Believe it or not I do put some preparation and research into my videos. Sometimes it’s nice to stumble across things. Journey from Antwerpen Centraal to Brussels Midi was just one of those moments. Antwerp Central is simply the most beautiful railway station I’ve had the pleasure of visiting. Not just a means of getting people from A to B, it’s a destination. A work of art. Antwerp Centraal is a place for rail enthusiasts to visit.
The current terminal station building was constructed between 1895 and 1905. The building was designed by the architect Louis Delacenserie.
The station is widely regarded as the finest example of railway architecture in Belgium. I agree! Owing to the vast dome above the waiting room hall, the building became colloquially known as the spoorwegkathedraal ("railroad cathedral").
The originally iron and glass train hall was designed by Clément Van Bogaert, an engineer, and covers an area of 12,000 square metres. The height of the station was necessary for dissipating the smoke of steam locomotives. In 2009, the American magazine Newsweek judged Antwerpen-Centraal the world's fourth greatest train station. In 2014, the magazine Mashable awarded Antwerpen-Centraal the first place for the most beautiful railway station in the world.

that kid screaming in the station... its almost as if you dubbed it over to make the station sound bigger with an echo! 🤣 The stairs remind me very much of Grand Central Station in NYC.... The cheesy "lift" music for the escalator has to be my favourite bit! Thanks Tim!
Cheers mate! I’m glad you realised it was a kid screaming and not me. 🤣
@@Timstravels01 😄 🤣 I thought you were trying to make your video more 'arty'
Loved the escalators and the video and the sleepy music and the escalators and oh yes….the escalators 👍
Thank you! The escalators were good too. 😂
Fantastic stuff! Sitting watching this on a train from Gothenburg to Stockholm :)
Oh lovely! I'll look forward to watching that one.
For such an amazing station, how on earth have I never heard or seen it before!! Another cracking video :) my favourite station I recently seen was Rogart Station on Far North Line, just gorgeous. Least favourite had to be Luton for the airport
I had never heard about it either, I was just overwhelmed by how beautiful it is. Rogart is a wee gem alright.
You already know (from Instagram) what I think of this station, and video doesn't disappoint. Like St Pancras, yes, but with (literally) that added depth of the through platforms in the basement. I'm so glad Fi enjoyed it, too.
We had a super time exploring. It was just a fabulous experience.
This video has it all , 'wow' at the stations architecture, laugh at you both on the escalators, cry at the sad stations (egged on by the sad music !) ,and 'recoil' at the lack of water on Fi's hands to rinse after the soap dispenser ! keep them coming
I’m expecting an Oscar nomination for this one. Thanks for your support my friend.
Very impressive station that - loved the escalators. Good choice of music for the journey - bleak. Cheers Tim, keep it up mate 😊
Thanks mate. Bleak is the word. Not one of the world’s more scenic rail journeys but Antwerp station - incredible.
It's a beautiful station, and well made video - thanks!
Thank you so much. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Wow, that’s really the most amazing !!!
It is an incredible place. I could have stayed there for hours.
Hello guys! 👋 Just stumbled across your channel - how exciting to see a couple of familiar faces!😅 Fiona's enthusiasm for the awesomeness of the escalators made me giggle! 😂 Happy travels! 🚆
Thank you so much! We had a great time in Belgium. We discovered there's so much more to it than the escalators - although they were mighty impressive! 😂
beautiful looking station, could spend a while in there just looking around. haven't got a favorite station yet but I'll have to keep an eye out now.
You’ve got a mission. Keep me posted.
This may be my favourite of all your videos so far. I have been on escalators like that before but I cant remember where. Antwerp clearly was a stunning station.
I think my favourite station might just be York (and I have been to Grand Central in NY, and a couple of the big Stations in Delhi). My least favourite is Lymington Pier as it feels very unloved by South Western Railway currently and the timetable is so poorly aligned with ferry services these days.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Grand Central is a cracking station and I’m jealous that you’ve visited India! York station is a beauty. There’s so much going on and it has the York Tap!
The nicest station i ve ever visited is Antwerpen-Centraal ;) I used to have an appartment with view at station and the zoo (which is next to the station)
What a location to have an apartment! Antwerpen Centraal is the finest railway station I've visited. It is stunning.
I enjoyed the video! At Schaarbeek, you just missed the National Railway Museum at the left side of the train. At Brussels Noord, you missed the poor red lights district near the station.
Mrs Tim's Travels made sure he missed the red lights district.
I’m always sitting on the side of the train where I miss everything! Thanks so much for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
🤣 absolutely!
Antwerp definitely has the most beautiful station in Belgium. Right next door is Antwerp zoo, which has buildings in a similar style.
I’d suggest Antwerp Centraal is possibly the most beautiful station in the world! We had a look around the Zoo too it was fabulous.
Antwerp central reminded me of St Pancras with its modern multi levels. I liked this quirky video, you’re right about the delights about stumbling across the unknown… I find Brussels interesting. How you can change language just by crossing the road. My favourite station looks wise is Glasgow central. I love the wooden buildings inside and the hotel built into the superstructure. I miss the twirly ramp that used to take you out onto the platforms where you could park your car. For me Glasgow central is best. It’s handsome. Through Antwerp is v pretty
Glasgow Central is right up there and St Pancras is pretty decent too. The wonders of travelling and exploring, you can’t beat it.
Lots of UK stations are contenders for my Least Favourite, mostly on the now retired Rochdale to Manchester Victoria line!
I still find Glasgow Central very stunning
You're right, Glasgow Central is a stunner. Is there one just outside Manchester Piccadilly that looks pretty forlorn?
Yes. Stretching my neurons but I think that's possibly Ardwick station 🤔
I think that’s it. Anytime I’ve passed I thought it needs a bit of TLC.
Escalator excitement.....😂😂 i would say you need to get out more but.......😊
I know, we’re simple folk. 😂😂😂
Wow
Agreed!
Hi
Hello!
This comment “Hi” is full of inspiration, it was hard effort to come up with “Hi” you know, :)
It was an inspiring ‘Hi’.
Where are you going next?… the question awaits…
Do a review on a Minecraft city >:) (in Minecraft (if you have ever played it (if you even own the game (if you even want to do that (if you even see this commaent (probably will))))))
So many bracket

Good question.
I continue to be amazed why British tourists always pick the French name for everything Belgian. That's like me going to the UK and stating everything in Welsh.
It’s because we’re ignorant. 😂
@@Timstravels01 We love you anyway. :)
Thanks mate. You’re very kind.
Why not? You know, even the German city of Cologne is referred to in English with its French name, not as "Köln". And why does (virtually) the whole world call Crna Gora by its Italian name, while it's a Slavic country? Yes, Crna Gora, doesn't that ring a bell? It's Montenegro. Time to wake up, mate, and learn about the concepts of endonym and exonym.
I did not know that about Montenegro. Thanks for the explanation.
Wow
I agree!
