A good chunk of the comments are rather similar so I thought I'd address some of them here: -To all of you who were also greatly effected and inspired by this film, I'm glad you feel the same! -For all of you asking what I think of Interstellar, personally it's mid to low tier Nolan for me. Not as epic as the Dark Knight Trilogy, not as intimate as Insomnia and not as successfully intricate as the Prestige although the Footage reaction scene is one of Nolan's best. -Having also seen Paprika and being a big Satoshi Kon fan, I probably should have at least name dropped that film as one of Inception's biggest influences, my bad. -I'll also say it seems that the younger or should I say less seasoned film fans saying they also love this film have gotten a bit of slack for not having watched enough films or older films and although I wouldn't express it in such a demeaning way, furthering your education as a film fan is always a good thing and watching more and more both older and from other countries is essential in my opinion, hence my many videos on the topic. So to all newer film fans, happy watching! -Finally, to work off off that topic, there's a small group of people trying to flex their "film knowledge" superiority. One or two of them do make brilliant points about younger self proclaimed fans not really fully appreciating the history of the medium and only watching the popular and generic modern films which I completely agree with. But then there are a bunch of buffoons treating it like a dick measuring contest. These are almost definitely the fools who were shown one Orson Welles or Billy Wilder film in a media class once and bought a Pulp Fiction poster for their bedroom and now think they're better than others as a result. Don't entertain their ego :)
Hahah that last point... Question: do you think Inception should have gotten all the Oscars it was nominated for? Especially best score and best screenplay. Nolan wrote that shit when he was 16 and he did the dark night series TO PRACTICE large scale action movies!!! This was a lifetime project for him. When they didn't give him these Oscars, that year I stopped caring about the Oscars. And I was still an aspiring filmmaker at the time! Also you didn't mention how Hans Zimmer's soundtrack is the wakeup song slowed down. Such an important Easter egg! And besides having so many effects done in camera, it was also shot on actual film, right? Great video, great homage to a fantastic movie ❤️
Soooo I rewatched Inception and something has been SOOOO OVERLOOKED! I think he’s in limbo and its in the final scenes of the film... Michael Caine appears in the shot and then disappears in the final shot, i dont think it was the editing too... 😐 At the door, then just gone.... i know Nolan teases the totem but maybe to throw us a curve ball and not see the full scene ??!!!! Im conspiring but i mean.... Nolan teases things in the film that you can only see in multiple viewings, 🤔🤔🤔😅. Tenettttttt ^ 🤔
Inception was a movie my father hyped up for me for a few years always trying to explain the plot to me before I was old enough to watch it. Eventually we did watch it together, it blew my mind and became my favorite film. Since I've watched this film with many different friends and it becomes sort of a ritual thing to go through together, to watch something so mind bending and imaginative. My dad passed away a few years ago but this film is something I will always have and my love of it is owed all to him. Rest in peace Dad. Great video man.
You're obviously very young then, considering this film only came out ten years ago. Bearing this in mind all I'd say is don't be put off exploring films of the 90s, 80s or even early 2000s. Just because these films were made before you were born doesn't mean that you won't enjoy them. Cinema has changed such a lot in the last ten or 15 years or so. I'm only in my early 30s so I'm hardly an old codger but even I can recognise this. Nowadays only comic book /Sci Fi Movies get made and dramas /thrillers get ignored. They don't make movies like Silence Of The Lambs, Seven, Goodfellas, Sleepers, Falling Down anymore coz East Asian audiences aren't interested in them. The Matrix is a great Sci Fi movie as is the original Jurrasic Park but I'm always surprised how many youngsters have never watched them simply because they were made before they were born. THAT'S A GOOD POINT ABOUT MOST OF NOLANS FILMS ACTUALLY. TIME RELATIVITY ISN'T JUST A SCIENCE FICTION THING, IT BECOMES MORE APPARANT THE OLDER YOU GET! LOL. 10 YEARS TO AN 18 YEAR OLD SEEMS LIKE A MASSIVE PERIOD OF TIME BUT 10 YEARS TO A 50 YEAR OLD OFTEN JUST SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY. I'VE NEVER HEARD HIM SAY BUT I WONDER IF THAT'S HIS OBSESSION WITH HOW WE EXPERIENCE TIME??
Alexander Gerber, I hope your dad obtains Sadgati. Don't stop watching films. Don't settle. Ever. Never become a fake fan or fake admirer like me. I haven't watched a film in past 5 months just because I don't have the guts to explain that I'm watching an important film on my phone. Whereas, my family members watch movies that treats its audience like incompetents on big screen TVs. Don't become a fake fan because you will melt down if you will face reality. If you could, pay for the cinema. Don't go downloading it on some website that gives it for free. Be a true believer in it, but never lose sensibility and shun all the reality. Never trade your interest in artistic films just because someone else is watching a movie or film that everyone is. Never join the herd in this aspect. When I first saw this movie I had a big existential crisis and for a good hour was worried whether the world is even real. Now that I’ve gotten over that I like the movie even more but idk if i’d want to do that again
Like 8% of guys are "colorblind," myself included. It doesn't seem to change much, unless you have an extremely rare version of colorblindness, particularly the monochromatic one where you literally cannot see color.
@@ethidian3444 same here brother except mine is kinda annoying. i have deuteranopia and it can be bad where like you know (at least i assume its the same where you are) caution lights when driving? how like when you drive and you have the lights if theyre orange you can go but red you have to stop? 90% of the time i cant tell the difference unless i judge it from other cars or get very close
@@space318 My dad had the same issue, he came over it with memorizing which is which. Fortunately his eyesight was very good though so he could tell the indicator from afar even though they were literally the same colors for him.
This was the first movie that made me realize the potential film has for story telling. It’s the first thing that made me realize that art can mean so much more than just entertainment. I still think about inception pretty often. It’s just perfect in all it’s imperfections. Making actual art on a big scale instead of just standard blockbuster films is my aspiration for the future. And inception kickstarted that. Nice overview and you just earned a sub from me :)
I remember the first time I saw the water rushing through the windows scene when Dom was dunked, and I remember being completely awestruck and the movie had only started. I knew I was in for something special. The only other movie that blew my mind like inception did was matrix.
@@philippmogg1549 I just watched Interstellar. It was a beautiful piece of art. Everything from the story to characters to the directing was outstanding. But what took the best part of the film was the mesmerising score. 9.5/10 or A+ in my book.

