Definitely take entertainment! I was assigned a seat on a full plane to Europe that had no light or electronics (no movies, etc) - nothing, nada. It was a very long flight, just listening to podcasts. When I got home a bought a Kindle, which I love. Battery lasts a very, very long time in airplane mode. No blue light like your phone has (that can disturb sleep). You can have lots of books (you can even borrow from your local library). I also find an iPad is great if you have room to carry it. Load it with movies & shows you download before you go.

I leave Wednesday for a bucket-list trip/birthday present--to-self (I'll turn 60 in Cairo). I've always liked a window seat, although I can see your point about disturbing your neighbors. I'll watch the jet lag video even though I paid for an extra hotel night ahead of my pre-trip to Jordan to recover (a first for me). At 23 days, it will be my longest trip by far to date. I hope I don't regret it :) I guess one thing is positive. the travel company had originally booked me on different airlines, but changed a while back...I was going to be flying Doha to Dallas non-stop to return home. A 16-hour flight!!! Now my longest leg is "only" 9 1/2 hours.

I don't usually bring a neck pillow for flights less than 8hrs. However for my trip to Korea and to Thailand it was an absolute must. I have arthritis is my lower spine and sitting down for long periods of time can be very painful. I used the pillow the airline provided for my head, and my neck pillow to sit on. The shape of the neck pillow is the perfect shape to sit and relieve stress from the lower spine. It comes with a strap so attaching it to my carry-on bag was simple and hands free. I also have a small portable foot hammock that fits easily in my carry-on. It straps around the tray table and enables you to get your feet up and off the ground if your legs get restless. I also plan my entertainment to keep from getting bored. Movie, book, rest, eat/ book, eat, movie, rest.....

I find that bringing a packable jacket on the flight has been super helpful, i have a packable long winter jacket that somehow folds into a small cylindrical bag. Which makes an excellent pillow and is a hundred times better than a blanket if the plane is absolutely freezing. And in the event my destination happens to have chilly weather, I have a jacket just in case

Another option I've found to be quite useful is wearing a thick/chunky long duster when flying (one of those sweater-robe things). I got one at Zara this past winter that almost reaches my feet and if quite oversized and thick (and it was on sale for like $35). It's not as convenient as the packable jacket, but covers me from head to toe and is a lot more stylish. I sometimes bring both if I anticipate needing a pillow and a blanket

A 10 hour international flights leaving a tropical climate & I walked onboard in shorts. I sat next to a flight attendant who told me I would freeze. Well a few hours before we landed I did a midflight strip & changed into my trackie dacks - I was warm again & fell asleep until had breakfast. I learned to add earplugs & an eye mask. Huge difference in my travel. I bought a few refillable squeeze water bottles to fill up after I clear security. Yes I learned to bring extra food as often the meals are dry.

43 hours coming back from Cape Town. CPT to JNB and then JNB to Doha on Qatar Airlines and finally Doha to Miami on Qatar. Getting the front row in any section of economy is a must. Or an exit row. Only rows that allow you to stretch out. They cost more but if you are flying 14 hrs like I was on my last leg they are a God send. Premium Economy is a dream, think business class light, but it can get expensive.

As an Australian, we face 24 hour trips to get to the UK and Europe and business class really is the only way to go (provided you can afford it). Otherwise, it's very common for Australians to break the journey with a stopover somewhere in Asia such as Singapore (if flying Qantas) or Hong Kong (with Cathay Pacific).

In 2018 I flew Qantas QF1 Sydney to London with a short transit in Singapore. It took 24 hours. Coming back on QF10 London to Perth non stop took 17 hours then QF10 travelled onto Melbourne and that’s another 3.5 hours. The cost of return business class was AU$7,000.

