    Okay, i think i found my new vocal teacher. I learn classical sing, but it's not enough for me. I want hardcore/metalcore, punk-rock, grunge stuff to sing, and write. And You are the best i've found for that. Instant sub. Keep Rock!

    This really helped. I've wondered for ages why I sometimes simply cannot sing anything or hold a note, where as other times in studio I've been able to from a low E to high E an octave up without any breaks when going absolutly ham. Good vid.

    There was a show Nirvana did with Tad where Tad threw up and passed out drunk backstage, so Kurt Cobain sang some Tad songs with Tad's band. Anyway, he did a great job on High on the Hog, but his microphone cut out on another song (I forget which), but Kurt's voice was so loud you could just feintly hear him singing through all the distorted guitars and drums. I was surprised I could actually, just barely, hear Kurt singing without the mic working. If you find that performance and listen to it, you might be able to hear him too.
    Another similar story: Sean Kinney, the drummer from Alice in Chains, has claimed that Layne Staley was so loud that he could hear his natural voice projecting through the drum kit when they played together.

    Can you do a video on how to sing in an Alice in Chains style?

    Try keeping tight vocal closure, push with air (diaphragm whatever), keep low larynx “sing ‘uh’. Develope dat damn passagio, and then when you can do it with low larynx change to doing it in Twang. Gg that’s how I do it anyway..

    Awesome stuff doug - loudness is really HUGE - very very important - pretty much mandatory in order to fully reach our potential. I liked how you put an annotation "this sounds louder in person" - an important detail.

    Damn great video Doug! This was definitely my biggest problem and still was. I also had tons of people, including my teacher, who told me I was a bass vocal range. Somewhere along the line I said fuck that I need to sing high, if brendon Uriel can have a huge range, so can I! And I stoped caring about what people thought because my dreams were more important than others opinions

    • @Dougzed
      @Dougzed  7 років тому +4

      Awesome man! You can definitely increase your vocal range. I haven't heard your voice but maybe you will have some qualities of your lower range when you extend it up. But yes you can learn to increase your range !

    For the most part, you're completely correct about belting. You are just missing a few things. First off in neck and back anchoring, it gives it support, and the fact that actually for a correct and powerful belt, you actually breath to the chest but still with the openness of the throat and the neck anchoring to prevent and restriction. It also allows for more sound for less breath, and you still keep the support in the diaphragm.

    Can Doug or someone tell if it's okay to have very noisy mix/high voice, as if very nasty baby is crying, maybe it will pass after some time? I started to get some mix month or two ago. And it's sometimes hard to get back from head to chest voice, when I'm singing it almost never happens without cracking, does it mean I'm not in mix voice?

      Its called layering

    • @enthra1728
      @enthra1728 5 років тому +8

      Live, Dave does backing vocals on top of Kurt's. In studio, Kurt records multiple takes of the same verse/phrase/etc, and layers them on top of each other to get a "bigger" sound. Called layering, like someone else said.

    Doesn‘t exactly fit the topic, but I had to recorde some zombie-like screaming and monsternoises a few days ago for a game.
    It was a great but alien feeling to scream out of my soul like that because I was not used to shout like that.
    I really didn‘t know what would come out my mouth when I tried to scream and it suprised when I heard myself.
    What I learned is that it really depends on your talking habits what you can do with your voice. If you are used to speak softly of course you don‘t know what you would sound like screaming.
    So step out of your comfort zone. Practice in a car, scream in a pillow or practice in any other room. Just get used to your loud voice and then work out the details!

      from what i have read and experienced, its a vocal fatigue, so vocal cord is kind of a muscle, and if a muscle rarely used heavily (as in high notes hard rock stuff) the muscle gets tired easily, the often i rehearse with my band, the better notes i can sing, but as you do sport, u need some rest between them. hope that helps.

    For some reason, I found all songs too easy to sing, like high notes didn't seem high when I was 11 or 12....so I assumed I am singing in a lower octave so I sang all the notes in a higher octave than original and clearly broke my voice at the high notes....now after over 8 years I know why I shouted when I sung and can sing all the notes easily because all the years I was screaming although broke my voice back then, it still made me learn to sing higher increasing my range by a lot
