Robert sang this song in a wheelchair, due to the terrible accident he had suffered and that forced the group to cancel tours. It's not just the operation on his vocal cords, it's that it was not known if he would be able to walk well again, everyone was nervous and depressed. This album was recorded in just 18 days, especially the result of Page's dedication. J.P. Jons was a little absent, Bonzo a little drunk, Plant in a wheelchair. Without a fixed home, because of taxes, like gypsies, at the peak of fame, nervous, full of fury and rage. THIS IS AN IMPRESSIVE SONG and given the circumstances even more so.
This performance shows the lion still has claws. 10 years of excess and touring had caught up with Zeppelin. But their musical muscles could still flex. NO band would have attempted this song live.
One of the saddest things in my opinion is that after "In Through the Outdoor" Jimmy Page says him and Bonzo planned to do a really hard rock album as their next Zeppelin project.
I think Page & Bonham especially were in their glory playing this song, it was nonstop doing what they both did best. I hate to say, but you barely notice JPJ playing, because Page & Bonham are breaking the sound barrier.
Fortunate to be at this concert, they reckon the crowd was around 200.000, certainly felt like it. Always thought this song was a risky one to play live because of how complex it is particularly for Page, when John Paul Jones was asked that question he replied, Page never gave it a thought, Superb track and one of their finest moments...
I was at the first weekend. Wanted to go to the second too but couldn’t get a ticket. I was lucky to have an awesome mum who let me go even though I was only 15 👍
Keep in mind that in the original recording Page recorded multiple layers of guitar parts, whereas here, he's recreating the sound with just one guitar, and doing it live!
What Presence lacks in the wanderlust of LZIV-Physical Graffiti streak, it makes up for it in its grittiness. This is a band down in the trenches of badluck, injuries and addiction- rising to the occasion and delivering the goods. I personally really enjoy the last 2 zep studio albums..Presence for the rock and roll barrage and In through the outdoor for it’s return to experimentation. Achilles, regardless of how people feel about Presence, is generally considered a tour de force..the mighty arms of atlas hold the heavens from the earth!!
Great reaction!, this is one of my favorite performances of Led Zeppelin. Page, Plant, and Jones, totally killing it, and John Bonham going total animal on his drums = Awesome!
Jimmy looks so cool while playing here(even if sweaty and maybe a bit zonked out!). Bonham looks absolutely joyful during much of the Knebworth show, like he's aware of his superpowers and reveling in using them in a group deserving OF them. Robert's charisma could, as always, inspire anyone to get the Hots on for Nowhere, and JPJ, understated but never overrated, just quietly lays down amazing rhythmic support, complex yet always in the service of the song. Glad you saw this!
9:40 yeah it was performed twice by Page and plant in 95/96. One of them was in Atlanta, the other one I don't really remember. About the sound quality, they're both bootlegs so I don't think you can expect good sound quality but performances are damn great.
This was the last performance of the original members. Kebworth 1979. Most memorable concert I ever went to. 200,000 people, all day event including Todd Rundgrens Utopia and Chas and Dave so eclectic. Great concert. The cost £7.50. !!!!! Tell that to the kids today and they won't believe you. Loving your reactions. Doing it properly in order listening to their progression. 👍👍
This album is also wonderful! Zeppelin is magnificent...especially live!! Notice how they are always right on time!! John Bonham died in 1980...I don't think any other drummer could actually do it!
Yes Achilles last stand is proto power metal! And this is the last time Achilles last stand was played live because the following year 1980 John Bonham passed so zeppelin agreed they couldn't continue without the god of thunder! So they disbanded
been listening to it for 32 years, every zep song is a masterpiece but this one was playing in a shop and when i heard it for the first time, i left the shop 11 minutes later without even looking at what was selling and my jaw firmly on the floor
We're Gonna Groove (one time show opener), Nobody's Fault But Mine (coming soon) and Wearing and Tearing (CODA) are also pretty badass, from a "driving sound" point of view. You've already done Communication Breakdown and Trampled Underfoot.
Yeah, Wearing an Tearing is actually in my top 10. If any song demonstrates Zeppelin proving their greatness in the face of adversity, this is it. Not their greatest song, but a last grasp at proving to the world that they could still rock harder than anyone else. Basically just "Train Kept a Rolling" on speed.
@@charlesgervais4673 Exactly. Don't know if you've ever seen it, Charles, but Page + Plant did a live version of Wearing and Tearing in 1990 in Knebworth that kicked butt. I'll put a link here but I don't know if YT will allow it. ua-cam.com/video/W8qt6TOu3FM/v-deo.html

Everytime I see Knebworth 79, I wonder what it could have been had they commited to that show as much as they were to the O2. I suspect on some level Page, Plant and Jones reflect the same way. As great as O2 was, imagine 30 year younger guys with Bohnam doing Knebworth, and all of them fully committed. Would have been O2 cubed. But as my best fiend said, I should be happy with that sparkle of Zeppelin we were fortunate enough to get in 2007.At least there was one last great concert.
Jimmy gets some flack for being a bit sloppy in his guitar playing. In this case, look at what he is trying to lock down. How many guitars were overdubbed on the album track? He needs to cover all of that here. He does a superb job filling out the sound.
Nothing to see here, just another epic composition and performance. sarc. Tremendous amount of effort they put into everything while making it look effortless. And Mozart smiled.

We all know why Jimmy was covered in sweat at the start of this but my god he would’ve been anyway after it regardless . Honestly does it get better than that ?
Page called Presence Zeppelin's most important album: bleak, bruised and crackling with electric fury. Plant called it an intense, tightly focused cry from the depths. Nothing here but percussion, guitars, harmonica and vocals, LZ produced a sonic, multi-layered behemoth that stands as their hardest-rocking output. Regrettably, in my opinion, this album is all sound with no soul. Zeppelin at its technical best, but lacking in anything that I can actually connect to, or relate to. I've tried to give this album a chance and have listened to it in its entirety at least 75 times, but nothing lands. I'm happy (and a little jealous) that others are able to connect with this output.
I thought that when it first came out back in the day, but now that I frame it with the back story and what they were going through, it's resonated big time!