Please tell me that I wasn't the only one that started crying when Dom came out of the dream and was bewildered, looking at the whole world in childlike wonder, with Hans Zimmer playing in the background. It's moments like these that make me wish I could have seen the movie in theaters so I could share the experience with all the other movie goers, but I was only 4 when it came out. I only watched the movie for the first time 2-3 months ago, but I've watched it so many times now. I hope others will also love this movie the way i do. :) Alsoooo, stay safe during these times.

A masterpiece for sure. What I like about Nolan is that he creates movies that makes the audience think, analyze and admire. Which means he respects the audience.
Inception blew me away the first time I saw it. Just rewatched it over a decade since it's original release, and the third act is perhaps the best third act in all of cinema.
I just saw Arrival because of your comment, and waow what a movie! Interstellar is my fave too. If you havent seen The Prestige, i highly recommend it.
Just introduced my teenage daughter to Inception this evening. Haven’t watched in a while, and had me chuckling and sobbing in about equal measure. Really speaks to me as a keen observation on what we consider to be our reality, but also speaks to me as a father. Great video, capturing many parts of what makes this a great film. Ultimately, as you say, its about what we have to give up, as well as what we need to pursue, even if that pursuit may lead us into our own reality, which is not necessarily the reality of others.
If that last sentence of yours really sticks with you, I can highly recommend the philosophical sci-fi novel "Solaris" by Stanisław Lem. It explores topics like constructivism, cosmology, existentialism, fear, heuristics, hope, identity, matter, memory, mind, ontology, perception, psychology, reality, science. It has been adapted to film twice, and while I love both the Tarkovsky and the Soderbergh version, much has been shortened or got lost in translation in both of them.
Agreed. This film has everything. Here's what I put on Letterbox. "This is my personal favorite film of all-time and for good reason. People can continue to nitpick about the concept of the idea of dreams and subconscious but it really, in the end, is just a well-told love story. Mal doesn't believe in reality because of Cobb, and she kills herself trying to find that reality, putting the guilt onto Cobb making him feel bad for his kids and because he made a huge mistake. This is the kind of story I personally love and all the technical aspects of this films are phenomenal (Directing, Editing, Writing, Cinematography, VFX, Production Design, etc.)"
Here is why I think the ending is real, because as Cob said, in a dream, you don't know how you got there. Cob knew he came from the plane, went through the airport, and arrived at his house to see his kids. The inception spinny thing (forgot the name) also started wobbling and was (I think) going to tumble.
I just watched this movie last night and I’m completely obsessed with it, my absolute favorite movie. Everything about it was executed perfectly, the score, characters, conscious vs subconscious conflict, and thematic purpose. I’m now more intrigued with the storytelling that films have to offer. I don’t know which film to watch after this masterpiece, but I guess I’ll have to give whiplash a try. Thank you for creating this fantastic video!

One thing I was amazed by on my most recent rewatch is that, despite being 12 years old now, because of it's use of mostly analogue props, general lack of modern technology, and lack of pop culture references to other things of the time, Inception is not dated at all.
Inception has such a deep emotional impact for me; whether it be the adventurous journey, the simple yet deep levels the film dives into, or just Hanz Zimmer tugging at my heart as usual, this movie lives in my head rent free, and will for the rest of my life. Oh, and the wake up scene, I was baffled, I had no words, just utter euphoric nostalgia. Absolute materpiece and will forever appreciate everyone who took part in creating such an iconic film.
It's A Movie where we cannot express or put in words . This movie has so much to offer so much, emotion, action,so many phases and folds,characters, brilliance and most of all it makes you think to the core that every time you watch we never get over it ... I love Inception so much that I dnt want any other movie to made like this or better than this...
To me this film has something that makes it extremely special which is something you mention: the ambiguity. This film lets us choose as spectators, it gives us a certain freedom of deciding the things we want to believe. I know that maybe what we believe is not the same as Nolan's vision but that's the beauty of it. We don't know exactly what Cobol engineering is, we don't know exactly what Cobb did for them and in the end we don't know exactly whats going on in dream and what isn't and all this just gives each individual a freedom of deciding for themselves what they choose to believe. And maybe it can even change our minds with every rewatch and to me this is truly special.
That's my favourite bit about the film. *SPOILER ALERT IF YOU CLICK READ MORE* The final scene where Cobb's totem looks like it's about to lose balance but before it can do anything the movie cuts was GENIUS! It points towards "reality is another dream" and "we're in reality" at the same time! Especially amazing because that tiny fact changes the morality of Cobb's inner conflict. All that represented in one top that didn't wanna fall. Nolan is a genius!
This is my favorite film, too. Some of DiCaprio's finest acting, and I adore the characters Arthur and Ariadne in particular though of course they're all brilliant (Cillian Murphy is a gift). My interpretation of the ending comes down to choice. Choice is a thread that runs through the film, particularly when it comes to Mal. When the lines between dreams and reality become so blurred, Mal's argument is that the distinction comes down to what you choose to believe. Because Dom walks away from the spinning top and towards his children, he is choosing this as his reality. So whether the top continues to spin or falls, it doesn't matter. Dom has made his choice.
I saw this with my best friend in the theaters. After it was over, we walked over to the Starbucks that was in the plaza to talk about it over coffee. We literally could not find words, as we took turns stammering to express what we just witnessed. Finally, I said "do you just wanna catch the next showing?" And so we did. We watched back-to-back showing. He and I are both film aficionados, and that was (to my knowledge, at least) the first and only time we both did that. Together. Such an amazing film.
Nolan makes some incredible films. But you also have to give major props to his casting choices. Each character seems so perfectly portrayed. Also can’t forget about him using hans zimmer in a lot of his movies
I remember first time watching this movie, I was terrified 😱😱 like watching a Jason movie. The thought of being trapped in your mind like unable to come back to "reality" was and still is a horrific thought to me. I getting chills just thinking about it 😬 great concept and movie💯

