Canadians keep complaining that they have a housing crisis.. Let me ask you, where in the world is there no housing crisis?! USA has it, South America has it, Europe, Asia and Oceania has it. You want to live in easy mode? it does not exist.
You said at 12:38 that 7% of Canadians are leaving to the US each year, but the source you quoted clearly says ".7", i.e. 0.7%. If it was 7%, the population would be falling off a cliff. It's 1/10th as many people as you say.

It’s so interesting that there’s so much blame going around. Truth is it is happening around the world. It is the system that we have propped up for decades is the root cause of all of this. We have to take back our power from these governments that are in cahoots with corporations that only have greed in their minds. Stop blaming and take action. Rise up humanity.
The huge problem is Canada is the lack of competition. You can open a shitty restaurant chain like cactus club in vancouver, or a shitty coffee chain like blenz and still be a multi million dollar corparation. Yet you pay insane prices to go to these places. For instance in major cities like Istanbul, London, new york etc yes, you pay crazy prices but you are also eating at the best of the best in the world. The level of mediocrity is insane in Canada that charge insane prices.
This really is 100% because of government regulations/taxes/red tape. Big businesses love these as they can absorb these costs while smaller competators cannot, and it creates a huge barrier to entry for potential new competators. Many critics have voiced breaking up companies that have these huge market shares, but it would only be putting a band-aid on a gaping wound. Canada must cut taxes, re-regulate, and slash spending.
@@drzerogi Big businesses rule, that isn't something confined to Canada. Canada already has an incredibly low corporate tax rate, effectively 15% vs the US 21%. How much lower do you want it to go? As for regulations, which ones need to go? Do tell...
@@ahhmm5381 No, big businesses do not rule, the government rules. Government that pass laws benifiting big business do so for their own benefit. If the government - or particular politicans and administrators in governemnt - didn't personally gain from these kinds of laws and regulations, they would not pass them. The government wields the hammer, not big businesses. I find it odd that you meantion corporate taxes, but to be fair, my comment was focused on the commerse side of things. Although I'm not against cutting corporate taxes, that isn't what I would suggest to address this issue at all. As for taxes, I would cut property taxes. Canada has one of the most highest property taxes in the world and it's on the rise. I'd cut income taxes too. (Yes, these taxes effect the business sector too, as it is difficult for people to start new businesses when their income is bogged-down by high taxes) As for red-tape and regulation, that varies across industires and markets and provinces. But for starters, the cost of business licences should be cut. Also, all rent control laws should be abolished. Rent control disincentivises potential enterpreneurs from constructing new housing, not only causing stortages, but it actually makes it more difficult for affordable housing to be available. In addition, the approval process to build in Canada is way too long, often taking years to complete: this also discourages businesses from building, especially when prices for building materials isn't stable (which is the case today). This is part of the red tape that needs to be slashed. There is much more that needs to be done, but I'm not writing an essay for you.
@@drzerogi How does lowering the corporate tax rate benefit the government? Or allowing the Rogers-Shaw merger? High property taxes seems more a symptom of high property values as opposed to the actual tax rate. Sure, you could lower the tax rate, but this doesn't solve the bigger issue of ludicrous property valuations, which totally bars young people from owning any property. As for business licenses, aren't these usually 200 - 800$/yr? Is this really that backbreaking? Removing rent control will solve nothing. It is already gone for new buildings in Ontario you know. No developer profits from a glut in housing, only the consumer. It is the government that needs to build affordable housing, as was done in the post-war period I do agree the approval process is kinda nuts in some municipalities. Cities also have horrible single family zoning rules that needs to change.
It is sad to see how hard it is to get things done in Canada whether that’s housing or new business. It never shocks me when my friends tell me they are moving to the States. Here also 2 super markets (Coles & Woolworths) duopoly and holding all market share and not much competition. Aldi is only a small relief.
I moved to Australia from Canada for 5 years back in my 20’s and it became a second home to me. I love both countries, but it saddens me to see both heading down the same path. I do remember groceries being overall more expensive, but the prices were somewhat more offset by the higher base wages.

