Deftones transcend categorization. Nu metal is awesome but Deftones accomplished something incredibly unique with their sound. Parallel to calling Radiohead alternative or alt-rock. Doesn't really do them justice
Malachi Reznor you took the words from my mouth.
This
their best albums are nu metal tho
@@billrobertjoe subjective but, some of my favorite deftones work is their later stuff in Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan, which arent nu metal.
In what universe is White Pony nu metal
"Change" sounds like you soloed the guitar track on the actual recording.
Wow, that bass tone is the real winner here.
Helium Road yeah
Well of course, there was no budget for that
@@genericuser8348 You can get that sound with compression and a relatively affordable bass amp.
Chi had a simple rig, fender HP/P bass with a sans amp and compressor
I think you should add deftones to the "by busting the bank" list
vicente zapata yes I agree ☝️
that would be awesome
vicente zapata this must be done!
Well, ESP-signature and Axe-Fx. Done. :D
Ed Sheeran is trash
2:40 "this is a 9 string, so this is one more string than carpenter would use", that comment aged like a fine wine...
What do you mean? Stephen didn't use any 9 string yet...
@@mechamind9569 check out drew foppe's (guitar tech for deftones) instagram, he has a 9
@@dasdaza shit fr? any evidence?
@@TheTeaTVI he also used it on Ohms, you should check out "The Spell of Mathematics"
@@TheTeaTVI the song the spell of mathematics has an open 9 string hit in it, that's the only time I know that he's used the 9 string
The reason Deftones are still as huge as they've ever been is that Chino's vocals are actually pleasing to the ear, unlike all the other nu metal crud. His dynamics against Stephen banging rhythmically away at his guitar and the tasteful drumming and bass holding it all together is a timeless combination. That and they never seem to phone it in on anything they do, honestly.
nu metal ain't crud
@@denisn8336 Deftones ain't nu metal either.
@@prescottmajette5290 there a varient of it
Where? And seriously, just no, they're not.
@@prescottmajette5290 there first album
We definitely need a BY busting the bank episode for this band.
"It's about the tone." "It's not the right shape."
Either way, nice to see LTD get some love for a change.
"It's the wrong shape" So we're back to looks like?
and this IS sounds like not looks like
7 string? ✔️
EMG's ✔️
Shape? ❌
Scott Edwards Hotel? Trivago
Steven Chabot I think that was shorthand for saying that the guitar's construction was too different.
Yeah, this bugged me that Bea just turned it down out of hand, especially because they got in such a fuss about spending too much on the guitar they got but the LP style EC-407 B 7 string they turned down is £100 cheaper! Yes, the differences in woods and construction might make some difference but not that much! They're both 27" scale length 7 strings with EMGs and Tune-o-Matic style bridges. Close enough, I'd say and an extra £100 might have bought them a real amp. The Amplifire sounded pretty good but I wouldn't want to play a pub or club gig with one without at least a power amp to run it through as you're putting yourself at the mercy of the state of the venue's often inadequate monitors.
Tough to do when Stefen drops a half step in tuning with each subsequent album, I think he said "fuck it I'm gonna play a bass on the next record" after diamond eyes.
And now he has a 9-string
@@northtimo666 at this rate, he'll probably be playing a down-tuned custom sitar by the second album after "Ohms".
Justin Blair i am glad that he didn’t overdo it on Ohms. Plenty of songs that could be played on a 7-string standard tuning?
@@northtimo666 probably, but there'd likely be a lot of tweaking in the amp. Going up to a heavier gauge of strings might help, as well.
Well, "pins and needles" is played on two basses.
White Pony. Literally in the top 10 best albums ever created by man.
Pro 4X lmao
@@bmark7951 What's so funny, bitch?
@@bmark7951 go listen to Taylor Swift, pussy
I prefer Koi No Yokan
Saturday Night Wrist is honestly my favorite from them
This really makes me hear how much Abe's drumming is a huge part of shaping the sound in Deftones... Without the drums it sounds way different. He also really does creative parts with what the other instruments play.
Mastodon by busting the bank!!!!
Adam Gaposchkin great idea
I'd love to see an Opeth episode, mainly pre-Heritage.
