    What do you think of Heavy Rain and Quantic Dream? Do you think David Cage's visions of non-gamelike video games are admirable or not?

      Heavy Rain is a better video game experience than The Last of Us in my opinion. I love it's story more and I felt more for it's characters, that's not saying The Last of Us is bad, but it needs to be recognized that Heavy Rain deserves much more praise and pushed the narrative-driven story line games forward not backward.
      Without Heavy Rain I doubt gaming stories would be given as much attention as Heavy Rain sold well and is regarded by its fans to be a great experience on the back of it simply being a story adventure.

      In spite of what all the Critics tell me.
      I still love Heavy Rain from the bottom of my heart and still think it's one of the best PS3 games ever.
      And to be honest as far as you showing me a clip of Xenoblade at 0:01.
      I prefer the story of Heavy Rain over the story of Xenoblade and Xenoblade.
      Given that one (Heavy Rain) is more easy to follow and understand in very simplistic terms.
      The Other (Xenoblade) is total fucking shit and I cannot for the life of me understand what the protagonist in that game are even attempting to do.
      In addition to the story being easy to follow. The music kicks so much ass and is tragic beautiful. The Characters are very memorable and likable. The gameplay definitely does a good job of keeping me on my toes and paying very close attention as opposed to me just sitting there being bored and wanting to pay attention to something else. The visuals are extremely neat. And the twist and turns the games offers are very neat with a tear jerking moments that do get me.
      It's fair to say Heavy Rain is one of those games I personally love that everyone else hates. No one is going to change my mind on that.
      Especially when there are far worse games out there with more butt ugly visuals (BALLZ 3D)!! Awful horrendous gameplay (JRPG games like Dragon Quest, Persona, Fire Emblem, ect...........)!!! And worse stories (JRPG games like the ones I mentioned already, Sonic 06. The Story Mode For Super Smash Bros Ultimate, ect.............)!!!
      Also. This maybe just me. But how do you not even bother to include Ethan Mars in Playstation All Stars Battle Royale on Playstation 3??????
      Out of all the 1 billion Sony owned First Party Characters!! Ethan has got to be the easiest character to make a moveset for!!!
      I would show you a video made by one UA-camr that made a moveset for Ethan. But that's now been removed from UA-cam completely!!

    As someone who literally just finished this game for the first time about 30 min ago, I couldn't POSSIBLY agree with your analysis of the problematic reveal of the killer more. The forced perspective and hasty retcon at the end made it feel as if the game wasn't acting in good faith. To contradict something SO important, that you explicitly see with your eyes, with a retcon left a bad taste in mouth 110%. But as problematic as some aspects are, I still absolutely love this mess of a game, and was HELLBENT on saving that child. Any game that can get me that determined and focused on a task must be doing SOMETHING right. Terrific video, thank you!!!

      Why do people have trouble writing women just treat them as regular people like how they write men lol.

    Scott's story should have been Norman's, along with other things Norman does.
    He's younger than Scott, so that makes the trauma of the father's negligence more fresh. Him being FBI makes it easier for him to find good locations for kidnappings and keeping up with the fathers' whereabouts during their challenges. ARI can be used to alter evidence that ties to him. The use of the glasses and drugs continues to alter his sense of reality, having delusions and making him think what he's doing is a good thing.

    I COMPLETELY agree with the criticism of Madison every thing she does is related to some guy (including Ethan) even the taxidermist DLC is her being chased around by some guy. It would have been better if they focused on her job as reporter? searching for the truth similar to Jayden but maybe more focused on talking to people and not the forensic aspect.

    Heavy Rain has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. I always loved how any character can die at any point because of you messing up an input, but the plot keeps going. I also really liked the multitude of choices. And at the time, I enjoyed the gameplay because it was something I had never experiences before. The story and voice acting are a bit nostalgic for me as well.

    QD games are such paradoxes. They're simultaneously innovate, clunky, fun, boring, creative, artsy, cheesy, etc. Sometimes your choices matter and have a huge impact and sometimes they're pointless. I think your review nailed on the head how hard it is to say whether these kinds of games are good or bad, they just... are. Really like the video!

    • @CloudConnection

      Thanks man! Yeah, it's difficult to really pin down a Quantic Dream game, because for everything they do right, they can just as quickly tunrn to awfulness. Even if Heavy Rain is probably the best balance of good and bad, it's tough to call it either great or awful on the whole. That's why I think picking out the best and worst elements is the neat way to evaluate games like this.

      @@fightingmedialounge519 Yeah. People hype QD games way too much. The more Cage tries, the more it's clear he's a talentless hack trying too hard who just tinges on sensitive topics like sexual assault and suicide to be "provocative" and "edgy" without knowing what to do with it or how to deal with it.
      Honestly, if he just produced talentless trash like Michael Bay, I probably wouldn't hate him so much, but David Cage goes way further.

