Lived at Vic Park & Eglinton; window shopped at the mall; got groceries at No Frills and everything else at Walmart; worked at Warden & Eglinton. Moved from the area 10 years ago but it was the most convenient place I have ever lived to get around on foot and by bike. Thank you for this incredible walk down memory lane. :) I enjoyed every nostalgic minute of it.

super interesting walk, I used to live in scarborough the first few years I was in toronto. it's oddly urban suburbia, and is also one of the most over-looked areas of the city. I hope that the improvement of rapid transit etc. helps to alleviate this.

Thanks, Johnny! Scarb is huge. This is not a family's walking experience as you noticed. You'll have to pick a residential neighbourhood next time. In the spring, I recommend walking the Meadoway in Scarborough. Good work as always! Interesting to see what the Eglinton Crosstown construction has done from end to end in the GTA. Can't wait till it's finished.

I'm always in the Warden and Eglinton area, I live north of that area. Most of the people that frequent the Golden Mile area live in the Wexford, Dorset Park, Clairlea, Ionview neighbourhoods. As you said, Golden Mile is a commercial area.
I think the reason you don't see much foot/car traffic is because of the stay at home order but mostly because the LRT construction has turned Eglinton into a mess. I know I avoid crossing Eglinton at all costs.
FYI, Ionview is pronounched (I-en-view), Lebovic is pronounced (Le-bah-vic). You forgot to point out 41 Division at the NE corner of Birchmount and Eglinton. I was laughing so hard at your dismay at the lack of street signs.I guess the city doesn't think they are necessary lol. Also, at Kennedy Station, you were supposed to go down the steps, it would've taken you to where you were at 46:27. Geez, TTC is a mess too with the lack of signage, I hope they see your video and make some changes.
You should do a video on the Bluffs or the Rouge, Eglinton Ave makes Scarborough look pretty bad to ppl that aren't familiar with the area.

'I think the reason you don't see much foot/car traffic is because of the stay at home order but mostly because the LRT construction has turned Eglinton into a mess. '
There hasn't been any significant foot traffic in that area in decades. And even in general everytime I drive in Scarborough there's hardly anyone walking even during summertime. The density is relatively low, there's not many stores along streets like Yonge st. has and there's really not anything interesting to see there.
This is why I've always said that they should convert those empty, underutilized sidewalks in GTA suburbs that no one uses into dual use pedestrian/bike pathways so that people can have more separated bike infrastructure to use without fearing for their lives trying to share the road with cars that drive pretty fast in the suburbs.

Great video. Thanks for one on Scarborough. I think your experience in not being able to cross the street until the next main intersection says it all. LRTs hinder and do not promote either walking or vehicle traffic when at street level. Memorable places other than the Golden Mile, are the flea market and water tower at Warden/Eglinton. Centennial College location just north of Eglinton @ Warden as well. There are some interesting pockets of restaurants such as Kennedy/Eglinton and the small commercial plaza a Lebovic/Comstock. E..g. Hamish's Kitchen or Affy's.

Hi Johnny! Great video! Love the Scarborough videos, I've lived in Scarborough for most of my life, If you want some good walks, Go to Rouge Go station and walk to Rouge Beach, there's a bridge over the Rouge River that will take you to Pickering. Morningside \ Military Trail is a good walk. The Bluffs is good, Guildwood is very pretty too. Danforth \ Kingston Rd is more urban too. Best burgers in Toronto = Shamrock Burger

Wow, I was blown away by what a mess Eglinton Avenue is. Hoping the Crosstown can bring more vibrancy to that area of the city which has long had a rough reputation. Your walk also brought back a lot of memories from my childhood, I used to go to the Supercenter (precursor to the Superstore) where the No Frills now is at Golden Mile Plaza, and there was also a Zellers in there. I got my first PC at Merchants Flea Market back in the 90s. I used to go to a Blockbuster Video at Kennedy and Eglinton, in that plaza where the No Frills & Shoppers Drug Mart is. Kennedy Station hasn't changed a bit, but I notice it is a lot cleaner than I remember it, must be due to the lower traffic volumes thanks to the pandemic or they finally hired good cleaners! Hopefully you will make it up to Lawrence Avenue, though its also quite suburban, there's quite a bit of development occurring in the Birchmount & Lawrence area which was were I spent most of my childhood.

Not the most exciting part of Scarborough but there's a ton of businesses in that area. It's looking like they barely made any progress on the LRT construction in the past few years but at least seeing some tracks being laid shows some reasons to be more optimistic. The amount of construction around Kennedy station can make it confusing to get to the station but good that you were able to get there

It always sucks to see how slow and costly every major project in the GTA is. It takes forever to plan and get approval. It takes forever to start construction and almost every project falls behind schedule and goes over budget and on top of all that you have to hope if there's a change in government that they won't signficantly change the project or just outright cancel it wasting a ton of time, money and effort.

Extending the Eglinton East LRT to Malvern makes sense if you consider that the people of Scarborough have been historically underserved from transit, and that extending the line would serve an additional 50 thousand people as it travels through 7 neighbourhood improvement areas.

"If you build it, they will come" as they say. There are already plans to transform the Golden Mile shopping centre into mixed residential/commercial high-rises, not unlike Crosstown at Don Mills/Eglinton. Scarbs is going to transform, but the process will be a bit slower than the rest of TO.

It is interesting how the outlying areas of large cities have all started to look alike. I lived in metro Detroit for many years. This could be a walk in Troy, Michigan or in Downers Grove, Illinois. A few different retailers, to be sure, but such sprawl. Very difficult for pedestrians. I hope Toronto is doing a better job of making sure that the people who work in these areas have decent public transportation. That's a major problem in metro Detroit. People who live in Detroit often work in outlying commercial areas which are difficult to get to without a car.

Johnny Strides throwing up glass condos that we already see everywhere isn’t an improvement in my eyes

      @JohnnyStrides  3 роки тому

@@cryptoholic5120 Increasing the density and creating a proper built environment (retail that meets the street) would be a massive improvement for this area. I do wish they weren't generic glass boxes but either way intensifying this corridor is the right thing to do.

@@JohnnyStrides I think your right. I do still think you can make these improvements without removing historical buildings or culture embedded in these neighbourhoods, and I think it’s sad that this is happening all over the city, mainly under the facade of “greener areas & better walkability”.