I've got somewhat sensitive skin, so I use unscented or lightly scented baby wipes! I get a couple of small packs of them. One for on the plane and another as back up in case we use them all up at some point. Because during the trip I use them to clean my hands before eating or something when no bathroom is easily available. Or if you're out hiking or walking and get feeling kind of sweaty or gross... quick little clean up similar to what I do on the plane before we land.
I also don't mess with a refillable water bottle anymore. Afterall, any bottle with a lid can be refillable if you want it to be. So I just wait and buy a bottle of water somewhere and keep refilling that throughout. Then, if I get somewhere that won't allow it inside, I can just chunk it. Or if I just get tired of carrying it while we're out and about, chunk it. No worries about losing it either.
Airplane food... "... I always eat it because I'm a pig and I like free things." Lmfao! Same. Though I will bring some roasted nuts along for the ride sometimes. Semi healthy-ish and more filling than chips or pretzels or whatever.
I got some compression socks before our last trip at the end of 2023 and I will never do long flights again with out them! No stiffness or swelling!
I swear by noise cancelling earbuds instead of headphones. Also, the Trtl neck pillow! As someone who cannot get sleep in a sitting position (plane, train, or car), the Trtl is a lifesaver. It fits easily into most bags and it keeps my head up so I can actually get a lil bit of sleep. Also keeps your nose warm on those really chilly flights. Those plane pillows are useless for me. A neck pillow is the only way I can get any sort of sleep on a flight (in economy anyway).

Fits in the other water bottle sleeve and is really quite nice. I intend to use their pillow behind my lower back. I have heard this is helpful for lower back pain. You're a young guy.....Also, I'm wondering how i will like the whole sensory deprivation thing being neurodiverse. I'm guessing no. I tend to like the window seat as it gives you one side where you don't need to see someone. OTOH, that whole not being able to get up as easily....but I love the little space it gives you, though window open is not usually a thing on international flights--but the sky is relaxing.

One problem with sitting on the aisle for long haul flights is when you’re trying to sleep, passengers, flight attendants walk back and forth (even when the lights are dimmed) so it’s a bit disruptive. I have a hard time sleeping, if I’m close to drifting off to sleep and someone walks by, it wakes me up. I prefer to avoid those seats on overnight flights and take a window seat.

I find loose socks are good, coupled with canvas shoes. You mention compression socks at 2:31 which is another good suggestion. It happened to me for the first time in over 40 years of flying, whereby my ankles swelled up after a 13-hour flight. It took a few days for them to go down. The cause was tight-fitting socks that cut off the circulation.

I try not to check the time at all during the flight. It has definitely helped to think "this is my living area for the next while, and wake me up when the pilot announces getting ready for landing". Checking the time every five minutes will drive you crazy! Focus on getting comfortable and staying comfortable until landing... Also, the aisle seats are my favorite for getting in and out of my seat. However, if the aisles are too narrow on the plane, and there are larger people walking through, I always end up getting bumped a few times by the attendants, other passengers, and even the food cart. This could be annoying to say the least.

I travel often to South America or Europe. In fact, I leave Monday for Europe for 9 weeks. I can’t sleep well at all on planes, so the last couple trips to Europe I leave 5-6pm and just suck it up and stay awake for the trip. It has worked so far. I already do most of your tips, but not the business class unfortunately!

Instead of a neck pillow, I take a tip from the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy … bring a towel. Rolling it up and putting it behind your head is a great pillow. AND it’s super easy to pack. If you’re cold it can be used as a blanket.

In the top of my personal item bag I carry a gallon zip lock bag that contains disinfectant wipes, baby wipes, hand sanitizer, toothbrush/paste, mouthwash, lotion, chapstick, eye drops, cough drops. I have a ziplock quart bag for single size snacks, protein bars, jerky, nuts etc. Some long flights had exercise videos where the entire plane was doing over head stretches, knee raises, etc.

