Restoration Of An 80's Icon - Honda CR-X - Part 9

- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- Well its the one you've been waiting for ... the reveal of the engine and fitting of it and its a jumbo length episode just like i promised. So as you've probably worked out already from the thumbnails I've decided to swap out the original D15 engine for this nice twin cam D16 . I know a lot of you will be a little upset with me for not going down the B16, B18 or K20 engine swap route but sadly as I explain over on my patreon page going down the VTEC route would blow my budget but the D16 makes it torque way lower down the rev range so for my driving style its a perfect swap. I cover a lot of ground in this video , stripping the engine, gasket replacement, zinc plating, powder coating, painting etc etc so there's something for everyone to enjoy and with that I'll let you crack on with watching the episode please feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think of it.

Hello. I have come to the conclusion that asking questions only shows how much a a gear head I am NOT! So, I will continue to watch and learn from you with every video! This motor , you really lucked out on, and it looks amazing! Stay healthy my friend! bob and Teresa
I'm a tad disappointed that you didn't replace the valve seals and springs. over the years they get hard (seals) and weak (springs) over the years.
Please link share kare
I have a bike that I don't want to throw away, how can you help me, or can you take it? Suzuki 250.
Am I the only one who absolutely cracked up when he released the hand brake and checked the car was in natural to move the car at the start, that my friend is comedy gold!
Thank you so much, I just couldn't resist putting that scene in ;)
@ glad you did still chuckling to myself now keep up the good work
I got a laugh out of that too 😂
Came to comment exactly this. 😂
You may have slightly overreacted?
A contribution to assist in offsetting the cost of the new rims and the entire restoration. Cheers🥃
You really are too kind my friend, your support really is out of this world and I thank you for it. Cheers 🥃
@@RRCRestoration I have a Suzuki v-strom(DL 250), my first bid bike, it needs some work. It's a category-N in Glasgow. Can you please help me?
There are two types of people in this world; Those who admit to using a chrome socket on an impact, and dirty liars! Keep up the great work amigo!
Love it :)
exactly, and honestly, I've never had one break. The only time I've gotten anywhere near worried was while using a chromed socket as a drift on the press >:)
22 years as a mechanic a never break a single chrome socket on impact ,you know when to use the impact.ones
I have broken a chrome socket with a hand ratchet.
Bloomin reverse thread bolts!
im a mechanic who lives under a rock, why no chrome on uggur duggur?
No need to keep apologizing for your engine choice. It's going to be amazing in that chassis. Less weight than a B Series...no VTEC wiring to add...makes perfect sense to me. Loved the episode and they can never be too long!
Thanks very much for leaving that comment, Im glad to hear you agree with my choice :)
Great choice on engine too, at the end of the day, cost will be a main factor every single time, you might even have a little left over for a small turbo in the future, for even more fun :) Cheers from Australia mate, I lived in Edinburgh for almost 2 years as well :)
Fully agree it's basically a zc 👏
I agree plus the instant torque from the single stage cams why more fun ,awesome choice
Even when new various UK testers suggested the i-Vt wasn't worth the price premium over the std DOHC - unless you could consistently keep them over 6k, rarely an option in normal use. Added weight penalty of standard ALB didn't help either, exaggerating impression of less low-end torque. Not easy to get off-the line quickly without really trying... So I went back to my lazy torque of 80hp '79 Accord hatchback for daily traffic & left the SiR in the garage, though Mum upped it's mileage for me.
Looking forward to trying lighter D16 DOHC in another less highly optioned CR-X to accompany it.
Have we just been BLESSED WITH an HOUR of ULTRA-QUALITY RRC restoration of an
entire engine?! AWWWW YEAH BABY!!!!!
I hope you enjoyed every minute of it :)
Honestly this is one of those "must watch, never miss" type channels/series. The quality of the workmanship is outstanding, as are the videos, another key ingredient is the David Coulthard/Leigh Mckenzie type accent its warm and relaxing whilst being authoritative on the subject at hand.
Thank you so much, Im really glad you like my work ... and accent lol
This video promises to be a MILLION times better than Jerk Porl vs Mike Tyson.
