Hey all, I only see “reference mix” on Led Zeppelin’s UA-cam channel, is their an original official audio out there?
Yeah, this is an alternate version of the song released when Jimmy remastered the albums
On the album...if you click on a whole original album I think it is there.
Here you go. ua-cam.com/video/gbp9K2nfhI8/v-deo.html If the thumbnail picture for the album is the strange, multi-colored one, that is the expanded or companion version.
Your right SalvoG, this was not the recording off the album..
This means he's ready to go anywhere, but to no avail. Because at the time Robert was in a wheelchair recouping a broken leg from a near fatal accident on a Greek Island
Tea for One is a slow blues in the vein of Since I've Been Loving You.
This is a rock shuffle. Zep were just so good at playing off each other by this album. There’s pushes by JB and a couple of short sections in which they switch to a different time signature, that’s why it may sound a bit different. They’re locked in.
This is an example of "Boogie Rock". It's more of the Blues-based Rock music but the beats are very hoppy-poppin-shufflin', style. It's very rootsy, boogie music styled. :)
That's not the original studio cut, that's a ruff working cut of the song, you played the bonus track from the 2014 reissue lol
This is the reference mix. Not released version.
the rythm section is so groovy on this
Classic rock with some swing.
Remember, Robert was stuck in a wheelchair during this recording of the LP, and didn't really know if he'd recoup his health, let alone walk again. He might have been jacked on pain killers, but I'm not sure.
Anyway these song nuggets have grown on me through the years. Also, disco was huge during this time, so some of that funk is coming through, which I love!
I think this song was a testament to Robert not feeling his mates were understanding what he was going through, especially management.
Tea For One continues in this vein, where he feels time is going slowly by. At one point he was thinking about giving it all up and becoming a teacher if you can believe it! John convinced Robert to stay in the band and the rest is history...
Another song created quickly and spontaneously out of a studio jamb. There are telling lyrics from Robert in this song, mostly about his growing resentment towards Jimmy Page (and to a lesser degree Peter Grant), who both pushed hard for Robert to record this album while Robert was still recovering from a near-fatal car accident, and in a wheelchair.
In an interview after the album was released, Robert was quoted as saying: "Presence isn't a precis on aspects of life in general, but aspects of hurt." Robert is resentful towards the band for his treatment after his injuries from his car accident. Robert came to believe that his "friends" in the band were more concerned about "the band" and less about him as a person.
"Now, I've got friends who will give me their shoulder
When I should happen to fall"
(that is Robert saying he wasn't getting the emotional support he needed from his friends after his car accident)
"The time and his bride growing older
I've got friends who will give me fuck all"
(self explanatory - anger towards Jimmy)
"And if you ask my advice, take it slower
Then your story'd be your finest reward"
(meaning: "give me time to recover and we'd be fine - stop pushing me!")
Its important to view these songs in the context of which they were made, to fully understand the meaning behind the songs and the dynamic of the band.
Yes. What's interesting however is that during the recording of one those songs, and I'm not sure which one, Robert got so excited he jumped out of his wheelchair and almost fell but Page caught him before he could do more damage.
Between the drugs and the brutal pressure they were under, it's a wonder they got anything done at all. Page felt the weight of the world was on him, and he worked like a demon to finish this album.
@@antarcticorb9197 I think a lot of the "division" between Robert and Jimmy at this time was about minds being warped by substance abuse, mis-communication, and misinterpreted actions. Robert is an emotional guy, and wears his heart on his sleeve. He strongly values interpersonal relationships and an outward expression of emotions. Jimmy Page is inward-focused, reserved, not outwardly demonstrative. For Jimmy, there was nothing more important than "the band." For Robert, he thought they were a band of friends, making music for fun. You have to remember that outside of their recording together or their touring, the members of the band (except for Robert and Bonzo) did not hang out together socially. When Robert didn't get the emotional response from Jimmy he expected, he was disappointed, and re-evaluated his friendship with Jimmy. Jimmy said in later interviews that he wanted to give Robert and his family "space" to deal with their crisis....he put distance between them out of respect. I can understand both points of view, especially if you consider that LZ was a "business" in Jimmy's mind, and the band were business partners in addition to being friends. Robert thought they were friends, first, and band second. It was an awakening of sorts for Robert.