I moved from Canada to Australia and I find groceries more affordable on average with higher quality produce. @@rejvaik00 ikr! And if you require lifesaving care or surgery you can die waiting. I’ve known plenty of Canadians that fly out of the country to receive medical treatments or care. I also knew someone who had cancer and he could have probably lived longer if the healthcare was actually accessible, he had to fly to India to get a surgery that he would have had to wait 6 months to get in Canada. It’s a real shame, I remember when Canada used to be nice, but it’s far from the Canada of today.
Born and raised Canadian and lived 22 years of my life in Canada. Left Canada in 2005 and till this date, zero regrets. I went for an academic internship in 2004 during my Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering to University of Texas Austin. A professor offered me a position in his research lab for master's, so it was more like studying in US free of cost and earning monthly stipend for doing research. I never considered this as permanent move but quality of research I did in US, the opportunities and salary I received I could never imagine that in Canada. I am still in touch with my university friends in Canada work at low wages on obsolete tech stuff, with no innovation at work. Many of them want to move to the US, but for 10+ years they worked on outdated stuff, so they cannot compete with the talent pool in US. Even in 2004, I remember healthcare being bad and I keep hearing stories about how worse it has become. In US, I am covered by a good health insurance, I had surgeries for myself and my kids, and we never had any issues. Honestly, I can no longer trust Canadian healthcare with insane wait times for my kids safety.
Wow, my American mom was refused life saving heart surgery by her longtime HMO she paid into through her employer for decades. They just CHOSE to refuse the surgery and she died. Just an FYI as to what you and your family might expect. Of course unlike Americans, you can choose to move back to Canada when the going gets too tough. And the going will probably end up getting pretty tough.
Speaking of health care and kids, there was obgyn in Northyork hospital charged for endangering his patiences by induce labour without consent during the weekend for extra pay. That’s canadian health care in nutshell.
There are lots of aspects of life that will be generally easier in the US, but health care is not one of them. A quick story: I live in the suburbs of Toronto. Last year I was given a "FIT" test (to screen for colon cancer), which was abnormal so a colonoscopy was warranted, which revealed a malignant mass, which was biopsied, ultimately revealing I had colon cancer. Within a week I had a CT scan to ensure the cancer was only in my colon and, less than three weeks later, surgery (right hemicolectomy). So the total wait time was extremely reasonable. I mentioned this to a very close friend of mine. He is a doctor, practicing in Virginia. He was amazed that I had no symptoms yet it was detected, and all my tests and surgery didn't cost a cent, and that it was taken care of so quickly. Maybe your insurance would have covered you too, but that certainly wouldn't be the case for every barista and Walmart greeter in the US. And it would be hard to get any surgery scheduled faster than that, in any country. By the way, since last week I'm cancer free for one year! WooT!!! Go, Canada ... now if I could be as enthusiastic about everything else up here! I will be retiring in 8 months, and moving stateside.
It’s not that much worse generally. There is just a major shortage of family doctors at the moment. As for the tech, there has been very low investment over the last few decades (especially since the Nortel debacle).
I'm 20 and I'm doing fine in Toronto. I rent and buy food, clothes and have fun. But starting a family and having even a single child in Canada is nearly impossible. With our salaries, inflation and insane house prices young families will never be able to buy a house. Having a child in a rental sounds so miserable, living at the mercy of the landlord not knowing when they decide to kick you out. After paying for rent, bills, food and other basic stuff you have no money to invest in your child's future :( I don't want to life a pathetic life having 3-4 jobs for my kid to become a cashier with no education. Kids are very expensive here if you want them to have a decent childhood... Starting a family in Canada sounds very bad to me...
Oh ya, and if you get kicked out with your kid you'll have much more struggle finding rent cuz there are landlords (not few) refusing to rent if there are kids, and especially single parents have it harder. I literally read articles about single moms risking losing their kids because they couldn't find housing.
That sounds so bad. Is the land so expensive from reasonable areas that buying a house or a apartment is not an option for a medium income family? Or is it the expensive loan from banks?
100% agree. When I travel to the States or abroad, my friends are always surprised to hear how much we pay for flights, cell phone plans, and groceries haha! Appreciate the comment if you enjoyed the video please like and subscribe, it goes a long way for our small channel!
It most certainly didn’t, however he’s been fuelling the flames for the last few years. The amount of immigration drives up the demand for basic living expenses, every year he cranks up the carbon tax more, sends billions to Ukraine, announces billions in new funding programs. He’s definitely making it worse for us when he doesn’t need to be.
