  • As some of you may have been aware, Bumi the yellow tailed black I hand reared (you can see his baby videos in playlists on channel) is now officially in the free flight game! This was no random decision, Bumi’s owner has been doing intensive work 5-6 days a week training on the down low to undo the impacts the harness training has had on him, and start building his free flight skills for well over 1 year now. (Harness training can be severely detrimental to free flight training if used in certain developmental stages)
    Worth pointing out though, due to Bumi's unique circumstances preventing free flight training in early development, the introduction of the harness was a significant positive as it allowed him to leave indoors and experience so much more of the open world outdoors. This was a defining moment for Bumi and brought about significant change! It meant that Bumi got excited to see the harness as it meant outside fun time! Bumi was in a situation where the harness brought him happiness, even if it meant extra work for mum in the end we are all still thankful he was able to come out at all, especially now he is part of the crew!
    -
    Bumi is still finding his wings but after progressing slowly for the last year this is now the end result, in this video you will see his first official free flight. I cannot stress the IMPORTANCE of this was a Direct result of almost daily intensive training from Bumi's owner and mentor for over a year... it was a lot of blood sweat and tears for Bumi’s owner to get to this point where there was confidence he had now developed the skills to be outdoors to have his first big flight.
    Again, this was NOT a random accident nor decision to take off his harness, this was planned for a whole year and only if all milestones were met.
    -
    We were all shocked at how well Bumi did, he was confident in his flight and mastered trees within minutes, down for cuddles with mum in no time then it was important to physically put him back in the tree to play.
    We are big believers in allowing birds to be birds by playing in trees, it’s also a crucial skill in the event of danger and or navigation.
    -
    We are proud to announce Bumi is Australia’s first free flight yellow tailed black cockatoo! Even more proud of the dedication and sheer amount of time & effort Bumi's owner has invested, words cannot even describe the lengths she has gone to simply to ensure his success. So hats off to her!
    We hope to see him progress in skill & confidence. Many more videos to come! 😁

    This is so incredibly exciting! When he flew to the post and back, I couldn't figure out what was going on I kept reminding myself that she took him out of the cage without a harness. And then when he flew off and flew higher, I started panicking. And then watch the video, my smile got bigger. This is just an incredibly awesome thing to see. Way to go, Bumi and Lauren!

    Aaah i'm so happy! Now Bumi can finally fly like he should. I know he will be very happy with it too now he can excersise properly.
    It almost feels extra special as i've been following the free-flight club for a while now, getting to watch all the good and the bad and growing attached to the birds haha.
    Props to you guys! For the care and effort you put into your birds. Definetly deserving of a medal in my opinion. 👍

    You should use a falconry tracker, parrots feathers are strong enough to bear them.

    It's so rare to see yellow-tails as pets (even rare in aviary/breeding situations) - can I ask you what they are like? Noise, diet, temperament - perhaps compared to the white cockatoos?
    I really love these on the surface, but I don't know anything about what they're like as pets, and they obviously cost a minor fortune (some €5k+ in Europe).

    • @andrewp4075
      @andrewp4075 3 роки тому

      @Wattle and Frida, of course they are available outside Australia. The prices are very high and they are not frequently available. Find the breeders and meet their birds in person first before deciding to buy.

    • @andrewp4075
      @andrewp4075 3 роки тому

      @Wattle you misrepresent the owners of these birds overseas. They are not kept illegally in these countries and they were either exported from Australia legally before legislation to ban it or subsequently bred outside Australia legally from pre-existing pairs.

    Arent you afraid of predators? Raptors?
    I live in Arizona in the US and i have to keep all my birds(chickens, ducks, geese)
    In a very secure place.
    But we have a couple big hawks that watch and some smaller Raptors. Plus owls.

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 років тому +1

      we live in australia so theres for more raptors here, there was probably like 5 in this video along flying around. it takes very specific factors to be at play for parrots to be vulnerable and at risk of predation and even more specific factors for a raptor to be a threat.
      Much like a shark, sharks are in the water with people over 80% of the time that doesn't mean your going to get attacked.
      if you go to the bottom of www.adventuresofroku.com/Educational.php its explained in more detail what these factors are :)

    • @jaskiaz
      @jaskiaz 6 років тому

      Adventures of Roku
      I did not know that.
      But i knew you have many more birds of prey there than here. We have just the usual pair that hang around.
      I think of my silly and totally unaware blue fronted Amazon flying around, she would be fair game i would think.
      But thanks for the info, and i thoroughly enjoyed watching your beautiful birds😊

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 років тому

      haha yeah what is safe for our birds is extremely high risk for pet indoor birds. predators pick up on the key signs and then dynamics change and danger is real. I explain it more in the link. so glad you like the vids! :)

    Its gotta be nerve wracking when the bastards ignore you and fly a liitle too long and a little too far and kinda just fly around and give you the middle as your trying to get them to come back. Im assuming they do that once in a while.

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 років тому

      mainly only for owners who dont have the correct training or knowledge. If you treat them look a boomerang and try enforce control when free flight is about partnership then yes those owners are rightfully in for a stressful time.
      I only need to call mine back when its home time like many other trainers, I personally dont want them hanging off me when we are out. its good to have a break for them and me lol

    • @jiveturkey9993
      @jiveturkey9993 6 років тому

      Adventures of Roku i kinda figured since they're so smart they would have a disobedient streak in them. Im glad im wrong.

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 років тому +1

      ohhh your 100% correct dont worry, thats what im talking about. Owners without the correct knowledge or training do not take into account the intelligence of a parrot and try to assume a master and subject relationship with control, then try get them to do unnatural acts of flying loops and back to them constantly.
      You have instinctual drift, a point where the parrot eventually thinks.... why am I even doing this? theres no restriction ill go do what I want for now as the need to come back is lesser then the want to play and explore.
      I see this occurring on the regular and I just dont have the energy to say anything anymore, its why I provide all the info on the website, if people lack the initiative to read it then thats on them. Free flight is and should always be a mutual partnership, the moment someone tries to assume control over a free flighted bird outdoors is the moment the relationship starts to get damaged.

    How do you get your birds to be so cudley

    • @AdventuresofRoku
      @AdventuresofRoku  6 років тому

      you have to earn their trust and love :) knowing how to read their body language and only working in their comfort level is key. :)