Yeah most videos are
Haha love it!
@@RRCRestoration Yes, but the fight was fixed more than this car
It's Fake Paul.
😂😂😂😂
Getting the CRX out of the booth, proceeds to release the handbreak and setting the gear in free. Love the details 😄 0:22
Im glad you like that :)
56:24 nope, not long enough 😂
Agreed. I got to about 44:13 when the new exhaust manifold was being fitted, and thought 'darn', I'm going to have to wait for start-up 😂
Need more
You hit the spot with that engine. Enough power, and cheaper. I love your videos. Every single project is awesome. Keep it going!
Thank you so much, I'm really glad you see my logic on the engine choice :)
I'm enamored with old school period correct stuff. B series and what we call a ZC, and even the old single cam slammer D16a6.
And bullet proof
Yeah I'm swapping a near brand new b20z2 into my 89 dx. Gonna keep it all stock. Clean B series engines are so rare now i want to make it last as long as possible
I know i shouldn't be, but every episode i watch im still amazed by the quality of the build project and not forgetting the editing. 😊
Wow, thank you! :)
I feel the same. Blown away every video. A jack of all trades, master of all. And I love the finger snap edits too!
I’m a carpenter of over 30 years at this point, and have a fair amount of mechanical knowledge on tearing things down and putting them together, but the sheer amount of knowledge for stripping this car down and restoring it always humbles me. Like this is a huge amount of knowhow on one single car from the 80s, how do they keep all that info in their heads, let alone other cars? What a blast to see it in action.
Thank you for taking the time to write that comment :)
I am amazed and completely blown away by every episode. The talent you have and doing everything by yourself is inspirational. Keep these videos coming. Thank you
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave a kind comment :)
Is anybody else like me and looked at that engine and thought, you are in for a treat girl. You’ll be looking like brand new very soon 😊
You know things are getting serious when the toolbox gets moved closer! can't wait to see the polished gem this is about to become!
haha very true statement, enjoy :)
NGL, I love that you baited everyone with the red valve cover last episode. It's hard to go wrong with any Honda engine, and I'm glad it's the not stereotypical K swap.
Haha yeah I t was a little cruel of me to deceive you all like that.
Please Mr RRC, I'm sure that i am not the only one to want to see your complete setup via a workshop tour. Your tools and equipment are amazing and the premises seem perfect for what you do. Would love to see it all some day
Thank you, maybe one day soon ;)
Must be, please. I'm another one looking for the rest either.
Loved it, the engine needed that beautiful exhaust manifold. Always been impressed with the fact that you’ve never needed anything other than the prototype oven, the powder coating always looks fantastic. As ever great work and editing.
Thank you Im glad you liked it. the prototype oven has performed way beyond my expectations hence the reason Ive not upgraded it yet but there are a couple of things i'd like to do like add a window, digital temp readout maybe a circulation fan for more even heating.
Thanks. And great editing. When you leave the boot in painting overall, and enters the workshop seamlessly in dungarees.
Impressive work and filming!
Thank you Im glad you like it :)
Am I the only one who was still rivited to the video whilst he was putting tools away 🤣🤣 so that's how you do it 😋
I bow down to your skills and talent, along with your work ethic. This is coming out like all of your restorations, fantastic!
Thank you so much for that very kind comment :)
54:44 Okay, this is pure magic right here. The way he aligns this so perfectly and effortlessly is revealing of just how much experience this man has. Absolute respect. I would never be able to accomplish something this precise on the first try and I'm certain its much more challenging than it appears on camera.
You’re truly a master at your work and I love the way the new engine turned out. I could’ve watched another hour and really enjoyed your workmanship. Great stuff and looking forward to seeing the next one.
Thank you so much for that kind comment :)
I have to comment on this. I usually wouldn't, but this is worth it. I'm really glad I showed up when i did because the car is almost done, and I got to see it all happen quickly.