They aren't applying logic and reasoning to the situation. It would take a trivial amount of research to figure out that the trend of rising cost of living started long before Trudeau. Left and right wing administrations alike have contributed to this mess. These people don't really give a fuck, though. They're just cheering for their team.
As a born and bred Canadian, I am severely disappointed with the state of our nation at the moment... And for those who think "we" elected Justin again, you're wrong. There's only one city with power in this country, and that is Toronto. Toronto sweeps the stakes every time.
You live in a town with 20 people and think you deserve to have majority. Give me a break. The people in the cities have just as much say as you, that's why we have a representative democracy. Look it up, you should probably learn. Thanks :)
As an Australian. It's as bad here. Trying to buy a house is almost impossible without help. Also, the rental crisis in our big cities is absolutely terrible.
Canadians are complaining that they have a housing crisis, you should ask them, where in the world is there no housing crisis? maybe they want to move to antartica
It's pretty bad as well in Australia from what I hear, but nowhere near as bad as it is here. You guys have leapfrogged us in terms of GDP per capita, purchasing power parity, gross GDP growth, expected GDP growth and so many other ways.
I've lived in Canada for around 8 yrs, still don't get it, how come a country with 2nd largest land in the world has a housing crisis?? When I just arrived in the country, the cost to own a house was around $400k, now it is about $750k to maybe $900k. I am soooooo regret I didn't get one when it's relatively affordable.
Canada hid its inflation in the housing market for a decade. The economy appeared to be growing, and real wages appeared to be staying in line with the consumer price index, but it was smoke and mirrors. If you removed real estate, GDP was stagnant. Wages were actually falling behind and people getting poorer and poorer without realising it. That’s finally become unsustainable, and inflation is showing up everywhere. And the wages are still stuck. The country is sitting on hugely valuable resources it could develop had it not put so many self-created political barriers in the way, and having indoctrinated their population about it along the way. Separately, The healthcare system is getting worse, consistently ranking 2nd last in the OECD in terms of real results delivered. The biggest problem is that the country’s economy is built on immigration to drive growth, rather than productivity, efficiency, or innovation. The more people you bring in, the more housing you need, but they’re at the point that they can’t keep up and people can hardly afford housing anyways. It’s a recipe for disaster. I left Canada by coincidence, having met someone from another country and moved there. I’m glad I left.
What do you mean by “real estate”? Not enough houses are bing built more so than anything. As for the natural resources that’s actually a problem because it removes investment in tech which is bad for long term growth. Additionally the resource sector is growing. For heath care on performance Canada tanks 8th of performance (ahead of France and the US). The reason housing is more expensive is due to inadequate supply as housing increasingly becomes an investment vehicle instead of a consumable, more so than increased demand. The immigration is not the problem, the lack of investment especially in tech is the problem. Canada need to strengthen intellectual property rights to help fix this, and provide additional incentives.
@maryanchabursky9148 Real Estate has spiked because Canada has courted and received significant foreign investment. Same as London, Kleptocracies like Russia and the Middle East transfer wealth out of their own countries and purchase housing, driving the cost up for citizens. Immigration undeniably also increases demand for limited supply. That's a basic reality. More people in, more property needed.
I own a mid sized home in northern BC, share a vehicle with my spouse, work 70+ hours per week (when there is work) in the energy sector, have a second job when I’m home, my spouse works part time. Last year we earned $130,000 combined, took one 4 day vacation and were living paycheque to paycheque. We don’t have drug or shopping addictions, our basic bills cost $7000+ per month, and we’re one of the lucky ones.
Do you have children? I'm an American living near Seattle; at one time (more than two decades ago) I considered relocating to Canada (several factors were involved), but now realize that my decision to remain in the States was a good thing in many ways.
I live in a 2nd world country. And I just got neighbours that moved back here from Canada. My highschool friend also moved back from Canada. Just a few years ago, something like that was unimaginable. What the hell, Canada?
@mrbelvedere1632 2nd world countries are the ones that made up the Eastern comunist block and its supported countries during the cold war. Russia, Poland, Romania, etc...
I don't understand why they don't simply pay people more money so they can afford to own a home or rent an apartment, and on top of that make it illegal to raise rent. Also make it illegal to inflate home prices more than they are actually worth
wait, who's gonna pay more when they can pay less. rent freezing has other issues and isn't a long-term solution. there's way more issues here. you haven't addressed root cause.
"Why don't they people more money" Well, this is the modern economy. People work for companies that tell them they will be their own boss so they get no paid vacation, no dental benefits. That's Amazon, Uber, Skip-the-dishes for you. Those folks have been lied to.