@@tektoniks_architects yes, Page was the producer and technically the leader, so he was certainly under tremendous pressure to deliver.
The vocals are so clear on this because you actually listened to the Reference Mix version of the song, the final mix sounds a little different. Maybe check that one out.
The beat is called a rock shuffle. I don't think you could call that a separate subgenre, though.
This is part of the companion disc of the deluxe box sets, not the original 1976 release
I think what you have here is the reference mix because there are some lyrics missing. When Jimmy remastered the catalogue for cd, he also included "companion disks" that had alternate takes, different mixes, etc. The song on the album proper has Robert singing "I lost my way" and several other phrases at the end. The "I lost my way" would go with his mindset at the time. As mentioned by Charles, he calls out Jimmy and Peter Grant for what he considered lack of sympathy and understanding for his health situation and the current situation of the band overall. The lyrics were written in Malibu and the music written in about an hour in studio in Munich.
Tea for One, considered part II, or a sister song to Since I've been loving you. It's an epic underated blues song that stands strong in the Zeppelin catalogue. Jimmy is amazing and the song relates to the long tour(s) that Zeppelin took during their career, now it's time for them to go back home to family after the drain of the road
Make this album a regular part of your music routine and it will soon dawn on you that this is the best album Zep ever recorded. Yep, I realize that is a bold statement, but I stand by it.
Agree
This is literally Robert calling Jimmy out for not being a great friend during his time of need. "Now I've got friends who will give me their shoulder
When I should happen to fall
The timing is right growin' older
I've got friends who will give me fluck all."
He also alludes to Jimmy's drug addiction by calling him the snowman.
The vocals are relatively clear on this song. I read somewhere that Robert's vocals were pushed back on Presence because they were critical of Jimmy; it's odd they would be pushed forward in this one.
That's for In Through The Out Door because Robert's son died in 77 not this album, and the song in particular is Carouselambra in which Robert sings about Jimmy. And the vocals are buried on that song
Lol. Fluck all, eh?
FUNK! Is there anything they don’t master! The GOATS! I always hear Roberts voice🤷🏻♂️ Dude that’s on you!🤨😎😂
There is an original album version...if you find the whole original album then click on the song you should get it.
Perfect!!!! 👌💙🎸🥁
You said this album was *not popular*? What makes you say that? Presence reached the top of both the British and American album charts, and achieved a triple-platinum certification in the United States. The main issue with the drop in album sales was that the movie and soundtrack, The Song Remains The Same, was released at almost the same time. There was more excitement over the live concert footage in TSRTS than the studio album, as it was many fans' first opportunity to see LZ perform.
I dig that alternative version, but the original version is a more polished mix.
Cool little song. Sounded different from the very first note, it had me messin’ with my headphones for a minute!
There was something odd about this version. In the beginning there is an extra stanza. At the end they repeat that "oh,oh" 4 times but they only do it two and the extra two stanzas sound like they were spliced on.. And in the middle something was odd. It's like stuff was sliced into this version.
Agreed. Robs voice doesn't sound as full as it should. Other subtle differences as well. Doesn't sound the final take.
Yeah need the original album version
Must be an alternate version.
This is the reference mix that was included in the remastered version of the album. Bonus track.
Tea For One is Since I’ve Been Loving You’s little sister. It’s bluesy & slow. I am sure you’re going to like it. Robert wrote this song and it’s about his feelings being away from his family. ☮️
It's definitely funk influenced. Yeah, not the final mix. The black album covers are the alternative versions (if people are using the correct art when they upload).