This movie completely changed my perspective on films as a whole. All star cast with one of the greatest directors ever AND the best movie musician (Hans Zimmer) ever
I've started taking films so seriously for the past 6-7 years and I've watched about 3000-4000 films...I have this fetish of rating films on 5 and out of all the films I've watched I have given 26 films full 5 stars...and out of these 26 films when arranged in Ascending order Inception is my all time favourite film followed by The Social Network and Grave of the Fireflies. I really thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this incredible video and just reminding me of my love for Inception and Cinema in general.

The moment I got my head around the layer upon layer of time within Inception was highly enjoyable and made for an incredible viewing experience. Bravo, Mr Nolan. Edit: watching films such as this raises the bar in my expectations for others to achieve in every aspect.
I am not exaggerated "I played Time maybe over 1000 times" Hans Zimmer is (in my opinion) the best composer. Glad you covered one of the best aspects of this truly masterpiece. It's in my favorite movies of all time (it's hard to pick a favorite movie, there are many ).
For Mr. Flick Fanatics and all the Inception fans - The genius of this film is that people think the final scene matters. That just being able to see if the top stays steady or falls would tell you whether Cobb is dreaming or not. This is Nolan performing inception...on you. The truth is that what the top does, fall or keep spinning, wouldn't have mattered and would NOT have told you whether Cobb is dreaming or not. - Totems are a concept introduced in the film as a way for the characters to know whether or not they are in someone else's dream. A totem is an everyday, mundane, object that all Dream Architects would be familiar with. However, the totem has some unique property or characteristic that is counter to the nature of the mundane object. Eame's poker chip has a misspelling, Ariadne's bishop always falls a certain direction, and Arthur's loaded dice always show the same result when rolled. This unique property is kept secret from everyone with the thought being that a dreamer or architect would never know to create these objects with these weird and unique properties. If you test the totem and they behave like the mundane object then you know you're in a dream. - There are two very important rules. 1) You can never share the unique behavior or your totem with anyone. Otherwise they could architect a dream where your totem behaved as you described and you'd have no way to know. And 2) Your totem must act in a weird or unique way in the REAL world. Otherwise you would not be able to distinguish your totem from a mundane object created by an architect. - Cobbs totem breaks BOTH of these rules. - His top is not even HIS totem at all. It's Mal's totem. That means he could be in a dream created by Mal and he would never know. She would know how the top is supposed to behave and could duplicate it. In fact, she could make the top keep spinning or fall to manipulate Cobb. Cobb even explains how his totem works to Ariadne, so he could also be in a dream SHE created. - But the second rule is really the one that shatters things for Cobb. The top's unique behavior happens IN DREAMS and NOT in the real world. Cobb claims that when he is in a dream the top keeps spinning indefinitely. When he is in the real world it behaves like a normal top and falls over. ANY dreamer or architect would instinctively create a top that falls over because that is how tops work in the REAL world. Cobb could literally be in ANYONE'S dream and not know it. - The top is Christopher Nolan implanting the idea in your head that the result of that spin would somehow matter. It doesn't and never did. I think that it IS important that Cobb is awake at the end, because throughout the movie he established that he won't look at his children's faces unless he is fully awake and, therefore, free. If Cobb is still dreaming at the end, that draws all happiness and relief from the reunion with his children, for he's actually submitted himself to the dream world, where he will be trapped in lies forever. Besides, we can hear the goddamn top tumble during the credits, so...
I think I've seen Inception probably 4 or 5 times now, but it's not like I mind--I don't ever need to watch it by myself, because what keeps it so much fun for me to watch is that a lot of my friends haven't seen it, so having them watch it one after another and hearing everyone's conjectures after the movie is so good. I'm so excited to show it to more people, because the movie is so uniquely pretty, sounds amazing, and just feels super authentic. Awesome video Flick Fanatics, definitely got my sub.

I just watched it again today after about 5 years, and dude it's extraordinary how such a complicated and multi-layered storyline can be made so easy to understand
First watched this film in May 2019 and I indeed did love it, but back then, even if it was only 1 year ago, I wasn't really into analysing movies at all or I knew much less about actors and directors. If I watched it now I would probably be much more amazed than the first time I saw it.

I had the pleasure of seeing this again at the cinema last week (10th anniversary screening) first film at the cinema since lock down and such a delight to be back in the theatre and such a masterpiece to return with.
In my opinion it's all a dream, not only all of the movie showed us but also the suposed life he had with mal, I think ariadne is a representation of how they really met in real life, as students experimenting with this concept, and they both got trapedand they formed their suposed life, so they never really knew eachother in real life, or get married and have children, all of that happened in the dream. And something I didn't even noticed until now, is that when he finally sees the face of his children at the end, it's in slow motion, a very subtle slow motion, if you know cristopher nolan, this is the only movie where he uses slow motion in his whole career, and the slow motion obviously represents the dream state, so yeah, how the hell I didn't noticed that in 10 years, damn. Anyway, those were my 5 cents.
Thank for this, Inception is one those rare movies I've watched multiple times, I won't say it's my favorite movie but it definitely is a masterpiece. Apart from the points you made, which I subscribe entirely, one thing peculiar of this movie, and I believe the one make it so popular for some people, is the actual rendition of a dream; even tho it's centered around DiCaprio's personal story, his acting is like 'suspended', it's more like we see the story through his perspective rather than him being at the center of the stage, he doesn't overshadow the rest of the cast, which is brilliant. My favourite shoot is near the end, when DiCaprio and Page are exploring limbo and turn into a court (I believe the scene was shooted in n. Africa) it's just a glimpse, but the light and framing is just so perfect: do I know that place? Have I been in that place before, a long time ago? Or was that part of an half forgotten dream? I have no idea how Nolan managed to tap into such inspiration, speaking of which: the soundtrack; apart from the egregious Hans Zimmer, what about Johnny Marr and the 'Dream is collpsing' intro? Just few chords and so much pathos, pure genius, how did he get there? I came to the conclusion that Inception is a dreamer movie, made by dreamers for dreamers, some people love it and others just can't stand it, I know I enjoyed every moment of it.