Good luck with whatever country you want to be citizen with. People are never satisfied, and even take things for granted because they never experienced worse. When I came to Canada, everyone was complaining health care was too slow, but they never experienced health care system which you did not have money, there would be no help whatsoever. At least, in Canada, help is on the way despite maybe being slow.

i don't know why canadian pals let that man win his third election eventhough they saw how bad the dude had run his last term. So I wonder if they hadn't had any better or equal competitors against him so they had to choose him instead 💀
Same and the only reason he got reelected was he scared everyone into thinking the Conservatives were going to take away your "rights". Stressing about gender ideology in schools is the privilege of a first world country. As homelessness increases and less food and heat available no one is gonna give a f*** whether they feel born in the wrong body. They will be so caught up on survival. It was classic politics and an issue for distraction from the actual issues of not having resources for everyone. Trudeau is just the face of it all. Don't let him divide us. Interestingly enough, the clip where the girl is complaining about having the rent increased by $7000 is not Trudeau's fault (Liberal government) but Doug Ford's, who's Conservative and the premier (like a governor in the US) of Ontario. He removed the limits on rent increases on properties occupied for the first time after Nov 15 2018. So now, if you want make a few more bucks or just kick someone out just jack the rent so they can't afford it and have to leave (usually you can't just end a lease agreement because you want to but not anymore as you can just increase it to whatever you want). Limits exist for a reason unless you're at the top and want to make more without any regard to people that are struggling. What I'm trying to say is that I don't think the Conservatives will do better than the Liberals, they're just different flavours of garbage. As an international student going to Vancouver for university back in 2013, it was already bad then. I was astounded how many old buildings in Downtown Vancouver were being demolished in lieu of new land for apartment towers that promised "affordable housing" for the neighbourhood's old displaced residents, students or low income families. And yet these projects would end up being being rented out at a premium. Lots of shiny glass-fronted buildings for the few who could afford a place in them. Eventually I was lucky to find a basement studio south of the city center. After months of struggling to juggle my university expenses, services and rent (and the rain!) I couldn't take it anymore and noped out back to my country to finish my studies. Stupidly enough too, my parents and I got a student loan from my country's government by mortgaging our house to the bank (horrible idea, I regret it every day) to go to study to Canada in the first place. I didn't use it all up, but long story short I'm now paying that loan back monthly. Still: even having to pay a monthly mortgage to recover the family home, it's still WAY cheaper than the total cost of living per month in Vancouver. Hell, it's even cheaper that just the rent by itself - and I'm talking about 2013 prices for a basement studio in the suburbs. Funny how life's plans change, in this case for the better (or at least making it not as bad as it would've been otherwise). My country might be a mess of it's own too, but I'm constantly thankful I'm not in BC anymore - even more so now that it's gotten worse. The city and Canada in general are beautiful, it's just that the "living" there isn't really living at all.
I pay taxes as much as anyone. My salary gets me through the month and I can't have any savings. I live in a 1 room + 1 bathroom apartment that doesn't even have a kitchen. I studied for 3 years through the lockdowns to get a better paying job, but for every single job there are at least 300 applicants. Due to all the stress and economic problems, I recently had a hormonal imbalance and tried to find a doctor. After 14 months and 5 referrals I finally found a specialist. It turns out that my condition "isn't covered" by the government and I had to shell out $500 for every injection despite paying exorbitant taxes for the promise of "free" healthcare. I used to work in another country and used to drive a brand new Nissan Maxima. I thought that migrating to Canada would be mutually beneficial to both myself and the country. It turns out that Canada is a scam. I came here with almost $90,000 and now living paycheck to paycheck. Now I'm looking for every opportunity to escape but can't even afford moving away. Avoid coming here at all costs.
I live in the UK and its a similar situation here. Buying a property (especially in the South) is so hard unless you come from money or have a really good job. Also because people cant buy their own homes, landlords can charge obscene amounts for rent because they know people dont have any alternatives. Add that to the cost of living crisis and you have a lot of people feeling trapped and hopeless
