I adore this song; it is emotional, intense and I consider to be Zep's most prog rock. The vocals are a bit buried under the instrumentation, but the lyrics describe the entire arc of Led Zeppelin to that point and Robert's anger over the lack of support he felt after his son passed. Everything was basically milk and honey when they started ("all was joy and hands were raised towards the sun as love in the halls of plenty overrun"). It described how strong and powerful the group was ("and everything is soon, no sooner thought than deed but no one seemed to question anyway"). However, devastation was lurking ("How keen the storied hunter's eye prevails upon the land to seek the unsuspecting and the weak"). After the tragedy ("Who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand") the band had to figure out what to do ("...and make the 'status plan'") would Plant want to continue? What was going to happen? In the slowed down middle, part of the lyrics are "Where was your word, where did you go?" and "Where was your helping, where was your bow?" These parts are believed to be addressing Peter Grant and Jimmy specifically as Robert felt "Adrift on a sea of futile speech". From earlier songs, the cracks were already there but I think it was the aftermath of Karac's death that completed Robert's inner break with Zeppelin ("Release the grip, throw down the key") even if, outwardly, he was still in the band. At one point near the end, Robert yells "They had to stay!" I think the lyric is there because out of the group only Bonzo went back with Robert and was present at the funeral. Why? Some say the rest of the band didn't want to add to the already media frenzy during such a difficult time, some say they should have done *something*. Later in the mid-90s, when Jimmy and Robert reunited for Unledded, they would perform In The Evening but during the middle, work in the middle lyrics of Carouselambra but changed, so instead of "Where was your word, where did you go?" etc., you might hear "Where did you come from, where did you go? Strong was your armor, dark was your bow." You should read the full lyrics of the original song; their private story is almost painful to hear out loud. Thank you for your indulgence for this long post.

Excellent summation, thanks. The greatest impediment to a Led Zeppelin reunion tour has been Plant's wish to chart his own music course. The band was Page's brainchild and he dominated its direction. He was the soul of Zeppelin. To follow paths Plant and even Jones wanted take would have taken away that soul and this song reflects that. It is not a Led Zeppelin song in my view. It is a Genesis song and that Peter Gabriel was suggested as a Bonham replacement reinforces that. Plant's solo albums have not worn well, so often embracing current musical trends when Zeppelin once started them. It was not until Plant moved back to his roots that his greatness as a singer again came to the fore. Jones continued down the prog path and I am not aware of any of his own work that matches what he achieved with Zeppelin. Unable to assemble the same depth of talent he had with Zeppelin, Page has drifted rudderless since 1980. The Coverdale and Page project made the right noises but it wasn't anywhere as good as Zeppelin. Neither was Walking into Clarkesdale. Rejoice in the sensational 10 years we got from Zeppelin but the band was dying in 1979 when this track was laid down . Bonzo's death avoided it dragging into the 1980s as a follower of fashion.

    3 songs in 1!
I love the overall feel of this song, it just keeps rising and rising for the first 4 minutes; like riding around on a carousel while the excitement keeps building. Then they break it down for a 3 minute soulful, contemplative section with, dare I say it, shades of Lakeside Park by Rush. And yup, I'm gonna call it; those last 3 and a half minutes are pure disco. Just when you thought Zep wouldn't go there, you've got people skating to this at the roller rink. And the lyrics? Yeah, I have no idea either.

    • @heliotropezzz333
      @heliotropezzz333 2 роки тому +6

The lyrics are about the band's behaviour and their isolation from the real world without a sense of what was to hit them in the future. Some of it was rather critical of Jimmy Page for failing to support Robert Plant when his son died suddenly while they were on tour. From what Robert Plant said at a later time, the person this is about did not realise at the time of the song.
('Who cares to dry the cheeks of those who saddened stand ( reference to Robert?)
Adrift upon a sea of futile speech? ( reference to Robert?)
And to fall to fate and make the 'status plan'
And the Lord there in heaven would never preach.
      I'm singin',
      Ah, ah, ah, ah.
Where was your word, where did you go? ( reference to Jimmy?)
Where was your helping, where was your bow? Bow.' ) ( reference to Jimmy?)
I heard the word; I couldn't stay. Oh. ( reference to Robert getting news about his son?)
I couldn't stand it another day, another day, (reference to Robert's reaction to the news?)
Another day-ay, day-ay, another day, another day.

The vocals, like in many Zep songs, plays the part of another instrument.

So great seeing people discover Zeppelin, this song is a hidden treasure ,Prog without being up it's own behind, the outro is probablymy most rewind moment in any song ,the aggressive guitar keeps you wanting it to go on and on. Again Zeppelin were pioneering without even knowing it.The 80s rock and pop were dominated by keyboards ,Van Halens most popular song Jump ,keyboard led, yet Zeppelin were just plotting their own course before everyone else. Still my favourite band of all time because the sheer scope and landscape of so many genres in their music keeps me interested as it did in 1981 when first discovered them, yes bad timing when you consider the passing of Bonzo the year before. When people say Stones or Beatles I aways reply Led Zeppelin.. Thankfully I saw all the solo tours from 1983 to last month and I was lucky enough to be at the Zeppelin reunion show in 2007 ,it blew my mind with John Bonhams son on drums. Kashmir that night was singularly the best live moment at any gig I've been too and that's since 1982.
I'm glad you appreciate their music ,I feel envious of people discovering them for the 1st time now as back in 81 I was the same ,literally the min I heard Whole Lotta Love my music world changed . For me the greatest band in popular music history 👏🤘

I was in my early twenties when this LP was released. I could feel the shifting tides musically, with Punk and Disco invading the airwaves, and rock bands trying to stave off the onslaught. But Led Zeppelin were always there to provide the much needed foundation.

