    1. USE A CANE
(to decrease weight on the knee for a while to help decrease inflammation).
    2. GET MOVEMENT IN THE KNEE
(without weight bearing, eg. use an elliptical floor peddler).
    3. STRENGTHEN HIP & KNEE
(do strengthening exercises - as shown).

I am 53 years old. I have had a knee problem for 40 years: after 4 arthroscopic cartilage removals in my young age I no longer have any cartilage or knee ligaments on the left side, and doctors are already recommending a knee prosthesis. I started cycling 10 years ago and since that time my knee doesn't hurt at all. Doctors say I should already be in a wheelchair with my knees in this condition. I'm not going for prosthetic surgery. Regular knee-friendly exercises like yoga, callanetics, gentle long-distance cycling and cartilage-supporting nutrition and dietary supplements are sufficient.

I was wondering if you could help me as my knee feels like bone against bone. It only hurts if I bend it in bed and certain times of the day but it is gradually getting worse. I'm 65 overweight and diabetic. Any recommendations in food to eat and ones to steer away from. I heard tomatoes are bad for arthritis. Thank you.

@@lynettedevries1824 my super food, which helped A LOT is the following:
      - 1 big jar raw homemade honey (apprx 1 kg) - NO SUPERMARKET PRODUCT!
      - a bigger piece of raw ginger grated (apprx 4-5 tablespoon)
      - 4-5 coffee spoon of cinnamon powder
      - 4-5 coffee spoon of curcuma powder
      - 4-5 piece of onion grated (could be left out because of the smell, but also important ingredient)
Put all the parts into the honey, stir well. Every morning I take a tablespoon of this mixture, and then I drink an ACV (apple cider vinegar) water drink immediately (put 1 tablespoon in a glass of water). This mixture is also good for weight loss 💕🥰. This is enough for 3-4 months.
Do not forget to do a mild knee protective gymnastics 3 times a week, like yoga, callanetics, etc, even it hurts at the beginning.
If you have the possibility, try out cycling in a clean nature.
It is absolutely helpful you'll see! But give a little time for healing, it takes weeks, months. Be patient. 🥰

I had orthoscopic surgery May 2nd. (I was to have a torn Meniscus disc removed and ended up having major surgery!! - 2 torn Meniscus removed, bones shaved and some cartilage removed.) I went in being told that I would walk out without a cane or crutches and have very little pain, but... when I woke up after surgery.... I was sobbing in severe pain and had to be wheeled out in a wheelchair which I am still having to use. -- Before surgery, I could walk but might have to use a cane off and on. Since surgery, I have no use of my left leg at all. I can not lift my leg, bend my knee or straighten it. I can not use my leg at all and the Orthopedic Surgeon says that I can Not do PT at all because... Besides being in the Rare 1% of people who experience severe pain and slow healing... I, 1) I am still in severe pain 2) I am severely swollen from about 8" above my knee to my toes and 3) I have fluid on the knee that can not be drained at this time. --- Now, we are going to try an Unloader brace and on Tuesday I will get my Unloader Brace for my left knee. (to see it that will help??) - I do have Bone on Bone in both knees but my right knee does not give me any trouble at all (until I try to walk up a steep hill or stairs.) -- Do you (Please??) Have any suggestions on how to get my mobility back or... Am I seriously going to just have to break down and go in for a Total Knee Replacement as suggested if the Unloader does not help?? (sigh) (I also have Diabetes which helps to slow healing) :(

As an active person well into my 60s everyone I know with bone in bone has done the knee replacement or hip replacement. Maybe because they wanted to stay hiking or skiing. Everyone I know have been very happy with the results. My mom had both total knee replacement and hip replaced in her late 70s and it went very well. I try to keep it up during the week but it is so painful. Both knees are bone on bone digging in to each other. They will not give me replacements until I'm lost more weight. I've lost 80 lb but I'm still overweight. But it's hard to lose weight when you can't exercise. I try to exercise my arms but they hurt too. I know I sound like a whiny baby but I hurt😬😬

Hi comments are interesting. I would like to add my experience. Almost 10 years ago I suffered a skiing accident shattering my tibial plateau. I had bone grafting from my hip, multiple metal plates and 8 large screws. Recovery took a long time, I had to wear a metal sided brace from hip to ankle for about 1year. Gradually the brace was reduced in size to thigh to mid calf. I don't have any cartilage in my knee but don't need to wear a brace now. Unfortunately I'm not comfortable skiing. I have persevered and do a lot of fell walking. I usually wear a support on my knee which I feel keeps my knee more stable and also eases any pain. I take Glucosamine and Naproxen which I find helps. I am nearly 72 so thank you for reading my experiences. I hope it will encourage others not to give up

You really need to be doing something preventative all the time to help a flare-up not happen or to not be as severe. Exercising, what you're eating, maybe having a yearly in jail injection or every 6 months or something else or adding all these things together but you can't just do nothing because it's a degenerative disease.