Everywhere British empire is because of India. They take over businesses and don’t hire anyone not Indian. They take advantage of feel good programs that benefit only immigrants. They’re systematically taking over the British colonies out of revenge.
@@2and20from what I’ve seen seems like a lot of frustration amount Canadians that don’t live here and haven’t for a while. I don’t like Trudeau but the economic problems run back long before him. I don't think it ruined the economy, it ruined people's living standards but it makes some people a lot of money. Corporations benefit of the cheap labor and make higher profits for investors and real-estate owners (a big part of which are big institutions, not mom & pop) are making huge buck off the exploding demand for housing. The economy is still rolling, but the living standards of normal people are plummeting.
Specifically from your country…. The fact Indians don’t hire other races and own 6/10 small business in Canada despite being 5% of the people is a crime against humanity
The worse part of Canada is that Canadian homeowners have to renew their mortgages after 5 years on average. Meaning the sub 3% rates that were acquired during the Covid years will balloon to the new 7% to 8% rates. That's wild anxiety for Canadian homeowners! Compared to U.S. sub 3% fixed rates acquired during the Covid years for the entire life of the mortgage.
@Cubaquois If you signed in Canada, your mortgage is only good for 5 years at the current higher rates compared to 5 years ago before mandatory renewal. Who knows what interest rates will be in 2029. Hopefully better than current rates. If you bought in the U.S. 3 to 5 years ago, much better deal at sub 3% interest rates for the full life of the loan. Me included (2.79% interest rate in 2020 for a fixed mortgage for the full 15 years of the life of the loan. No mandatory renewal in 5 years like Canada). Why Canada doesn't have fixed rate mortgages and instead opts for 5 year mandatory renewals is beyond me...
@@JaYvInJB I guess mortgage is not for everyone, mine takes 19 years to pay. I got 6 years left. Home owners like us because we don’t want new apartments around us, we don’t want to see our home values drop. This is why politicians can’t really do shit because 66% of people own homes. Good luck
How could the government do this to their own citizens. We could have secured such a good life for the average Canadian. It’s not only inaction it’s action that directly hurts the most vulnerable in our society, which is becoming the majority
I think the major thing to remember is that the Government probably didn't do "this" to their citizens. If something seems completely ridiculous for a Government to do, they tend not to do it, even if some internet video says they are.
@@kirkoconnell Unless it's simple neglect and incompetence. Then that is trivial to do. None of what this video says is groundbreaking. If you're a young adult without rich parents, you've seen it.
Canada was only colonized by the Europeans for one reason: making money. There's not much here otherwise to attract people. It's too cold in most parts of the country for large-scale settlement, which was apparent even to the first French explorers. But there were extractable resources like furs and timber from which wealth could be made. And that's the dark secret behind Canada: it's a place where the profit motive rules all activity. The only reason nobody noticed this was because the original British settlers were less diverse than the groups that settled the States or Australia, and this gave the Dominion a progressive veneer owing to their cultural cohesion. Those British colonists were mostly Quakers, well known for being more sanguine about profit than other Christians, which dovetailed nicely with British investment in Canadian industries. What's changed is that extraction isn't as profitable anymore because most Canadian industries face heavy competition in their main USA and European markets from other countries. Now, the only lucrative extractable resource is consumption within Canada. Why were four million immigrants brought to Canada? Because they would work the same jobs as native Canadians for lower wages, and therefore would part with larger quantities of the profits of their productivity. Why are rents skyrocketing?Because they offer attractive returns for very little investment. Money laundering? Ditto. And oligolistic market capture is also very profitable. Canada isn't a "post-national" state. It is a colonial remnant dominated by a small, incestuous elite of property owners and money fund managers, abetted by a gold digger Canadian government whose stinginess would ashame both Mr. Krabs and Scrooge McDuck. Changing from the Liberals and Justin Trudeau to the Tories and Pierre Poilievre isn't going to change this and will actually make things worse. Canada has an existential problem without an easy solution.
Lmao, I wish, but USA government is flawed in a few more ways different. Merging the two would just have an even worse, but bigger country with lots of people wanting opposing rules.
I moved to London, UK. Got a job in finance. Bought a house in Zone 2. Pricey but still affordable. But i can't now move back to Canada because the house to salary ratio is ridiculous.

