After spending 20 years working overseas, I finally hit on a great way to get good healthy sleep on an airplane, even in economy...Apply all the tips given here, but add one thing: a shawl....Just drape it over your head and shoulders and you create a small cocoon, all yours. Comfortable eye mask, effective ear plugs, and this little private tent...plenty of air coming up from the bottom....AND once I was stuck on a commuter flight right after a strong storm....when the planes could finally take off again, there were dozens of planes lined up for take-off...It took close to two hours before take-off and it was FREEZING in the plane. It was hot summertime and most people wore shorts...People were huddled together....I almost felt guilty that I had a light wool shawl to wrap around my body,,,,It really comes in handy for an instant sense of privacy on long long flights....like those to Tokyo from Chicago...and again, Tokyo to Bangkok....Shawls make these long hauls less stressful! Try it!
I used my shawl as a tent with an eye mask, neck pillow, and noise canceling headphones…probably looked strange but I got a solid 5-6 hours of sleep and woke refreshed!
@@cherylduncan4118 I'm sure I looked strange too...But it gave me some kind of sense of privacy and then I could just relax into sleep...I try to make sure that bathroom stuff is done at the beginning...I always tried for a window seat to rest my head on the travel pillow (not the neck kind) that its my second necessity...and then after dinner, off to sleep...It really helped me...
In long haul flights I prefer the isle seat because I go to the bathroom many times during the flight. I also like to stand up, do some stretching and even walk a bit.
Same experience. I found that I like the isle seat because in this case I can walk and do stretching - but if you prefer to sleep - that is right, window seat is better.
I’m not sure why I watched this vid when I’m someone who can easily fall asleep in a public bus or train, even when my station is only like three stops away. But hey, it’s always good to have some extra knowledge, I guess?
The only way I've had the kind of sleep where you wake up and wonder what year it is, was to completely exhaust myself the day before. Once, after touring Universal Studios and the other time, after 14 hours of walking around Rome. I fell asleep over Spain and woke up over Brazil.
I’m 6.1 and I have wide shoulders nothing I do can make me sleep on long haul flight. Getting a window seat is making it even harder, can’t move.. The only option is to be making more money to be able to afford business or first class.
Note--the blood clots are not caused by prescription sleeping pills. They are caused from being in the same cramped position for an extended period and not stretching, walking, or doing things as simple as flexing and extending your ankles. All of these things stimulate blood flow in your legs. Yes, sleeping pills do encourage staying in that single position for a prolonged period...but it is the lack of movement rather than the pill that causes the issue. Blood clots are way too common on long haul flights--be sure to stand and stretch as well as doing some "at your seat" exercises while awake!
Window seat. King size pillow (on the flatter side) carried through airport folded in half in a large, handled packing cube. Socks with traction grips on bottom so when I pull my feet up into the seat they do not slide back off. Noise cancelling headphones Eye mask Light blanket (also carried in the cube with the pillow, socks & flat hotel slippers for walking around) When I want to sleep, I pull myself up into the seat and lean into the window/wall while hugging my long pillow. When awake I can put the pillow back into the cube and set it on the floor as a foot rest to elevate my legs. In addition to allowing for great sleep, these techniques have also completely eliminated my RLS on longer flights :-)
If you put the foam earplugs in correctly, they don't fall out, and they work extremely well. I've used them for years doing tree removal, operating equipment, etc.
If the flight isn't full, bring along a few tools to take out all the seats in the middle of the aircraft, and chuck them onto the tarmac. Then, in the spare space, install a table-tennis table. [Or boxing ring, or whatever] Next, re-install all the front seats to face the rear, so that everybody can watch. Bring along heaps of beer. Then you can take turns competing, and drink heaps of beer when you are in the audience. The weak part of the plan is that some cockpit and cabin crew might not go along with the idea. Which is a shame, because it is a nice idea. You back-up plan is to bring along a huge phone book, and try to read it from cover to cover. If this doesn't get you off to sleep, then you are a hard-core insomniac, and probably should not fly.
Aha! I see where you are coming from. Back in the day some aircraft (possibly BAC 111 and or Trident) had facing seats and a big fold away table at the overwing emergency exits. Also known as the party seats. Not much sleep, but massively entertaining flights.
I once asked a flight attendant what her tips were for sleeping on a plane. She suggested listening to white noise (ocean waves, etc.) in your head phones. Lots of white noise apps available to download.
The one thing that stops me sleeping on the plane more than anything is the incredibly dry air which makes breathing through the nose uncomfortable. Gotten around that one by simply putting hand cream on each nostril. After waking up years ago drooling on a strangers shoulder Ive been too scared to sleep on a plane ever since! 😅
I don’t know why i never see this in recommendations but if you just bend the head support that’s built onto the plane seat, that will support your head and let you sleep. It’s enough for me, at least. Anyone does this too?
I fell asleep for 4 hours on my flight which was 10 hours and when I woke up I remember my mom waking me up asking me where we were and we were above the clouds and I thought it was snow lmao
Man I automatically fall asleep as soon as the wheels leave the ground and usually stay asleep at least until the drink cart comes by. Something about the change in cabin pressure on takeoff just knocks me right out. On overnight flights where people are all well behaved and quiet, I can sleep through the whole night.