Other dreamer movies I like: - Adaptation - Being John Malkovich - Dark City - The Fall - Flatliners* - Living in Oblivion - Paprika - The Science of Sleep - Slacker - Strange Days - Stranger than Fiction - Total Recall* *In these cases NOT the awful remakes!
One of my favorites as well.. Easily in my top 10 movies of all time. Plus, it's the only movie soundtrack that I listen to from start to finish. I actually love driving while listening to it.
Great video man! You're really hyping us up to Tenet. Also Christopher Nolan himself has said that whether Cobb is dreaming or not doesn't really matter because he doesn't care to look at the top, serving as a resolution.
It's also literally an inception on the audience. It's an idea, distilled down to its simplest form, that forces the audience to see the movie in a completely different way.
I agree that score is amazing and one of the best in the way it enhances the film but I would like to point you to a film in which score goes way beyond that Vertigo (on Netflix now) the score not only enhances the film but actually helps to tell the story informing the viewer about what’s going on in ways no other film I’ve ever seen can come close to the score carries the whole thing and it’s possible that without it the film might not even make sense. It’s the peak of Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herman’s collaboratively careers and I think the best collaboration in cinema history.

I watched "Inception" for the first time on April 1st, and I instantly loved it. It took me some time to get invested in the movie, but as soon as I did, I enjoyed every second. It's one of the most emotional movies I've ever seen, and it also has one of the best scores. I have listened a lot to "Time" the last few weeks, and it always manages to give me chills. I already can't wait to watch it again to appreciate it even more!
Cobra Cinema yup I love the Dark Knight as well. It’s my favourite comic book film of all time. But inception is was original. New, nothing like it ever has been done before or since.
I have bought the original DVD of this movie in three times, because simply is amazing and I try to watch it on DVD player with audio and subtitles in English. The last 10 minutes are my favorites ones! I feel a rare emotion when Cobb woke up on airplane and he achieved his objective. Greetings from México 🇲🇽
For what it's worth, what I took away from the ending of inception is how much we crave for things to be real. We desperately yearn for our relationships to be genuine and have meaning beyond just our senses telling us so. We want the people we love to really be there and for our actions with them to carry on in them when we are gone. You say, "it doesn't matter if he was dreaming or not." To me, it's entirely the opposite. It's all that matters. We all want to live lives of truth and meaning. Not to get too philosophical, but the tragedy is, in some sense, we can never truly know if that's the case. And, to me, that's why the ending is so powerful. Thank you for putting together such a thoughtful video.
Agree. Story wise everything indicates that Cobb is not dreaming, so I think what Nolan was all about by deciding to finish the film with that final shot is plant the audience an idea that "Reality Matters". As human beings many times we are driven by the pursuit on what's real and what's not. Why after having a really good dream and waking up sometimes you find yourself sad or even deppressed for a certain time? because that fantasy you were part of during the dream could never be consumated in the real world, because you don't accept the dream world as your reality: it's silly and it's just a part of whole of what you're in the real world, so reality matters for us. We humans don't like uncertainty and with that ending you feel the need to go back and find the pieces to have a better grasp on things and confirm that he really is not dreaming, but I think what Nolan also intended is that you decide what storyline to follow: the one where he still dreaming or the one that is placed in reality, but what is certain at the end is that for Cobb, it doesn't really matter anymore, but like dreams have a film-like behavior Cobb can choose not care anymore,be we can't, so that's why...Reality Matters!
It is very important whether Cobb is dreaming at the end or not. If He's dreaming than the film didn't end well and he just thinks it ended well for a while but he will still end up locked up in his dream and realize it sooner or later. On the other hand if it's reality, it really is a good end so that particular fact is really important. I'm very sure he's not dreaming, not only because of some of the hard evidence but most of all because Nolan wouldn't bear it in his heart for such a big film not to have a good ending, he would have cheated the viewer if it was still a dream. It very much does matter.
Great Video! Inception is my favourite film of all time (Fellowship of the Ring a close 2nd) It’s such a spectacle and a tight nit story. I would argue it’s Leo’s best performance of his career, he and Cillian Murphy give this movie so much heart!

