Regarding barns being red: Long ago farmers would seal their wood barns with Linseed oil, they would mix in Iron Oxide to prevent mold and rot, this why all those old old barns are still red as they rot into the earth.
Our barn on our farm was red when I was a kid, then I painted it white, I wished later that I would have left it red.
The house was white because they would whitewash it and use the "expensive" stuff to protect their money maker, aka the barn.
i live just down the road from the Sutro tunnel. Im so glad someone is finally restoring it

Fantastic 🤗 knew about the sutro tunnel had no clue that community was all out there! Or that folk were living out there into the 70’s 😳 … ✌️🤙
I definitely learned a lot from this video. Fascinating how all the drifts connect to a single tunnel like this. Shows these old timers were serious. Thanks for yet another excellent video Jeff. So come on, LET'S GOOOOOOO!
That was the best you tube tours of the Sutro Tunnel. i’ll keep that history alive by donating thank you ❤
The steel block directly out in front of the tunnel was used by surveyor when digging the tunnel. Aka a surveyors marker. Used to keep digging straight from start to finish when the tunnel was being built.
What a awesome historical story. Thanks Chris, Jeff, and Lila for an fart smellin adventure into our mining history. The restoration is coming along great and hope to see the Sutro Tunnel cleaned out so we can see the whole thing. Yeah Jeff, you gotta be our tour guide. Love how Lila goes around while the guys are talking inside the buildings. Jeff is like a mouse running around too fast for Lila to catch up. Haha. Love it guys. Shhhh, let's go!
That telegraph machine…. Never have I heard of such a device. It had letters and numbers… mind blown. 👍👍👍
Fantastic tour Jeff, thanks. When I watch this video all I can think of was Bonanza, and the Ponderosa. 🤠👷♂️
I think that's a brilliant idea shotCrete . By applying the proper structure for the future generations to explore and have tours and teachable Moments in a safe environment. Virginian city is a wonderful place to enjoy our past highlights. Great job everyone. 💪
Mining and prospecting ⛏️ really was the backbone of America before WW2. Great video Jeff. Thank you for sharing with us.
Love the tour..
The planer looks like the one I used back in junior high, I'm SOoooooo old.
Excellent video Jeff, this is so awesome to see all this history returning to it's former glory, how extraordinary !
I'm a Jeff fan. I don't care what he's doing. Well, it's always better when he's laughing. But I also love to hear him teach! 💋💋💋. Jeff makes dirt & rock sound interesting. ❤️❤️❤️
Watching your channels does bring history into your geology information. This fantastic. Thank you Jeff!
AWESOME!! You got to do what a lot of us have wanted to do for years.
My dad took me there back in the early 70's. One of his bar buddies lived there. Back then, the entrance was collapsed. It was a fun time exploring the area. Glad to see work being done on it! Yes I will be donating to it.
That was awesome, im excited to see it being restored. I'm definitely interested. Thanks again Jeff. Really appreciate it.
Many old barns were painted red as Iron Ore was crushed and mixed with linseed oil. It was a fairly easy process that many people could do for themselves.

Thoroughly enjoyed this video , great vacation destination
Awesome job Jeff on spreading the word and keeping history alive
Areet Jeff ❤️💛💚👍 great video man. Very interesting video. Fun fact for ya in this country people used to keep farm animals on the ground floor and the family would live upstairs. The animals would be safe from thieves and family would be warm from the body temperature of the animals. I used to live in a house from the 1600's which started out that way.
Thanks Jeff and Lila.Jim and I love watching you guys
what an amazing place i hope they manage to restore and open up the whole site!
Thank you Jeff, Chris, and Lila on a fantastic historical journey to one of the greatest places in Nevada history !!! So awesome to see so much stuff that probably hasn't be revealed in a century !! Can't wait to get a tour !! 🤠⛏⚒👍👍

Wow what a awesome amazing place. Thank you Jeff for showing us this. Those guys are doing a beautiful job restoring everything. I love that American people like this want to preserve history. I'm in Australia and this doesn't happen, especially with old mines. If I wasn't in Australia I would love to volunteer my work.
Another great video. I love seeing how they lived and worked back then.
Great work! Hoping to visit the mine when it's open one day.
Cool video, just love these old places , equipment-stuff (super innovative) and back stories. Thank you all for sharing the fun.
