it's much nicer than I remembered. It wasn't so bad. i think the best use for it would be diced up in a hash of scrambled eggs and/or fried potatoes.

    as someone from the land of spam (MN) id say most people here (at least those that I know and met) don't care for it. I personally love it. it's such a versatile ingredient and it goes extremely well with many Asian cuisine.
