    Sir you are an absolute legend , I was struggling so badly for over an hour and I decided to go indoors and have a coffee. I found this video finished my coffee and within 15 minutes it was done. I removed the steering column to remove the ESL which has an intermittent fault.
    Unfortunately I'm in Manchester UK otherwise I would get an Emulator fitted by you.
    Once again thank you for the video I am now a subscriber.

    I dreaded this part. Especially because it was like 5 degrees when I removed it. For days I wondered if I could do it since I seen so many people on UA-cam and MB websites. When I reinstalled, it was very simple since I was aware of the grooves and materials it was made of. This video would have been a better investment of my time. I spent a few hours researching it online. You making this video is amazing for people tackling this now. Again, Michael I appreciate your esl emulator service. It has been peace of mind for us with the GLK in these Midwest freezing temperatures. Great video! For anybody watching, I highly recommend Michael for helping you tackle this problem in your Mercedes Benz.

    This part of the process was extremely difficult for me... I did damage the splines on first attempt (that didn't take much). I ended up needing to take out the upper steering coupler, attached to the u joint, bring it inside to a well lit space and use a needle file to fix the splines. Even after doing this very thoroughly, it was still binding at about halfway in. To get it the rest of the way I needed to use a mini crowbar/screwdriver to force the u joint to be a little more loose, I then had to apply a bit of heat to the u-join using a small propane torch that I have (in Minnesota the garage was 25 degrees), and then use a block of wood propped behind the break pedal as a lever point to push the u-joint the rest of the way on.
    If I had watched this video first I likely never would have damaged the splines and may have had a much easier time with this.

      How did you do that?

      You can pull the bottom coupler all the way out. Just pull on it by hand. It comes out. Then put these two pieces together on the bench. After they are put together, install the whole unit. The coupler that goes through the floor is much easier to line up than the U-joint.

    How do you take the aluminum piece off. Isn't it part of the joint

    • @mercedesbenzspecialist
      @mercedesbenzspecialist  3 місяці тому

      The u joint does not come off separately. You can however, pull out the whole lower steering shaft. It goes through the floor into the steering coupling. If you cannot get these two pieces to line up inside the vehicle. Pull the whole shaft out and line it up on a bench.

    Is this the same connection that goes to the power steering rack?

      Look for a used one at a local dismantler or eBay.