What really blows my mind is patience and craftsmanship. I've tried rebuilding (not restoring) a car from the ground up (I was 18 mind you), and it was a heck of a time. I love a CRX, and I'm happy to see you save one, but when I first saw this car, I thought to myself, it's probably doable, but I don't know if I would bother with it. You surprised me and amazed me with all of the work and detail put into it. Body work to mechanical work, I'm blown away. If I decide to have a car restored, I want you to do it.
And I'm glad you manual swapped it. That was my second thought in the earlier videos, aha. Very nice work, man. I can't wait for the next installment. If I could leave a contribution, I would.
This is so much work done in just one video that could have easily been 3-4 parts and I appreciate that!
Thank you :)
Another belter. My friend had one back in the late 80s and used to squeeze four of us in it to the pub. Happy days 😊
i am taking a break from work(get paid for it) and watching the maestro tell a story on how to do things right ( and not getting paid for it) :).. thank you maestro for letting the world know in the value of doing things right...
Thank you so much my friend for another very kind comment , Enjoy the video :)
D16a9 by far the best non VTEC engine of the era , brilliant little lumps and perform way way better than the book power figures would suggest , stunning workmanship as usual 👌
That you keep track of all the wires, hoses, special components and small parts in an entire car is amazing. How do you do it? A wonderful restoration channel by a real gentleman. Subscribed.
Thank you so much for subscribing :) Its just years of working on cars and bikes and of course lots of notes and pictures lol
I do resto's myself and its amazing to see the amount of effort you put in your projects
Thank you so much ,really glad to hear you enjoy my work :)
@RRCRestoration it's great to see how that tiny little 130hp engine cleaned up
Im working an engine project and the engine im working on is around the size of the crx
I hope this gets Honda's attention and they extend a partnership your way. If you can do a project like this independently, I can't even imagine what you could do with a brand backing. Kudos to you, sir!
I'm building a B20 VTEC on my own channel, and can confirm that B Series builds do indeed cost a lot more! I love your content mate, always eagerly awaiting the next vid. Your attention to detail and quality of your work are an inspiration ✊
Thanks for the comment, I'll pop over to have a look at your channel ;)
Lets be honest everything Honda isn't cheap.. The money I've spent on parts for my EK9 is horrifying
@@RRCRestoration How nice of you mate, thank you ✊
@@lewiscurrie8719 Haha yeah, facts!
Excellent choice on the engine, donorcar was a rover right? I wish mine had the power steering, but a8 lumps are scarse in my region. Let alone the a/c unit.
Man, after rebuilding a handful of big V8's in the past few years, I can really admire the elegant simplicity of a Honda 4 cyl. Has me tempted to change my displacement loving ways.
Your proficiency with so many different tools (and in so many different mechanical areas) is mesmerizing
I had the exact same thought about the chrome socket on the impact! The internet will always have an opinion!
Was so glad you put a nice set of headers on there. Fantastic resto work mate!
Being a bike guy I wasn’t sure I’d be interested in this project, but it has been great, keep up the good work.
Nice, I'm so glad you like it :)
Not only is the level of work of the highest order but the camera angle changes and editing are superb. Everything must take 2x longer to get done with the thought that goes into it all
Imagine the effect of such a video on a guy like me who can barrely check his tyres pressure 🤩
it should inspire you to do more :)
lol @ 9:33. I was thinking "well at least he's using an adapter instead of just jamming it on". Your attention to detail is second to none. I am absolutely in love with this series.
haha love it. Im really glad to hear that you a re enjoying the series :)
Looking great, excellent attention to detail, going to be better than new! Top stuff 👍
Thank you so much :)
I used to work for Honda in the 00’s and I loved the build quality of them. They fell apart and went back together so well.
Love your video's dude! I know the proces of doing this on a car and many will never understand the amount of time and perseverence this takes! Keep on doing this good stuff, you're vids always take me to a calm place in my head. 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
Stellar work as always. Everything being done to the highest standard is just fuel for the soul.
This series inspired me to make a proper workshop out of my garage and undertake a project like this on one of my own cars. It'll be tons of work but the reward will be out of this world.
Nice I'm really glad i could inspire you, good luck with your project :)
Love this series man! Phenomenal job! Very inspiring.