Hard to believe for me that back around 2003-04, I posted in the 2001: A Space Odyssey forum section of IMDb (back when they had forums) that Nolan might be the most likely director to be lauded as "the next Stanley Kubrick". This on the strength of Memento and Insomnia alone (I hadn't yet seen Following), but something about his meticulous and cerebral style struck a chord and made me feel there was unbounded potential in this guy.
'Nolan might be the most likely director to be lauded as "the next Stanley Kubrick". ' The modern film industry can no can no longer tolerate people like Stanley Kubrick and films like 'The Shining'. Still Nolan is close and 'Momento' is so disturbing I can't watch it anymore because I see people acting the same way, without their knowledge!
I think one of the biggest underlying themes in Inception that people often miss is how the flow of the movie intentionally distracts the audience and confuses them. It's meant to trick you and confuse you, because it is trying to immerse you in this world where Cob never knows if he is dreaming or not. The setting from one scene to the next is almost always drastically different, making you wonder if they are in a dream or not, and the things that happen in the real world, like the chase through the market, are just surreal enough to leave you with an inkling of doubt. That last shot with the Totem spinning is one last capitalization on that. It ties together the idea that, as Flick Fanatics said, Cob wants to move forward and is being pushed forward, and the fear and paranoia that he too will confuse reality with dreams like his wife did is finally left behind when he reaches the finish line, even if there never will be a way to be 100% sure. That's just my two cents though! Awesome video, this too is one of my favorites movies and you did a fantastic job analyzing it :) Cheers!
I watched this in the cinema when it came out. After the movie was over and I got outside I literally questioned if I was in a dream. This is an epic movie and deserves all the praise it gets.
The only thing I found lack in Nolan's films is that all the characters feel to obvious coming from the imaginations of the writer / director. While Scorsese and Tarantino's characters are more natural and have they own uniqueness as human being. That alone, have made me not very excited toward Nolan's films, including Dunkirk.
I just now first watched it, I’ve heard the hype about the film for years but I never really gone out my way to watch it. This has to be one of the most beautiful films I’ve seen, I was literally brought to tears at the end.
Wow man, great video. I never thought someone would exist who's two favorite movies are also whiplash and inception but here you are. That's so crazy. Everything you said is exactly why this is my favorite movie, the emotion of Cobb, the genius I'd the premise, the amazing film making from every department. To me it's perfect and has also changed my life. Whiplash speaks more to my own persistence to achieve my goals like Neiman also has, and I'm also a jazz musician so that's also part of why it speaks so much to me. -For all of you asking what I think of Interstellar, personally it's mid to low tier Nolan for me. Not as epic as the Dark Knight Trilogy, not as intimate as Insomnia and not as successfully intricate as the Prestige although the Footage reaction scene is one of Nolan's best.
-Having also seen Paprika and being a big Satoshi Kon fan, I probably should have at least name dropped that film as one of Inception's biggest influences, my bad.
-I'll also say it seems that the younger or should I say less seasoned film fans saying they also love this film have gotten a bit of slack for not having watched enough films or older films and although I wouldn't express it in such a demeaning way, furthering your education as a film fan is always a good thing and watching more and more both older and from other countries is essential in my opinion, hence my many videos on the topic. So to all newer film fans, happy watching!
-Finally, to work off off that topic, there's a small group of people trying to flex their "film knowledge" superiority. One or two of them do make brilliant points about younger self proclaimed fans not really fully appreciating the history of the medium and only watching the popular and generic modern films which I completely agree with. But then there are a bunch of buffoons treating it like a dick measuring contest. These are almost definitely the fools who were shown one Orson Welles or Billy Wilder film in a media class once and bought a Pulp Fiction poster for their bedroom and now think they're better than others as a result. Don't entertain their ego :)

Question: do you think Inception should have gotten all the Oscars it was nominated for? Especially best score and best screenplay. Nolan wrote that shit when he was 16 and he did the dark night series TO PRACTICE large scale action movies!!! This was a lifetime project for him. When they didn't give him these Oscars, that year I stopped caring about the Oscars. And I was still an aspiring filmmaker at the time!
Also you didn't mention how Hans Zimmer's soundtrack is the wakeup song slowed down. Such an important Easter egg!

Soooo I rewatched Inception and something has been SOOOO OVERLOOKED! I think he’s in limbo and its in the final scenes of the film... Michael Caine appears in the shot and then disappears in the final shot, i dont think it was the editing too... 😐 At the door, then just gone.... i know Nolan teases the totem but maybe to throw us a curve ball and not see the full scene ??!!!! Im conspiring but i mean.... Nolan teases things in the film that you can only see in multiple viewings, 🤔🤔🤔😅. Tenettttttt ^ 🤔

Inception was a movie my father hyped up for me for a few years always trying to explain the plot to me before I was old enough to watch it. Eventually we did watch it together, it blew my mind and became my favorite film. Since I've watched this film with many different friends and it becomes sort of a ritual thing to go through together, to watch something so mind bending and imaginative. My dad passed away a few years ago but this film is something I will always have and my love of it is owed all to him. Rest in peace Dad. Great video man.

You're obviously very young then, considering this film only came out ten years ago. Bearing this in mind all I'd say is don't be put off exploring films of the 90s, 80s or even early 2000s. Just because these films were made before you were born doesn't mean that you won't enjoy them. Cinema has changed such a lot in the last ten or 15 years or so. I'm only in my early 30s so I'm hardly an old codger but even I can recognise this. Nowadays only comic book /Sci Fi Movies get made and dramas /thrillers get ignored. They don't make movies like Silence Of The Lambs, Seven, Goodfellas, Sleepers, Falling Down anymore coz East Asian audiences aren't interested in them. The Matrix is a great Sci Fi movie as is the original Jurrasic Park but I'm always surprised how many youngsters have never watched them simply because they were made before they were born. THAT'S A GOOD POINT ABOUT MOST OF NOLANS FILMS ACTUALLY. TIME RELATIVITY ISN'T JUST A SCIENCE FICTION THING, IT BECOMES MORE APPARANT THE OLDER YOU GET! LOL. 10 YEARS TO AN 18 YEAR OLD SEEMS LIKE A MASSIVE PERIOD OF TIME BUT 10 YEARS TO A 50 YEAR OLD OFTEN JUST SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY. Like 8% of guys are "colorblind," myself included. It doesn't seem to change much, unless you have an extremely rare version of colorblindness, particularly the monochromatic one where you literally cannot see color.

This was the first movie that made me realize the potential film has for story telling. It’s the first thing that made me realize that art can mean so much more than just entertainment. I still think about inception pretty often. It’s just perfect in all it’s imperfections. Making actual art on a big scale instead of just standard blockbuster films is my aspiration for the future. I remember the first time I saw the water rushing through the windows scene when Dom was dunked, and I remember being completely awestruck and the movie had only started. I knew I was in for something special. The only other movie that blew my mind like inception did was matrix.