Adam Gaposchkin easy orange micro dark and boss ds1

Adam Gaposchkin hey nice profile pic
Nathan T I use that amp and the ds1 I can attest to the accuracy
For the bassist in the room, Sound like Motorhead without breaking the bank.
just plug your bass in a guitar amp
you guys always do a great job. this turned out perfectly. this is quickly becoming my favorite channel, and "sounds like" is definitely my favorite segment.
Can we all take a moment to admire Matt's bass tone at 9:09? That's some sexy sounding bass there.
As a bass player, YES
That's the highlight right there.
Is that a Darkglass amp?
Sad part is a good amount of people don't know that it's relatively easy and cheap to get a bass to sound like this
It was killer, yeah, Chi was a great bassist and really doesn’t get as much love as he should imo
The blue Strat with Tele neck in heavy relic is ABSOLUTLY GORGEOUS
Sound like Gojiraaaaaaa
Jackson/Charvel with SD-SH4 + 5150III....done
EVH + guitars with JBs in the Bridge + whammy pedal. Done.
The Electrocist this is not the real Gojira.
+100!!!
Since L' enfant sauvage in 2012 ;)
Well since nobody seems to comment on how you guys did....I think you did a good job, goes to show you don't need a tube amp and effects pedals for everything. Love this band!
This is amazing! I'm a massive Deftones fan, I thought it was really well done and amazing out of the box thinking to get the tone. I'm amazed that you can cover around the fur right up to Diamond Eyes with this setup (and probably Gore and everything in between). It's sad that Deftones are so far removed from other sounds that I like, I'd love to play some songs like them but I'd need a whole separate rig just to sound like them occasionally. Still, that pedal seems really cool, completely out of my price range but maybe one day!
Dude SMASHING PUMPKINS
but I am excited about Deftones
In Bloom yesssssss!!!!!!!!!! DO IT!!!!!
Elias Magnusson boss ds1, a fender amp, and pretty much any fender guitar. i can get any nirvana tone with those pieces of gear
killerspyder1 lol u know the guys name is in bloom
Sounds like kyuss
That would be too great to be true. Not that hard imo tho
Please God yes!
Any ol' amp head, bass cab and a fat joint prior to recording....I don't actually care for weed myself but it's mandatory for that sound.
They did a Josh Homme video but focused on QOTSA
I like the idea of using modeling for the challenge. Maybe do a challenge where one of you picks out a real amp/pedal rig and the other uses digital modeling to see who gets closer?
I know Rabea is super comfortable with IRs so that sounds like an awesome idea
Deftones fucking rock
For all the people saying Rory Gallagher:
-Squier Classic Vibe 60's Stratocaster
-Vox AC15
-Ibanez TS9
-A capo and a slide if you're feeling cheeky
Anything else would probably be extraneous, as Rory's rig was actually pretty spartan compared to most of his contemporaries. Though from the mid to late 80's up to his death he did use a Boss multi-effects rig.
And that's pretty much it.
Well that completely negated my need to see an episode, as I'm sure it did for everyone else. How about you just write one of those for all the artists and then we don't have to bother with any of these videos at all.
You need a treble booster for Rory.
Awesome job guys. Really love these videos. And Rabea is by far one of my favorite guitarists. Please do a sound like Chevelle and my life would be complete.
i must say, this is one of the best sounding sounds like ive watched! top stuff laddos!
Amazing just amazing. You guys did a really good job, very professional.
YESSS!! Been wanting something like this for years and my boys at Andertons come through like psychics. Thanks a ton guys!
Screw the guitar tone, I want that BASS tone!
Amazing job guys. Im a hard core Deftones fan and i think this is amazing. This was very cool to watch.
I asked for you guys to do em and you did :D The gear selection was cool too. Cheers!
Guys, you did a great job at a nearly impossible task. Also, thank you for introducing me and possibly so many others, to the Atomic Amps Amplifire. Cheers!
i find the lack of engine #9 disturbing
Adrenaline was recorded with an ADA MP-1 preamp (with the power section of a JCM900). The settings were a little fizzy for that album.
I had an ADA MP-1 when they were still $150 ($600 on Reverb now) - I did a 3-tube modification on it so it had a triple rectifier-like board and it was a massive sound when paired with a Peavy Classic 60/60 power amp. Unique too, I recommend it for someone looking for their very own angry tone.