Thanks so much :)
I'm always amazed by your organised working there seems no other half finished projects lying around unlike most of us would be. Engine looks fabulous and that exhaust manifold is a work of art.
Thank you, yeah I hate having stuff lying all around me so I only take on one job at a time... its a blessing and a curse lol
I agree with your decision to put in a D series engine, since that's what it came with. That's a true restoration !
How is this a D16? It’s a B16
@wojiaobill Thank you very much I'm really glad to hear you approve of my engine choice :)
Very impressiv.
Your attention to detail, craftmanship and camera work. You can follow every step and it never gets boring. Thanks man.
great job. its good to see someone doing things thoroughly and properly instead of most of the hacks on yt. keep it going, get another bike done after this one....please
Thank you so much I'm glad you enjoy my work :), More bikes coming very soon ;)
This channel is amazing. Somehow this gentleman has managed to fit three lifetimes of experience and know how into one and is gladly sharing it with us one video at a time.
Attendance check! 😅😅😅
Beautiful job well done.
Kudos to honda engineer's for making things so straightforward.
Excellent job looking forward to seeing the next video..
An excellent and logical decision. Honestly, everyone shove b18 or k20 in every car. This engine is completely enough 👌👌
Thank you so much, I'm glad you agree with me :)
Yes! Love the engine pick!! In the states we got the single overhead cam, I had a buddy do the “mini me” swap. You put the head from and 92-95 ex on it and get the single cam vtec and a little more compression. Thing was fast.
I've had the car twice in my life with this exact engine, also in black. super light, absolutely great car. I'm looking forward to hear the sound with the manifold and header. You do such a great job!
Im so glad that you enjoy my work and are looking forward to the next episode :)
I'll definitely be here for the next episode. Sticking with this powerplant combo is a good deal. This car will bring you years of joy, no doubt! Another excellent episode!
Leaving my support after watching quite a few so far, thanks for the content, something I really enjoy. Alessandro.
Thank you so much for your kind donation its very much appreciated :)
The rebuild is coming along very nicely, and that engine looks stellar! Many kids have tried to make a Honda engine look good, but you have succeeded.
That was a lot of work! We're looking forward to hearing it fire up and drive!
you know honestly I've never said this before on your previous videos, but you're awesome. Doing this all on your own with no other help just pure love for what you do, most people would just replace certain components like the starter and motor mounts because it's easier to deal with. When you say full restoration you mean it.
Also I laughed my ass off on the RRC brand super ultra lethal paint stripper
Your workmanship and attention to detail is OUTSTANDING
Thank you so much :)
I have always loved this model. I can't wait to see it completely restored and on the road again! Love the engine upgrade and it looks awesome sitting in there looking brand new.
Thank you very much!
Well done!! I think this engine will be excellent - makes it unique among all the B and K powered CRX's out there!
Thank you for the video!
That looks absolutely amazing, I have fond memories of a holiday in Skeg that involved a CRX, good times. Great work, thank you for showing us.
Engine looks absolutely amazing. Thoroughly enjoying this series. Going to look back at previous builds during the interim between these videos.
that engine masking was crazy hats off to you sir.
Your level of detail and execution is inspiring. It also shows how well your shop space is setup for work flow! Love it
Thank you so much, I'm glad you like it :)
I'm so glad I found your channel years ago. You have been a inspiration and a mentor to so many people. Your skills are Legendary and you humor is as well.
That's a crazy amount of progress! The engine looks brand new!
It'll have more than enough kick for its little size.
The wiring.. super brave to be tackling that!
Thank you so much, I cant wait to drive it as I think its going to be so much fun :)
@@RRCRestoration For sure! It'll be a tiny rocket! 🙂
You really did another fantastic job with this video, providing both entertainment and knowledge. You're the best, and I wish only better days ahead in the future!
Love from Greece.
This was my first car when I was 16, and this series has been a joy!
Thank you I'm glad you are enjoying it :)
That engine rebuild looked amazing so good to see the attention to detail
The most impressive thing for me? Getting the engine and trans back in the car... by yourself. Without damaging anything. Bravo!