Please tell me that I wasn't the only one that started crying when Dom came out of the dream and was bewildered, looking at the whole world in childlike wonder, with Hans Zimmer playing in the background. It's moments like these that make me wish I could have seen the movie in theaters so I could share the experience with all the other movie goers, but I was only 4 when it came out. I only watched the movie for the first time 2-3 months ago, but I've watched it so many times now. I hope others will also love this movie the way i do. :) Alsoooo, stay safe during these times.

Inception blew me away the first time I saw it. Just rewatched it over a decade since it's original release, and the third act is perhaps the best third act in all of cinema.

You're right. I understood 95% of it the first time I watched it and was amazed. But, I truly appreciated this film the second time watched it.
Just introduced my teenage daughter to Inception this evening. Haven’t watched in a while, and had me chuckling and sobbing in about equal measure. Really speaks to me as a keen observation on what we consider to be our reality, but also speaks to me as a father. Great video, capturing many parts of what makes this a great film. Ultimately, as you say, its about what we have to give up, as well as what we need to pursue, even if that pursuit may lead us into our own reality, which is not necessarily the reality of others.

It explores topics like constructivism, cosmology, existentialism, fear, heuristics, hope, identity, matter, memory, mind, ontology, perception, psychology, reality, science. It has been adapted to film twice, and while I love both the Tarkovsky and the Soderbergh version, much has been shortened or got lost in translation in both of them.

Here is why I think the ending is real, because as Cob said, in a dream, you don't know how you got there. Cob knew he came from the plane, went through the airport, and arrived at his house to see his kids. The inception spinny thing (forgot the name) also started wobbling and was (I think) going to tumble.
I just watched this movie last night and I’m completely obsessed with it, my absolute favorite movie. Everything about it was executed perfectly, the score, characters, conscious vs subconscious conflict, and thematic purpose. I’m now more intrigued with the storytelling that films have to offer. I don’t know which film to watch after this masterpiece, but I guess I’ll have to give whiplash a try. Thank you for creating this fantastic video!

One thing I was amazed by on my most recent rewatch is that, despite being 12 years old now, because of it's use of mostly analogue props, general lack of modern technology, and lack of pop culture references to other things of the time, Inception is not dated at all.
Inception has such a deep emotional impact for me; whether it be the adventurous journey, the simple yet deep levels the film dives into, or just Hanz Zimmer tugging at my heart as usual, this movie lives in my head rent free, and will for the rest of my life. Oh, and the wake up scene, I was baffled, I had no words, just utter euphoric nostalgia. Absolute materpiece and will forever appreciate everyone who took part in creating such an iconic film.
It's A Movie where we cannot express or put in words . This movie has so much to offer so much, emotion, action,so many phases and folds,characters, brilliance and most of all it makes you think to the core that every time you watch we never get over it

I love Inception so much that I dnt want any other movie to made like this or better than this...
To me this film has something that makes it extremely special which is something you mention: the ambiguity. This film lets us choose as spectators, it gives us a certain freedom of deciding the things we want to believe. I know that maybe what we believe is not the same as Nolan's vision but that's the beauty of it. We don't know exactly what Cobol engineering is, we don't know exactly what Cobb did for them and in the end we don't know exactly whats going on in dream and what isn't and all this just gives each individual a freedom of deciding for themselves what they choose to believe. And maybe it can even change our minds with every rewatch and to me this is truly special.

The final scene where Cobb's totem looks like it's about to lose balance but before it can do anything the movie cuts was GENIUS! It points towards "reality is another dream" and "we're in reality" at the same time! Especially amazing because that tiny fact changes the morality of Cobb's inner conflict. All that represented in one top that didn't wanna fall. Nolan is a genius!
This is my favorite film, too. Some of DiCaprio's finest acting, and I adore the characters Arthur and Ariadne in particular though of course they're all brilliant (Cillian Murphy is a gift).
My interpretation of the ending comes down to choice. Choice is a thread that runs through the film, particularly when it comes to Mal. When the lines between dreams and reality become so blurred, Mal's argument is that the distinction comes down to what you choose to believe. Because Dom walks away from the spinning top and towards his children, he is choosing this as his reality. So whether the top continues to spin or falls, it doesn't matter. Dom has made his choice.
I saw this with my best friend in the theaters. After it was over, we walked over to the Starbucks that was in the plaza to talk about it over coffee. We literally could not find words, as we took turns stammering to express what we just witnessed. Finally, I said "do you just wanna catch the next showing?" And so we did. We watched back-to-back showing. He and I are both film aficionados, and that was (to my knowledge, at least) the first and only time we both did that. Together. Such an amazing film.

Nolan makes some incredible films. But you also have to give major props to his casting choices. Each character seems so perfectly portrayed. Also can’t forget about him using hans zimmer in a lot of his movies

I've started taking films so seriously for the past 6-7 years and I've watched about 3000-4000 films...I have this fetish of rating films on 5 and out of all the films I've watched I have given 26 films full 5 stars...and out of these 26 films when arranged in Ascending order Inception is my all time favourite film followed by The Social Network and Grave of the Fireflies. I really thank you from the bottom of my heart for putting this incredible video and just reminding me of my love for Inception and Cinema in general.

For Mr. Flick Fanatics and all the Inception fans - The genius of this film is that people think the final scene matters. That just being able to see if the top stays steady or falls would tell you whether Cobb is dreaming or not. This is Nolan performing inception...on you. The truth is that what the top does, fall or keep spinning, wouldn't have mattered and would NOT have told you whether Cobb is dreaming or not.

