- Very few things will grab people’s attention like being able belt and shout like the great rock singers, and you see people trying to do it at bars, clubs, practice rooms and karaoke all the time. Unfortunately, most of those people are doing it so incorrectly that they not only sound terrible, strained, out of breath, and like they are positively killing themselves, but they are also doing very serious damage to their voices.
Being a rock singer is not easy. It takes being in incredible shape. You have to be able to squeeze your upper and lower diaphragm muscles hard enough to make diamonds, all while threading the needle and placing your voice exactly right and relaxing all the muscles in your face, neck, throat or vocal cords. It’s a lot like lifting weights while surfing. Anyone can learn to do it though, and that’s one of my favorite parts of my job - helping people learn to sing anything they want, without hurting themselves or straining, and sound great!

sounds great! This is exactly the style of singing I'm trying to do. If I may ask a question.. is it possible to work up to high notes with this technique. Around an A i have to basically yell out the notes and I feel like that it shouldn't be that loud.
Absolutely. I can sing literally anything using the techniques I’ve learned. The whole trick is to not push or strain, and learn to keep your throat and pharynx relaxed and open.
You definitely don’t want to get louder to sing higher.

I have most certainly stuck my neck out, as soon you will all know. Don’t give up. Not ever. You can scream for hours at the top of your lungs, without doing damage to your voice, and you will be so loud no one can silence you. I know the path to free expression.

Hey man, I love your videos and they’ve really helped me get a good idea of how to sing the way I really love to correctly. Right now I’m gonna range caps out at around a G4-A flat4 and I was wondering if it’s possible to increase your range? My goal is to be able to perform a B4 on stage confidently, any higher than that would simply be a plus. Combined I’d say I’ve had around four months of real vocal training and I haven’t seen any improvement, I realize something like this wouldn’t happen overnight, but is it something that can actually happen? Any tips would be greatly appreciated because none of my teachers ever wanted to tell me the amazing things you do. Thank you so much!

Fantastic album. You have to relax your throat, Vocal fry, and then shape, place and support the sound to create the effect.
It is NOT actual screaming and it doesn’t require any tension or pain whatsoever.

I'm a big RA fan, but I honestly don't consider Tim's live voice that great (not his current one anyways) and I don't think he's actually utilizing the teqnique you're demonstrating in this video.

nahailyenvanakkor I heard in interviews Tim learned his way by just singing as loud as he could. When the band started he didn't have a mic so he just had to shout to hear himself. That's the story of tims voice

Had a Mic just no PA so it was plugged into the guitarists shitty practice amp. This is back in 94ish when he was in .Baxter. during high school. "My idea of singing is screaming till your throat is torn apart and the veins in your neck threaten to burst."
I feel the part you sang quietly wasn't connected and was falsetto. Which is a lot easier by comparison of singing quietly with full connection. But I have used that disconnect to help find the right feelings and get the right tone to come out when I try to connect it again. But I am very amateur and only discovered belting this month and I have a tendency to do the yell response (pull chest) instead of belt but.. bit by bit it will become more consistent. Thanks for the tips though it's really helped me clear up what to aim for!
I would agree. This video is almost 3 years old now, and my technique and method are leaps and bounds beyond what I’m doing here.
I actually use a lot less force, and a lot more resonance and finesse now. It also sounds way more intense when I do “scream” sounds, and I have lots of ring in my singing tones, which sounds a lot better.
@@PsyOpConspiracy if this was 3 years ago and you were already damn good at singing Rise Against you must be on a whole other level now.
Sorry if I was picking up on a small thing it just seems for me understanding it in terms of connected and disconnected has been the most useful for me.
The Linkin Park cover was awesome I'd like to hear more. At best I can do a very poor Still Dreaming by Silverstein but the phrase "I'm Still Dreaming" is damn high and I hate all those vowels.

You're still using your chest voice to sing those high notes quietly?
Not sounded like he broke into head voice or more airy like falsetto
check out Carl John France's version. I found immediate results, he emphasizes using upper voids which create resonance, rather than the sound "pulling away" from the voice.
he sings differently know one can really imitate that unless theres years of experience because his voice sounds like that because of years of experience (screaming).
