    Excellent. Zorn isn't arrogant to raw blues and rock influences. That is the reason why he sounds so modern.

    im a snob, I own a million CDs and have thousands of hours of music downloaded but I can't get enough of Zorn - same league as Coltrane, Zappa, Shostakovich, Mingus - a giant of joy and beauty and it fukcing rocks

      Sorry, but Shostakovich was in another level. And I really love the works of Miles, Coltrane, Mingus, Zappa et al.

    • @riveravaldez
      @riveravaldez 6 років тому

      Yes, of course. And now, there's the pressure of market survival combined with political repression (no surprise you can't find serious political statements from most of the famous artists). The US is deeply militarized, and anyone can see the fear of the artists when they are in the position to denounce something, being viewed as "terrorists", etc.
      In a historical review this is coherent with Stalin's Thermidor and his collaboration politic with western imperialism.

      I totally agree. It is an aesthetically pathological case of emperor's new clothes - haven't these people ever listened to Cream's "Wheels of Fire". Towards the end when Cream became over-bloated, they were savagely slammed (with some justification) for their uber-wankathons that bored everyone to death.
      But at least they had the bottle to accept that criticism at the time. At their peak they even had Leonard Bernstein raving about how good they were.
      However - they never sounded as bad as this! This stuff reminds me of Big Brother and the Holding Company!
      I love Marc Ribot's playing with Tom Waits - but Wha' da ...
      And someone here is talking about Zorn in the same galactic supercluster as Coltrane? but Wha' da ...
      Zappa?! Frank would eat this stuff on a cold hotdog while waiting in the snow for a cab, "colder than a flat frog on a Philadelphia freeway in February" (Waits)
      But seriously, the worst aspect of this stuff is its pretentious self-aggrandising aspirations to the Big Face Money!
      Aint got it. Emperor's New Clothes - call the tailor ...

      I totally disagree. This music is fantastic. I just wanted to emphasize that I like Zorn's engagement.

    • @dison77433

      Hooboy...what to say.
      When I lurch through the musical wonderland that overwhelms me in sheer volume, brilliance and trashiness, I find that the most rewarding of the lot is not immediately recognized on first listen. Or second. Or twentieth.
      Then a day comes along when despite your reticence, you put it on the table and 'click', the light comes on. Such is it with Zorn.
      The sheer power of this group reminds me of a stage coach which if not properly reined, will end in disaster. Zorn owns this team, completely.
      Everytime I listen to and watch this my hair stands on end. Pure joy in motion.

    I like the Marc/John dynamic. Like clearly John is a control freak and wants to tell everyone what to do, but Marc's attitude is like, "ok, I'll play your little game, but I'm gonna shred the guitar and completely steal the spotlight while doing it!"

  • @joshuaschwartz7397
    @joshuaschwartz7397 11 років тому +27

    Zorn's notation is amazingly complex. Not only that, but he's been using the hand signals since the 80s, when he composed "game pieces," which are structured improvisations built around certain set rules (Steven Soderbergh used to direct films the same way). But most strikingly, imo, is how his direction intersects with his interest in the esoteric and occult. It's like he's conjuring the music. If you have not seen it live, then you have not witnessed its crackling, immediate power.

    @bezinsky I was there and I got to say that one thing that was quite as amazing as the concert itself was seeing the amount of people that actually left during the show (I guess most of them had come for Avishai Cohen who was playing first; that was quite boring).
    Zorn or the others didn't seem to care for one second though. And the good thing is that in the end, you knew that the people that had stayed were there for a good reason!

    @CBurton - Yeah I know exactly what you are saying. Zappa's band also had a lot of flexability and improvisation as well, it was just more well rehearsed if you know what I mean. They also improvised plenty live as things took odd twists and turns and they were forced to 'adapt'. I think zappa kept everyone on their toes, and they were strung along, he definitely had a TON of control over them leaving less room to write their own parts on the spot, but they still improvised in between songs etc.
