Good video, but just a just a few notes. Measuring the ABS ring depth will render a few different readings if measured from the wheel bearing side seals as these are rubber coated and not a machined surface. Toyota recommends the axle hub as a reference. After washing the axle tube and inner seal with brake cleaner (prior to axle re-installation) you should re-lube the inner seal. The axel tube also has an inner step that gives the proper depth for the seal when fully seated. Just make sure as The Other Guy is implying, don't press it in so hard as to distort the seal.

If you have ABS you do not need to cut the ABS gear when doing a axle bearing, you actually want to save that for when you put everything back together. Unless it is damage then yes cut it and replace it. Best rule of thumb, put it back the way you took it apart. I have an 84’ Toyota pickup with a complete axle out of a 2000 TRD Tacoma and I just did the wheel bearings. Even though I don’t have ABS, I reinstalled the the ABS gear for proper clearances to the seal, because that is how it came stock.

you will damage the bearing like that. you should press it into the plate first hitting the bearing outer race only then you can bang it with the pipe on the inner race onto the shaft. that bearing is not a thrust bearing and will get damaged

I suggest you grease the last retainer and install the axle assembly and spin axle a few revolutions .remove axle assembly and check how far seal is on the retainer.always measure from. Outer part of axle tube to seal and to center of abs sensor hole .now measure from wheel bearing to center of tone ring and center of retainer ,press tone ring to desired measurement and then retainer to desired measurement use the grease on retainer to check seal point on retainer

I’ve got a 2003 Sequoia with bad front bearings which I understand is similar to the 1st gen Tundra’s. I’m thinking about getting a 12 ton press from Harbor Freight. Will that be sufficient?

STOP-STOP-STOP!!! The bearing does have a lateral free-play but NEVER vertical (up-down) free-play:
Use the toyota bearing puller tool (ebay) and a press to remove the retainer, ABS ring and bearing. With the tool, you can reuse the ABS ring BUT always replace the retainer with a NEW OEM part. Replace the outer dust/water seal while the axle is out of the backing plate. Before the final assembly MAKE sure the most inbound retainer that runs on the oil seal is at the CENTER of the oil seal lip. Use the Sharpie method invented by T4R.org Community: Watch toyota axle bearing replacement by Timmy the tool man.

    • @theotherguy3083

It depends. If there is nothing wrong with the diff or wheel bearing where shards of metal are inside the axle housing then you don't need drain the oil. However, if your axle bearing is shredded, you'll need to drain the axle and diff and then clean everything inside.

@@Troll814 yes. Here is why. Inside the axle housing itself are oil shrouds located on each end of the axles. It is designed to keep the oil from sloshing back and forth when the truck is traveling on uneven roads. They are made of thin sheets of metal and can be damaged and knocked out of place if the mechanic was not careful when installing the axle into the axle housing. If this is so, the axle shroud inside may have been knocked off its perch and is now resting on the axle itself causing the grinding sound you are hearing. Only way to find out is to remove the diff and axle and physically check.