I call cap, zone 2 house in London is on par with the best in the world such as Switzerland, New York, Tokyo, Paris. I’ve only lived here all my life ha ha ha even the ghetto areas like Peckham a house will run you 1 million now.
@2and20 Why do you not mention the cause here - monopolies and that they fund elections & own media??? If they don't do what they want, the media tries their best to kick that govt out.
I'm a little confused by the ending of the video. The current regime is not seen as "business friendly" while 90% of the video is bashing (rightfully) Canadian government for not protecting consumers against predatory business mergers and consolidation? Also housing crisis is because of single family zoning houses. Open it up to mixed zoning and build more duplexes and condominiums to ease the pressure.
There's definitely a money threshold in Canada you NEED to make to .... have fun and live well. If you're a lifetime renter, or entry level worker.... it doesn't make sense. My family is established from previous happy decades. But even for us there is stagnation and living on savings (many family members moved back to EU, and I'm thinking of it as I'm fluent in many languages there). Imagine people starting new RIGHT NOW.... makes me sad that most Canadians will never had a backyard. Godspeed everyone.
Ya this is very accurate. If you bought in decades ago the run up in housing has made you a millionaire but for others the reality is quite sad. Canadians under 30 are super unhappy. My children were raised in that atmosphere in the 70's and 80's, they roamed the neighborhood along with the rest of the children. All of them are happy, well-adjusted, self-reliant adults today. Not one of them grew up to be a whiney individual thinking the world, or the parents, owes them a living. They are now trying to raise their children in this manner, however, are struggling to do this because of the restrictions put upon society today.
I remember seeing this months ago, the landlord was trying to pressure them to leave, because they wanted to stay, so he was attempting to make it impossible for them.
People in Canada used to buy property to provide income after retirement. Many retirees rely on rental income and exert political pressure to maintain prices. There are political lobbies involved in the housing market and they also have no interest in reducing prices or increasing the supply of housing.
This is so interesting. I'm lucky enough to be a Singaporean and just a slightly above-average professional, I contemplated applying for Canadian PR as PR seemed achievable and I wanted a change of environment. But in 2018, I did a research trip to Vancouver and Toronto to scout out the place and talk to friends living there, and realised just from a few anecdotes that with the comparatively higher income taxes, lower salaries and higher housing prices (compared to subsidised public housing in SG, private housing in SG is still out of my reach) that I really was better off where I am. Not to mention the stagnating and less diverse economy, un-progressive tax system would penalise a single working female like me. I thought it would afford a better quality of life for young families due to the maternity leave policy - not sure if I was on the mark for that
@@Seedwreckabsolutely. Without high immigration we would be in recession without doubt. The issue is a complete lack of urgency on anything that actually impacts Canadians. One news says everyone is leaving Canada and no one wants to live here anymore. Another news says so many people want to come here desperately, especially international students, who would do anything to stay and make a living in this country. Same with USA, so many Americans are leaving the country too and yet the border is flooded with people more than ever.
Yep. If you look around, there are still a lot more people coming in than leaving. So many people willingly leaving their businesses and houses back home to come live paycheque to paycheque in Canada.
You can blame Trudeau but this is happening all over the world. The problem is that central banks target a certain amount of inflation (usually 2%). However in their inflation calculations they don't include the price for housing. So they are not steering the economy on true inflation. Resulting in a decade of very low interest rates which resulted in souring housing prices.
Yes, but the response in most of the rest of the world is not gvt growth in already inept behavior, making the population pay. Market prices across the board are out of control, but our gvt spending/loss is exceptional.
@@TrevorPhilipsBro 🤣Yeah that 1% of new immigrants each year really puts a huge strain on housing. Why don't you just study harder instead of blaming immigrants on your troubles? That's what you get for slacking too much and not doing a comp sci degree you lazy bum.