Around the Fur he used a combination of the MP-1 and the JMP-1, which is just a Marshall preamp with MIDI controlled settings like the ADA MP-1. Anyway, that's the end of my preamp story, goodbye.
Joel Bennett I loved the way guitars on Adrenaline sounded!! Crunchy af 🤘🤘
@@jrock8233 I actually tried my very best to replicate his tone from Adrenaline with a pedal haha. The digitech Grunge distortion. Its about as close as tone gets without busting the bank on preamp and amp sims
My first time seeing this and you guys totally nailed the sound. Job well done!
Excellent job guys, Killer sound you got. I love those LTDs
Sound Like Gary Clark Jr? Really appreciating the videos guys, great job as always!
How to sound like The Dillinger Escape Plan!
Would be really interesting because of the jazz parts.
Ben's rig is rather simple to understand, so it's not too rough to get down. An MH or normal Horizon with EMGs is a good start, then for amps, seeing as he uses Mesa, I'd say probably go for something with an American tone, so perhaps a 6505 combo. For Pedals, either a Crybaby Wah or a Morley Bad Horsie will work with that, a Swollen Pickle for distortion, and a strobe pedal, if there's any money leftover, then you go and grab a compressor.
Fr3akymet4l yes, my buddy Jeff played with them for a while.
He's known for using Mark series and 6505 don't sound nothing, and I mean, nothing like the tone of a boogie Mark
Wow! When you played that Change intro I thought it was the real track... and some playback! You just nailed it!
I think you guys nailed this one. Tone sounded pretty damn spot on. Well done!
Great job! The "Change" clean riff was pretty much spot on. I think it was a good move to go with the 7 string because then you could do all record pre Diamond Eyes and to be fair, I don't think his tone has changed all that much since then except the added 8 string for extra Meshuggah-ness. The baritone model might have helped you now for the DE era stuff, I felt it was a little weak, maybe because of the low tuning, maybe a little floppier and less punchy than the original. (My Own Summer was on point though!)
Sound good though! I would have liked to hear some more stuff from White Pony and Saturday Night Wrist but, what can you do :)
Next WBTB I would like to hear The Smashing Pumpkins!
Peace
sounds like RUSH and Deep Purple
ADRIAN BROWN MUSIC that'd be ridiculous to figure out. Even figuring out 1 album tone would be crazy
Thanks so much for doing this one! Been waiting so long to see it attempted, and I think it's far to say you got damn close, awesome job.
Do think you missed a trick not doing a rig for Chino, given he now plays live on about 50% of their songs during live shows. Would have given you the opportunity to play some of their more layered/sonically diverse songs (Sextape, Beauty School, Entombed, Hearts/Wires etc), but that probably would have taken an age to set-up!
I'm knit-picking, brilliant video.
Sound like Cancer Bats or Alexisonfire (large up Canada)!
finally! what a video! well done guys!
Deftones deserve to be in a genre on their own
You find a 7 string with emg's at a decent price but "its not the right shape." You guys REALLY need to remember this is Sounds Like, not Looks Like. Why does it matter if its a Les Paul shape? And sadly this happens alot in this series. Either being determined on a color, shape, etc. You really need to re-evaluate how you approach this series.
Tiny Star not really. We decided that the in store segment would have been way too short if we just picked the LP shape up.
We ALWAYS say, "this is sounds like not looks like" I don't think we've ever not chosen the right guitar because of its shape other than this video, and that's because We knew we would find the right guitar.
It's not happened a lot if at all before, so not sure why you've said that. In any case, we decided to prolong the search, sorry if it stopped you enjoying the episode
Rabea Massaad if I'm right the LP didn't have a baritone scale so regardless of shape it didn't fit what you were after?
Yeah but surely you do this series to "sound like" and not "make the store segment long enough"? And you could put the part where you found the guitar you ended up using before, if lenght was the issue. On the other hand, it's nice you chose a different "amp" for a change. Can you please write here the exact signal chain?
