As a black guy myself, no matter how successful I become, I will never ever deny my race. The black race or my fellow African brothers. I think many Africans, especially Kenyans, also don't realise that Somalis are clan oriented and do not readily mix with other Somali clans. So you have a conservative Islamic culture and Somali clan traditions acting as a barrier for social mixing and intermarriages with other Africans. I’m Somali from Djibouti 🇩🇯 and I’m 💯 African and black. I never doubted that ever! My people are proud to be African 1000% However,the question is do other Africans consider us African and black?? Why do I ask that? Well, I was born and raised in southern-Africa particularly South Africa 🇿🇦 and grew up in Botswana 🇧🇼 and Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 in all the years I spent in those countries I was never considered black as a matter of fact people were adamant that I was probably of “colored” mixed decent because of my “features” and never black! We had many of them kind of African people who saw them selfs as Arabs in Zanzibar during the reunion of the Tanzanian republic in the mid 60s. The founding father, President Nyerere at the time, gave these people two options. One to embrace their Tanzanian identity or being shipped to the Middle East to reunite with their Arabic identity. I can tell that all of them dropped their identity crisis at the spot and decided to remain in Zanzibar.

And when the cold war happened in the 60s 70s and 80s in Somalia - the fight was are you African or are you Arabic. America armed the Arabic side and the USSR armed the African part. I’m Somali from Djibouti 🇩🇯 and I’m 💯 African and black. I never doubted that ever! My people are proud to be African 1000% However,the question is do other Africans consider us African and black?? Why do I ask that? Well, I was born and raised in southern-Africa particularly South Africa 🇿🇦 and grew up in Botswana 🇧🇼 and Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 in all the years I spent in those countries I was never considered black as a matter of fact people were adamant that I was probably of “colored” mixed decent because of my “features” and never black! Yes, I’m light skin with straight hair but I’m African and Somali so that hurt! And that’s how majority of Somalis are viewed in many African countries.

And when the cold war happened in the 60s 70s and 80s in Somalia - the fight was are you African or are you Arabic. America armed the Arabic side and the USSR armed the African part. That’s a American talking point not a African talking point.
Firstly, Black isn't an Identity, and if some blacks dont identify as African, that doesn't mean they are self-hating but ruther inderect victims of colonial indoctrination.
Furthermore, Africa is a continent which has many ethnic groups that have different races, culture and languages.
Its also important to know Black race is more than one skin type or race.
I think Somalis are not just one of them, they are mixed with black Africans and some kind of Arab,Caucasoid race. That's why they have both characteristics features. The skin color is darker, the face is more Arab,Caucasoid. Their facial features are differ from other black Africans, I see Middle Eastern features in them. They are unique.

This is very true, I have seen and heard smalians in Italy say they are not Africans but they are arabs yet they did not know which Arabian country they or their parents come from. I have also seen some Mozabique young charcol black men claimed that they're not Africans but are arabs in Africa on a video from the famous harvard professor Loiuse Gossete Junior who was in Africa shooting docummentary on Africa. The west has really done a number on the Africans to really hate themselves.

Our people never called themselves black or African until abt less than 300 years ago. It was the European colonials who coined the terms black and African during the Berlin Conference of 1896 in order to divide and conquer the motherland. For us Cushitics (Somali, Ethiopian, Eritreans, Mali, Berber, Northern Beja Sudan and ect). We take offense to being called African or Black. Frankly, it’s shallow to just call me black because my identity is much richer and in depth. Our country, our culture, our music, folklore, rituals, poems, drama, ways of life, language, dialects, food, coffee, frankincense, astronomy, sorghum, tef, we are the only people in the world for the past 7 days, we have a name each hour of the 24hr day and night that’s in tune with our lives, blackheaded sheep, and etc.
This is no different from us here in the Diaspora, we’ve accepted their religion, culture, we’re all suffering from an identity crisis!

In Somali “jareer” would simply mean hard haired. They are even Somalis who are called jarers due to their tough hair since most Somalis have softer hair.