    Quantic Dream and David Cage are masters of setting up the story. Setting up the what could be, the suspense and possibility that they suggest. They just have a big problem really coming through with those. They set up a whole row of canons for only some of them to go off. I think Fahrenheit is the perfect example of this, the story starts off legendarily with the bathroom murder and subsequent escape. But then you get halfway through the story of a possession and some dark occulty thing to ancient aliens and the protaganist getting actual superpowers. They have such promise but they don't know how to end.

While I don't think the game was necessarily the best, I do think it was important that it existed.

There's no justification for why Scott should be continuously thinking and actively trying to solve his own case and thinking the rich kid copycat is important

    I feel like most of cage's games have pretty cool hooks that then are the only part of the game with that level of mechanical depth. The opening part of indigo prophecy where you have to hide your unintended murder and then investigate the scene as the police? Sick as hell, wish the whole game was like that. The house scene in heavy rain where your wife will eventually give up on your help if you fumble it too many times and you run out of real life time to do your architect work before she gets home? Where the hell was that in the rest of the game? I remember much less about the others but I suspect at least beyond had a similar opening situation.

The Lizard sequence still gives me chills, and I love how many different directions the story can take depending on the choices you make. I know they don’t typically “remake” video games the way they do movies, but I think this one has a lot of potential should they ever go that direction. Despite its flaws, it’s still emotionally compelling enough to keep me invested.

I always get entranced by narrative experiences when I play them. The Walking Dead, Life is Strange, Until Dawn and now Heavy Rain. I love this sub genre and no matter how cheap the final twist were I loved the reveal and the unreliable narrator aspect and genuinely was invested in the story and every moment I made on my controller, Ethan is by far my favorite character as every trial (say for 2&3) had me truly think about my decisions, the dialogue wasn't a problem for me neither was the motion capture as I look past most of that because I just like the stories in my games and when the game got going I really didn't mind the voice acting, especially Jayden I love 'em to bits. Heavy Rain is definitely my favorite game right now, its compelling, intriguing and super cool.

    I think the story of "Heavy Rain" goes beyond the trope of the love of a father. I think it's about having goals and what are you willing to do to reach them. That's why the endings I made sure the endings I got corresponded to my vision.
    -Sometimes we accomplish them and evolve (A new Begining);
    -Sometimes we accomplish them but don't make any progress in our lives (Heroine);
    -Sometimes we fail, but get close enough ensure our legacy lives on to teach others (Uploaded);
    -And sometimes we accomplish them, but the means we use to reach the end eventually has karma cath up to us (A mother's revenge);
    -Now I'm going to reverse the roles for Ethan and Shelby. Because sometimes we are so flawless in the way we commit atrocities that the consequences never fully catch up to us (Unpunished). And sometimes, even though we accomplish our objectives and deserve to be rewarded, the world is cruel enough to deny us that rightful reward (Ethan's grave);
    These 6 endings are remind us that we must keep fighting to pull it through in this cold rainy world. And the reason why we must fight, is because people like Scott are always lurking around the corner. This final lesson is going to be represented by the endings "A new Begining", "Heroine", "Uploaded" and "Unpunished" put together. The most realistic collection of endings (at least for me).

      That's a fair assessment. Heavy Rain's chapters hold up better on their own, but if you don't isolate them from everything else, it just doesn't come together. If David Cage and Quantic Dream capitalized on THAT strength, maybe they'd have a better reputation. Maybe.

I bought it on launch day, didn't really like the gameplay, and then before I got very far into it the killer was spoiled for me by a webcomic and honestly, after knowing who the killer was I just had no desire to ever go back to it. I tried for a bit, but playing it after I'd been spoiled just became a massive chore for me.

      Sucks that you got the twist spoiled for you, because the gameplay is absolutely not the reason people stick with the game. Even if the identity of the killer is (IMO) a bad twist, the mystery surrounding who the killer is is fairly compelling. Knowing it ahead of time just removes any reason to play it.

    I don't dislike Heavy Rain, but it definitely would benefit from a remake.
    To me, Madison's storyline should have been cut completely. In a tighter-written story, it would be evident that her contributions didn’t do anything that Norman, Ethan, and Lauren didn’t accomplish. I would make Lauren a playable character over Madison and if you wanted to go the love interest route, have Grace and Ethan rekindle their relationship. Madison, at best, should be relegated to a pushy journalist NPC role or the Origami Killer since that type of killing is usually profiled to be a man.
    Norman being the Origami Killer would have worked as well. He could have Scott's backstory and the murders start in part due to the ARI+triptocane fueled benders. He reasonably would make more than Scott so it would make more sense because he would in theory have more access to resources. The shark trials could be a way of getting rid of people on the FBI list as well.

    This is a game that you must play for yourself, to really understand its hook. I may be wrong, but I don’t believe the reviewer actually sat and played this game. He talks about it not really being a game throughout the video, because of the lack of skill needed to click button prompts during “quick time events” (QTE). What he doesn’t mention is how frantic those QTEs can get. For example, your character is seemingly placed in a life or death situation, and you have button prompts flying at you, rapidly flashing, changing and shaking all over the screen, while NPC are screaming orders at you. What do you do? In this one instance, you can choose any of the many impulsive QTE prompts, or you can do what you feel is right. And since, I believed in a peaceful outcome, I chose to do nothing. It turns out that doing nothing was the correct move for my game. The game forces you to believe in your character as a real life person, and project those same feelings on the NPCs. Simply, it draws you into its world. The story has its issues, but what story doesn’t? I played this game back in 2009, and still tell people how great it is today.