Tiny Star LPs don't sound like the dinky shape at all
Guitar body shape has a DRASTIC effect on overall tone, in case you didn't know that. Telecasters have a more resonant, rich tone than Les pauls despite being not very different from each other. Strats have brighter tone and have less low end than those other two because of the additional cutout. Explorers have really good sustain because the body is very large. Guitar shape has a larger effect on tone than even pickups and string intonation.
You will never truly sound like a specific artist until you use the same guitar as them. You can't sound like Tool without a Les Paul, you can't sound like John 5 without a telecaster, and you can't sound like system of a down without an Iceman. no matter what kind of amp, pickups, or strings you use
Great job!! I think you guys nailed it.
VERY AWESOME JOB!!! Keep it going! Cheers!
First two albums were on 6 strings in E standard and D flat. Would’ve been less of a headache to have copied that sound 😂🤷♂️ but you did do a blinding job with this 👍
cool video as always. but now that Matt Pike put out a 'signature' pedal, maybe this is the sign to do a 'sound like Sleep'
I've waited so long for this!!
Absolutely nailed this one, great bass tone too!
Sounds like Dinosaur Jr. please.
seconded!
JM-old Marshall-a dumptruck full of Big Muffs!
This would be great! Although have you seen how many pedals he uses? I guess you could get away with a tubescreamer and a big muff a squire jazzmaster and a small marshall or something. Probably need some other tones in there though, he uses some really wierd effects I think!
You forgot to save some cash for a bag of NorCal greenery. Key part of Steph’s sound.
Love the series! Keep it up! What are the alternatives for the Atomic Amplifire that would give me that Stephen Carpenter sound? Something less expensive maybe?! Thanks!
I'm a HUGE Deftones fan, and you guys did ti! You nailed it!
Sound like Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, all hail to Jonnys hair.
Jonny uses a telecaster with a built in Killswitch button so they could get a Squier tele deluxe or a vintage modified but if the Killswitch isn't a big deal then a Modern Player tele would sort you out! for this i'll go with the killswitch, he uses Vox for cleans and Fender for the Higher gain stuff, so Bassbreaker 15 combo would be a shout, fx is a toughie cos he uses a lot, but i'll say Pro Co Rat to replicate his Marshall Shredmaster, Phaser and Envelope filter for Paranoid Android's 2nd solo (if rabea is daring enough to play it!) and i know he uses a whammy in live versions so get that!
Fender Squier Telecaster Deluxe - £355
Fender Bass Breaker 15 - £517
Pro Co RAT Solo - £176
EHX Nano Small Stone Phaser - £61
Dod 440 Reissue Envelope Filter - £90
Digitech Whammy V - £170
TC Electronic Hall of Fame Mini - £85
Grand Total - £1454
William Allison Woah, that's pretty good!! But there is one really necessary thing, an echo pedal, the Boss RE20 is the one the uses live, it's required to play almost every song by Radiohead.
in that case he could get a cheaper RAT and a Boss DD-3 or something like that.
Sound like Nine Inch Nails.
i love nin but they wouldn’t be good for this show. most of their music is keyboard based, but these guys focus mostly on guitars and basses
Finally! I'm so glad you've done Deftones now
The tone for the change in the house of flies intro that you played was flawless
there are like tons of schecter 7 strings with emgs cheaper than this guitar
akash gupta i dont know if they stock schecter that much
Sam Depetrillo they do. It’s a crazy popular guitar
Like which guitars?
Bold move to go digital for the amp. Nice to see for a change, especially as it is more relevant to bedroom guitarists (let.s be honest: 80-90% of people watching this) than a massive Marshall or what-not.
i absolutely love this series
perfect to me!nice job you guys
Need to do a Kyuss vid. Cheers
Sound like Brian setzer please...
danny posthardcore Hell yeah! That would be fun.
As always you guys are just killer. I would love to see you guys do a sounds like of Wolfmother
Amazing \m/. That sounds immense. I reckon Sounds like Toska with both guitar and bass would be interesting.
Sound like Sonic Youth
Chris Andreou Dude they'll never do that. That's WAY TOO HARD!!!!
Chris Andreou that would be nearly impossible cause they used millions of guitars and millions of tunings they collected guitars and stuff
Lukas Lechner and they won't even take the time to learn how to play a Smiths riff correctly, let alone tune guitars over and over again for just one song.
after Deftones I'm not sure whether you were watching. There were loads of different tunings. Also they learn the songs by ear. Of course they will make mistakes. Some of the comments astound me.
