That's a tough call, Jamie. I almost went with the Emerald, 'til the end when you went back and forth quickly, then they sounded so much the same. Well, bottom line is, you could make a string on a broomstick sound good, so I'm gonna call it a tossup.
If you can play fingerstyle and have a basic knowledge of notes then it is pretty easy to play. There aren't too many resources for learning that I know of so you kinda of to teach yourself. I know Stephen Bennett sells tabs for his songs, but I haven't bought any of his
Wow being two years late to the party I’d say they are equally good at different things. I can see why you’d want to have both in your bag of tricks, my opinion kept shifting depending on which one you were playing. Very well done!
Personally I would prefer the Emerald. It sounds more interesting, the materials are less likely to struggle with warping, humidity issues, and intonation, and the design is absolutely stunning.
I really appreciate this comparison, well done and I know from this and your other videos you’re a great player. I am about to buy the Emerald. They both sound really good so the decision comes down to touring. I fly as much as 150K miles/year for my gigs so the carbon makes sense. I was frankly very pleased to know that acoustically the Emerald was just as good. This was really helpful, thank you. ...and your playing inspires me to learn more.
Wow each have their unique sound and place in tone amazing instruments both. Personally though its hard to beat the crisp sound of the tonedevil wood though. But the real amd most important to remember although they are differences in instruments. The one playing them and their level of talent is what really makes an instrument sing. A true master can take a toy off a Wall- Mart shelf and make it sound good. Jamie you are one of those Masters.
They both have great sound but the ToneDevil has more resonance and sustain. It also doesn't need any electric signals to make it sound better. The Sound of the ToneDevil is better because it doesn't seem to require anything but a competent player while the Carbon fiber is a work of Art and when it is plugged in it sounds tremendous. They both are very quality instruments but in the end I would choose the Tonedevil overall because the only need for it is a competent player to make it sound great.
Man that emerald harp looks amazing with the carbon fiber design but the tonedevil totally lives up to its name in my opinion. They both sound great but the tonedevil has that more naturally acoustic tone I like to hear. I have an Ovation Celebrity that sounds a bit like the emerald to me. It's phenomenal when plugged in, but acoustically it's just missing some of that life that I hear in a more traditionally designed wooden acoustic. Thanks for doing this video!
They both sound so beautiful. Thank you for showing us the difference in this video. I'm thinking of buying one because I love to play the guitar and I'm ready for a challenge and I love the sound too.
I'm going for the Emerald , but it is a really close call !!! Thanks for making my musical life so difficult !! It's a personal choice , both are amazing, but i think the projection of the Emerald would suit me and the combo i play in, which is a Jazz environment .. both these instruments are 100% the best ..
I loved it! Great video of both instruments and I really appreciated the side by side comparison. Can't wait for your next review, as I am trying to decide which way to go on my harpguitar purchase. Ty. 😁
Hey Jamie! Looking great! Hope this info gives your followers an insight as to how you play & do what you do best, is entertain us!!!! Always a joy to watch your vids & listen to your music. Much love!
The difference is not that big for me as I thought first. I like the little bit more woody sound of the Tonedevil, but would go with the Emerald. I think the carbon version's better for the stability of all these strings over time and has tighter bass. I'm on the way to order a Emerald Harp Guitar with 7 bass strings, fanned frets and the 8 treble harp strings too. Was in contact today, great instruments and fast answering of questions.
i dont have a harp guitar. but i own a carbon and a wood guitar within the same price reach. and i think the wood guitar sounds much more "alive" while the carbon is louder and more crisp. carbon feels very different too, so i would recomend trying both materials at a store
The carbon fiber one has a more "Closed" sound, where as the wooden one has a wooden classic "Ring" acoustical tone to it. Both sound great! I imagine the "Type" of music being played, example, wood/folk and blues to Carbon Fiber/modern or romantic and sweet music. Also has to go by what your pocket-book let's you do. Not in the price-range of saving your milk and egg money to buy it. Probably have to go sell the old modle-T. You did a very nice video comparison. Thank you...and you play so WELL. Thanks, from Bill in Tennessee, 🇺🇸
I was trying to figure out why the Emerald was projecting more as I couldn't identify the tone hole. Then when you did the scan of the bodies, I could see it. While the Tonedevil is a mellower sound, if I were going to be on stage, I would want the Emerald as it does get the sound out there better than the Tonedevil. I don't think you could go wrong with either, but I'm putting in my vote for the Emerald. As you know, what really makes the difference is the one who plays it (which is why I enjoy every song you do and have all your albums). So keep on playing!!