Totems are a concept introduced in the film as a way for the characters to know whether or not they are in someone else's dream. A totem is an everyday, mundane, object that all Dream Architects would be familiar with. However, the totem has some unique property or characteristic that is counter to the nature of the mundane object. Eame's poker chip has a misspelling, Ariadne's bishop always falls a certain direction, and Arthur's loaded dice always show the same result when rolled. This unique property is kept secret from everyone with the thought being that a dreamer or architect would never know to create these objects with these weird and unique properties. If you test the totem and they behave like the mundane object then you know you're in a dream.

There are two very important rules. 1) You can never share the unique behavior or your totem with anyone. Otherwise they could architect a dream where your totem behaved as you described and you'd have no way to know. And 2) Your totem must act in a weird or unique way in the REAL world. Otherwise you would not be able to distinguish your totem from a mundane object created by an architect.

Cobbs totem breaks BOTH of these rules.

His top is not even HIS totem at all. It's Mal's totem. That means he could be in a dream created by Mal and he would never know. She would know how the top is supposed to behave and could duplicate it. In fact, she could make the top keep spinning or fall to manipulate Cobb. Cobb even explains how his totem works to Ariadne, so he could also be in a dream SHE created.

But the second rule is really the one that shatters things for Cobb. The top's unique behavior happens IN DREAMS and NOT in the real world. Cobb claims that when he is in a dream the top keeps spinning indefinitely. When he is in the real world it behaves like a normal top and falls over. ANY dreamer or architect would instinctively create a top that falls over because that is how tops work in the REAL world. Cobb could literally be in ANYONE'S dream and not know it.

I think that it IS important that Cobb is awake at the end, because throughout the movie he established that he won't look at his children's faces unless he is fully awake and, therefore, free. If Cobb is still dreaming at the end, that draws all happiness and relief from the reunion with his children, for he's actually submitted himself to the dream world, where he will be trapped in lies forever.
Besides, we can hear the goddamn top tumble during the credits, so...
I think I've seen Inception probably 4 or 5 times now, but it's not like I mind--I don't ever need to watch it by myself, because what keeps it so much fun for me to watch is that a lot of my friends haven't seen it, so having them watch it one after another and hearing everyone's conjectures after the movie is so good. I'm so excited to show it to more people, because the movie is so uniquely pretty, sounds amazing, and just feels super authentic. Awesome video Flick Fanatics, definitely got my sub.

First watched this film in May 2019 and I indeed did love it, but back then, even if it was only 1 year ago, I wasn't really into analysing movies at all or I knew much less about actors and directors. If I watched it now I would probably be much more amazed than the first time I saw it.

Inception is my most favorite movie too. I love everything about this movie. It provides such an immersive experience that the story and the characters become a part of you. And Hans Zimmer''s "Time" always gives me goosebumps! This movie is a masterpiece.
I had the pleasure of seeing this again at the cinema last week (10th anniversary screening) first film at the cinema since lock down and such a delight to be back in the theatre and such a masterpiece to return with.
In my opinion it's all a dream, not only all of the movie showed us but also the suposed life he had with mal, I think ariadne is a representation of how they really met in real life, as students experimenting with this concept, and they both got trapedand they formed their suposed life, so they never really knew eachother in real life, or get married and have children, all of that happened in the dream. And something I didn't even noticed until now, is that when he finally sees the face of his children at the end, it's in slow motion, a very subtle slow motion, if you know cristopher nolan, this is the only movie where he uses slow motion in his whole career, and the slow motion obviously represents the dream state, so yeah, how the hell I didn't noticed that in 10 years, damn. Anyway, those were my 5 cents.
Thank for this, Inception is one those rare movies I've watched multiple times, I won't say it's my favorite movie but it definitely is a masterpiece.
Apart from the points you made, which I subscribe entirely, one thing peculiar of this movie, and I believe the one make it so popular for some people, is the actual rendition of a dream; even tho it's centered around DiCaprio's personal story, his acting is like 'suspended', it's more like we see the story through his perspective rather than him being at the center of the stage, he doesn't overshadow the rest of the cast, which is brilliant.
My favourite shoot is near the end, when DiCaprio and Page are exploring limbo and turn into a court (I believe the scene was shooted in n. Africa) it's just a glimpse, but the light and framing is just so perfect: do I know that place? Have I been in that place before, a long time ago? Or was that part of an half forgotten dream?
I have no idea how Nolan managed to tap into such inspiration, speaking of which: the soundtrack; apart from the egregious Hans Zimmer, what about Johnny Marr and the 'Dream is collpsing' intro? Just few chords and so much pathos, pure genius, how did he get there?
I came to the conclusion that Inception is a dreamer movie, made by dreamers for dreamers, some people love it and others just can't stand it, I know I enjoyed every moment of it.
Thank you! I also agree that even though it's such a character focused film, the central performance is kind of muted. It's my favourite film with Leonardo DiCaprio but not my favourite performance from him, that goes to either Catch Me If You Can or the Departed :)

One of my favorites as well.. Easily in my top 10 movies of all time. Plus, it's the only movie soundtrack that I listen to from start to finish. I actually love driving while listening to it.

Great video man! You're really hyping us up to Tenet. Also Christopher Nolan himself has said that whether Cobb is dreaming or not doesn't really matter because he doesn't care to look at the top, serving as a resolution.

It's also literally an inception on the audience. It's an idea, distilled down to its simplest form, that forces the audience to see the movie in a completely different way.
I agree that score is amazing and one of the best in the way it enhances the film but I would like to point you to a film in which score goes way beyond that Vertigo (on Netflix now) the score not only enhances the film but actually helps to tell the story informing the viewer about what’s going on in ways no other film I’ve ever seen can come close to the score carries the whole thing and it’s possible that without it the film might not even make sense. It’s the peak of Alfred Hitchcock and Bernard Herman’s collaboratively careers and I think the best collaboration in cinema history.