    David Cage had been there before Telltale, Supermassive, and Dontnod/Deck Nine. Combined with good graphic for its day and then innovative branching narrative choices, no wonder he was praised so highly.
    Unfortunately, his formula hasn't changed much, Detroit is not that much different from Indigo, while devs like Super Giant or Sam Barlow are doing so much more. He's also not that good a film director or script writer, so the cinematographic parts are not really film level. AND he's French. So naturally, indie critics nowadays are not looking at him with goggle eyes.
    Heavy Rain is indeed a solid foundation, but nothing more.

    SPOILERS in the last of us joels daughter dies way to soon the in the beginning with only having like 10 mins of screen time it would have been more impact full if we spent more time with her

    It may not be the popular opinion, but even without the option to die or mess up something, I still think Beyong two souls is their best game. Except there is a piece of shit that treats you like a damn toy and they are really hardcore trying to force you to like and romance him at the end, but hey, you can avoid that piece of shit for good.

    honestly I consider this game to be so bad that it becomes good. To me it's The Room of video games, the plot points are so nonsensical at times that I cannot take any part of it seriously. What adds to it is the polish translation of the game which makes it even funnier. For example, instead of pronouncing "origami" wrong, all characters in the polish version refer to the killer as the "zabójca z origami" which translates to "the killer made of origami" which makes all the dialogue about him sound so silly.

    I’ll be honest - I couldn’t finish the game just due to the control scheme being horirble and thus action scenes being janky, and with permanent consequences to those it’s far too annoying for me.
    I just looked up the story and now that I know who the killer is, I laugh because I’ve only played a couple chapters with him and honestly it’s such a stretch in the story it’s laughable.

    Even if you did start at the mall instead of Ethan's house, I don't think it would improve on the liking of the main characters that much. Especially Jason, who is portrayed as a dumb kid with possible special needs that unfortunately gets hated on by viewers of the many LP's and streams of this game I've seen. He ignores his dad's warning about straying away from him and the consistent calling of his name which has now become quite a meme due to the strange delivery that Ethan's VA makes. Then there's the death scene. It's dumb. Ethan clearly takes the hit and yet Jason dies anyway. So what impression would this make if the mall scene was the main start of the game? That Ethan is a not a great father and Jason should still be on one of those reins for children. As for the rest of the game, the plot is a mess with things that don't make sense, a terrible romance plot that comes out of nowhere with awkward kissing and moaning noises, a few characters that act as side villains that you can easily avoid and don't much to the story and the ending can be fun until you mis-click or fail to do something earlier in the game that leads to certain death (especially by the armed police outside which come across as complete gun-ho idiots who rather shoot first and answer questions later). Despite that though, this game is easily up there as The Room of videogames (though, of course, not quite as comedically bad) lol

    I can see why people like thia game but as someone that jist finished this game last night it's nothing remarkable in my eyes. The controls and quicktime events are irritating and annoying. The story feels jumpy and the ending feels odd and out of nowhere. Overall an interesting experience but it's definitely far from a good/enjoyable experience

    Quantic Dream's games just aren't for me and that's coming from someone who fits into your end quote. I'm someone who studied art for years and I've been playing video games for as long as I can remember and for me, none of Quantics games meet a good balance of game meets art. My problem is David Cage's philosophy towards his games is much better suited to film or TV as the gameplay for his games greatly suffers because he wants to tell a story but doesn't want to "conform" to traditional gameplay ideas. There are aspects to enjoy about Heavy Rain and some intrigue around the killer but when you're doing mindless objectives like in the introduction all I can ask is... why am I doing this? It just doesn't add anything. You do really highlight a lot of my personal feelings towards Heavy Rain though, but this is Quantics "best" work so I wouldn't be in a rush to seek out the other games except maybe Fahrenheit. Great video mate and as always cannot wait for more!

    • @CloudConnection
      @CloudConnection  4 роки тому

      Yeah, I know what you mean about the Quantic Dream philosophy; it's different for sure, but that doesn't mean the games they make are instantly good. And I think they bank too heavily on that QD formula without realizing its shortcomings.

    It was a bang up great story. Can’t really make child abduction NOT intriguing and popcorn munchin good. But I’m sorry. The matrix glasses made the entire game feel like a Japanese Anime. Lame! The character who wore em sucked too!
    I’d rather have the dad become a detective over a year or two and after rising through the ranks, he finally catches a break and finds a big lead to finding his son once and for all. Not some random stuck up Hotch rip off(Criminal Minds) with anime matrix glasses with the worst movement controls of the game. The virtual desk crap was so bad!