I am partial to the Tonedevil ... likely because it has a more natural sound because the wood warms the mid and lower notes . Are the strings the same age ? But I bet the carbon fibre would be better travelling on the road
Hello Jamie! First, allow me to compliment you on another fantastic composition. The Tone Devil has a better sound for the majority of the piece, but the Emerald has the best tone for the harmonics you played near the end. Songs in minor keys have always been my favorites. Thank you for sharing your gift.
I preferred the tonedevil for response to your playing, but personally the emerald is more appealing to me as having a stable guitar I’m not worried about traveling with is more useful at this time. It’s apples and oranges to me, they serve different purposes. I think I would always prefer to record on a all wood guitar though. I would like to see the players perspective on the neck profiles and heel joints in the next comparison video! The playing in this video was great for getting a good listen to the capabilities of each harp guitar and how they respond!
Mate, what a great comparison vid! When I saw Scott Grove demo his Rainsong 6 string I was gobsmacked by the clarity. The same goes here but they both have their own flavour! I luv em both, especially with your playing! \m/ Oh and a thumbs down, really?
Wish my hearing was good enough to tell the difference. Did notice a couple teeny notes of diiferential and a wee bit in the overa tone to know they were different but love the sound of either. Thanks
Thank you Mr. Dupuis. Both are aweaome harp guitars but I just couldnt afford either one. So I got me a Timberline T20 for 800 bucks. Suits me just fine.
Nice playing. I have an Emerald Amacus and love it, and am considering getting a harp. The Tonedevil looks great, but I don’t like the pickup stuck on the front.
we liked both , perhaps the tonedevil had a warmer natural tone , but the emerald sounded a tad bit modern and tonally precise . again we enjoyed both , we think the emearld would make up any tonal differences when electrically amplified . we attended a cello concert where the celloist had both wood and carbon fiber , we liked both , the concert was live and in a wonderful acoustically setting we were satisfied of both cello's sound qualities . overall wood and carbon fiber will have differences ,giving wood a more natural warm tone.
Thank you so much for posting this; I’ve wondered how they compare for some time. I personally would go with the Tonedevil simply because with the sound quality being so close between it and the Emerald, I can’t rationalize paying the higher cost for the carbon fiber technology (plus the freight to import from overseas) that you would to buy the Emerald. Both are great pieces, though; not a bad choice to have to make.
Wonderful test, thank you. The wooden one sounds more like I expected the instrument to sound, and the carbon fiber one sounded more piano-like, especially in the bass. Both are wonderful sounding. Do you have a preference Jamie, or are you just happy to have both :-) ?
Hi Mark, I’ve enjoyed them all really. But nowadays I play the timberline the most. Although the others are great also. I played the Emerald at a show just a few days ago where it was cold and I had a little heated, no problems whatsoever, carbon fibre is very tough. The wood ones wouldn’t do well in the cold. They all have their purpose!
Wow Jamie tough call . I closed my eyes the second time I watched and had a really hard time distinguishing, but the tonedevil has a slightly deeper sound . You make both sound amazing and at the end , I was about to change my mind , but I'm going with the wood.
The tone devil has a little more midrange and bass, the emrald to me was more transparent, but very even from lows to highs. Would different mic placement made any difference for the emrald, with that sound hole in a different place, I like them both , i have to go for the tone devil. Would like to have heard the timberline in the mix. I really like the sound of that guitar
I may be a little biased, as a fellow owner of an Emerald Guitar co creation. But I'd have to say the Emerald Harp guitar takes the cake. I especially liked the smooth rounded reverb it was emitting at the end. Compared to the Tonedevil S12, which I thought had a fast, almost tremolo reverb; at the end of the video.
