    You know Jeff we did a job in Sedona and an old miner stopped by and showed us how to break basalt. With water and a 22 shell. We drilled a 1 inch hole 3 feet deep filled it with water. Then he put this 22 barrel in the hole.it had a firing pin on the top. You smack the firing pin and it explodes the water. Water can't be compressed so it cracks the rock. It was the easiest way to blast rock I ever seen. Hope this helps.

    Hey Jeff!👍👍 For panning in cold or even ice water, get an old-fashioned pair of fireman’s gloves; they soak through immediately, but they don’t allow the water in the gloves to be exchanged, so once your hands warm them up, they stay warm. I had a pair and panned Clear Creek in CO for five hours in the middle of winter without freezing my fingers off!

      Those old timey miners didn't have the equipment and power tools we have today however the easily accessable veins were still present and the rivers full of gold washed downstream into pots and what not. Often they found nuggets in even small streams. Today you'll get maybe a few tiny grains or flakes from steam panning. A far cry from nuggets as big as your fingers or hands waiting to be plucked out. Who had it easier?? I'll take easy gold and bad tools long before good tools and 10000 tons of overburden for "ore" that yields an ounce per 5 tons. That's a LOT of work for a grand or so. It's also a lot harder for anyone but the biggest of miners to meet the investment required for profit. Maybe it's nostalgia but I'll take 1848 over now for gold. Esp because i live in the American west. If y'all have 10-500 million in heavy equipment maybe you'll decide different. I'll tell you honestly that one mine company in South Africa has the second most heavy equipment in the world. (US army has the most) (they're diamond miners but the point is the same although diamond allows for the even higher investment costs to be recouped.)

      @@tbonemaloneandthetraileres4468 i don't believe any one made their fortune from placer mining. which my understanding is stream panning. some figured it out and dug into the hills, and rock. granted not everyone had the ability, or funds to start hard rock mining. and i believe to this day, you can still find nuggets in streams, you just have to DIG deeper, and know what Jeff knows to have the best chance.

    Hey Jeff, I have a question related to blasting. If after you drilled down, you put water in the bore holes and then detonated your charge, would it be more efficient? I seem to remember shock waves in water can be really nasty. (Operation crossroads comes to mind.)

    • @Jake12220
      @Jake12220 2 роки тому +1

      Pretty sure that would have a lot of 'it depends' attached to the answer. First on the ground conditions and second on the type of explosive used.

    • @tvnja
      @tvnja 2 роки тому +1

      It probably depends on the charge. Some explosives like anfo usually don't work that well when wet beacuse it deteriorates and some others float which is not good at all.

    Well, the Dexpan sure has its place. The application of Dexpan seems to be good when you dont want any noise or shockwaves going on. Quiet...
    I like blasting, but you need to have some active ventilation system if you want the smoke and dust to clear fast. Respirators are always the way to go.
    The geology is a wild guess if you did not do any sample drilling. I think it is experience that got you on the right track as well as the other methods you showed on the channel, like chasing the gold up the mountain up the natural streams going down it. If you know what to look for it is a big plus.
    Are you going to make coredrillings too? Or is it too expensive? Too small scale? Is it lucrative to drill into all sides and pick the best side? Or is it just a nugget mine, and is the small gold not worth it really?
    Maybe a "drilling jumbo" is a thing, that way you dont have to do all the a hard labor. So you dont wear down as fast. :) And it should go faster too.
    I still think your channel is one of the best on youtube. It is really interesting to me. I like underground and tunnels a lot. In fact, i like it so much that i scanned another book, that was hard to find on the internet: "Earth Tunneling, with Steel Supports, by Proctor & White". I burrowed it from a technical library and scanned it with my new flatbed scanner. Also worried to get every last bit of text scanned right so you can search through the document with "ctrl+f". It should be the best book out there on the subject. A lot of other tunneling books reference to it.
    Keep up the good work!
    Greetings,
    Jeff

    Excellent and another outstanding video. Happy to see the Ranch Style Beans on the shelf too. Oh.... That feeling of instant burn when the fingers hit the water, nothing like it. That solo mining is tough sometimes and some times real tough but the fun and the stories most will never know.
    Thanks again Jeff.

    Hope you enjoy looking around my stomping ground
    as I own one of the last Kokoweef grandfathered mining claims since 1990.
    I am most likely one of the last prospectors who knows where D orrs other entrance
    is located which he saw in the roof of the cavern, would take a massive undertaking to reach
    the small opening from the cavern floor, When I realized where I was standing, I hid it with rocks so no one would fall in, much rugged terrain to get there, I would have explored it more, but I ran out of health and age, as I am now 80 years , doc.

    Hi Jeff. Mining for 8 years + Dexpan or Bentonmite. Works very well it you have a ledge for it to work on. This is what I had mentioned to you before. Have to have a deeper pit and use it on a free face wall where you get on a ledge. Drilling down. 1"/ 3/8" no bigger. It tempeture is right it will work over night. If cool will take a couple of days to a week to do it's stuff. When I mined. I would expose the vein and take all the cap stone off of it. First. Then drill holes vertically down ward 4" to 6' feet down. Drop a thermomiter down hole with string attached. bring up and check that it was in the temp. Range. And mix and pour. Have to have a pit and free face. Meaning that your not drilling into mass material like your first attempt. In your situation. It is best you drill in the proper pattern and blast with the big D. And half of a stick. In each hole. Then get your self a Industrial Jaw Crusher and Mill and that would be most entertaining to all !! Love you Man..."Lets GO" !!!! Sincerely. Erik. The Lion's Den Mine. Morgan Hill, Ca.