That wasn't a let-down either....I went back the following week to see them again!

JPJ and Plant took more of a lead on the musical direction during recording In Through the Out Door as Page and Bonzo were struggling with their addictions and sometimes were no shows or late to sessions. JPJ was a musical genius and often overlooked for all his many contributions and this track is his opus. Robert was mourning the death of his son and he is more contemplative in his lyrics on a few tracks on this album.
I really enjoy Carouselambra and only wish I could hear Plant more.

One is Walking into Clarkesdale a studio album with all new songs, with a Grammy Award winning song "Most High" for Best Hard Rock Performance. The other is a live album "No Quarter:Page and Plant Unledded" where they reworked old songs and some new, which included an Egyptian Orchestra and a Moroccan string section, Kashmir was taken to another level. ITTOD is a departure from the guitar laiden Presence album in that Page uses the power chords very constructively, especially in Carouselambra. John Paul Jones was front and center so this is a more keyboard based album plus it was recorded at ABBA's Polar Studios and it lends that distinctive Polar sound so it's a perfect match. Genesis also recorded the Duke album there shortly after Led Zeppelin finished up and it also has the same type of atmosphere in its recording delivery, very clean, crisp but dynamic studio quality and I love the way it sounds, it's different from any other Zepp release for those reasons. I was 19 at this time and a Zepp fan for 10 years and they just kept evolving and it kept whatever they did fresh and there was still room to grow and expand as a band. They had no peak studio related yet. Page already had ideas for a guitar based album for the next release but that never happened.

Had my Sony Walkman with the head phones and would crank this while I was on the carnival ride. The swings. When the ride would get faster the more the swings would get pulled out. Round and round. That's how this song made me feel. Good morning to all and God Bless

I was 16 when this album came out, and it blew my mind to bits. Really sparked a lot of arguing among the fanbase, too. I especially loved that Zep-goes-Kraftwerk last section, as I'd just discovered Kraftwerk's music a year earlier. The band apparently worked out a live version for the Celebration Day show, but didn't do it.

This and Physical Graffiti are my favorite Albums. I love this song. So cool and different, but you never knew what to expect from Zep! That's what make them so good. They get labeled Hard Rock, but that is only one aspect of their diverse music. You should listen to a few more solo songs by Plant and Page's The Firm and Coverdale Page. Also check out Sea of Love by the Honeydrippers (Robert singing with a lot of talented artists including Brian Setzer, Jeff beck, Nile Rogers, and Page).

SalvoG - You metiontion that you can't imagine what this must have sounded like iwhen it was released in 1979.... The problem with the 70's is that just about all the big bands around were "redefining the sound of music".... Once the Beatles had opened the floodgates then it all poured out... Damn I was lucky to be in my 20's in the 70's....!!!

Zeppelin was a smorgasbord of music genres, and they mastered all that came before them. People call them rip off's, but 1 : They played versions of other peoples music as a tribute to them. 2: They made it their own, rather than completely copy the original songs and or styles. 3: Lets be honest, every style they attempted they made far better versions of.

The next song is so touching…..listen to the lyrics. I wonder how you can survive the death of a child…….Robert was going to become a teacher, but was persuaded to return to music (and Zeppelin) by his best friend, Bonzo, who saw him through the worst of his grief. All of My Love is Robert’s message to his beloved little boy.
I sometimes wonder, if Zeppelin had ceased to be in 1977, after Karacs death, if John Bonham would have been able to get his drinking under control and might still be with us. He drank so much on the day he died because he was dreading the tour to the US that was planned. He hated being away from his family. In “saving” Robert, it’s as though he lost himself.

Carouselambra was the Zep song that made me think that they might have been checking out YES and Genesis.. Although Zep were never catagorized as progressive rock, they had been flirting with it for years with odd time signatures and eclectic instrumentation.
"Take of the fruit, but guard the seed.."
That sounds like a phrase right out of the YES files. And is it just me or does the opening track Behind the Lines from Duke, the Genesis album relessed that same year have a similar vibe?

To me, this song is fabulous but also very sad because any cracks in their relationships were widening, mostly due to the interplay of their individual personal struggles. Glad you'll be reacting to Coda. Some great songs on it that didn't make the cut as far back as album 1. Would also like to hear your reaction to the rest of their 2007 concert (you reacted to Kashmir from it), as well as perhaps entire concerts and/or albums, their individual music careers after LZ, documentaries, interviews, etc.
Edit: Not so interested in covers by other bands. As good as other musicians might be, none can play LZ music with the same kind of magic. ;)

I believe the lyrics are about the band's behaviour and their isolation from the real world without a sense of what was to hit them in the future.
And to fall to fate and make the 'status plan' (Reference to Jimmy making a status plan?)

Live performances, documentaries and interviews, yes! But cover songs? Why? I have very little interest in hearing random covers of Led Zeppelin music. You have 40+ years of post-Zep material from the original band members you could review -- why would you want to hear others perform LZ songs instead of following what these guys have done after LZ?
