Tom I really like youre show. I grew up listening to storys about North Dakota, My father was born above the Dakota Drug store in 1927 in Valley City N.D . I dont know if it was a doctors office or someones home. Listening to youre show brings back memories I have long forgotten even peoples names. I wish my father was here so I could turn youre show on for him. thanks
Please consider doing an episode of "Digging the Dig" Show us the process you go through picking a site, researching the area, talking to the owner, closign the pit and packing up your treasures. What happens next? Washing, sorting and???? WOULD LOVE IT SEE THE WHOLE PROCESS!
Yes would love to see this as well. I just think it's so cool. Would love to be able to dig me up some old bottles as well but wouldn't have a clue where to start lol
@loriholman5738 as someone with a big of experience with this. For very old sites you mostly need old maps and a test rod to get the best rewards. But the next best thing is, find roads along hills and observe the sides you'll start to notice dump sites. You dont really wanna find the fresh ones. But if you start seeing old piles with stuff from like the 80s. Gravity is an amazing thing especially with hills. The older stuff will have worked its way farther down the hill side and settled so you wanna dig south of the 80s stuff. Thats what Ive done. My digs have worked 80s on top to around the late 30s to late 1920s. Ive found old brewery bottles, amber cokes and pepsi, art deco metal coin purses, mini terracotta german steins. Best way for a beginner to start. I know that was alot but hope it helps!.
@king_chef3607 Wow thank you so much for all the information. I am always out scouting things out and will definitely be looking more closely now. Great job on finding your treasures as well. I bet you had fun finding them
Its incredible to think that the people dumping, pooping and covering their rubbish would have had no concept at all of some dude digging their detritus up for an audience on a social media channel! Time and history are just so amazing!
Looks like the lady of the house did a laundry business to me. All the bluing bottles for brighter whites, all the ointments/vaseline bottles took care of all the skin problems with using the soaps, Had to have a nip at the end of the day to ease the aching body after day. lol It's my story and I'm sticking to it. lol Great finds though, love the blue milk glass and opalescence pitcher. I bet those were beautiful back in the day. Have a great day and happy digging
It's so fascinating to see bottles and dishes coming up and knowing that a hundred years ago they were in someone's home being used. And if you're fortunate enough, like you said, to have relatives that lived back in the day in that same area, it's like a small window into their life, even if they weren't the ones using that particular bottle. You know that these same kinds of bottles were in their home too. Fascinating!!
That Is,1 Of The Most Interesting Digs,I've Watched Ya'll Do. That Little Diamond Ink Jar Was Neat!. I'd Use That In My Art Studio,Just 4 Sheer Posterity!
Nice haul Tom. Hey I found some 1880-1890s blob top beers and sodas as well as a mini hutch. They were just under the surface in woods where an old cabin once was. My first blobs and hutch from New Jersey. The ground is real tough and full of roots. I thought of you all the way. Cheers. I carried a dozen bottles out the woods metal detecting lol.
The Dig that kept on Giving ! That Blue/Green Pitcher is my Favorite and its Intact - wow ! Overall that Pit was Loaded ! Great Bottles and a Toothbrush ! More History Preserved - well done ! Would love if You show us how You clean Your Bottles - specially the Difficult inside of a Bottle - Thank You ! Many Cheers from Australia !!!!!
I am glad that I am not the only one who likes to watch you dig in the dirt. My great grandfather homesteaded a ranch in Wyoming. When we were kids, we would dig where the old root celler was. It collapsed when my mother was a child. We would sometimes find mason jars with lard or pickeled/canned foods still in them. Great memories!
haha well im glad you like the channel. you know, i had something similar happen to me when i was a kid. on my grandparents property there was an old homestead house that was collapsing in on itself. there was a root cellar underneath it and me and my siblings would sneak down into it, and it was super scary. i remember i found an old cigar box down there one time and i thought it was the coolest thing. i wonder if that in part sparked my interest in old stuff. ah.. memories! well, again, glad you found the channel. thanks for watching
My wife and I really enjoy your Chanel. It’s been a while since I had the opportunity to dig for treasures. Each time we watch a video of yours I get the urge to go and find a go site. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Tom and jake you we're right that 2nd pit was fully loaded with bottles and the blue pitcher jug miracle it survived well done both 👏 have a good weekend 👍 Andrew south wales uk 👍 👌 😀 🇬🇧
Amazing finds again! The reference guide the pops up in the upper corner, What book is that? You should write a book on your stories and finds. You all are interesting people! Love your stuff!
How come all those pickle bottles you are finding are so small? You could maybe fit two or three pickles in one. Are they sample bottles? You sure know your stuff! I love that you have the history of what the bottle was used for and who made it. Thanks for the entertainment!