Stephen Owen Well Sonic Youth tunings are a LOT HARDER to achieve than Deftones Tunings. And literally, when you decide to sound like a band as culturally and musically important as The Smiths, you better Damn well get it right or be Ripped apart in the comments
Please do a My Bloody Valentine episode!
Why can i only like this once...
ZAPPED916 dude, they will never do that!
But they should.
basically just buy every single pedal you can and then turn them all on at once
Florence Michael HA!
Sounds great guys. I have been a diehard Deftones fan since the early 90’s. I have been to a show for every album except the latest one. The only thing you probably could have done to make it more accurate would be a splash of Chorus and some Delay. The amp sounds are close. He doesn’t even use his tube amps anymore though. He goes straight from Axe Effects to PA now. This was definitely a solid low cost approach to getting his sound. Agree on someone’s Schecter comment. Lots of 7-string Schechter’s with EMG pickups. I am a fan. I have two Schecter 6-strings. One with EMGs.
You guys nailed this one. Nice.
Sound like Opeth!!!!!!
that bass tone is awesome
That's a really creative solution, sounds great!
I've seen Plini tour with an amplifire straight into the PA and it sounded great. Good call on using it for this video.
Crazy hair guy has lost a ton of weight. You look great dude!
Either
Sounds Like CKY
or
Sounds Like Clutch
would be amazing!
Would love to see an updated video. Given how far tech has come in 7 years
I had hoped you guys would do this Sounds Like!!!
wow you nailed change in the house of the flies. Bea its not just tone. You translate the emotion of the player very well. I can see you go somewhere when you play. And the bass line matt also seems to go there too. Great stuff dudes. If I ever visit your side of the pond I have to meet you two gents. Cheers
I've scrolled through half of the 1500 comments so far and NOBODY has a comment of how they sounded? I don't know The Deftones so I don't have an opinion. I was glad that the budget forced them off their tube amp island for once. It seems like a Marshall Code 100 2x12 would have done the job just fine.
Please do Peter Frampton or Lenny Kravitz
Clayton Duguay in my opinion, close but no cigar. They didn't do the research in my opinion, which is odd for them. He is using 8 Strings now, not tuning down a 7 to F#. The tone is close but they could've gotten closer with a Schecter omen 8, and something like a Zoom or a Line 6 HD500. 6/10 I would think.
Clayton Duguay what you don't know the deftones start with the white pony album
Around The Fur is the definite starting point for the Deftones...
Deftones, people. Not THE Deftones.
It's not odd, it's that they are human. Also remember WHY this video exists. This series is NOT about helping people achieve that tone (that would be an extremely different looking series and one which I wish someone would do) but instead it's to showcase gear for Andertons so people will want to buy it. Honestly they TRIED to say it but should have just been straight up and done 3 guitars (6, 7, and 8) and gave options because the Deftones have grown their sound so much and have specific eras of their music that you really need something that can do that. You can't get low enough with a 6 (possibly if it's a baritone) for anything from the self titled album and beyond and with either a 7 or 8... well... good luck playing the thrash of Adrenaline, the groove of Around the Fur, or the melding of the two in White Pony... it's too hard which is why Steph switches out guitars. Oh and if you watch interviews with Steph about White Pony then you will know yes he used a 7 on that however he used two high e strings (basically like Wes Borland) at the time. It wasn't until the self titled that he dropped low enough to NEED it.
I find these videos interesting and I can sometimes tell when something is double tracked after listening and if you can't get a tone super matched if you want to, than I recommend experimenting with double tracking if you want to do a cover because some distortion stuff on some albums was mixed with double (with stuff played almost the same, but not exact on each guitar track). There has been even more tracks made for some riffs sometimes. Sometimes double tracking could sound like a chorus effect thing, but still double tracking sometimes gives a more accurate sound for tone matching.
Great effort- change sounded awesome
Even though Gojira's rig is pretty simple, A "Sound Like" would be great because i'm sure there's always something to learn ('and hearing gojira is ALWAYS a pleasure) !
RADIOHEAD FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE MAN COME ON RADIOHEAD
Nejsayer hello
Awesome tone.