I have an 8h flight next month without my husband and I did it before and couldn’t sleep, hopefully these tips will help, at least now with the mask no one is going to see my ugly sleeping faca
Great tips!! Thank you!! I’d like to add, that if you cross your arms, it really helps to relax and sleep better while sitting! This has always worked for me😜
Best tip for me would be just pop in sleeping pill ...Again drink more water would be very inconvenient to walk out to restroom when sitting near window, right? I love window seat but at my age I need stretch every couple hours on 19 hours flight ✈️ so even isle seat not an ideal but still more convenient...but luckily next flight will be a premium seat so happy about it...wish me 🛏 💤 😴 😃😍💕
I lift my legs off the floor by putting a block or backpack under my feet. Elevating my thighs off the seat helps w circulation and comfort. I think you could bring a yoga block on w you and use it as it would fit under seat in front. I also turn off air above my head. Always sit in window seat. Never take a sleep aid. Don't drink booze or coffee either on a plane. Always have a shawl w me as well.
Believe me, you don't need any sleeping tips for a flight to and from Australia when you're on last 8 Hours, you automatically fall asleep . Btw the long flight journey is totally worth it.

@@MegMatthews_3 I once had a strange day arriving in Hong Kong in the morning. I just went out and had a full day of doing stuff. It was strange because even though I arrived at about 7 am, it felt like noon, so it felt like I had two afternoons. If you are there very early, and are lucky enough to be able to check in early, then you can get a couple of hours of sleep, but make sure you set an alarm. I still get it wrong. My tip is to go to bed really early 2 nights before so you get a lot of sleep and then the next night your up all night and then when your on your flight you will be tired
I have an mp3 of rain and thunder on my phone. My son likes the sound of a train rolling over tracks. Our earbuds are noise canceling. Personally selected white noise is underrated and surprisingly powerful!
I’m truck driver. I can seat in one position and drive for 20 hours. Of course Stop for fuel, bathroom etc. Do I need to sleep on my 8 hour fly? 😂 I probably be watching movies and playing games.
I got a sky pillow. They are designed for sleeping sitting up. It’s a blow up pillow that you put your face in the hole in the top and your arms in the side. Rest it on your knees or tray table. Best thing you also won’t snore
You can buy a leg swing that you slid over the tray and allows your feet to be off the ground and legs more comfortable. Not expensive makes 13 hr flights way better
I bought one of those and it slipped off never to be found again. I attached it to the tray and it seemed to work ok. The people in front fully reclined and it pushed my knees down. The thing slipped off. I didn't see my knees for 10 hours later.
The longest portion of my upcoming trip is 14 hours from Seattle to Singapore. I may take a nap but I don’t want to sleep much. I leave Seattle at 10 AM and arrive at Singapore at 5:30 PM. I’ll sleep at Singapore Airport and leave the next morning at 7 AM for Bangkok. It’s much more important for me to align my sleeping habits as I’m crossing 12 time zones I periodically take blood thinner medication and will be sure to take it going both ways
Earplugs are a must! Those foam things are a complete waste of time, the best ones I have found are wax ear-plugs from the Pharmacy. If you have small ears...like me, you can pull them in half warm them up between your gingers to make them pliable and squash them into your ears and no noise....and they don't stick out, or fall out! 😊
No way I can fall asleep in economy. I need to pee a lot so window is out. Uncomfortable masks as well. I found neck pillows useless. Getting up often by sitting in the aisle seat for others often is a good thing. A super duper pain killer When I can't take it anymore on a 13 hour long haul works wonders. After that it's like hell I can do this😅.
"commit it" the single worst advise I have ever heard...if you can't sleep in coach as I just learned on two overnight long haul flights this advice will just leave you frustrated and annoyed.
Don’t eat too much of your meal and leave your dessert on the tray. I like to get my backpack that’s my carry on and put it under my feet, thereby elevating my legs as I find I can twist to the side better in this position to lean against at the side of the plane or my husband if I’m in the aisle seat.
for me sleep aid = drammamine. it makes you drowsy. for longer than 8 hour flights, i pop one as soon as we are boarding, and then mid flight, i pop another one. you can try to pop two right up front for extra drowsiness.

Or, you could also take Benadryl right before you get on. Knocks you right out!
Also I find taking gravol helps you sleep I also take a muscle relaxer as I'm a very nervous flyer!
i hate long fights! economy class in flights over 6 hours should be illegal its like being in a prison but worse. at-least you can lie down there
I have an mp3 of rain and thunder on my phone.
😂 I probably be watching movies and playing games.
whatever you do, if it's a long haul flight, you will asleep...
I got a sky pillow. They are designed for sleeping sitting up. It’s a blow up pillow that you put your face in the hole in the top and your arms in the side. Rest it on your knees or tray table. Best thing you also won’t snore
I fell asleep while watching this video, I think I'll be ok
From my experience - listening some quiet audiobook really helps for sleeping, works for me. Could be some music as well.
I cannot sleep because I snore. I mean, I am bothered that my snoring will interrupt other people sleeping.
Just buy silicone earplugs.
A super duper pain killer
When I can't take it anymore on a 13 hour long haul works wonders. After that it's like hell I can do this😅.
I always carry my own kapok pillow with me. It rests very well against the window.
Qualuudes back in the day on long flights and was supercharged upon arrival.
Today try breathing exercises like the Seals do when they have to sleep.
Window sit, that is if you do not have to go to visit the restroom every hour.
T Bucgar 😅 That is definitely something to consider!
I think to get a good sleep at economy class is to buy business class 😉
I know this is supposed to be a joke but just shut the fuck up
I also think that is the best way.Unless the aeroplane is not full and you can take 3 or 4 seats for you only.Difficult task but Who knows.....
Wow it was nice to know these tips but you forgot to mention the most important tip and that is how to get an upgrade lol 😂
It seems like every international flight I take to Japan, Korea or to Australia, there is a newborn infant intermittently crying and waking me up.