While many points in this video strike true, most are exaggareted or outdated. I would take this with a grain of salt. I live in Vancouver, make far less than six figures and purchased an appropriately sized home 4 years ago. It will become more difficult with a higher rate down the line, but I also don't expect to live above my means and maintain a status for the Jones' while covering my bills and growing wealth when I can. 50% of the issues people experience are self-inflicted, barring unavoidable health issues, etc. If an immigrant like me can do it, surely people who grew up here, who have family and maybe even a partner, can learn to navigate this market successfully.
My girlfriend recently moved to Toronto, in doing so, she needed to put 6 months rent upfront. Almost $20,000 out of pocket between her and her roommate. What's worse is that the upfront payment is only about 3% of what a comparable condo is being listed for, so with half an average years salary to boot, they still couldn't buy. Safe to say we are leaving as soon as possible.
@@AndreaWhy-ky3zj who are you to assume how in depth she looked for an apartment. If you do, you should know how dire things are here.
Landlords are legally not allowed to ask for more than first and last month rent in Ontario. Idk what landlord they found but that's pretty shady. Some landlords skirt the rules while attracting immigrants who aren't as confident with the system. Sorry to hear that happened to your girlfriend

It's really getting ridiculous - I'm making 6 figures, and was living comfortably until 2018. Now I have to pinch every single penny. One thing that changed is I had my first-born. But it should not be this expensive to raise of family of 1 child. It's getting ridiculous. We've been considering emigrating elsewhere. Having done everything - from going to university, making sacrifices to afford a first home - yet we're still regressing in life. This shouldn't be. I thought Canada was heaven on earth - but that view has changed, as it's getting more difficult to survive, forget thrive.
I wouldn't be surprised if they voted Trudeau in for the 4th time. A large number of Canadians are left-leaning and into false virtue signaling. It doesn't take much to convince them to vote for liberals. Unlike Americans, Canadians think they are "too cool" or "better than Americans"- they think that this quality in itself is sufficient to take care of their poor economy, inflation, and housing needs. What I also find, is that Americans are more direct in their communication rather than trying to be PC all the time, are more productive, and over all hard working. You would be surprised at the no. of Canadians on Disability or taking benefits from the government.
What is 'false virtue signaling'? Is that how Liberals fight for human rights like those for women, gays and immigrants? Is that how Liberals and the NDP put forth helpful initiatives for Canadians like health care expansion, grocery and housing initiatives that Conservatives vote no on? Is it how humane Canada is with health care? You sound like you think folks on disability should be thrown into the street. I wish for you what you wish for them.
You are correct! Add to that the fact that in Canada freedom of speech is increasingly illusory, and has never existed to the extent that it has in the USA. Canadians vote for the Left on average 60% in every federal election. Canada is NO LONGER a safe place to invest your money. In 2022, Justin Trudeau showed that a Canadian government can seize your bank account and freeze your assets, simply for holding views that the government doesn't approve of. Canadians have also showed themselves to be the world's stupidest voters, putting into office Justin Trudeau three times in a row. Trudeau has gotten his biggest support in the big urban areas, which says something about the intelligence of the big urban areas.
It's not that everyone wants to live there. For Canadian citizens who are only Canadian citizens, they might not have a country they can go to where a job with a decent salary and a work visa is available to them.
As someone who lives near vancouver, this is something that I am truely worried about. I don't own a home yet, but where I live, it's more like 500k a year. It really scares me. Thank you for making this video.
It gets worse. On Vancouver Island, in Parksville, which is a town ,mid island of 10,000 people , an average home is $900,000! On Average. So, if a couple has $200,000 to put down on that home -a substantial amount, their mortgage is $700,000 . IF you qualify. Interest rates have skyrocketed in the past 3 years and people simply can't afford to live. A big house in a good neighborhood, in Calgary in the late eighties was $400,000. That same home today is $1,750,000. Depressing and completely out of reach for most people.
I've lived in Canada for sixty years and I have to say that I do not recognize the country as described here. This is still a great country, but inflation (like in the rest of the Western world) has gotten out of control. Corporate control of our politics has ruined the chances of young people to get ahead, including my own children. A housing crash will be needed to reset prices and rent controls need to be reinstated. Trudeau, whom I'm no fan of, has made things worse, but it is exactly the same in the UK and Germany. The UK has had a Conservative government since 2015. All of our political leaders are following the same playbook. We need new ideas. Without them working people will continue to struggle.

This is a problem with the upfront costs of builds. If luxury only costs like 100k more to make in a building that's gonna be selling units for close to a mil anyway, it makes no sense to try and save that much on the build. We need to see more supply in general and a higher participation in construction before it makes any sense for condos to build lower end units.
Blenz hot chocolate is goated. I live in Florida now but I still miss it.
It is the government that needs to build affordable housing, as was done in the post-war period

💯

I literally read articles about single moms risking losing their kids because they couldn't find housing.