Emerald sounds better to me. I own an X7 (small body parlor size). I can get harmonics easier and they seem more rich and clear. I bought it just to travel with and was pleasantly surprised at how fine an instrument it is. My best acoustic guitar!
So close. I know it’s subjective and personal opinion, but I would have to choose the Emerald. It sounds great and looks great and is practically indestructible. I would bet that it stays in tune better too. All things to consider if you are going to travel with it as well. Nice video.
The Emerald is just a bit thinner but way better than I expected "not plugged in". Like the overall tones of both of them. I was wondering, on the Emerald it looks like the Harp strings are marked? I can see a small black ring in two places. Did you put them there for harmonic markings or am I just seeing things? Thanks again Jamie. Awesome as usual
Jamie it's so great to finally hear you talk. I'm a huge fan. I have a question. What is the scale length of each bass string from bridge to tuner. I'm going to build a solid body electric version because I can't afford either of these great instruments you have demonstrated, but would like to try my hand at playing a harp guitar. To answer your question : I like the carbon fiber sound better.
If I had to choose a favorite I would say the Tone Devil. It has a real Classical Flamenco tone to it, like a nylon string guitar, beautiful rich bass tone/timbre in the guitar and harp section. The Emerald also has a beautiful sound, but different. Crisper, higher tones, sounding more like a modern Steel string Flat top (Ibanez/yamaha) but still with a lovely crisp bass on the harp side. Unplugged, the Emerald doesn't quite have the deep resonance of the Tone devil. Both wonderful instruments to listen to in the hands of the maestro though so hard to choose. Each have excellent characteristics depending on what you want to play. I would say the tone devil for classical/flamenco style and the Emerald if you are looking for a more Rock/modern country sound. Thanks for the comparison. Conclusion - Unplugged - the Tone devil is hard to beat...
I believe I mentioned I have “acute hearing range.” On The Tonedevil Harp Guitar I’m hearing deeper tones than the Emerald. The Emerald sounds slightly higher in tone. Sharper. Just my opinion.
*For this laymen's uneducated ear, my choice is the Tonedevil for my **#TwoSense**; specific to this 'unplugged' example only, and assuming an amplified recital could offer quite a different outcome.*
Both sound good, my guess is carbon fiber would have less up keep. Wood is nice, and renewable, but you have to take care of it or it will eventually fall apart.
Name a reasonable price my friend and I'll buy them both...LOL The Tonedevil and the Emerald are both harp guitars with an unique sound, and depending on the kind of songI would choose one ore the other.... can't make a decision... sorry ;-) What I do know Jamie is that you are a real grandmaster on those instruments !!! Keep on hitting those 12 strings! Bert
Wow hard choice are you playing the same brand strings on both of them? The carbon Emerald has a more cleaner sound and the tone devil has more of a thicker bass sound. I think I like the emerald better
Jamie, love your work and HARP Guitar.Told me my 500.00 harp guitar was junk like me,and I should send it back to China. If I bought a tone devil and detuned it to say, slack A, a d g c e a,Tone Devil would take it back and fine me.!!!!Still playing the fiddle w/o the drum here in poor America.!.! Old Chris a fiddler and greeter of Albuquerque NM
The carbon guitar is much clearer, louder and probably can be whaled upon by the player with less fear of a crack or a break. The wooden guitar is traditional looking and has a more mellow quiet voice. Just my opinion.

Intonation sound a little off on the emerald. Like them both . I think the the Devil sound cleaner and warmer
s-12
I prefer the sound of the 2nd one.
Both.... & How dare you try
to make us choose...... 😘
Now meld them together... 🌻
NEVER MIND Meow... 😹😹😹
Hmmm, tough choice. I think the Emerald sounds a bit thinner and since I rather have “real” wood, I think I’m gonna go with the Tonedevil. 🤔
I'd like both. Couldn't play either.

The Emerald appeared to have slightly more resonance, to my ear. Both very similar overall. Differences were so subtle.
They both sound so beautiful. Thank you for showing us the difference in this video. I'm thinking of buying one because I love to play the guitar and I'm ready for a challenge and I love the sound too.