Living in New Zealand just about every flight (except Australia) is long haul I recommend also being able to raise and lower your feet by being able to put your backpack under the seat in front and roll up your jersey or hoody as a neck pillow if you find the airline one is too small. I usually go for a window seat and stuff my bulky clothing against the window / wall as this gives me a little more sleeping space. Book flights that make you sleep ie leave at night time and try to arrive early morning. It doesn't matter which country you leave from going from here Auckland to Dubai 17hrs take the 8.30pm you then find your body will adjust while you sleep you arrive around 5am there time but it will feel like 9 or 10am to your body. Conversely flying from LA to Auckland 13-14hrs leave a little later say 10:30pm you again will arrive around 6am but will feel like its still around 8am

Lol I said it on another one year post. My vote is yes her neck pillows try to use the blankets and pillows they provided and they do not just work for me but instead of the ordinary neck pillows that are big and bulky, you can get inflatable ones that fold down when have no air in them to the side of a napkin or handkerchief in your pocket, and they come in various textures on the outside it’s similar to the floaty devices to go around the kids arms when swimming

    • @awaytogether
      @awaytogether  Рік тому

I agree with most but disagree on the neck pillow. As someone with musculoskeletal issues, the neck pillow is not only a lifesaver in terms of avoiding pain, it helps me get to sleep and I find I sleep twice as much with a neck pillow compared to without. If you’re worried about the bulk, get a memory foam one and compress it down into a packing cube before you fly

  • @jennasmith4830

I have often heard the advice to wear your bulky items onto the plane. However, once you get to your destination, you have to have somewhere to pack all the big stuff if you're traveling to more than one place. By the 4th day of our recent adventure, I had a pile of stuff I wish I didn't bring & limited space in my suitcase.

    Thanks for this video :)
Im a frequent flyer, living in Germany and taking flights to Buenos Aires (14 hours from Frankfurt being lucky) and I bought a Bose headphones similar to the ones you shown on this video, they are really a good investment BUT in my opinion, when it comes to a long trip such as the one I mentioned, I find them a bit uncomfortable when you have a windows seat, as you cant properly lay your head on a side, they feel quite bulky. Some days ago I bought the apple airpods and I will give a try in the next month. Of course the noise cancelling is not as good a the big Bose, but I fin them comfortable when moving your head in different positions.
Last comment, I think you should consider the windows seats, as you can stuck there a pillow or a pile of jackets and have some better "sleeping"
Again, thanks for the video :)

Hmm...I don't quite get the neck pillow recommendation. We have a couple of old *inflatable* neck pillows that are a great compromise between comfort and portability. Are they as comfortable as the memory foam pillows? No... However, they take a negligible amount of room when deflated.

7 Hours is not a long haul flight! - Try two 14 hour flight with a five hour layover.
    1. There are travel jeans available. They are lightweight, quick drying, stretchy, have security pockets, and are designed to be comfortable for hours of sitting etc. The advantage of travel jeans is that you don't stand out as a tourist and jeans can be dressed up enough for restaurants etc, and in places they are the only pair of long trousers you need to take with you.
    2. Don't worry about track pants etc in cattle class as all the people in business class are wearing nothing but pyjamas!
    3. Often with a good research and perhaps using lesser known airlines it is possible to purchase buisness class seats/beds at only slightly more cost than economy seats.
    4. When you fly business you don't need to carry eye masks, earphones, ear plugs, slippers, comfortable loungewear etc as all these are supplied at no extra cost. You also save at the airport as you don't have to buy any food or coffee or a beer etc as these too are provided in your ticket price.
    4. Carry-on only is the only way to go!

@@cindyloppnow1621 I’m fine when I wake up seven hours later. Sometimes I wake mid-sleep, impelled by my bladder to walk the aisle to the restroom without no problem- perhaps a slightly disassociated feeling.
In the unlikely event of an emergency I believe adrenaline would brush aside the cobwebs. My flight will be 10 hours. I would not take it for anything less that an eight hour flight.
But that’s me! No “hangover. I only take such a long flight every two or so years. If I flew frequently I would definitely NOT use it for fear of becoming dependent. Using it infrequently means it works well; I’ve developed no tolerance nor psychological dependence.
But individual reactions vary, of course.
If you have tried it and it left you groggy, well, that is a very unpleasant feeling. I’d rather feel sleepy than groggy. Try it at home first.