They need to bring down housing prices!!!
💯
GDP per capita was massacred the moment you add gorillions of immigrants into an economy that could barely feed its own citizen

I couldn't until 2019, but still get chirped by boomers, Stagflation is killing this country, I literally make $3 more than I did in 2018 when I graduated and yet I'm only making $0.45 more in actuality 6yrs later....
@@kimhong3573 Despite having multiple parties, the majority of Canadians feel that the decision is between the liberal government and the conservative government. We've had bad governments come from both parties. I think a lot of Trudeau voters still vote for him because they want a conservative government even less. Whether that is a good decision is up to others to decide, but plenty of people simply don't want conservatives in power and see any other option as better. At this point I'm just jaded and don't feel there is any party I can put any faith in :'( I love Canada, but just like basically every nation it seems the folks who want to be in government are always the shittiest of the shitty. Then we end up with an entire system filled with bullshit and bullshitters. They fuck us over and try to take everything we have, find ways to get rich friends even richer and leave regular consumers holding the bag, all the while putting all their effort into trying to convince us it's 'the other guys' who are ruining everything. They're all scum and I don't feel a single party actually gives a fuck about the country or its citizens.

Its like the Tories winning 3 in a row throughout the 2010s. Citizens just simply vote against their economic interest if the propaganda works
We do need real change, unfortunately I don't think it will happen.

I don't think it ruined the economy, it ruined people's living standards but it makes some people a lot of money. The worse part of Canada is that Canadian homeowners have to renew their mortgages after 5 years on average. Meaning the sub 3% rates that were acquired during the Covid years will balloon to the new 7% to 8% rates. That's wild anxiety for Canadian homeowners!

Americans are more productive? How do you know?

Things like the carbon tax also mean that employee wages would have to increase exponentially just to offset their further increased cost of living, not to mention the fact that they would be getting hammered by sky-high rent due to reckless amounts of immigration… all done by the Liberal government.
Yeah, no thanks. Also, I’d rather live here in Eastern Europe, where I don’t have to worry about crazed Fentanyl addicts roaming the streets.
I personally enjoy the despair-ridden place, it even has some mountains from the US that pass through the range of B.C.
Maybe try starting a sustainable career first before begging for a rich one!
Or maybe start from square one!
@@Christo_glenn You have not even started your business yet you're concerned about CAPITAL GAINS TAX already?! Ok now you sound like a 12 year old. Small business owners in Canada actually have it pretty good and I'M A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER.
@@talktothehandreviews I did start my business, in Eastern Europe. I also invest on the side, so yes, I am affected by BS capital gain tax hikes.
Great job on the video. Only thing I'd add is the housing that is being built is Luxury Condos, when affordable is desired.
I guess the government could enforce it, but idk what that'd even look like.
As a born Canadian, some of this criticism makes sense. However, for foreigners watching, a lot of this video is bullshit.
When are Canadians going to wake up and kick Trudeau out?
He is getting trolled for everything bad but no one else has done the job better in recent time, and a new character won't necessarily do better; they just want to change a clown for another but it is still the same old circus.
@@valeria-militiamessalina5672 He's the only person in recent times. Most metrics were better as well as the trajectory of the country under Harper (and boy did I hate Harper) was better. He sold out some private industry for fire sale prices that was completely ridiculous, and probably corrupt tbh, but what's been allowed to happen under Trudeau in spite of him being advised about the consequences, informed about the money laundering issues, etc, is just brutal. PP probably won't fix it or even address the basics, but I'll take an unknown evil at this point over a very very certain and self-righteous evil.
Building manager in West end Vancouver here:
2 bed 1 bath is going for 3700/month 😔
This is disgusting and needs to end. I wouldn't even live here if I didn't get free rent for my job. The rich get richer
I would!
Don't know what you mean, big issue is renting problems. Not paying rent would solve a lot, even more in an all-inclusive.
Born and raised in Canada. The rising cost of living is just depressing and I’ve basically given up on starting a family because of it here in Vancouver. I know that in order to move out of my parents house, I’d have to get a full time job, eat instant noodles only, and have at least five roommates in order to continue living here. Minimum wage in BC is $16/hr changing to $17/hr but living wage is at least $26/hr last I checked. It’s so sad because I love it here but it seems just seems impossible to be hopeful .
Lol these brainlets are gonna attempt to increase minimum wage, but it wont do anything. Itl just make the cost of living worse LOL.
The real reason is zoning laws and bureaucracy making it impossible to simply build more houses.
I'd get out of Canada at this point.
Buy land on Vancouver island, build a cabin, start a garden. Learn how to repair things and get paid for it, and you'd be all right.
@@arktseytlin With the property taxes he's better of moving to Guam and just owning a house there
I didn’t realize Trudeau has been running Canada for “the last few decades”.
