@@therealmistermemer I had the Z Flip 3 a year or two ago when it first launched, he did a review on that phone and it did better than this one. Samsung designed the hinge technology they are using here. It's essentially an exact copy of the z flip 3/4 with a bigger outer screen. Frankly I think that hollow area behind the outer glass is very concerning. That's the screen that will be bumping into things when it's in your pocket. They should have had a plastic frame behind that outer display to support it. Bump into a table or something and it could be game over. IMHO the outer screen should be the tougher of the two since it is exposed the most. The inner screen is protected at all times while folded.

I'm not sure if the apple watches are still doing this but back a few years ago, I dropped my apple watch series 3 on the beveled edge and the beveled edge of the glass was completely unsupported. Despite being the stainless steel version with the sapphire glass, it shattered only on the beveled edge that had no support behind it. It seems like manufactures don't understand how vulnerable unsupported glass is.

Unless you had something else in your pocket... let's say a cough drop, since we're pretty tuned-in to not putting anything damagingly-hard in the same pocket as our phone... I'm not sure if our squishy thigh muscles would create enough _localized_ PSI to break that outer glass.
*Unless...* that empty void extends the length of that half of the phone.
Even then, I'm not sure, since now it's a force spread out across a greater surface area.

Into that empty area does swell the inside flexible screen, but that's not going to give any more backing to that external half-screen. The phone looks pretty good otherwise, especially the hinge itself, but Motorola could have easily put a thin metal sheet behind the screen there, not lost much space inside for the folding screen, and greatly strengthened that area. It think it would fail pretty much the same when folded if you squeezed on it in the same place.

    • @NatalieCarpenter

@@GregConquest I can personally vouch for this happening. I had the phone folded inside of a pocket in the rear waistband of my skirt. When I pulled the phone out the outside screen was badly cracked about a finger's-width up from the hinge. I thought maybe the pressure from the pocket zipper pull had pressed against it but it's not possible to have the pull hit the folded phone in the location the crack occurred. There is definitely a give in the glass on the spot where it's cracked so it appears to be a pressure crack. I called Motorola support but without the pricey accident care protection (that I turned down thinking I wouldn't need it and would just pay for a repair caused by a drop) they refuse to help me. I believe this is a defect in the phone that others will experience - a phone should not fail when in a padded pocket! After years of using LG phones I returned to a Motorola thinking the durability would be adequate on this phone, barring drops, of course. Boy was I wrong. I just bought this phone a few days ago and I love it. The charging time is absolutely insane. I walked outside for 5 minutes with a dead battery and it was like 20 percent charged when I came in. I bought a case on Amazon for 14 dollars and I'm honestly not too worried about breaking it. I am worried about getting dirt in the hinge though.