If you strengthen your abs your lower abdominal muscles by laying on your back and raising your straight legs together with arms flat palm side down at your sides and head never lifting slowly raise your legs together up off the ground and raise them up towards your chest or as far as you can then slowly lower them back down remember no lifting your head or chest do this daily about 10 times and do that again at night any abdominal excercises to strengthen your tummy will support your back align your posture and you must lose excess weight. If you have poor slumped over posture and a big heavy tummy and you are not healthy not eating enough fresh fruit and vegetables only fast deep fried or microwave food or tons of carbs pastas mashed potatoes home fries breads pizzas gravy and sauces frappaccinos smoothies and milkshakes you are digging yourself into a pit. Its the equivalence to carrying a 100ft metal pole while standing in 3 ft of water wearing headgear and bangles during a lightening storm in the middle of a field ...why do i feel shocked because you are doing things that are for certain going to cause create and exacerbate damage to your body. Hyperextension happens also when instead of using your stomach muscles you torque your knee joints to do your leaning fwd. Imagine the weight of 3 people pulling your spinal column back folding into itself. Backs are not supposed to move that way. Then comes the domino effect one by one you have compression neuro compression those nerves are spasming pulling your lamina and.lumbar vertebrae out of alignment...strengthen your tummy muscles exercise walk abdominal exercises lose weight. Cut out fast food if u must eat fast food get wendys baked potato and a small chili. Or opt for a pollo loco chicken salad Caesar. Hope this helps and oh no diet drinks..its poison very very toxic bad for your body chemistry very bad. Hope this helps. I lost 117 lbs no diets no surgery or weird fad diets. Portion control sun chips no potato chips and walking then dancing at home and then belly dancing hula dancing tahitian dancing i was surfing not now though. Too many sharks and stingrays scary.

What worked for me was an upgraded form of the exercise recommended by Dr. (in fact I think he is a chiropractor so he may not be a Dr.) John Bergman ua-cam.com/video/wP1Vv5Bzw_Q/v-deo.html who recommends weighting your ankles and swinging them back and forth while seated on a table. That is okay but it is very boring and at only 10 minutes a day, it is not surprising that he says it can take years.
The principle is that you should be moving your knees while pulling them apart, so that they do not rub and make themselves worse (more worn) and to get the blood in there.
I find that cycling with shoes that have cleats (SPD or SPD-SL) that attach to the pedals, and then only use the rear, upswing part, of the pedal cycle so that you are pulling on the pedals to go along. This way you can pull on your knees, and move them, for an hour or more a day as you cycle to work for instance (you can make your commute longer by taking a detour too).
Another gentler way is to go swimming with large flippers. There will be no gravity on your knees and part of the flipping cycle will I think be pulling your knees.
Additionally I find that glucosamine helps. If I pull my knees by cycling and crunch on some glucosamine before my rides I find I can lay down a bit of meniscus in a couple of days, I think. I am not taking the "activated" glucosamine sulphate either just the cheapest stuff made out of shrimp and crab shells.
I give an evolutionary reason why the above may work here below.

Your videos helped me through my planter fasciitis a few years ago (along with seeing a podiatrist). I have just been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my knees. I have been doing the exercises my physical therapist gave me. But I know I come here and get even more exercises to strengthen my legs. Thank you so much for posting these videos.

That has been proven not to be true because people can do better if they eat well and are exercising and cetera. They will many times not feel pain whereas somebody with much more cartilage has more pain. There was a study out of Stanford two years ago and I just had finished here listening to some of it but that is kind of an a common thing where they see people who are doing better when they have less cartilage than someone in more pain who has more cartilage.

I'm 14 and I have pronated feet, my left knee always hurts so badly. I have grinding "bone on bone" pain in it. Could I have arthritis even though I'm a teenager?

    • @gaelin7389

physicaltherapyvideo Do you have any idea of what my condition could be? The grinding pain is on the inner side of my knee and its worse with walking and movement. My pediatrician said she thinks there's cartilage damage since my legs tend to bend inwards and that's why I feel grinding. I've had this issue since 5th grade and no one can figure it out