For the modeler, i think i would have used the Line 6 HX Stomp, but the Amplify did an awesome job
I liked the way the riffs sound on this guitar, very raw
Eric Johnson - The guy who wrote the legendary song Cliffs of Dover
and Zap
I’d love a BY Busting, where you recreate Chino’s tones as well
One of my favorite bands of all time!In terms of sound, it was very close not perfect but imagine a spliff and some head phone and a bit of time you would get there eventually
amazing!!! subscribed!!
Sound like ritchie blackmore
which era? Deep Purple or Rainbow
William Allison both!!
William Allison Rainbow is the best band of all Time so... RAINBOW
Sound like Steve Vai, Mr. Big, Van Halen, Nuno Bettencourt, Korn, etc...
or Racer X if you're doing Paul Gilbert
yeah Juan Alderete sounds like. Actually talking of that what about Mars Volta? probably impossible.
Easy - get a made in indonesia Jem, vai actually goes through quite affordable amps, the legacy carvins, best bang for your buck is to get em both second hand.
ok for Steve Vai this is my analysis, He has two different signature Ibanez guitars, the JEM and the Universe, the Universe is a 7 string but it's way too much money and you can actually get a cheaper version of the JEM so we'll get that, if there is none then an RG350 would work, for amps he uses Carvin Legacy which they don't have so egnater tweaker and he also uses a crap ton of FX so i've picked a few
Ibanez JEM JR - £420
Egnater Tweaker 15 - £430
Boss DS1 - £40
Dunlop Cry Baby Wah - £90
Boss CH1 - £80
Digitech Whammy DT - £210
TC Electronic Hall Of Fame Mini Reverb - £85
Boss DD7 Delay - £135
racking in at an immense - £1490
I have been studying Steph's tone for a couple years now and even bought his signature 7 with an AxeFx 3. No, I'm not made of money and it took me being married and saving for 10 months to get one, but Steph's tone is so freaking difficult to get when you take your time and try to replicate it. It is not easy at all. The fact you guys did it in a day or two deserves props cause it is pretty close. I'd say you're 80% there and thats a grade B. When you just come across trying to make his tone, you're going to have a hard time. Steph is one of those guys that obsesses over his tone. Don't believe me? Go look for every video featuring his gear. He's got bias FX, AxeFx, guitar rig, all sorts of stomp boxes, power amps, cabinets, cabinets that are mic'd. He has spent alot of time on his sound! I hope I can meet him one day just to chill.
That's pretty impressive. Well done.
Sound like RADIOHEAD
you already know the rig i put together so i don't need to say more
Guys, what about sounds like Karnivool? It would be very fun
I see everyone shouting the name of their favourite band in the comments, but no one saying how good it was !
Great job, and I think it's completely legit to have digital modelling pedal to emulate an Axe-FX. Looking forward to the next !
First off, i'm really digging all these sound like videos! As a gearnerd it's really fun to see what you guys come up with but as a huge Deftones fan and Stephen in particular i just felt the tones weren't quite there..
Guitars: LTD/E-II/ESP's with EMG's or a Duncan JB is spot on. 8/7/6/baritone can be whatever the player likes, when it comes to 6's go with a Drop C/Drop c# (these tunings hold up pretty well even in their later works) oh and get some thicker strings! (a 0.56 as minimum gets you that nice attacky/djenty/bodom-ish like the Tones)
Amps: This is where it just wasn't there.. though Stephen likes/uses AXE FX and apps//Plug Ins, on a budget just ouch...
the Marshall rig story... you'll go waaay to proffesory on this stuff soo you''d say.. just use a Marshall? well these willl be too light when it comes to the Distortion.. In one of his recent intervieuw Steph said he loves Orange amps and want them all!
The distortion on these amps in combination with the pickups/thicker strings will definitly get you there and on a budget i'd say go with an Orange Micro Terror! Great distortion but can also do those beautfull cleans aswell as the Change type of sounds.
Pedals: In the cleans (and even on distortion setups) you'll hear Choruses/Delays/Phasers and reverb (reverb being one you could ditch)
And guess what, there'll be enough money left for a 4x12 cabinet and maybe even some ''green'' like the *high* and mighty Stephen himself XP