The Emerald is my favorite! Thanks for accepting me on fb today too. I'm so honored 🤘🤘

Definitely a fan of the Tonedevil. What it lacks in looks it makes up for in sound. The Emerald looks good, but is too soft sounding.
I believe I mentioned I have “acute hearing range.” On The Tonedevil Harp Guitar I’m hearing deeper tones than the Emerald. The Emerald sounds slightly higher in tone. Sharper. Just my opinion.
The tone devil, wood and warm. The emerald was good , brighter a little more percussive. I just like the tone devil better.
I think the Emerald is my favourite but i liked the natural sound of the tonedevil. Bty what is the song you're playing?
*For this laymen's uneducated ear, my choice is the Tonedevil for my **#TwoSense**; specific to this 'unplugged' example only, and assuming an amplified recital could offer quite a different outcome.*
They are both great sounding, I like the tone devil better ,it has more midrange, the emerald is more scooped. Really like the look of the emerald.
I prefer both, because they would sound different pending on the song choice, their both incredible 😎
Loving the Emerald.
thanks for the nice video info 👍👍👍
I like both but the Tone Devil gets my vote. It sounds warmer.
Both sound good, my guess is carbon fiber would have less up keep. Wood is nice, and renewable, but you have to take care of it or it will eventually fall apart.
I closed my eyes, and really listened. Personally, I liked the Tonedevil. The wood makes all the difference. That isn’t to say I don’t enjoy both.
What song is he playing, it sounds amazing... and shazam couldn't find it
Tone devil resonates beautifully
What song is this. And I'd say the tonedevil it sounds much softer in comparison to the other one
Can you do master of puppets on the harp guitar?
Tough call but And i wanted the emerald to win but I really think the tone devil has a slight edge
Have to go with the Tonedevil. Seems to be deeper and richer. The other would have it's unique sound for specific songs though I believe.
Name a reasonable price my friend and I'll buy them both...LOL
The Tonedevil and the Emerald are both harp guitars with an unique sound, and depending on the kind of songI would choose one ore the other.... can't make a decision... sorry ;-)

This or Fender squier ??
For me, The Tonedevil is smooth sound, The Emeral is more metalic sound, but I enjoy all of them.
The sound holes give more projection in all ranges. Deeper bass and clearer treble on the Tonedevil. Real wood wins
Tonedevil for me. But there is nothing wrong with the Emerald. They both contain lots of carbon. Just different manufacturing processes.
Tonedevil has a much warmer velvety sound ... I like it very much ...
Emerald is more "pop" ...
WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ...?
:)
Is this the first time hes spoken in his videos?
Tone devil; the Emerald is oh so slightly brighter but not the crucial mid low depth
Tone devil is the one, but I guess it could matter more to what song your playing too. ;)
I like them both to be honest
The carbon guitar is much clearer, louder and probably can be whaled upon by the player with less fear of a crack or a break. The wooden guitar is traditional looking and has a more mellow quiet voice. Just my opinion.
Still waiting for black betty
What are its bottom six strings tuned to ?
EGABCD you can tune sharp or flat depending on the key
I'm shocked that the carbon fiber one gives the other a run for it's money. The traditional wood one wins, imo, but both of them sound wonderful!
💛💛💛💛
Tonedevil sounds more alive but both sound good .
Tonedevil 👍
Tone devil seems to have a fuller sound
He can talk!
I prefer the sound of the Tonedevil….but I’m certainly not an expert
now compare them plugged in... only then, can a true comparison be made...👌
Emerald. I imagine when a harp guitar gets humidity or temperature issues it gets very ugly.
✨🎶💛🎶✨
Thanks Kat!
Jamie Dupuis 🌻🎶🎶🎶
The black one sounded kind of "tinny" to me. Not as deep.
Wood no doubt...
Emerald
Ye are all tonedevil!
Yeah emerald sounds worse but its som much more comfortable.
They sound a lot like my iPad speakers
Wood is better the other is to bright
Talking stops at 1:47
Hmmmmmmmmmm! I think you should have had a blind taste test.
Tonedevil👍