I see you've realized you got hold of the "alternate" take. Which is cool and has its charms, like the clearer vocals fro Robert, and I think a fuller bass from JPJ. But those cool electric guitar solos you like sound louder and fuller in the album version. This was one of my "Zeppelin Gateway Songs," when I went from casual fan to Must Hear Them All! I used to play it tons in high school, on some mix tape I had. Bonzo's groovy drumming on the last half slays me each time!
Referring to your comment about Robert’s voice being heard. IMO, LED’s first four albums, you could clearly hear Robert’s voice and understand most of the lyrics, but after that, especially the later albums it was difficult to understand his words lol. But this song was refreshing for sure. Luv these guys till the end!! Rock on!!¡
It's Led Zeppelin, the funk was baked in by having a swinging rhythm section. Just enjoy it brother, that's what it's for.
I think you’re going to like “Tea for One”. Just listened to it again and it’s my personal favorite off this album. It’s a beautiful song and Jimmy Page’s guitar work is stellar. It’s similar in tone to “Since I’ve Been Loving You”, but has the feel of a band that is older and more mature.
I don't think he likes slow blues like this (Tea For One), but page's guitar textures on this song are some of the most haunting and evocative of anything he's ever done. I don't know, it doesn't seem to register with him though.
I love the next song, just lay back and chill go through the journey as it takes you away
Robert recorded this album while in a wheelchair in the studio, following a car accident in Greece when he broke his leg. Try singing from a wheelchair...
this is funk rock
You should know the rock genre by now! This is hard rock rock and roll! Don't listen to wiki half the time they don't know how to categorize music! Especially when it comes to Led Zeppelin! And Jimmy Page is the riff master!!
this track never done live in a concert
It's jazz blues without horns
I think Tea for One is about a coffee date.
whoa, that version is not the original album version, it must an alternate take.
You will like the next album but do Nobody's Fault But Mine and For Your Life live first! One song left on this one!
I see some of the comments referring to Robert casting Jimmy as a cold friend, but why would Jimmy agree to record a song that puts a negative light on him?
Great song, you should listen to For Your Life another great groove song.
This is Plant giving Page some grief about his lack of sympathy following his car accident, never played live as far as I know, one or two stand out tracks from this album but in general you can tell it was a rushed job, start to finish in 3 weeks I believe.....
Lots o' coke.
Still have my pink 8-track
This may have been mentioned in the previous coments.....Zeppelin never perform this live and to my knowledge they never performed it as solo artists until Page & the Black Crows toured together.
Here's a vid:
ua-cam.com/video/uoAWteTT1rk/v-deo.html
rockabilly genre fused with everything else
And they never did this song live
I could be talking out of my ass but I feel as though rock and roll evolved, vocals became louder, instrumentals became more background. Maybe that's why or maybe that's just how they wanted to do it with this track
The vocals are different than the original.
Hey next time it would be better to do the finished version. This was bascially the backing track
This song kinda makes it obvious that the band was falling apart. It had been stressed for some time. When Robert's son Karac died John Bonham was the only one who went to the funeral. Towards the end Robert and JPJ were more friends and into family while Jimmy and John Bonham were off drinking and drugging.
Make sure you do the right version for the next song, this is an alternate version, still ok but not better than the final cut.
yeah, not the full mix
Not the studio version
Bummer
There's something funky about that recording you're listening to !? I mean I know the album and song very well and believe me that is not how his vocals come through if you put the album on 😂😂😂😂
Check for another version cuz that is NOT how the song sounds
That did not end the way it did on the original album. It ends with a really sharp power cord with a stadium style reverb. Which is in contrast with most of the arrangement being a compressed studio vibe. Great song. Disappointing end.
I think this is in mono or something! Sounds weird!
SalvoG, PLEASE stop trying to fit LZ music into specific *genres*! It will never work, and just make you frustrated.
That was spliced badly, I don't understand why people do that crap, didn't sound right whatsoever, then that someone added some bullshit at the end, just awful .... (edited) as I read through the comments it was stated this is an alternate version from a remastered release, I did not know that, but the original sounds so much better imo
And classic rock isn't really a genre! Any music that is over 25 years old is considered classic!
Wrong version my man.