@@kristijensen7457 The zucchini, if you left them all season, wouldn't get any bigger than your hand? :) I wish people would grow that kind today. By the end of the summer people are practically leaving them on your doorstep, ringing the bell, and running off. :)
This is so fun to watch! Have you ever considered doing a little research in old on-line census files, and put some possible names and professions to the people who would have tossed out these 21st century treasures? A lot of ink bottles and liquor flask, was this a bookkeeper, business owner? I’m guessing school teacher since you found the Milk of Magnesia bottle.
Nother great video. I really enjoy watching you dig. Fun and interesting. I learn by listening to you. Thank youu for sharing your finds and your knowledge. ❤ Happy digging.
Loved the dig. Great ink bottles absolutely adore them, and the jug is a stunner, hope you managed to put some of the blue bowl together. Matt John of Duluth bottle blew you away, I gather that was a treasure, so pleased. What a lovely surprise for you to find the Harvey bottle, special. Thank you, really enjoyed every minute, also many thanks for the camera work again, so clear.
What a great dig! Love the lion drug, cool variety of inks, even the pickle jars were interesting. I've sold a lot of antique glass but have never seen the pattern on the opalescent pitcher. Very cool.
Finally had the wife find you on facebook, we are interested in items that originate from Canada. Also have a story to tell, had my own little discovery on my acreage last week. Will get the wife to post the pictures.
It's amazing how fast and how many things you find. You sure have a great gift and knack of finding pits. How about old abandoned forgotten about dumps? Do you dig dumps too like old town dumps?
Town dumps that went back that far in the Dakotas? These pits seem to include all sorts. You have to figure some refuse was burned, some composted, some fed to animals, very little else being left to dump. At a farm I know in NY state they had places where they just made a pile, then another pile somewhere else, and didn't both to cover the stuff, some of it metal and hazardous to deal with, like machine parts or bed springs. I don't think any of that went back farther than the post WWII era, because the Depression and WWII were eras of saving, using up, or in the war, giving for the war effort. Try to find anything made of metal during WWII. My father found a store with a prewar trike and small bike during the war, that his kids enjoyed even to the grandkids. It wasn't just stockings for the ladies that were prized. :)
You popped up on my YT page. I love this type of channel. New Sub from England UK 🇬🇧... great vids so far, I’m hooked. You should definitely invest in a metal detector, small hand 1 or large ground sweeper, you never know what you’re missing!
Great video, really like seeing the treasure you find, they took all the time to dig these holes back in the day thinking out of sight and then digging up 100+ years later
That beautiful blue creamer, is opalescent glass, and very old glass. I have been buying and glassware for many years, and I have never seen that pattern!!! That could be worth a pretty penny!!!
I have a question for Tom. I want to purchase a larger bottle that I want to use to store olive oil in. So it’ll be darker in color. All the things I have that’s old or that I restored, I use. I’m very practical and love using these old things. What should I be looking for in terms of keywords when I search for it online? I call on the expert as a patreon member. Thank you. I love this channel and live vicariously though you all that produce these awesome videos. 👏I always look forward to them. Peace.
Hello- new to your channel:) Do you ever sell the things you find? That opalescent small pitcher would be on my wish list. Great job discovering cool things!
Wow! New to your channel. Entertaining, educational, interesting. Excellent knowledge base, great notations. From one of your other videos, just a suggestion, white pants may not be a good idea in the mud.
Interesting stuff. Would have liked to see the pottery though has that is very interesting and tells a big story too. Could you also say approximately when these artifacts were made, if you know please? I find it all really interesting, especially the path you take that leads you to the dig area. Hope to see more videos.👍
Hi. I'm new to your channel but love it so much. I just can't believe all the old vintage finds you come across but I am so curious to know how do all those old bottles end up in the ground? I mean did people just bury their garbage back in the day? Would love to be educated on this because it's so much fun to watch you and see what you find.
Imagine the comparision of one of these pits contents to a modern households few years worth of even just glass and ceramic waste, not including the plastics....
Any thoughts on why they used so much ink? Was there some kind of profession where they’d be writing a lot. Legal or secretary or scribe of sorts? Of all your videos/digs I’ve watched, this one had the most ink bottles. Neat. I always imaging the lives of the people through the lease of what they threw away and how. Lots of whisky bottles too… 😉
Kudos to your assistant filming you doing these videos. You should introduce the person because they are helping your channel be a success. Also can you share tips on how you go about getting permission?

The short food product bottles with ridges toward the bottom may be for meat paste. You see a lot of similar bottles in videos of UK digs.

Love the history. My family immigrated from Norway to Harvey and Manfred.

Pickled. Not pickle.
Many things could’ve been pickled. Plus back then all fruits and vegetables were smaller.