I watched "Inception" for the first time on April 1st, and I instantly loved it. It took me some time to get invested in the movie, but as soon as I did, I enjoyed every second. It's one of the most emotional movies I've ever seen, and it also has one of the best scores. I have listened a lot to "Time" the last few weeks, and it always manages to give me chills. I already can't wait to watch it again to appreciate it even more!
I love inception. To me it’s the best high concept film of all time. To me ever better than Nolan’s Dark Knight.

Cobra Cinema yup I love the Dark Knight as well. It’s my favourite comic book film of all time. But inception is was original. New, nothing like it ever has been done before or since.

I don't know if I am looking too deep into the movie but I feel like Cobb & Mal's relationship is reminiscent to Adam & Eve
Within Limbo that would kind of make sense, they are the only ones in the world but slowly become disillusioned by it, nice!
It's so hard to ignore the similarities between the "Fruit" that Adam eats to the "Leap Of Faith" Cobb takes
I have bought the original DVD of this movie in three times, because simply is amazing and I try to watch it on DVD player with audio and subtitles in English. The last 10 minutes are my favorites ones! I feel a rare emotion when Cobb woke up on airplane and he achieved his objective. Greetings from México 🇲🇽
For what it's worth, what I took away from the ending of inception is how much we crave for things to be real. We desperately yearn for our relationships to be genuine and have meaning beyond just our senses telling us so. We want the people we love to really be there and for our actions with them to carry on in them when we are gone. You say, "it doesn't matter if he was dreaming or not." To me, it's entirely the opposite. It's all that matters. We all want to live lives of truth and meaning. Not to get too philosophical, but the tragedy is, in some sense, we can never truly know if that's the case. And, to me, that's why the ending is so powerful.

Agree. Story wise everything indicates that Cobb is not dreaming, so I think what Nolan was all about by deciding to finish the film with that final shot is plant the audience an idea that "Reality Matters". As human beings many times we are driven by the pursuit on what's real and what's not. Why after having a really good dream and waking up sometimes you find yourself sad or even deppressed for a certain time? because that fantasy you were part of during the dream could never be consumated in the real world, because you don't accept the dream world as your reality: it's silly and it's just a part of whole of what you're in the real world, so reality matters for us. We humans don't like uncertainty and with that ending you feel the need to go back and find the pieces to have a better grasp on things and confirm that he really is not dreaming, but I think what Nolan also intended is that you decide what storyline to follow: the one where he still dreaming or the one that is placed in reality, but what is certain at the end is that for Cobb, it doesn't really matter anymore, but like dreams have a film-like behavior Cobb can choose not care anymore,be we can't, so that's why...Reality Matters!

It is very important whether Cobb is dreaming at the end or not. If He's dreaming than the film didn't end well and he just thinks it ended well for a while but he will still end up locked up in his dream and realize it sooner or later. On the other hand if it's reality, it really is a good end so that particular fact is really important. I'm very sure he's not dreaming, not only because of some of the hard evidence but most of all because Nolan wouldn't bear it in his heart for such a big film not to have a good ending, he would have cheated the viewer if it was still a dream. It very much does matter.

It’s such a spectacle and a tight nit story. I would argue it’s Leo’s best performance of his career, he and Cillian Murphy give this movie so much heart!

Hard to believe for me that back around 2003-04, I posted in the 2001: A Space Odyssey forum section of IMDb (back when they had forums) that Nolan might be the most likely director to be lauded as "the next Stanley Kubrick". This on the strength of Memento and Insomnia alone (I hadn't yet seen Following), but something about his meticulous and cerebral style struck a chord and made me feel there was unbounded potential in this guy.

The modern film industry can no can no longer tolerate people like Stanley Kubrick and films like 'The Shining'. Still Nolan is close and 'Momento' is so disturbing I can't watch it anymore because I see people acting the same way, without their knowledge!
I think one of the biggest underlying themes in Inception that people often miss is how the flow of the movie intentionally distracts the audience and confuses them. It's meant to trick you and confuse you, because it is trying to immerse you in this world where Cob never knows if he is dreaming or not. The setting from one scene to the next is almost always drastically different, making you wonder if they are in a dream or not, and the things that happen in the real world, like the chase through the market, are just surreal enough to leave you with an inkling of doubt. That last shot with the Totem spinning is one last capitalization on that. It ties together the idea that, as Flick Fanatics said, Cob wants to move forward and is being pushed forward, and the fear and paranoia that he too will confuse reality with dreams like his wife did is finally left behind when he reaches the finish line, even if there never will be a way to be 100% sure.
That's just my two cents though! Awesome video, this too is one of my favorites movies and you did a fantastic job analyzing it :) Cheers!

I watched this in the cinema when it came out. After the movie was over and I got outside I literally questioned if I was in a dream. This is an epic movie and deserves all the praise it gets.
Your explanation of the ending perfectly sums up my view, that I haven’t been able to put into words. I think it’s suppose to be ‘poetic’
The only thing I found lack in Nolan's films is that all the characters feel to obvious coming from the imaginations of the writer / director. While Scorsese and Tarantino's characters are more natural and have they own uniqueness as human being. That alone, have made me not very excited toward Nolan's films, including Dunkirk.

Inception is the best film ever made. Ironically it is insanely deep and has layers of complexity.
I just now first watched it, I’ve heard the hype about the film for years but I never really gone out my way to watch it. This has to be one of the most beautiful films I’ve seen, I was literally brought to tears at the end.
Wow man, great video. I never thought someone would exist who's two favorite movies are also whiplash and inception but here you are. That's so crazy. Everything you said is exactly why this is my favorite movie, the emotion of Cobb, the genius I'd the premise, the amazing film making from every department. To me it's perfect and has also changed my life. Whiplash speaks more to my own persistence to achieve my goals like Neiman also has, and I'm also a jazz musician so that's also part of why it speaks so much to me. Anyways, great video really well done.
