I really enjoyed this video for 2 reasons....first how you had last years and this years bindings for a side by side comparison. Second...the lights in the background are like....woh!
Here's a simplified explanation of the 20-21 Burton bindings. Cartel X is comparable to last year's Cartel (with some upgrades). This year's Cartel is comparable to last year's Mission (again, some upgrades). This year's Mission is comparable to last year's Custom (you guessed it, some upgrades). No more Custom in the line up. Burton seems to do this every once in a while, trickle down tech and jack the price.
Spot on. I demo'd both the 2023 Cartel and Cartel X. I am replacing a set of 2015 Cartels. The Cartel X is the new version of the original Cartel. The current Cartel (non-X) has a less premium build quality (highback padding, ratchet feel, overall it just feels and looks cheaper). If you are replacing older Cartels, you want the 'X".
Best snowboard binding ever. Freeride? Get cartels. Park? Get cartels. You are not sure which binding fits your style? Get cartels. Do you even snowboard? Get cartels.
Cartel X made my K2 Alchemist 160 come alive - was pretty amazing actually! Zero complaints after 3 hrs fast riding through frozen groom to soft chunder - knees feet all OK.
What I really like to know: is the highback stiffer than the old one? I always felt that the highback of the cartel is too soft, limiting the response on a heelside turn. How does this new highback compare to the one on the malavita - which noticeably stiffer then the cartel's...? EDIT: I also wonder if the Cartel's highback is softer than the one on the Cartel X or if it is the same minus the heel hammock?
Cartels are my favorite binding out there. There's a reason Shawn White took gold in them lol. I am so happy to see they kept the single take system too! I've never liked the doubles. They came up with it to keep people from retrofitting parts. Not because it's better... I've seen the double takes ice up on the east here and not lock in. Then out west I seen them packed with pow and release MID RUN! I'm not using anything I can't trust.
I don't think Burton invented the double-take system to prevent retrofitting. I mean, where do you even get straps from (for a decent price!)? I know there is fixmybinding and maybe a few other places but common I aint paying ~50 bucks for two ankle straps... I rather buy a whole set of used bindings in good shape for ~100, to use for replacement parts - or even ride it on a different board. It's just not worth it to buy binding parts, especially since Burton has a great warranty and you will get parts from them no questions asked if anything is broken. I think Burton simply invented the system to present something new and get people to buy new- or higher-end bindings. Maybe - just maybe! ;) - they even had pure intentions and only wanted to create an easier system. A company just has to constantly innovate and produce new stuff/tech to keep people interested in the brand and motivated to buy their products. I for one appreciate that Burton at least is innovating, which can't be said for quite a lot of snowboarding brands... It's still a shame though, since I love the new injected style anklestraps but like you, I can't trust the new system. I saw them not releasing or - even worse - freezing up and not engaging as well - which is just an absolute No-Go! The old ratchets from Burton were the pinnacle of reliability and smoothness. I have a set of C02s from - I believe 2006 or so - which are still perfectly functioning! They belong to a friend now who uses them as his only bindings. He doesn't get on the slopes all that much but they never failed on him nor on me - for ~15 years!!! They only thing one could criticize about the old ratchet system is that they were quite heavy (compared to Union's magnesium buckles for example) but reliability is simply more important. I mean why do you think Burton team riders requested the Malavita leather? The new single-take system of today doesn't seem to be on par with the older ratchets though. My friend bought a Cartel last year and they don't seem to act as smooth as my older ones - I would still prefer them over the double-take though. The new system also causes the very thing they are advertised to prevent: They strip the ladders. On every double-take bindings I had or saw, there were some stripepd ladders, whereas I never had this issue on one of my traditional Burton bindings - and I tend to crank my straps down as hard as I can. It's just a shame that one can't buy a highend binding from Burton without the double-take system nor can you swap the ratchet on the ankle strap. That's why the new Cartel X is very appealing to me - I wouldn't have to swap the straps and ratchetsystem to use them... maybe I buy one towards the end of the season when the prices come down a bit. Burton really should introduce a tool where one can assemble their own bindings from all the parts they use in their lineup - I would be willing to pay quite a bit extra for that! I of course understand that they can't do that though - this would make it very hard to sell/advertise the "usual" lineup, since there are just subtle changes between the models.
Andreas Schubert Darn. My experience with them has been great so far, way better than my Burton bindings. I definitely want to try Flux and NOW bindings eventually. Cheers
I wish they would address the width adjustment of Their re-flex binding line. When I want to adjust my stance I would get 20" or 22". so the fact that all other bindings can be adjusted to your desired width , 21" for example is completely ignored. So unless you have a channel system board I would strongly recommend not getting burton bindings. I found out the hard way and now after using them on the mountain I cannot return them. Other than that they are great bindings with a huge flaw.
Hi Andreas , realy like your channel, I would like a bit of advice on my setup, just got a Capita black board of death in 159 cm and a pair of burton ruler boa boots in 8.5 size, I was considering the Burton Cartel x but not sure about the size, the med is suppose to fit a size 8 and over boot size. Would the fit be better with a small binding ? considering that Burton boots supposedly have a smaller foot print and the boot is only half a size bigger than recommended for the small binding, I would like to try them out in my local shop but cant do to covid lookdowns in my area, also do you think the Cartel x is a good match for my board, any suggestions in the 350-400 can$, I mostly freeride and like going fast so I prefer a stiffer binding ,thanks and keep it up.
Burton Medium bindings will fit your size. I wear 8.5 boots and the medium feels slightly small for my boots. The large bindings will fit but the medium give me more response.
Hey Andreas! kinda unrelated to these bindings but you're the shop guru... You ever added canting to a boot for yourself or anyone at the shop? I love my Now bindings, but my knees don't. Any suggestions?
You can create the effect of canting on a Now binding by using the softer bushings on the inside of the binding , and putting the firmer bushings on the outside. Canting a boot is also possible- you can get shims to put underneath the footbed of the boot. Its not really something I mess with though.
Hey guys...new rider here looking to buy my first set. Ride Twinpig with the Cartels 2021( NO X / EST / REFLEX ). Are they compatible 100 % ? Im i gonna be able to make micro adjustments in order to center my binding to the board ? TIA and keep up the great reviews !
Hello Andreas, Would you pair Cartels 2020 or 2021 with Jones mountain twin 156W or 159W? Cartels 2020 have bigger disscount ;) Boot size 44 EU - 32 lashed double BOA. Size L or M?
Late to the party and i might be alone in this but im not liking the colorways for this season.... id be keen to get a pair but im not sold on the loud colors
Geez, so you’re paying the same for essentially a downgraded version of the Cartel from last year, and paying extra for what used to be the standard, plus a little feaux heel hammock? Wack move, B... I’ll make sure my current Cartels last a bit longer.
Excellent video Andreas! The lighting is next level!