Absolutely amazing work!!! As always! I know you mentioned that your roads may already have salt on them. I’m hoping you wait for a day when the roads are dry to conduct your first test drive. As to the rims to choose. I will leave that choice to you. I know you have great taste when it comes to such things. To help with the cost of the restoration please allow me to chip in a few US dollars to offset your cost. Cheers my friend 🥃
The fact you didn't split this into a 6 part video is crazy. Thanks for the great content.
Saw this got uploaded and heard you were doing the engine. Out loud I said YES! A k20 would have been cool. But everyone is doing that. Good engine choice, will keep it pure and fun!
I absolutely love the way you work. From the plating to the complete engine refresh. Your build is so high level, no stone left unturned.
I'm also a mechanic and am currently rebuild one of my car's. And try to do everything as clean and perfect as i can. Just like you. So seeing this video was a great motivator 🙏.
Best of luck with the build and the channel. I love it 👊
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
Wonderful video of a methodical engine build without the constant use of a rattle gun. Pleasure to watch. Thanks
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it :)
Thanks
Thank you so much for your generosity :)
Releasing the park brake and making sure it's in neutral before moving the rotisserie? Amazing. Thanks for the giggle 😂
Having restored and modified lawnmowers, motorcycles, cars, boat outboard and inboard engines, I really enjoy your videos. Also, I did spot that you had painted the sump pan. So, obviously changed the leaking gasket. Please keep sharing your work and ideas.
Thank you i see you like to dabble in everything mechanical the same as myself lol yup , the gasket has been changed ;)
Hands down one of the most underrated YT channels out there. Love the vids man, truly.
Thank you so much :)
Wonderful detail and restoration, editing is very good too. Amazing work ethic to undertake such a carefully planned project. Using a chrome socket with an impact is fine on a lot of less highly torqued bolts and of course the man restorating the civic is very aware of this. The Scottish accent is a lovely sound for the ears.👍
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
Thanks!
Thank you so much for your generosity my friend :)
This is the best restoration series I've ever seen! I smile every time I see a new episode!
Oooh, she's turning into a thing of beauty! That engine looks great! I'm really enjoying this build. Always look forward to the next episode. Keep up the good work 👍
Thanks very much :)
Wow. This is truly amazing to watch and I am excited for the final episode. Thank you from an owner who once had a Black 1986 CRX Si when I was a lad!
Thank you, Im really glad you like it :)
Another hour of complete enjoyment.
You, like all good tradespeople {if that's the correct terminology), make it look so simple.
I am envious of that beeping torque wrench. But torquing stuff on my old suzuki bikes, the traditional "a few grunts and a fart" method seems to work fine, and is a lot cheaper. And thank you for not talking all the time, but only when needed. It plays right into my finnish sensibilities. There is almost a zen-like feeling watching you work.
"a few grunts and a fart" thats all im going to think about when i torque stuff now haha. Im really glad you enjoy my videos and work :)
Great video RCC restoration, top notch work and craftsmanship, car looks amazing, looking forward to watching the next one 👌👍😀
Thank you so much for your kind comment :)
Always a pleasure to see a RCC restoration video pop up in my feed. One of my go to channels for this type of stuff. 🙂 Hello from Ireland BTW!
Thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment :)
That wiring harness... I would bring my best procrastinating skills to bear on that one.
Longer episode, but perfect length for the wonderful technical content. Thanks!!!
That engine is so mint my breath is fresh after watching!
Love it! :)
I will never repair a car but I'm still interested by your videos. Very impressed with your explanations and the work done. 👍
Thank you im glad you liked it :)
Absolute gold. That engine with those exhaust headers looks amazing - almost race ready, ha! Beautiful work!
Thank you so much my friend :)
Putting the handbrake down and checking neutral got me when you rolled the shell out of the booth. Had to rewind and make sure I saw that right, good laugh.
haha thanks Im really glad you enjoyed it :)
Amazing work. An amazing eye for detail. No rush. You are clearly enjoying the process.
Thank you :)
Must be an amazing feeling to get to this stage. Cannot wait for the next one, please say it's a super long episode again!!!
This restoration is astonishingly good. Car repair but dialled up to eleven.
