I'm a senior citizen (over 65), and to be honest, I like very few groups from the 90s on. The Offspring is the exception. They're the complete package. Dexter's killer vocals, kick-ass instrumentals, perfect melodies, and above all, hard-hitting, honest, down-to-Earth lyrics. They're not whining, they're not bitching, they're just telling you how it is. Every album is pure gold, and I always travel with at least half a dozen Offspring CDs in my truck.
This is without doubt my favourite punk song of all time. I remember excitedly buying this album on release. I’m now 39 and still listen to this album. This song though has everything. Fast drums, rocking guitars and lyrics about making your own way in life. How can you top that? Oh yeah, don’t make it too long! Perfect
It's a fantastic song no doubt, one of my favorites ever. I'm more of a metal guy, but I love this band, and this song has such an edge to it, I love the lyrics, and the band sounds very tight.
It's a shame people bitch about them all the time these days. People have forgotten what these guys have done with music over the years. Some really fine stuff indeed.
Hola amigo I hope you find it. Each individual has a different interpretation. For myself it is just a super mega awesome experience no matter how difficult it can be. Smile share/show kindness and enjoy your time. It is in all reality short
reading a lot here from people who say the lyrics of that song describe their teenage years, but for me it seems the older I get, the more relevant those lyrics become for me
That’s the beauty and power of The Offspring. They were ahead of their time with their song writing. They knew how the next generation would turn out.. yet kept it real in the 90s.
The power of the offspring burns bright in this one. What a way to kick the album off after 'the disclaimer' he ha. This band have never failed to provoke the most energy in me. Eternally grateful for that! X
when music was music. Sucks to say im 28 and the new generation will never know what it was to growup listening to Americana and albums like this. Hopefully someday someone will stumble across this comment 20 years from now and say wow music has changed lol
Still an awesome song in 2023 ! My favorite song by Offspring. 🤘 55 years young and still rocking this hard doing this and Kids aren't all Right vocals and guitar in my band here in the Philippines. People love it! 🇺🇲
I remember being in 6th grade hearing this album for the first time on cassette and then seeing the music video on mtv. Back when mtv played music. Than seeing it pop up in skate and motocross videos. Oh the memories of the good ol days
What happened to you guys? Ignition, Smash, Ixnay, Americana, Conspiracy of one...maybe Splinter... and then... lol I know it is too late to change again so I will keep listening your old songs, the one's that made my feel alive. That song was awesome by the way...;)
This band reserved a place deep in my heart. I remember when my school friend gave me my first Offspring (Americana)Album from his elder brother at the age of 8. Unforgotten.....
Most of my favourite bands were melodic punk bands with intricacy to the tunes - Strung out, NUFAN, Unwritten Law, Silverstein, etc. The awesome thing about Offspring is that their tunes are so good lyrically, so catchy, unique and iconic that they don't need to be complex. Dexters distinctive voice and some crunchy power chords are all that's been needed for them to enter the pantheon of great bands born out of the 90s punk era.
The offspring have a culture of their own, the surf and skating. I always listen to dirty magic when I go surfing I love the California lifestyle that they portray so awesome. I love the offspring from when I was 14 till now 30 I think the song the kids aren't alright is like an anthem for what is happen to society. I'm not sure how
I remember in the UK at the time. I was drowning in endless Britpop and Spice Girls, this ablum was a real saviour, such a breath of fresh air. I still have the chills down my back listening to these tracks as I did when I put Inxay in my cassette walkman for the first time over a quarter of a century ago.
I feel like this song suits me well, due to it being fast-paced and aggressive. But mostly because I'm at times told how to act, what to do, and what to like. But another way I interpreted it is that people should live the way they want as long as no harm is being done. The Offspring as a whole have taught me to flip the finger to those kind of people. Seriously, I've gotta thank these guys if I ever get the chance to meet them!
I always take from this song, and video., Never give up, Never give in, Never quit. No matter what life throws at you. Live life on your own terms. And have been since '97. Rock on, Offspring, Rock on.
For me, THE best Offsprings song. Fight me, or just listen to this finest piece of art which is really special. It's cleaning up my twisted or stucked mind no matter if I'm super happy cause riding long way home for Christmas nor when I'm confused, sad and depressed when everything around is phuckin up although I'm trying to do my best. Pure three minutes of magic. Thanks guys.

First Punk song I ever heard, I was 11. My life changed that very moment, and in my late 30's now the only constant in my life still is Punk. Do what you want, deal with the crap and don't give a sh*t what everyone else thinks. If your life is different from what everyone expects, hooray for you
I love this song. I always liked the lyrics, but just giving it a listen after not hearing it for a while, the lyrics are REALLY resonating with me right now!
My older brother got this album when it came out, I was hooked and copied it on tape.True beginning of my punk years, and the start of the years of worry for my mother haha. Soon I would become hooked to hardcore and still am till this day. But about this song/the Offspring: We went 3days camping with school at age 12 and my father drove 5 of us. Smash and Xnay on the A&B sides of my tape and he played both sides on the way over there. I couldn't feel more happy and proud that he didn't throw it out. Just told him this story, 18 fckn years ago already, and he remembered as well. Oh yes, Annemarie was the girl we all were in love with hahaha! It's nice to still have a connection with a song, still find yourself in its lyrics and also think about one of my role models, all in the same song. Keep truckin' y'all!
same bro, but idk how many tape that my brother have. Because at 2004 he buy phone that can play music like Nokia N-Gage, and his tape collection are abandoned since that edit : sorry for my bad English
I think this song and “All I want” were the top 2 songs of this album. And of course gone away was a great one but these 2 just make me feel like a punk 🤟
I'm gonna share a funny story from my childhood. Back in 1997 my friend and I were rollerskating and listening to Offspring. We ate shitloads of candy and just had these walkmans with Offspring recorded on tape. I didn't like them as much as my friend did. I was into this eurodance stuff and he always mocked me for listening to Captain Jack, Daze and Sash! Now almost 20 years later I always return to listen to Offspring because their music just kicks ass. Ixnay on the Humbre is my favourite album. I guess my friend had a better musical taste when we were kids... ;)
+thegame890 Hi there, i was also same kid in same situation in 97 expect i could have been your friend.. And let me tell you that this still kick`s ass so like wine time only make`s it better ;)
Oh I'm sorry! Did I hurt your feelings? Maybe I should have left the word "funny" out of my previous comment so that people would not misunderstand my story... :) :) :)
My friend would always play this album when we played RISK at his house. I was barely into punk music, but this album, and especially this song, completely changed my tastes and inspired me to pick up guitar. 20 years later, I'm still playing the fuck out of my guitar; I'm more into heavy metal these days, but Offspring is still close to my heart.
this song has a lot of meanings for me. Religion: You can't tell me how to live my life with god. He does HIm, I do me. As he intended so excuse me if it bothers you. All because THEY think you are done doesn't mean YOU should feel that way too. Push away those who try to control your life through their experiences. Nothing is absolute. When I was a teenager I didn't understand a lot of the lyrics. But now I relate completely

My fave Offspring song. Really was the perfect kick-off for Ixnay.
The bass line is killer in this song
Definitely in their Top 5 songs. The whole of Ignition, Smash and most of Ixnay are perfection in punk. The sound captures the era.
Offspring are the masters of having random awesome stuff in their music videos!
One of the most underrated song of his band
21 years of kickin' ass. The O-Dudes were one for all time.
